Now than Shin Godzilla has lumbered its way into American theaters, leaving a trail of devastation and bureaucracy jokes in its wake, it’s time for Universal to start getting serious about its upcoming sequel to Gareth Edward’s 2014 Godzilla movie. Finding a writer for a movie is generally a good place to start, and Variety reports that Universal has turned to two proven monster-mayhem specialists for the task. That would be Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields, who collaborated on the script for Krampus for Universal. (Dougherty also directed that film, as well as the cult-classic-in-the-making Trick ‘r Treat.)
Dougherty has experience with big-budget projects like this one, having written the screenplays for X-Men 2 and Superman Returns. (He also received a story credit on X-Men Apocalypse.) Shields, on the other hand, has worked mostly in horror, save for a stint writing for Dollhouse. But they’ll probably have ...

Not to be confused with Asif Kapadia’s acclaimed documentary about the late singer that released earlier this year, Screen Daily has revealed that a second Amy Winehouse biopic has entered pre-production. Irish filmmaker Kirsten Sheridan (Dollhouse, August Rush) will write and direct the biographical feature, which has its crosshairs placed on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo starlet Noomi Rapace to assume the title role.
Understood to be in the very early stages, source close to the project claim that Rapace is “in talks” to star as the record-breaking songstress, who tragically passed away from alcohol poisoning in July 2011. She was 27. No word yet on an official title for the new drama, though we imagine it won’t stray too far from the instantly recognizable – and therefore easily marketable – name of the late soul singer.

The transition for many teens from acting out in their adolescent ways to maturing into a responsible adult is the emotional motivation and conflict in the new drama, What Richard Did. Based on the award-winning book Bad Day in Blackrock by Kevin Powers, the Lenny Abrahamson-helmed film adaptation is a devastating study of how teenagers confront who they think they were and who they ultimately prove to be. Shot entirely on location in Ireland, the coming-of-age film, led by Transformers 4 star Jack Reynor in the title role, is a detailed portrait of the consequences teenagers must learn to take responsibility for.
What Richard Did follows the privileged title teen character, Richard Karsen, as he lives in a world where everything seems possible. The rich Dublin rugby star’s pre-college summer, which is filled with access to his family’s beach house and cars, changes when he sets his...

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the new Shia Labeouf! Ok, not exactly, but Michael Bay has confirmed on his blog that young actor Jack Reynor has been cast to act opposite Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming Transformers 4. .He is an Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket,. Bay blogs about his new hire. .Pretty ballsy. Seriously who does that? Anyway I spotted him in a great little Irish movie What Richard Did. This kid is the real deal.. Richard isn.t the only credit on Reynor.s resume. He also has starred in Kirsten Sheridan.s Dollhouse and Eoin Macken.s Cold, which is in post-production. He has a part in Vince Vaughn.s The Delivery Man, which currently is filming in New York City. And he.ll move from there to the fourth Transformers, which Bay should begin filming later this year. As for the sequel,...

What makes some film soundtracks transcend from mere background music to helping a director tell a story and help invoke an emotional response? Is it a clever mix of well chosen tunes that capture the zeitgeist or an eclectic mix of older material that either captures a time and place or sets a tone of nostalgia? The answer varies depending on the feature film. 2012 was a fantastic year for original motion picture movie scores but not so good for soundtracks. Still, Simon and I have managed to pull a list of what we feel were the very best.

I don’t’ share the popular opinion that 2012 has been a terrible year in film. It hasn’t been as strong as previous years but 2012 gave us such gems as Holy Motors, The Master, Berberian Sound Studio, Tabu, Skyfall and Moonrise Kingdom, to name a few. As with every year, I thought it appropriate to highlight some of the year’s most memorable individual moments, scenes, and sequences, from movies that may or may not have made our individual year-end lists. Which is no small feat considering just how insane the release calendar has become.
We are keeping out credit sequences since we feel it is an art form in itself.
Honourable Mentions:
The Deep Blue Sea – The underground flashback.
Oslo, August 31st – The cafe scene.
Miss Bala – The extended take during the shoot out .
Universal Solider 4 – The opening shotgun sequence.
Universal Solider 4 – The fight in the sport retail store.

Continuing its festival run this week at SXSW, following its Berlin premiere, is a remarkable Irish film, "Dollhouse," directed by Kirsten Sheridan. The trippy, pulsing story of a home invasion scenario that is by turns scary, funny and surreal (you can read our review here), the film gained a special mention in Berlin, which is also where we caught up with its director.
Sheridan was previously nominated for an original screenplay Oscar (for co-writing her father Jim Sheridan's "In America"), and gained a lot of positive notice for her debut feature, the Cillian Murphy breakout "Disco Pigs." Following that was a perhaps ill-advised foray into Hollywood for the schmaltzy "August Rush" (about which she speaks candidly below). With "Dollhouse" only her third feature, and a startling departure from both of her previous outings, we sincerely hope the Dublin-based filmmaker won't leave it so long till her next. As our...

As we all are with films set in cities we know well, this writer is particularly critical of films set, partially or wholly, in Dublin. So it's no mean praise when we state that Kirsten Sheridan's third feature, "Dollhouse," by turns riotous and menacing, is as accurate a portrait of the interactions, language and attitudes of a particular segment of Irish youth as we have seen on screen, probably ever. Set in a single location over the course of a single night's bacchanalian partying, the improvisational approach brings real authenticity to the proceedings, even as the film nods to "Lord of the Flies" and "A Clockwork Orange." Twists and surprises abound right up to the (somewhat problematic) ending, but the throughlines are clear: this is a film about youth, the tension between feeling disaffected and disenfranchised and feeling exuberantly, indestructibly alive; and it is a film about class, the warring instincts of admiration,...

Talk to Kirsten Sheridan, director of August Rush and her latest Dollhouse (pictured and premiering in the Panorama section of the 2012 Berlinale) about The Factory, the collective she co-founded with fellow filmmakers John Carney (Once) and Lance Daly (Kisses), and it soon becomes apparent that Ireland’s recent financial woes have done little to dampen Dublin’s Diy spirit. If anything the collapse has, ironically, helped artists, Sheridan theorizes, by making their outsized dreams affordable. Indeed, in a thriving economy just meeting the rent on a space big enough to house everything from production studios, to a fully equipped camera department and editing facilities, to a digital cinema and a recording studio, would leave no time for these Factory friends to actually collectively create.
Which is exactly what they’ve been doing in this one-stop, mom-and-pop shop since 2009. And now that Carney’s The Rafters is also due to be released,...

Following up the initial announcement of titles, the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival revealed it will open with the period drama Les Adieux à la reine (Farewell My Queen) today. Based on, Chantal Thomas’ novel we have the first stills of the film (from Lumiere via The Playlist) that follows the “first few days of the French Revolution from the perspective of the servants at Versailles.”
