So, I've found the third generation of Skins mostly bland, but this one particular episode is one I always come back to.
Alo is at a crossroads in his life. Mini is pregnant and hasn't told him and he's fed up of her stringing him along. He meets a youthful attractive girl called Poppy and is smitten. He finds out the hard way that she is only 13 after having sex with her consensually. Meanwhile, Franky is desperately trying to push the agenda that Mini and Alo get back together.
Alo tries to sever ties with Poppy at her birthday party, causing her to become distraught. Poppy then spreads stories about Alo sexually assaulting her and he gets arrested and put onto the sex offenders register, as well as getting suspended from school. Stereotyped by the town as a paedophile, he has reached his lowest point. Poppy realizes the consequences of her actions, but her father, an aggressive Glaswegian, threatens him. Alo decides to sort himself out after his uncle(?) gives him a pep talk. Poppy tries to explain to her parents what happened to get Alo out of trouble, causing the parents to argue. Alo realizes that Poppy's family environment is toxic and hostile, which is why she acts out and attends older parties. Alo confesses to the parents what really happened and the father attacks him and throws him out of their house.
Mini makes up with Alo and is about to tell him her big news right before Poppy rings him and tells him the charges have been dropped. Mini takes this opportunity to leave, still trying to hide the news.
I empathise with Alo here because he has been shafted by everyone. Holly Earl, who plays Poppy, is incredibly youthful looking for her age. Throwing in 'age of consent' issues makes the plot a little uncomfortable but it succeeds in completely screwing up Alo's life. Interesting story, although it can certainly be seen as a tangent from the main plot.
More than anything else, this is just a retelling of the subplot in Trainspotting where Renton has sex with Diane. The only difference is that Skins goes a step further.
