A Promising Start Hindered by Pacing and Lackluster Ending
oliviaczar8 April 2024
As a viewer who stumbled upon this film on Netflix, I approached it with moderate expectations. The initial half-hour sets a promising tone with its fast-paced and engaging narrative, but unfortunately, the momentum gradually dissipates as the story progresses.

Visually, the film offers a refreshing departure from the typical Malaysian horror fare, with its higher production quality and occasional creative CGI. However, there are moments when the CGI feels overly indulgent, detracting from the overall experience.

The Netflix-like vibe, reminiscent of popular series such as Stranger Things, adds a contemporary appeal, and the characters are generally well-crafted, with understandable motives. Special mention goes to the actor who portrayed the intentionally annoying character convincingly.

Despite these strengths, the film ultimately falls short due to its lackluster ending. It left me with a sense of dissatisfaction, failing to deliver a resolution that matches the promising setup.

Interesting has potential for a sequel

The film is stylisticly shot and the vfx are not bad. Appreciate the artistic effort undertaken along with well paced music. The story keeps one curious, but not enough to fully explain the reasons why its happening. The character growth of the protaganist seems too sudden and for the entity she is facing, somehow overcomes it rather quickly. The atmosphere and intensity of the end battle were nicely done but wish it lasted longer. Overall its a good watch and hope if there is a squeal more insights and development can be given to the puppeteer (lady giving the book) and the connection to the external forces.

A copy of a copy

Somewhere, somehow if you a vivid horror fan you'll agree that, this is indeed, a copy from here and there. Malaysian horror need originality, a good backstory, lores and yes a reason for even a short jumpscare. Syamsul yusof or any yusof is also the same, producing this kind of genre. Yup, copy genre theres no originality. Indonesian's is way better off in term of this, don't get me wrong, imma Malaysian myself. Showcasing what Malaysian do or practice is also missing in our director minds. Im waiting and still believe one day a guy (or a woman) fork out one good Malaysian horror flick. Until then, Selamat Maju Jaya guys.

How did this make it into the cinemas?

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is probably one of the worst movie in terms of storytelling. Where is the story going and the origin of the story and the ending was confusing for the viewers. If it was an open ending, I can accept but the ending somehow tried too hard to give a "plot twist". This film isn't even that scary, just a lot of jumpscares w no context. Ngl this movie felt like a group project made by immatures. I think people my age could pull off w better stories. It's disappointing how in 2022 we're still releasing low quality stories. I believe there's many other good horror movie ideas from our very own authors and young scriptwriters. Lastly the fact that it lacks Islamic elements was weird. How did she just say "la hawla wala" and the demon that looked like Venom vanished. I think for this element is a very important element in horror movies at least if it's ISLAMIC HORROR. This is certainly not The Conjuring, so present something realistic. If you do not get what I mean, you should try watching Syafiq Yusof's films. He's a genius in making horror movies. In a nutshell this film Talbis Iblis was just a random mess that left viewers with so many unanswered questions.

could have been better, lack of originality
kamilahalim28 October 2022
Decided to give this movie a try, I wasn't expecting much as most malaysian horror flicks tends to disappoint most of time but this movie was actually not bad! Solid storyline, and, even though there are not many ghosts scare but it still radiates the horror ambiance.

However, it could have been better as there are many elements that I have seen before from horror movies being implemented in this movie for example like the music being played from the old music player, and few scenes replicating a recent famous horror movie.

I still would like to give this movie a 7 because of the storyline, and kudos to the actors & actresses for doing such a good job with their acting & to the whole team, of course!
