Amsterdam is not just coffee shops anymore, now there are zombies there too...
paul_haakonsen16 February 2013
Anything that just remotely smells like zombie and I will watch it. And I happened to fall over "Zombibi" (or "Kill Zombie!" as it was oddly enough labeled on the DVD cover) on Amazon and had to put my decaying fingers on it. And with good reason, because "Zombibi" turned out to be quite good and loads of fun actually.

Mind you that this is a Dutch movie, but you shouldn't be discouraged by that fact. The zombies don't seem to mind, why should you? A satellite crashes in downtown Amsterdam, bringing with it some kind of unidentified green slime which turns people into raging zombies with a hunger for flesh. Aziz who has just been fired from his work end up in prison with his brother and two other criminals when havoc falls upon Amsterdam from outer space. Waking up the next morning, the entire city is turned upside down. Amidst the chaos, Aziz gets a distress call from the woman he fancies, and he have to head back to his former workplace to save her, but the road there is perilous and full of obstacles.

"Zombibi" is fast paced and has a marvelous mix of comedy and horror put together and it works out quite well. Sure, it is not "Shaun of the Dead" material, but still, it is quite good. The movie will have you laughing and cheering, and for us zombie fans, there will be some nice enough gore moments too.

The characters in "Zombibi" are so stereotypical that it just makes you laugh because it is so outrageous. And it works out well that it is done this way, bringing some self-irony to the movie. And the people they cast for the roles were doing great jobs. I have only seen one or two other Dutch movies prior to this one, so I can't claim to be familiar with anyone in the movie, so all new faces that have no prior roles attached to them was quite good.

I can warmly recommend "Zombibi" to you, especially if you like zombie movies that is spiced up with comedy. It is a good jab at the zombie genre to come out of the Netherlands.

Too silly to be effective
Leofwine_draca3 May 2015
KILL ZOMBIE!, aka ZOMBIBI, is a Dutch addition to the zombie sub-genre. The story sees a group of characters forced to battle for survival after a crashed spaceship brings an alien virus to Earth and turns much of the population into slime-spewing zombies. Will the humans manage to survive the undead onslaught? Sadly, KILL ZOMBIE! turns out to be an entirely juvenile effort, one that tries too hard to be successful.

It's an over the top comedy in which the zombie encounters are played for outright laughs and one outrageous kill scene follows another. The characters swap insults and jokes and reference the likes of SCARFACE while getting covered in green goo as they splatter the living dead.

Despite the fast pace and the level of energy involved in this production it's a rather undemanding and unappealing affair. The comic book look and feel of the movie is predictable and there's little incident that hasn't been done before and better. Some of the actors are okay but as a whole KILL ZOMBIE! is an underwhelming film.

not a Nederhorror classic but some nice CGI effects
trashgang4 September 2012
If you use a title with zombie in it than you immediately will have freaks over to attend your flick but on the other hand, there are so many zombie flicks out that you really have to look out for the better ones. The norms for zombies are very high nowadays due The Walking Dead series. Zombibi id of course a low budget flick that must be filed under zombedy.

And that's were the problem lays. I didn't had to laugh that much. There are funny bits but it's more about situations (running up stairs to be remembered to run down) then gory funny parts. Naturally they looked to other flicks and some shots are really rip-offs of other flicks. The one everybody will recognize is the Pulp Fiction rip-off in a car scene. I won't go in it, you will see it without a doubt.

The problem that I had was that not everything was understandable. The acting was mediocre and the gore for a zombie flick was low. But I do must give a big cheer to the CGI. Even as I hate it it did work when they are shooting towards zombies. Watch closely to the heads...

For the Dutch horror buffs Jan Doense (Mr Horror in the Netherlands) has a very small part in this flick. The editing was rather good with some funny effects but I did miss a big laughter while attending Zombibi. It isn't bad but it wont be a Nederhorror classic

So many good Dutch actors, but why not in this movie?
the_real_smile12 August 2012
This movie I could actually hear in my native language, but not that that was any help in liking it more.

After movies like Sl8n8 en Doodeind (Dead End) it was going the right way with the Nederhorror (Dutch Horror movies), so this movie had to top it. Sadly it fails on so many levels, first the story, the whole story can be told in 2 lines. Then the actors, the only one who did a fair job was Gigi Ravelli, but the others are just terrible. It was a miracle they could even remember their lines, it's just plain bad. Sometimes a movie can be terrific because it is so bad, but it even doesn't fall in this category. And there is no need for bad actors, there are a vast amount of good Dutch actors, why didn't they use them? They even used some bad singers as actors, it's pathetic.

Please Paul Verhoeven, start making movies like Starship Troopers again so we can be proud of our legacy again.

Not bad at all! Very funny
dmdb27 April 2016
I only write reviews of movies with low rating, which actually are not that bad. Give them a chance!

First of all, you need to understand that this movie is a comedy and even a parody in some parts. So you can't take it 100% seriously. Knowing that, you can certainly enjoy it because it is very funny. There is not a single part for which I can say is bad. You can only say that the story is not original, but since it is a zombie adventure... what can you expect? I love movies about apocalypse and that is the reason why I wanted to watch this one - I don't regret it at all.

"As you can see, nobody is safe from these zombies!"
classicsoncall7 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie aspires to be the Dutch answer to "Shaun of the Dead", but comes across more like 2019's "Shed of the Dead", although I do give it an extra rating point for the green blood. It must have been the case that The Netherlands wanted to get in on the zombie genre craze so gave it a shot here. You basically have scene after scene of gratuitous zombie smashing once the premise is established, that of a Russian space station crashing into an Amsterdam office high rise. Four principal characters are introduced from the outset, but as it turns out, only one makes it to the finale. That would be a guy named Aziz (Yahya Gaier), who loses brother Mo (Mimoun Ouled Radi) and a couple of acquaintances who come on the scene as adversaries, but find it wiser to team up in the face of a zombie apocalypse. Positioned more as a comedy rather than a horror flick, it sadly doesn't accomplish either objective, and the only redeeming feature for this thing is the casting of Dutch actress Gigi Ravelli in the role of a city policeman named Kim. Man, she's gorgeous. Take it on faith here folks, this does not make the zombie movie hall of fame. And as I think about it, you have a country called The Netherlands, which also goes by Holland, but who's language is Dutch. No wonder this is such a confusing mess.

Nice attempt, but...
Joejoesan18 May 2012
The Dutch making a zombie movie... That's like Americans making a movie about cheese. Still there's a lot to enjoy in Zombibi. First of all, with a very modest budget of about € 500.000 the picture looks great. The actors do what they can to entertain and although you cannot always understand what they're saying, you never get bored. To see Amsterdam turn into a zombie zone is also very nice for a change. Actress Gigi Ravelli, known in Holland for her role in the soap GTST, is very funny as a kick-ass cop.

Overall it's the story that lets you down. A man wants to rescue a girl and must travel across Amsterdam to do so. The finale is in a skyscraper in Amsterdam Zuidoost, the place where also an alien spaceship crashed that caused this zombie outbreak anyway. Our heroes must fight themselves into the building and save the day.

In terms of zombies we have seen it all before and the fact that this one takes place in Holland is a novelty that soon wears off. Yes, this movie goes over the top, or it least tries to. But in the end the film remains pretty safe and ends in standard mode. Makes you wonder what kind of movie somelone like Paul Verhoeven would've made out of it.

I think Zombibi was a nice attempt to make a zombie comedy and it's clear that making it was pure fun. But with more black humour and sick jokes it could have been something special.

Zombibi: Decent danish zombie piece
Platypuschow22 October 2018
This Danish zombie movie was more than a slight pain in the backside to get hold of a copy, especially one in english.

I am however I put in the effort to acquire one as this quirky little zombie comedy is actually quite a lot of fun.

More than a bit surreal it tells the story of a man who must fight his way across town to save the girl of his dreams when a zombie apocalypse breaks out. Along the way he comes across many wacky characters and moral dilemmas.

It looks great, though some of the cgi is on the rocky side the practical effects more than make up for it. The story is generic but passable, the cast are an oddball bunch who manage to deliver and the laughs are certainly well above par.

Sure it's flawed but zombies and comedy are such a perfect blend that they seem to steer most movies like this in the right direction. I laughed, I cheered our hero on and I had a ruddy good time.

Perfectly watchable attempt and certainly the best zombie movie I've seen lately.

The Good:

Gigi Ravelli

Looks great

Some real laughs to be had

The Bad:

Some ropey cgi

Structure is a tad disjointed in places

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

Zombie apocalypses look like Michael Jackson music videos

Tasering prisoners in cages is a thing

Stools are an obvious weapon choice

Great zombie movie...
KeironG26 September 2012
As recent zombie movies go this film is one of the better ones, I really enjoyed watching it, story was good, cgi was good, it was funny, OK so I'm not dutch and its usually off putting trying to watch the film and read whats going on in the subtitles BUT that aside its really worth a watch, this and another none English language film recently (Juan of the Dead) have really opened my eyes to foreign language low budget horror films. Definitely recommend watching this one if nothing else to see that stunning woman Gigi Ravelli at work... out of ten id definitely give her one... erm I mean TEN! So yeah now my mind has been distracted by thoughts of that lovely young lady ill say that its definitely worth a watch, go buy it now!

Not that bad of a zombie film
dhrgoos29 June 2012
I have to start to say that I really liked this film.

It had its typical slash and gore, its "we gotta save the girl from her hopeless position" and over the top action and comedy.

But being a Dutchy I especially enjoyed seeing the well known Dutch actors, rappers and TV celebrities.

I can think that seeing this film as a non Dutch You wont think its that special. But try to imagine this same film but with a good selection of your countries own actors, singers and TV celebrities.

For example, try to imagine this film with (f.e.)50 cents, Jennifer Anniston, Denzel Washington, David Letterman and so on.

Since this is an international movie database I gave this film a 7 out of 10, otherwise it would have been a sure 8! So, zombieflick lovers. Get your subtitles and see this great Dutch zombiefilm!

LOOKS LIKE A MICHAEL JACKSON VIDEO
nogodnomasters5 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The first 10 minutes of the film we get some character build-up, mostly for Aziz who just got fired. Then that darn Soviet space station crashes into the Camp and Bell building bringing with it a green slime zombie virus. Aziz teams up with a half dozen people to rescue a co-worker at ground zero, one who he is crushing on.

The film is more comedy than horror. It is a Dutch film with English subtitles. It has its funny moments and there are times when the humor wears off on some overdone scenes. The film is low budget and like an Asylum film, there are cars going down the highway in the background when there shouldn't be .

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Zombie kill.
DoorsofDylan1 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
With my friend being a big fan of the TV series The Walking Dead and the film Shaun of the Dead, I decided after buying Apollo 18 (2011-also reviewed) that I would get a zombie Comedy which we could watch as part of a Horror double bill on her birthday. Checking old issues of Empire magazine, I found a review by Kim Newman praising a Dutch Horror Comedy flick, that led to me killing zombies.

View on the film:

Crashing the cause of the outbreak into a building with rubbery CGI, directors Martijn Smits & Erwin van den Eshof work with cinematographer Joost van Herwijnen in making the zombies unleash splatter gags with an animated atmosphere rising from green gunge and dollops of red being splatted across the screen, as one of the zombies joins in with the humans, in taking down his fellow zombies.

Along with the gory delights, the directors spread stylish button mashing on-screen graphics onto the zombie take-downs, with close-ups on the mixed CGI and practical effects, green-spewing zombies landing with a thump, to each brutal slow-motion finisher move.

Ending up in jail after getting sacked and waking up the next day to find a zombie apocalypse taking place, the screenplay by Tijs van Marle follows easy-going, hapless Aziz chew through the zombies as he meets various amusing fellow misfits who come up with hilariously over the top violent methods to take down the zombie horde, as Aziz searches for his dream girl, whilst being kept busy killing a zombie.

Unbelievably good!
Fionka30 September 2013
I didn't expect much from the movie with a low budget and its quality was a really nice surprise. It's funny. It has memorable moments. It's nicely filmed. Actors are really good - even those playing zombies. It only proves you don't have to hire Hollywood stars to make a good movie. Makeup - well, even makeup is nice, even though you don't expect it to be. Yes, zombies are green, but how cares - it's definitely a bit better than when they look completely rotten and it's a parody - you shouldn't really be afraid of these poor creatures! And funny moments - I laughed even more than while watching "Shaun of the living dead", so yes - I really like the movie. Hope they will make a second one sometime in the future. :)

Verdict: Mad and Wonderful
MoviesReviews1018 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Story: We follow two brothers, two gangster friends, a beautiful female police officer and a shady business man as they try to escape Amsterdam after a zombie outbreak. We see how one wants to save a love interest from a seemingly impossible situation, while greed takes over others. We see how the group puts together of mostly idiots have to try and find weapons to survive and achieve their goals by escaping the danger. Simply put this is a crazy film, it makes fun of nearly every zombie film stereotype and is filled with plenty of over the top zombie kills. What makes these kills memorable is that they seem to come from the most random objects including bowling balls, tennis ball gun and giant mallet with many more. This is hugely enjoyable if not barmy storyline that you will remember and continue laughing after it has finished. (7/10)

Actor Review

Yahya Gaier: Aziz stuck in a dead end job before getting fired, he gets a call from the girl of his dreams and wants to save her during the zombie outbreak. Good performance playing the unlikely hero in the zombie outbreak. (7/10)

Uriah Arnhem: Nolan the big fella gangster who gets his hand stuck in a bowling ball which turns into a solid weapon for him. Good performance and easily the funniest character in the film. (7/10)

Director Review: Martijn Smits, Erwin van den Eshof – Good direction to create a funny horror comedy that you actually want to see who makes it too. (7/10)

from a bad day at work to a bad day in Amsterdam
tiemen-632-10176822 May 2013
Okay, so I just watched 'Zombibi'. This with reading the reviews on IMDb first. And I have to say: the acting of the cast is as bad as the acting of a 3-year old, because of the low-budget the special effects will make you cry and some shots in which they shoot zombies are used twice in the movie. But this actually makes the movie even funnier then before. And you won't only be laughing because of these things, there are as well a lot of funny jokes, funny scenes and so on.

Yet you have to know it is a Dutch movie, so they talk Dutch but you can get it underlined in English. Except for that I believe people from The Netherlands will like this movie even more because of the famous Dutch people in the cast and the familiar places in Amsterdam where the scenes in this movie were shot.

So the only thing i can say now is: just watch it! Tiemen, The Netherlands
