Diana Rigg steals the show!
mikemikeparker3 January 2021
It has aged pretty well. The first half is too slow, but the second half is a master-class of brooding menace, dominated by Diana Riggs's performance as the unhinged, vicious and obsessive matriarch. Gripping plot and great ending. Recommended.

The calm before the Storm

Perhaps the least exciting episode of the four, but still great, this penultimate episode seems to be gearing up for an explosive finale, prepping the final outing. It is still of the highest quality, one thing you notice is how quickly passages of time are flying by.

Angie has grown incredibly irritated by the deception, years of hiding the truth from Helena, the result of which will obviously appear in the conclusion. With Alex's new wife, and the kids talking, it's a guessing game of who's going to slip, and tell her everything.

James Grout is excellent in this one, a slightly more subdued performance from Rigg has allowed others to shine in this one. You just know she's saving up for the finale. David McCallum and Fiona Gillies both particularly good.

I didn't really care for the cops, slightly too frivolous and perhaps a little stupid in their questioning, Jonathan Burn and Trevor Cooper playing their parts as if they were starring in a high brow sitcom.

Episode 3

Warning: Spoilers
Poor George Batt he is getting the blame for the death of Ruth Vesey. He is just too nice and dim to realise that Helena has set him up.

It really is a case of whether George can survive prison. He pays a high price for betraying Helena. He is sentenced to life.

Whereas Sir Alex finds himself not grieving for long. On a trip to Rome he comes across a famed American film star. Live blossoms for him.

Helena is displeased, maybe she thought that he will go back to her.

The penultimate episode sets up the ultimate betrayal for Helena. That her beloved son has been seeing his father for all these years.

It is astonishing to see how fast moving the series has been. The two detectives also added much needed dry humour as they even speculate if Helena could had set up Ruth's murder.
