Man, this brings back some cool memories
cescfabregas-509969 January 2023
I read the books a bit under 20-years ago. The producers, the writers, the directors, the financiers and all the folks connected to Anne Rice must have come up with lots and lots of variations of how to start the show. Episode 1 is more than good enough. The first episode's triggered all these suppressed and long ago forgotten memories about the rich tapestry of the novels I've read regarding the Mayfair witches and Lestat. The first episode hasn't made anything obvious, or spelt anything out other than if you've read the books you're on the same page. All the best for the yet uninitiated or non-Anne Rice book consumers....

Solid Beginning

The world of Ann Rice is back !!! I absolutely loved Interview with the vampire, so I am coming into this with high expectations !

It's definitely an episode to set up the season which is why it doesn't get higher than a 7, that doesn't mean it's bad in any way, these types of episodes just tend to be slower, not my cup of tea format style

BUT, the story we have of Rowen being adopted and now that she's older and struggling with this "power" she believes she has, it's really interesting and the whole backstory is good especially towards the end when some light is being shed on the truth.

There is quite a lot of time jumps in this but nothing drastic that you would get confused, I really did enjoy this and it has me excited for the rest of the season !!

Clunky acting, trope-y writing, bad directing
generic230-111 January 2023
This show is a disappointment. It's like a Lifetime show. Everything is unoriginal & un-nuanced. The men are 99% creepy jerks. It's so weird how there isn't ONE NORMAL GUY. They all talk in that slimy, creepy uncle way. The female characters are not the greatest either. There's no complexity to any of this series. It hit sthe nail on the head with broad characters and weak plot and tropes out the wazoo.

It's sad. I don't know how talented people can go so wrong. But it happens and now that we have great shows like Outlander and A Discovery of Witches, The Mayfair Witches just doesn't rise to that level.

The Protagonist Talks As If English Is Her Second Language

Well Shot Well Acted Except For The Lead Her Scenes Pull You Out Of The Scene Her Twitching And Grabbing Herself Constantly Have You Fearing She Is Overdosed On Drugs.

As For The Rest Of The Cast The Aunt And Uncle Are Good The Mother Is Excellently Played Both Of Them The Mystery Is Compelling The Atmosphere Is Absorbing I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE THIS SHOW Unfortunately The Lead Is So Annoyingly Distracted That I Find Myself Checking My Phone And Scrolling Through Tiktok When Ever She Is On Screen While Her Beauty Did Get Me To Watch The Show. HER ACTING Had Me Wishing That The Show Was Over Already.

I love this!

I read the books a long time ago, and I was very excited to see how this turned out. The first episode did not disappoint. I can't wait for the next one. I think it was also excellently cast! Alexandra Daddario Is perfect and really leaves you wanting more. Her performance is stellar and the mystery of the Mayfair witches is fully captured. I will definitely be tuning in for the rest of the season. I like the costume design as well for the different eras they depict. The cast really does a great job depicting the characters of the Mayfair family. They did a great job selecting who would play each character.

I'm glad Anne Rice doesn't have to see this.

Warning: Spoilers
I hardly EVER write reviews. But since Anne Rice can't speak for herself... I thought I would do it this time. I appreciate that TV/movies don't always match... Even that it's not always possible. BUT.. let's at least be recognizable. This "adaptation" should have been labeled "Loosely based upon and including some characters by" rather than using the actual title. They have butchered major elements that skew the whole storyline beyond recognition. AND... They didn't even do a decent job at the story they attempted. Special effects are very poor. Acting, (except for Daddario, who does try) is very surface with little depth. Plot is changed so much it loses cohesion. I knew they had made changes, but I thought that I would at least, give it a try. That was a mistake. It was excruciating.

They've Removed Key Characters
mitchellatkins-753431 February 2023
One of my favorite book trilogies. They decided to butcher the story and remove 2 of the 3 main characters. Movie/TV adaptations never follow exactly, but removing 3/4's of the story is ridiculous. I like the casting of the real characters from the book. But the show is slooooow, and Im guessing they're going to destroy this universe and tie in the interview with a vampire show. Anne Rice is rolling in her grave over this I'd bet. Its too bad AMC got ahold of her books. Hopefully they remake this into a movie trilogy once AMC loses the rights or sells them off from lack of an audience. Reminds me of how they killed the Hobbit in the movie adaptions.
