While the crew of the Calypso did a bit of diving in this installment of "The Cousteau Odyssey", most of the episode concerns the land itself....and many unanswered questions. Apparently, the population of the island was quite large...but then something happened. The population crashed, the island was nearly denuded and folks even resorted to cannibalism! Why? What happened to this tropical land?
In addition to this mystery, the show discusses petroglyphs on the island, ecology as well as shows how Philippe Cousteau was nearly killed when his helicopter engine seized. Interestingly, although banged up and hospitalized, he recovered...only to die about a year later when he crashed his seaplane.
Overall, an interesting discussion of the history of the island...an island mostly bare today.
