The first Tokyo Sukiyaki Theaters, a hybrid film festival designed to screen films in an online theater for the world and in-person in a Japanese movie theater, is now open for submissions on FilmFreeway.
Tokyo Sukiyaki Theaters is a joint project between Cinemago, a Japanese independent film distributor, and todoiF, which streams independent films to an international audience. Leveraging the strengths of both companies, this hybrid film festival is a one of a kind celebration of the fair and equal value of independent films made in countries around the world as a special place where films can be presented simultaneously to a global audience in both online and offline environments.

Although far from the first horror anthology, Creepshow quickly established itself as the quintessential one. After several stalled attempts to work together, George A. Romero and Stephen King — two undisputed masters in their respective fields, each in their prime — finally collaborated in 1982. With both creators having grown up on EC horror comics of the 1950s like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear, it made sense that an homage to those works would bring the two titans of terror together.
Creepshow packs five tales (three originals and two adapted from existing King short stories) plus a wraparound that bookends the film in two hours flat. The Halloween-set framing story finds a disparaging father lambasting his son for reading horror comics before throwing away the latest issue of Creepshow. Beckoned by the silent host known as The Creep, the tales within the discarded comic serve as the anthology’s segments.

Blu-ray distributor Plaion, previously known in Germany as Koch Media, has been responsible for some Special Editions which were absolute jawdroppers. Their release of Richard Stanley's The Color Out of Space was a highpoint for me in 2020, and last year's super special edition of David Lynch' 1984 take on Dune similarly trumped everything else for me. Unrelated, I'm known as a nutcase with regards to Mamoru Oshii's 1995 anime Ghost in the Shell, copies of which are scattered through my house in five different types of media. I listed them here a long time ago but that article is already hugely outdated. So guess what the Plaion people decided to release as their next super special editions? Oh brother... it was Ghost in the...

Offering rides to strangers can often lead to trouble, and in Sympathy for the Devil, one driver is about to discover that not every passenger is worth picking up. Production is underway in Las Vegas on Sympathy for the Devil, starring Academy Award-winner Nicolas Cage and Joel Kinnaman.
Yuval Adler directs from a script written by Luke Paradise (Lost on a Mountain in Maine). Sympathy for the Devil follows “The Driver” (Kinnaman), who finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse after being forced to drive a mysterious man, “The Passenger” (Cage). As their white-knuckle ride progresses, it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.
“This is a tour de force featuring two incredible actors,” said producer Allan Ungar. “As an acclaimed filmmaker, Yuval has assembled the perfect cast and brought a unique and gritty vision to this film that will be sure to capture audiences.

Childhood friends Charlotte (Chelsea Edge), Heather (Sophie Vavasseur), and Deidre (Lucy Martin) never get to hang out anymore. Adulthood has a tendency of keeping once-inseparable cliques apart, but they’re hoping a once-in-a-lifetime meteor shower is just the excuse to finally get them together again. What better reason is there for Heather to use her father’s isolated modern mansion in the middle of nowhere? She can cajole Charlotte’s analog and low-maintenance “nerd” away from her 9-to-5 grind, as well as Deidre’s ultra-popular social-media influencer from her hectically vapid life by promising peace and quiet to the former and scenic livestream views to the latter. Maybe they’ll even have fun breaking from their usual routines to remember who they were all those years ago.
It’s a solid entry point into writer-director Sam Walker’s feature debut The Seed because it sets up conflict rooted in their pasts.

Update: Director Richard Stanley (Color Out of Space) who was the subject of allegations of abuse by an ex-partner, has filed criminal complaints in France in response.
“My attorney has filed criminal complaints of Libel and Harassment on my behalf, in France, against Tracy Robertson, aka ‘Scarlett Amaris’, a screenwriter and fantasist who launched a vicious attack on my career and reputation on March 16, 2021,” Stanley said.
Stanley called the accusations “lies and damnable lies, and I have the witnesses and evidence to fully discredit Tracy’s story as a dark fairytale that bears no relationship to the truth.”
He added that he was confident in the outcome of his legal proceeding, and said his reputation would be vindicated by the evidence he would present.
“In the meantime,” he concluded, “I wish to thank all those who have stood by me through this difficult period.”

As critics and audiences alike have learned over four decades and counting, Nicolas Cage contains multitudes. Not in a literal sense, of course, but in a figurative one, through committed (emphasis on “committed”) performances that began in the early 1980s, an Academy Award for Best Actor (Leaving Las Vegas), a career slide starring in disposable genre entries, and now, apparently far from the twilight of his career, a welcome resurgence. Just don’t call it a “Cageassance”. Every once in a while, Cage finds the perfect material for his acting talents, including his most recent effort, Pig, a surprisingly introspective, poignant character study welded into the sturdy trappings of a slow-burning, unpredictable...

Portugal’s cash rebate scheme, introduced in 2018, is attracting major international productions and new production outfits and facilities, and providing significant leverage for domestic film and TV productions.
Shoots slowed during the pandemic, with several projects lensed in bubbles, but production is expected to surge in the second half of 2021.
The current cash rebate is tabbed at 25/30% of eligible production spend and may be upwardly revised in the near future.
€22.5 million ($27.5 million) in total cash rebate has been disbursed since 2018, roughly equally split between international shoots and 100% Portuguese productions and co-productions.
High-profile projects include Ira Sachs’ “Frankie,” with Isabelle Huppert, Richard Stanley’s “The Color Out of Space,” starring Nicolas Cage, Marco Pontecorvo’s “Fatima,” with Harvey Keitel, and three Bollywood pics. These projects have accessed cash rebate per pic varying between €631,000 and €1.9 million ($2.4 million) Portugal is also shaking up its production eco-system. Funded by Turismo de Portugal, the country’s shoot cash rebate aims to increase Portugal’s international visibility. Secretary of State for Tourism Rita Marques stresses that tourism is a key driver of sustainable growth, job creation and foreign investment, as well as promoting Portuguese and European cultural values: “That’s why we have created one of the most competitive film production incentive systems in Europe, especially oriented to those projects that can bring economic social, and environment value and positive impact to the world.”
Portugal boasts the highest number of sunny days in Europe and greener landscapes than much of Southern Europe. Crews are skilled, multi-lingual and offer highly competitive rates.
The major diversity of natural and cultural heritage within a relatively small country means that shoots can access a wide variety of locales within relatively short distances.

Stephen King is a name you associate far more with writing than acting, but in spite of this, he’s racked up over two dozen credits in front of the camera, mostly cameos in adaptations of his own work. Despite the horror themes of many of these appearances, though, he’s only been seen to die once, in George A. Romero’s 1982 anthology Creepshow.
King appears in The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, one of the film’s stronger segments, which sees the eponymous dim-witted farmer discover a meteorite on his land and envisions selling it to pay off his bank loan. However, a series of mishaps and Jordy’s own gormlessness result in the alien plant life within the rock escaping and enveloping both the farm and Jordy himself, whereupon, in a departure from the humor of the rest of the tale, he blows his head off with a...

Every once in a while, someone likes to declare that the horror genre is dead, and so far, every one of those predictions has been wrong.
Horror movies have been around almost as long as filmmaking itself, and while the genre has always been cyclical in nature –dipping, sometimes drastically, in both quality and quantity from time to time — all it usually takes is a well-timed box office hit, a fresh new angle or a hot young filmmaker to reanimate it again.
The 21st century has been, overall, an extremely healthy one for horror. There’s been the usual amount of dross, of course, but the genre has branched out in a number of interesting new directions as well. We had absolutely no problem tallying the initial batch of movies for this article, and have just continued to update it ever since, starting with the newest and going back in time from there.

HBO’s long-awaited drama series “Lovecraft Country” finally hits the network this August, and a first trailer for the series has been unveiled by the network today. Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, “Lovecraft Country” looks to offer plenty of southern gothic thrills and chills of the kind originated by the eponymous author of such stories as “The Call of Cthulhu” and “The Colour Out of Space.” The original dark fantasy novel explored the connection between the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, and racism in the United States circa the Jim Crow era. Here’s the official synopsis from HBO:
“The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This...

Director Richard Stanley brings his long-awaited Color Out of Space to the screen at last.
Color Out of Space adapts what legendary horror author H.P. Lovecraft considered his personal favorite short story, “The Colour Out of Space.” Although the film is set in the present, it is faithful to the original 1927 narrative, in which a family is both driven to madness and altered physically by the presence of an alien entity that has landed on their farm in a meteorite.
The new film stars Nicolas Cage as the head of the doomed Gardner family, while the director and writer is Richard Stanley, the South African-born filmmaker whose feature career got off to an acclaimed start in 1990 with the cyberhorror thriller Hardware. Stanley followed that with the troubled but still visionary Dust Devil in 1992, and then landed his first Hollywood assignment in 1996 with a third film version of...

South African filmmaker Richard Stanley is currently enjoying a years-later career revival thanks to The Color Out of Space, a new film hitting theaters Friday and based on H.P. Lovecraft’s classic short story. Stanley’s adaptation stars Nicolas Cage as an eccentric, alpaca-raising patriarch whose family’s members all lose their minds after they’re exposed to an alien meteorite.
Both Stanley’s Color and ongoing comeback would not have been possible without the success of Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau, writer-director David Gregory’s detailed and unsparing 2014 documentary about the catastrophic ...

It's billed as a sequel to Cloverfield, but is 10 Cloverfield Lane all it seems? We take a look at the subject of unrelated sequels...
In an era where it's just about impossible to make a high-profile movie without at least something leaking onto the web, producer Jj Abrams seems to have pulled off the ultimate coup in recent months: he and his company Bad Robot have secretly created a follow-up, of sorts, to the 2008 hit monster movie, Cloverfield.
On the 15th January, a trailer landed for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror thriller that Abrams described in a statement to Collider as a "blood relative" of that earlier film directed by Matt Reeves.
The premise is this: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, is injured in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker with 40-something survivalist, Howard (John Goodman).

SpectreVision, an indie horror production company, has confirmed that it will produce a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's famed short story "The Color Out of Space".
Set in the wild hills west of Arkham in Massachusetts, the story follows a narrator who pieces together the story of a 'blasted heath', an area where many years ago a meteorite crashed.
As a result, the life force of anything living nearby is drained. Yet at the same time flora grows huge and strange, whilst animals are deformed and humans either go insane or die.
Richard Stanley ("Hardware," "Dust Devil") will direct, the filmmaker's first feature in over two decades. He will direct and pen the screenplay which aims to be scary. In a statement, SpectreVision cofounder Daniel Noah says:

Mike Davis is the publisher and editor of the online magazine, Lovecraft eZine. In a short time, Lovecraft eZine has become so popular that it caught the attention and approval of S.T. Writer/Director: Huan Vu. Cast: Ingo Heise, Michael Kausch, Marco Leibnitz, Erik Rastetter, Marah Schneider. Not many of H.P. Lovecraft's works are easily translatable to screen. Try as some might with a huge budget, others have gone low with varying degrees of success. The German Die Farbe (The Colour out of Space) fits right in as one of the better calibre products. Its DVD/Blu-ray release is terrific, since it comes with a small selection of extras, from the making of to the explanation of science in horror fiction. And the multi-subtitle track is perfect to tell viewers what the story is about. Readers familiar with Lovecraft's tale will find a respectful retooling of his work. The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.
The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.
Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

The busiest month of the year for horror fans started with multiple events to choose from, including the Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival in beautiful Big Bear Lake, California. The mountain location, with its vast forested areas, is perfect for telling campfire tales or watching horror movies. The festival itself took place in the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center with nighttime activities held on a ship, at a local nightclub, and in a restaurant, all great locations to have fun and be spooked.
The festival hosted workshops by some of the horror business’ greatest such as writer, magazine publisher, director, and producer Kerry O’Quinn; composer Harry Manfredini; and Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller. Feature films (classic and new), shorts, and medium-length films were all shown as part of the festival’s film competition and special screenings. Once the workshops and screenings stopped at night, pass-holders were treated...
