Oscar telecast co-producer Steven Soderbergh was intentionally vague about whether nominees, presenters and guests will be wearing masks at this year’s ceremony, and that’s just one ingredient of the secret sauce that the producers are hoping will make this year’s awards show unique and unlike any awards show we’ve seen, during a pandemic or otherwise.
In a Saturday press conference, Soderbergh joined producing partners Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins to discuss how this year’s Oscars will “announce itself as being different” right from the start — both from other Zoom-heavy awards shows during the pandemic and from traditional Oscar ceremonies.
And without giving away too many details, they clarified that the show will use “satellite hookups” in place of Zoom calls, and that by the end of the show, people “will be talking about how they made this happen.”

France’s Prime Minister Jean Castex on Wednesday said that the state has earmarked €2 billion ($2.36 billion) for the cultural sector in the wake of the coronavirus. While the full economic recovery plan — €100B euros in total — will not be officially unveiled until September 3, the newly installed Castex told France Inter radio that the state believes “culture is an economic activity” and that “the cultural sector has greatly suffered from the crisis… more than others.”
The state’s priority, according to Castex, is that business gets back on track. He added, “I say to the French: Go to the cinema, go to the theater, you risk nothing.” The timing is notable given today sees the release of Christopher Nolan’s anticipated Tenet throughout the country. The Warner Bros title is the first major new Hollywood movie here and is hoped to provide a significant boost for the market which last weekend...

Everybody wears a mask to the world. We create an image that we want people to see and create a character that becomes our public face. Actors have, or at least hope they have the ability to change that mask to create a character for a film or a play and to make the watcher believe they are that different person, that they are going through some emotion that even if it’s alien to them in real life, it’s real to the character they play.
This is what Masks is about. The mask we wear and the masks that have to be created, and what does it take to fully lose the masks that are worn?

Highlights included the following:
• Wyh: How did the three of you get together to start the movie? When did the idea of “German Angst” come about?
Am: “It was my idea when I was touring with my last film “Masks”. I was asked what Jörg Buttgereit is doing, because there were a lot of these anthology movies, like “The Theater Bizarre”, around at this time and no German movies of this kind, and so people were asking. And I’ve known Jörg a very long time, since the 80’s, 1983, when I did the poster art work for “Nekromantik”…Then I asked...

No, German Angst is not a Uwe Boll biopic, although that would seem pretty damned appropriate. What we have here, kids, is a new anthology film featuring the works of Jorg Buttgereit (Nekromantik, Der Todesking), Andreas Marchall (Tears of Kali, Masks), and Michael Kosakowoski (Zero Killed).
In 1920 Germany became the most influential production location for fantastic films. Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s Nosferatu, Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and The Hands of Orlac, Paul Wegener’s The Golem earned the German cinema the label The Demonic Screen (Lotte H. Eisner). German filmmakers told stories of the underworld beneath urban life, about the invasion of the subconscious. The frontiers between reality and dreams blurred and the fear of dark eros emerged. These masterpieces of German Expressionist cinema are the ancestors of the contemporary fantastic genre. Their influence is still felt in almost every modern film. With the Nazi dictatorship...

So, how do you up the ante in the current anthology horror movement? Getting Jörg Buttgereit, the director of the infamous Nekromantic to contribute is a hell of a start. But from the looks of this very Nsfw trailer for German Angst, directors Michal Kosakowski (Zero Killed) and Andreas Marschall (Masks) are keeping up with Buttgereit's lurid imagination, if not topping it. In this trilogy of "love, sex and death in Berlin" you will see: people on leashes, German tanks, rusty tools, naked writhing bodies and... much worse. Check out the nightmarish carnival of cruelty for yourself below. ...

While horror anthologies seem to be a dime a dozen these days, it isn't that often that one is able to wrangle a cult legend like Jorg Buttegereit into returning to the genre after a 20 year absence. German Angst has done just that, but it's not a done deal just yet.The producers of the film are looking for money to get the project on the move, and they've put together quite a convincing Kickstarter proposal. Buttegereit (Nekromantik, Schramm, Der Todesking) is joined by Andreas Marschall (Masks, Tears of Kali) and Michal Kosakowski (Zero Killed), both of whom are also big figures in the German genre film scene. Frankly, looking through the conceptual material and examples of actual footage shot, this thing looks like it...

The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.
The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.
Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

The third and final day of the Fantasy Film Weekend started and although I was tired there was plenty to look forward to. The first film would be Red Sonja, which was an easy one to start off with. I knew that the highlight of the day would of course be The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm and the Masks screen talk with Andreas Marschall. It was nice to know that the end was near of course as tiredness was starting to become normality and my brain needed some serious rest.
Red Sonja
Red Sonja is a film that can no way be called good, but it has it arguably has its place in cult history. Not many films would pair up Arnold Schwarzenegger and Brigitte Nielsen in a Conan the Barbarian setting but this is obviously what they were looking for. Conan is of course superior but to...

So Andreas Marschall really likes his giallo? Masks, the director's second film, is so breathlessly earnest it could be a YouTube viral hit blown up to feature length. Virtually every scene is a hymn to lurid Italian psychodramas where a black-gloved killer steps out of the shadows to slaughter nubile young innocents by the score (and then the comic relief, natch).
