"Starship Troopers" was not a big hit when it arrived in 1997, and many audiences didn't know what to make of the darkly satirical tone created by "RoboCop" filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. In the years since its release, however, Verhoeven's violent, funny, action-packed sci-fi flick has been re-evaluated and become both a cult classic and a movie that some people still don't understand.
Adapted from Robert A. Heinlein's novel, "Starship Troopers" follows a group of youngsters who get swept up in being soldiers when alien bugs attack Earth. Of course, the war ends up being hell, and many of these fresh young faces are cut down in increasingly nasty ways. And then, just in case all of the satire went over your head, Verhoeven ends things by having Neil Patrick Harris show up dressed in a Nazi uniform.

Anime fan favourite Space Pirate Captain Harlock stars in a new movie... but is it worth the wait?
If you're a fan of manga, you probably already know Harlock, although his fan following is much larger in France, Quebec and Japan. Harlock is the brainchild of Leiji Matsumoto (creator of Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers). Harlock was created in the 50s, but his breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of the original television series, Space Pirate Captain Harlock. He has since then seen many incarnations, but he had been absent from our screens since 2002. Given the current trend of revisiting old franchise favourites, Harlock was bound to suffer the reboot treatment at one point. Harlock has already been rebooted several times over the years, long before the term "reboot" was actually coined, so it shouldn't have been a big deal, but some fans feared that Harlock's move to the big...

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" What's It About? Hugh Grant voices the Pirate Captain, a lovable loser and the leader of a ship full of swashbuckling outcasts. The Captain's quest to win the coveted "Pirate of the Year" award sets him on a slapstick journey involving a desperate-for-ladies Charles Darwin, a too-smart-for-humans chimpanzee and a gluttonous, murderous Queen Victoria. See It Because: Aardman Animation, the studio behind "Wallace & Gromit" and "Chicken Run," return with a stop-motion adventure bursting with never-ending slapstick and sly English witticisms; it's a great British riff on "Looney Tunes" and you'll need more than one viewing to catch all the jokes. I have no idea how studios choose their release dates, but this week is packed. It's not necessarily a week loaded with quality films, but considering the lackluster weeks recently I have no idea why they wouldn't have waited to unload some of these a couple weeks ago when they could have dominated a weaker marketplace. Some of the more intriguing titles are catalog selections in my "Even More" selection including individual releases of the Extended Editions of Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray and 100th Anniversary Blu-ray releases of Universal's Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, Airport and Harvey not to mention season releases of "The Walking Dead", "Homeland" and "Once Upon a Time". That said, there are a few solid titles among this week's releases and be sure and check out the new release dates as I now have confirmed dates for the DVD and Blu-ray releases of Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man and Brave.

Last week saw the release of Kevin Macdonald’s acclaimed documentary, Marley, alongside Peter Berg’s mammoth blockbuster, Battleship, and this week brings with it a handful of new films and, most importantly in my books, the long-anticipated release of The Walking Dead Season 2. Today is a good day.
It’s a fairly light week with new releases, so without further ado,
My pick of the week:
The Walking Dead – Season 2.
The Walking Dead – Season 2 Iframe Embed for Youtube

Ordinarily, I focus on television programmes after the week’s new film releases, but The Walking Dead deserves to be the exception to that rule.
The show is one of the finest currently on TV, and if you haven’t started, now is definitely the time to pick up the first two seasons. It’s not often we get...

It’s hard to be a Starship Troopers fan. After one cult favorite film established the celebrated Sci-Fi novels as a viable cinematic franchise, its two live-action sequels buried it under embarrassingly bad writing and acting that wasn’t much better. The sequels have always suffered from fan-fiction quality writing, and unfortunately Starship Troopers: Invasion, the latest entry in the struggle against the bugs, doesn’t have much else to offer besides some very pretty CGI, but even that isn’t without its flaws. A total lack of character depth and development and direction that favors visual style over narrative substance make it just another bad Sci-Fi movie that’s hard to care too much about—even with the entire Earth at risk.

The funny thing about Shinji Aramaki’s “Starship Troopers: Invasion” is that it looks a lot better when people are running around in their bulky space combat suits than when they’re out of them. When characters are just walking around in their undies, or in nothing at all (a common thing here), the CG animation leaves a lot to be desired. But that’s just one of the things about CG animation that I’ll never really be able to buy into. Fortunately there’s enough here in terms of wanton carnage, a totally fatalistic approach to warfare, and unrelenting bug action that helps me to overlook the film’s shortcomings. Directed by Aramaki, the man behind 2004′s “Appleseed” and “Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina” 3 years later, “Invasion” returns us to Robert A. Heinlein’s bug-infested universe, where the Federation continues its never ending battle against tough alien bug creatures...

Fans of science fiction, especially the kind that involves large space creatures tearing soldiers into bloody pieces, have often cited the 1959 Robert Heinlein novel Starship Troopers as one of the early precursors for that brand of the horror/sci-fi sub-genre.
It makes sense, since the original novel was hugely influential on James Cameron’s Aliens. And, in 1997, Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven took on Heinlein’s concepts with a big budget action movie that helped launch the careers of Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer and Denise Richards to a new level among genre fans.
In the 15 years since then, a number of people have managed to produce a couple straight-to-dvd sequels of varying qualities and a cartoon series which brings us to Starship Troopers: Invasion, a computer-animated action movie that continues the story using a style that’s somewhat inspired by Japanese anime. The Starship Troopers franchise is a bizarre animal. Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 original was overlooked by many as a bloody sci-fi blockbuster; little more than dull buggery. Point of fact, Starship Troopers is, true to Verhoeven form, a biting satire that takes skillful aim at the military industrial complex, fascism, and the price of patriotism. It is a film that is actually far smarter than a cursory glance would reveal. It is also far too good a film to suffer the indignities of two middling to poor direct-to-video sequels. However, the third film in the series did have the distinction of being directed by effects icon Phil Tippett, to date his only feature film. Starship Troopers 3: Marauder also brought back Johnny Rico himself, Casper Van Dien. For this fourth film, Van Dien is now a producer and the series has ventured into animated territory. Japanese director Shinji Aramaki brings us the story of a requisitioned spacecraft, a...

Citizens, prepare yourselves for an all new onset of bug attacks. This is not a drill. After three feature films, it turns out there is still more violent man-on-insect combat to explore within the Starship Troopers universe. An all new animated feature, Starship Troopers: Invasion, enjoyed its North American premiere at this year’s Fantasia Film Fest. A full review is brewing, but in the meantime, who better to introduce the movie and talk about the inner workings of this fourth installment of the franchise than Johnny Rico himself, Casper Van Dien. Though not lending his voice to the antecedent Rico in St:i, Van Dien did serve as a producer on the film. His intro was certainly lively and drew raucous reactions from Starship Trooper fans. Citizens! If you have ever wanted an opportunity to see Paul Verhoeven's pitch-perfect satire of fascism stripped of both its irony and wit, look no further than mecha-suit aficionado Shinji Aramaki's animated sequel Starship Troopers: Invasion and prepare yourself for a whole world of dumb, that's full of guns, but rarely fun. It is a shame because as an animated film Invasion is able to leap above the franchises' Dtv sequels in terms of scope and scale, as well as bringing back the franchise's original trio of protagonists. The film starts with a rescue team dropping in to evacuate a military facility run by a paler and creepier Carl Jenkins that has become overrun with bugs, and ends with a desperate attempt by ever stalwart (and...

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has unveiled the trailer for the CG-animated "Starship Troopers: Invasion" movie, produced by "Starship Troopers" star Casper Van Dien. Check it out below. Plot: The troopers of two starships have joined forces to terminate a massive bug attack at a federation outpost. Before the mission can be completed and the survivors evacuated, one ship abruptly departs and goes inexplicably dark. The remaining battle-hardened troopers race to the rescue, only to discover that the threat from the bugs is about to hit home. "Starship Troopers: Invasion" is directed by Shinji Aramaki (Halo Legends, Appleseed) and will hit stores on DVD and Blu-ray on August 28th. Trailer:...

While we wait for that “Starship Troopers” reboot that may or may not be PG-13, Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico himself) has been busy working with “Appleseed” director Shinji Aramaki to bring us the CG sequel “Starship Troopers: Invasion”. Check out a new trailer for the film below. Yes, that’s apparently a gratuitous shower scene and someone straddling someone in bed. The troopers of two starships have joined forces to terminate a massive bug attack at a federation outpost. Before the mission can be completed and the survivors evacuated, one ship abruptly departs and goes inexplicably dark. The remaining battle-hardened troopers race to the rescue, only to discover that the threat from the bugs is about to hit home. I’m still not a fan of the CG animation they have going on here. Looks a bit cheap to me. The female character designs in particular look a little wonky.

The Pact is currently available on video-on-demand and will receive a theatrical release on July 6th. I had a chance to interview Caity Lotz last month and just recently talked with Casper Van Dien about his role in the film. Continue reading to learn how he landed the role, his experience seeing the film for the first time at Sundance, and find out what horror movies scare him:
How did you become involved with this project? Was this something you had to audition for or did the director always have you in mind for this role?
Casper Van Dien: My manager got me an audition for it late at night. He told me I had an audition the next morning, and I tried to push it because I was watching my kids and I had no time to work on it. The next day, I went in and read...

It’s been a couple of months since the first one, but here’s a new (Japanese) trailer for Starship Troopers: Invasion, the CG-animated movie which comes from Sola Digital Arts, Inc and Shinji Aramaki, the anime director and mechanical designer on anime as Appleseed and its follow-up Ex-Machina.
A distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the survivors and bring military intelligence safely back to Earth. Carl Jenkins, now ministry of Paranormal Warfare, takes the starship on a clandestine mission before its rendezvous with the Alesia and goes missing in the nebula. Now, the battle-hardened troopers are charged with a rescue mission that may lead to a much more sinister consequence than they ever could have imagined….

The first trailer for Starship Troopers: Invasion didn't do much but show off one of the various power suits used in the movie. This new teaser trailer, however, gives us a pretty decent idea of what director Shinji Aramaki is bringing to the world of space marines and arachnoids that Paul Verhoeven brought to life for the first time on the big screen 15 years ago. Unsurprisingly, Invasion doesn't look wildly different from Aramki's biggest film to date, the 2004 anime Appleseed, only a bit more industrial and a little less cartoony. Some fans may not like the aesthetic, but at least it's not quite as bubbly and stiff as Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles. Since the trailer doesn't give us a clear look at the story or the characters, we turn to the...

While we wait for the inevitable Starship Troopers reboot, Sony is prepping the release of Starship Troopers: Invasion, an animated feature film from the studio's Stage 6 division and director Shinji Aramaki.
The preview actually offers a lot more footage than what was shown during a previously released WonderCon teaser. You want bug-killin' action. Well, you got it.
The story centers around 2 teams of Roughnecks: the Alpha 1 team embarking on a mission to rescue Fort Casey and the K-12 team already stationed at Fort Casey. The two war-depleted squads must band together with a common objective, but personalities and ambition ensure a bumpy ride.
On writing duties is Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay's Flint Dille. Look for the Starship Troopers: Invasion on DVD this summer.

The new all-cgi Starship Troopers sequel, aptly titled Starship Troopers: Invasion, has landed a new Japanese trailer, featuring the voice talent of Casper Van Dien, aka Johnny Rico from the original film. Van Dien has kind of waded into the straight-to-dvd bin since Starship Troopers hit theaters, but he also married a princess, so there's that. The CGI is reminiscent of Final Fantasy and features a bevy of bugs, bullets, and battleships (not the boardgame kind,...

Shinji Aramaki‘s Starship Troopers: Invasion is the new CG animated movie by Sony, and it will probably go straight to DVD/BluRay. Though I remember it as ‘trashy’ sci-fi, it will always have a special place in my heart, and I’m guessing that at least some of you geeks out there share my feelings, so this [...]

Back in March we featured a teaser trailer for Starship Troopers: Invasion, the new CG animated movie that Sony is making, and will likely end up going straight-to-dvd. Of course, Starship Troopers holds a special place in our heart, so we just like putting this one out there for fans to soak up if they're so inclined. Now we have a longer look at the new animated film, and while it doesn't look all that impressive on the character details, the action looks to be fairly well intact, even if it feels more like unfinished video game cinematics than a full animated film. There still might be some cool stuff to see in this flick though. Watch! Here's the new trailer for Shinji Aramaki's Starship Troopers: Invasion via Bleeding Cool: The story centers around two teams of Roughnecks: the Alpha 1 team embarking on a mission to rescue the distant...

I know I’ll end up watching director Shinji Aramaki’s animated sci-fi actioner “Starship Troopers: Invasion” at some point down the road, but it’s not really that high on my list at the moment. Although the flick looks to be nothing more than video game cutscenes edited together to make a feature-length movie, it honestly doesn’t look that bad. Of course, part of my love of the original movie involves Verhoeven’s bizarre sense of humor, which, from the looks of the latest trailer, is nowhere to be found. Then again, for most folks, that might be a good thing. Have a look at this synopsis: A distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the survivors and bring military intelligence safely back to Earth.

The Japanese trailer for Shinji Aramaki's CG animated film Starship Troopers: Invasion has been posted via Movie walker. Based on Robert Heinlein's sci-fi novel which been loosely adapted into a film franchise (and even an anime series), the general story tells a futuristic military waging an interstellar war against a hostile species of large insects known as the Arachnids or "Bugs". In this version, the film is set ten years after Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers while ignoring the rest of the sequels as canon. Some of the production designs will feature the new starships, power suits and the robotic Marauder with the distinct "mecha" aesthetic that you come to expect in Japanese anime. The script is written by Flint Dille (Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from...

Although Paul Verhoven's Starship Troopers wasn't a huge box office hit when it was initially released in 1997, it built up a cult following over the years, spawning an animated series plus a couple of direct-to-dvd sequels. Now Sony has decided to offer up another Dtv release that mixes both of these ideas. Starship Troopers: Invasion is a feature-length CG animated film directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed, Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina). They debuted a teaser trailer for the movie at WonderCon over the weekend, and if you ask me, it looks like it could pass for footage from a new Halo video game. I guess that kind of makes sense, especially considering that Aramaki also worked on a segment for Halo Legends, but still. I've said before that I'm interested in more feature-length CG movies that aren't aimed at kids, I just hope that the end product will resemble something more than a video game cinematic.

Last October brought news that a fourth Starship Troopers movie was in the works, that it would be an animated film from Appleseed director Shinji Aramaki and would focus on a rescue mission to save Carl Jenkins (Aka Neil Patrick Harris in Paul Verhoeven's film). It all sounded pretty promising, though that's not hard considering the two Starship Troopers straight-to-video live-action sequels set the bar pretty low and so a new animated take on the franchise can only hope to improve things. Today brings our first hint of what that hope will actually look like. IGN has the Starship Troopers: Invasion trailer premiere, which isn't quite what we were expecting. Remove the spaceships and this looks like the teaser trailer for Crysis 2. That's all well and good - the...

"I always get the shakes before a drop." While we expect this to go straight-to-dvd, I'm such a big Starship Troopers fan, and kind of on a sci-fi high with Prometheus (and Hunger Games), I wanted to feature it anyway. IGN has debuted the first teaser trailer for Starship Troopers: Invasion, the new CG animated movie that Sony is making. We first covered the announcement for it last year, including that Casper Van Dien might be back to voice one of the characters, but there's still not much confirmed yet. That said, we do get a quick tease here, and while it's not much I'm kind of intrigued. Take a look and tell us what you think. It basically plays like a suit-up scene that shows off the cool hi-tech equipment. The visuals looks amazing. Director Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed: Ex Machina) brings his great sense for production designs and action direction into the fourth film installment of the military sci-fi franchise. Starship Troopers: Invasion has been confirmed. And this is one sequel that may yet be half decent...
It’s been confirmed that a fourth Starship Troopers movie is on the way, which is going to be heading to our screens next year. Coincidentally, I was watching the first film just last night, and it remains a firm favourite. But then, I still get shudders about watching the first of the two crappy DVD sequels thus far, that looked like it had been filmed in someone’s garage. I understand the third movie is better, I’ve just not plucked up the courage to watch it.
There may be better news on the horizon, though. The new film, Starship Troopers: Invasion will be a CG animated production, which brings back happier memories of the TV show, Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles.
