Very good middle episode.

Pirie is now looking for a present day killer after Ziggy's death, as well as trying to put the pieces together of Rosie's demise, she uses some underhanded means to track down Rosie's daughter.

I really did look forward to this after really enjoying the first episode, armed with high expectations, I was hoping for something really good, it was.

The sound was better than last week, but still a few instances where I was squinting to catch the dialogue.

The case is an interesting one, it's also intriguing to see Pirie battling against up to date challenges, such as the podcaster.

One gripe, we've had two people stand in the middle of nowhere and just scream, does that actually happen in the real world?

Lauren Lyle continues to impress as Pirie, her character is likeable, she's feisty, intelligent, and she's keen to get to the truth. I only wish she'd ditch the bumbag.

I can't help wondering if Emer Kenny's character is going to play a slightly bigger role, perhaps that person she's supposedly chatting to, considering she wrote it, she's playing a relatively small part.

Once again I'm keen to see next week's episode, 8/10.

Weird...

Warning: Spoilers
I have to say growing up I knew a number of "Weirds". Not one of them ever became a college professor! They became homeless, career criminals, or died from their own actions.

But TV is not life!

I truly am enjoying this short run series! Just about to watch ep 3 and cannot wait to see who is behind the current day killings of suspects and what really happened back in 1996.

Seems from the end of ep 2, Rosie's adopted daughter who found out about her mom may be involved in the suspects demise. Weird seems to have done himself in but I imagine he survives...

To be honest, I started watching because I saw Lauren Lyle in a film called "Mercy Falls" and liked her performance enough to check out what else she had done!

Episode 2

Warning: Spoilers
With Ziggy dead there might be one less suspect. There is pressure on podcaster Bel Richmond.

Ziggy might have been killed by vigilante justice. This could be family members of Rosie Duff.

At least this make DS Karen Pirie cold case investigation more intriguing. She finds herself teamed up with estranged DS Phil Parhatka.

Flashbacks show that the young students did not have it easy as potential suspects. Tom 'Weird' Mackie suffered at university as he was cold shouldered by female students.

In the present, DS Pirie made important discoveries. Evidence that was misfiled and Rosie's daughter who was placed in adoption.

The latter as risk DS Pirie makes that inflames her superiors.

The bloat more noticeable in this episode, some uneven pacing. More notably the abrasive relationship between Pirie and Parhatka.

A long stretch

I watch a lot of drama - especially detective shows - so it is strange to see a story spread over 3 x 2 hour episodes (OK, under 90 mins without ads and trailers).

You really have to go back to the days of Prime Suspect, Cracker and Inspector WexFord to see 2 or 3 parters so this will take the viewer getting some used to.

For me, the question is why has it been done like this?

The Roy Grace books are of similar length to The Distant Echo and managed to be concised into one episode when dramatised.

I feel this is too stretched out with the screenplay writer even finding herself a role in the show that wasn't in the book but, there again, Karen Pirie hardly appears either but but she has been given a central role with strong characterisations.

The story is strained and eked out despite one major character from the book not appearing (as well as others).

Mondo, Ziggy, Gilly and Weird are plausible nick names. Who on earth invented Ticker, Mint and River Wilde lacked the same imagination.

One episode or two at the most would have been quite sufficient.
