nice little cgi movie
phil3116910 August 2012
Not stellar, but pretty good. Had all the regulars Carmen, johnny Rico and Carl the esp guy. Some good crazy action however a bit heavy on drama that didn't really work for me. Decent enough story and faithful to the original. A little overboard with the nudity, but hey. i like boobs as much as the next guy. Worth a rental for sure. Some effects and graphics worked really well at times, sometimes not so much. The bug animations were kinda stiff while the texture work was really good on the faces and "ahem" skin. You can tell which scenes they spent time polishing. By far much better then Starship Troopers 2 or 3. My only real complaint is that the story itself felt kinda rushed and didn't really have any nuance. It was a good story and some of the time I felt was wasted on things that were not needed at the cost of fleshing out the premise of the movie. Just my 2 cents.

not bad
camerondscott12 August 2012
If you enjoyed the first movie or the book, then this won't be terrible. Too each his own and all that, but I found it to be quite amusing. I was a fan of the book, the first movie was amusing even if it didn't follow the book too closely. With the limited graphics in the late 90s, the powered armor would not have looked good at all. The graphics are decent, the action sequences are well done. The movie seems rushed in some parts, the plot was nothing terribly complex, but it's a classic alien/bug hunt; people die in a variety of noble/self-sacrificial ways, as befits a cap trooper, bugs are killed and there's lots of explosions. Better than the previous three, but the bar was never set very high.

Way better than ST2 and ST3, though still have distance to ST1
daozhongbuer16 August 2012
I've been quite against of watching any new ST movies in recent years, because both ST2 and ST3 are really unsatisfactory for me. However after watching this movie, I have the feeling the ST movies have started going back to the right track.

Firstly, the movie has found the right audience. It's a movie for a simple story, a small incidence in the ST universe, not for deep philosophy. However, you have to admit that if the story writer can really put a little bit of philosophical ideas from the original novel into conversations and the environment around characters, just like the ST1 did, this new movie will be on a new level. And that's why ST1 is always way ahead of other ST movies. For the story, I give 7/10, with 3 marks off for the absence of in-depth philosophical ideas.

And then, I like the design of weapons and ships and many tiny concept things. This includes very careful design of a fleet of starships that follows the style of ST1. Other things like the suit of mobile infantry. Weapon designs. Airdrop of mechanized MI. Main guns of the space station. I should say I have seen the shadows of the original novel, and you can tell the designer have really put a lot of effort to making these things look comfortable, and surely it's just very fun to watch how these men's stuffs to work in the movie. For the artistic design, I give 9/10, with one mark off for the illogical uselessness of the protection ability of the MI armor.

In terms of the characters, everybody is poker-face. There is no room for showing the personality. There is also not enough conflict between characters as well. A good movie has to have conflict between characters, that's why Alien and Star Wars is epic. I can only give this part 5/10.

Therefore, if you are looking for a simple, straight forward movie, with cool graphic and awesome boy stuff. You should watch this movie. If you want to see some philosophical content, then you better wait for the next ST movie, not this one.

Not the best, but better than ST2
radicalreet12 August 2012
This movie brought me exactly what I was expecting. Soldiers killing bugs! This movie could have been better if they had bigger budget(I bet this movie had a pretty low one.) Animations was sloppy and it had some flaws. The story was good but the voices not so. Also.. The girls look like anime .

Overall.. Not the best starship troopers movie.. But way better than Starship Troopers 2.

Hopefully the remake of the original Starship Troopers from 1997 will be good.

Worth a look.

An ultra-violent, action-packed blast - nothing more, nothing less
dee.reid3 September 2012
"I always get the shakes before a drop. I've had the injections, of course, and hypnotic preparation, and it stands to reason that I can't really be afraid. The ship's psychiatrist has checked my brain waves and asked me silly questions while I was asleep and he tells me that it isn't fear, it isn't anything important - it's just like the trembling of an eager race horse in the starting gate... ...I couldn't say about that; I've never been a race horse. But the fact is: I'm scared silly, every time" - Juan "Johnnie" Rico, first lines, Robert A. Heinlein's "Starship Troopers"

I don't pretend to know everything that late sci-fi writer Robert A. Heinlein intended to put forth in his controversial landmark 1959 military science fiction novel "Starship Troopers." I do know that it's been hugely influential in science fiction literature and film ever since its publication 53 years ago. It was adapted into Paul Verhoeven's wildly prescient 1997 feature-length movie (which appeared to be more of a pro-/anti-war satire of Heinlein's novel), and more importantly (to me, anyway) the cast members of James Cameron's "Aliens" (1986) - my #5 movie, by the way - were required to read the book as part of their "basic training" for the film.

Regardless of what you think of Heinlein's points in the book, it's first-rate sci-fi entertainment and pro-war military propaganda of the first degree. I saw Verhoeven's 1997 film adaptation first, and to this day I still absolutely love that movie. I read the book some time afterward; I completed it in a single day - that's how immersed I was in Heinlein's insanely in-depth futuristic universe. Two sequels to Verhoeven's original film have been produced, and one animated sequel from "Appleseed" (2004) director Shinji Aramaki - 2012's "Starship Troopers: Invasion" (which was ultimately supported by an ultimately flawed script by screenwriter Flint Dille).

"Starship Troopers: Invasion" is the most worthwhile sequel so far to Verhoeven's 1997 cinematic offering of Heinlein's most celebrated work (for me, that is). Like the not-so-freakin'-bad "Starship Troopers: Marauder" (2008), "Invasion" takes a little bit more inspiration directly from the pages of Heinlein's original novel, even though "Invasion" is, in fact, a direct sequel - more or less - to Verhoeven's first live-action movie.

What connects this particular feature to its predecessors - despite being animated - is that three central characters from Verhoeven's 1997 film reappear here: Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez, and Carl Jenkins (who were played, respectively, by Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, and Neil Patrick Harris in Verhoeven's first film). Van Dien and "Starship Troopers" screenwriter/long-time Verhoeven collaborator Ed Neumeier serve as producers on "Invasion." "Starship Troopers: Invasion" is a nicely animated feature with a largely Japanese Anime' production team behind it, with American actors voicing the parts.

The film begins with the mysterious disappearance of the Federation Starship "John A. Warden," which was apparently conducting clandestine experiments involving the Arachnids, which was under the supervision of Carl Jenkins, now the head of the Ministry of Paranormal Warfare. A group of M.I. (Mobile Infantry) troopers, along with Captain Carmen Ibanez, are sent to investigate, only to discover a Bug plot that threatens the very fate of everything on Earth. And Johnny Rico, now a general, is forced to join the fray in order to save his friends and the galaxy from a full-scale Bug infestation.

Unlike its predecessors, the plot to "Starship Troopers: Invasion" is pretty straight-forward science fiction warfare and lacks the vicious humor aimed at satirizing wartime values and military propaganda that marked its three predecessors. Despite that, there is some slight humor to be found here (of the tough-guy military variety and not satirical), and some decidedly course language (and some gratuitous nudity). Instead, "Invasion" seems more closely tied to "Aliens" in its presentation and characterizations. You also see a more prominent display of the "powered suits" made famous in the pages of Heinlein's original novel.

Characters are pretty thin and it's hard to separate some of them from one another, but it's true here that both prominent and stock characters alike get slaughtered viciously in some particularly gruesome ways (even though it's also true that the Bugs appear to suffer a much heavier body count than the humans do). (It's quite remarkable that the presentation and overall appearance of the Bugs here is still quite faithful to their presentation in Verhoeven's original - where they were first designed by special effects artist Phil Tippett - though they're more for cannon-fodder here, rather than a misunderstood indigenous species defending their home from hostile foreign invaders.)

Shinji Aramaki created a lean, mean, and focused Japanese-style animated feature with "Starship Troopers: Invasion." The film takes a little more inspiration from Robert A. Heinlein's original book (which is quite good, in my opinion, for the film, at least), but it's still very much in line with the legacy put forth by Paul Verhoeven's 1997 film adaptation. It's an ultra-violent, action-packed blast - nothing more, nothing less.

And one more entry...
cedde612 January 2013
There is here very little added to Paul Verhoeven's misunderstood masterpiece. In fact the Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez and Carl Jenkins characters and even Basil Poledouris's theme tune are all back to join in a new group of tough-as-nail marines sent to rescue the survivors of Fort Casey and destroy the bug hive upon which the fort has been built. I won't be revealing too much by saying that things won't go according to plan and they'll end up trying to prevent a bug invasion on Earth.

This Japanese take on Robert A. Heinlein mythology more or less try to replicate Verhoeven's 1994 blockbuster with mixed results. It is action packed, standing proudly shoulders to shoulders with the crazy Dutchman in terms of violence, and with barely no slowing down in the pace. Needless to say, the notion of characterization is here merely academic which I don't think was the point of the film to begin with so that can be excused I suppose. However this makes this movie a confusing experience at times for so many male characters actually looking very much alike while sharing a similar type of voice.

But for me, the main let down however reside in the fact that I couldn't shake the impression of watching a video game with its many levels: a very brief explanation of the mission is followed by a shooting session to the next brief explanation of the next mission and so on and so forth, making the feeble attempts of humanization of its synthetic characters laughable.

In the end, the resulting piece becomes a series of interchangeable battles devoid of any emotional impact. At best, it might entertain a certain target audience for a short while but I wage it will certainly be quickly forgotten by almost everyone.

Fit for purpose
thekarmicnomad3 August 2013
I am a massive fan of the first real action movie so I can't help myself from grabbing these titles when ever I see them.

The CGI is fairly good, not up to some of the other CGI feature length titles that have come before it, but totally watchable.

I didn't really enjoy this movie but to write a fair review I think you have to consider its target audience. This is a space action romp. There is no onion to peel here; no layers of story where the viewer obtains a deeper understanding of the human condition.

This is about aliens, explosions, space ships, leather cat-suit cladded action models and cartoon boobies. In that respect it does its job perfectly!

The dialogue is cheesy, the characters are so full of testosterone each is a whisper away from throwing themselves on a grenade for the Republic (and lots of them do)but that is part of the fun.

If you can take this at face value you will have a great evening. If you want something with depth or serious storyline then best keep walking.

Starship Troopers ...anime-style
lysergic-acid12 August 2012
I didn't have high hopes for this film, as Starship Troopers is the type of franchise where, like Aliens or Terminator, you really need a big budget to properly do justice to on screen. And seeing as this clearly wasn't a major production on the same level as FF: The Spirits Within, GitS (1995), or even FF7: Advent Children, I was expecting it to be on the same level as Appleseed or Renaissance or, at best, Ultramarines. I mean, just look at what happened with ST2 and ST3 with their $9M budgets (about the same budget as Ultramarines).

However, I was actually pleasantly surprised by the animation quality of this film. It's not The Spirits Within, but it's at least on par with Advent Children. The film doesn't go for an ultra photo-realistic look, but the bugs, the armor, the ships, the environment, etc. are all exceedingly well rendered. The bugs in particular look extremely realistic (especially being chopped down by machinegun rounds), as do all the on-screen physics.

Still, there _were_ some flaws... First off, there's a distinct anime aesthetic to the film that seems ill-suited for this franchise. You'll recognize the costumes, equipment, etc. as being from the ST universe, but still with an anime-spin to it. This is especially obvious in Carmen's weird Gundam-style sci-fi-Victorian uniform. Somehow, a baby blue "crop top" military dress jacket and matching corset just doesn't seem to fit the ultra-macho, utilitarian culture of the fascist Terran Federation (nor the rest of the ST universe). In fact, she looked more like a flight attendant than a starship captain.

Likewise, the body and facial styles in the film are all stereotypical of anime characters--to the point that most of the male protagonists look pretty much alike. I suppose that's why they had to resort to giving Rico an eye patch, Hero a distinctive scar under his eye, and Holyman his weird anime-style tattoos and pale complexion.

Even the semi-mechanized mobile infantry body armor/spacesuits seemed to have a bit of a corseted waistline. That said, the ships, armor, and space station designs in this film are still very high quality overall, rivaling even the first movie in some respects. Even the overly-Halo-inspired-corset-wearing MI battle suits are better looking than the armor shown in any of the previous ST works. Though I personally would have stuck with the black and field grey color scheme for the mobile infantry gear/costumes instead of the jungle green cameo (this is supposed to read C-A-M-O, as in camouflage; please ignore IMDb's idiotic autocorrection) they used in the film, which is more reminiscent of U.S. marines than German storm troopers (and also not making much sense in space or inside of the silvery monolithic starships and space stations).

The overall CGI quality is actually very impressive considering that in theory, Stage 6's target production budget is at most the same as that of Ultramarines (the admirable but ultimately disappointing WH40K animated film), and yet ST: Invasion is head and shoulders above what Ultramarines managed to achieve with their budget.

If you want to be picky, sure, there are a few stereotypical mannequin moments that nearly all 3D animes tend to have, where the body movements seem a bit too rigid or the facial animation doesn't seem quite right (like the virtual actor had too much Botox). But all of this is fairly easy to overlook when you're fully engaged in the plot and action.

Alas, there is ONE critical area where ST:I falls flat on its face: voice acting. Carmen and Johnny's VO actors were decent, but much of the rest of the cast did not seem to be voiced by professional voice actors (or at least properly cast voice actors)--another sign of the film's anime heritage--and was quite painful to sit through. Like so many other great Japanese animated works, this one was ruined in the final leg of the race by a studio that just didn't care enough about the English voice-overs to get it done right.

It's a real pity, as the story was actually pretty serviceable and the rest of the film was very high quality overall, with only the aforementioned quibbles (all fairly minor and easily overlooked), and would probably do well with a major release in North America if not for the painfully bad English VOs. And supposedly this film was never even dubbed in Japanese (at least Akira and most other animes with poor English dubs are watchable in Japanese with English subs). It's such a severe flaw and stands in such stark contrast with the rest of the film, that I'd consider petitioning Stage 6/Sony to release the raw audio tracks of the film and let the community re-dub the VOs.

Expected More
Syrpfy8810 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say I was extremely excited for this movie. Rated R, animated ( don't have to deal with the constrictions of a live movie budget as we've seen in the sequels) but over all I was a little disappointed.

I always have high hopes for this franchise and it seems that it never gets a fair shake to shine.

Upsides : graphics are pretty good, You feel slightly nostalgic watching it, you get to see bugs die, some animated nudity ;)

Downsides : Lame plot, could have been something much more then it is. The graphics were good but when it came to the actual humans it felt like you were watching a metal gear cut scene. You only start having some fun watching this movie in the last 20 - 30 minutes.

All in all even though Roughnecks was made about 13 years ago, I would rather take have another couple episodes of that series then this.

The only reason I rated it a 7 is I love starship troopers, Favourite movie of all time, it should be a huge franchise but this movie probably won't appeal to anyone but die hard fans.

CGI bugs and boobs
Darkside-Reviewer17 January 2021
The original Starship Troopers (1997) film is one of the funniest and goriest movies in the science fiction action genre. The popularity of the first movie spawned two sequels that sadly weren't anywhere near as good as the original film.

Starship Troopers Invasion story follows a group of Black Ops mobile infantry soldiers who are tasked with infiltrating a military ship gone dark after a Black Ops mission gone wrong. The starship Alesia commanded by captain Carmen Ibanez tracks down the military ship gone dark. The Black Ops team along with Captain Ibanez board the ship to find out why the ship went dark. They quickly discover the dead bodies of the ships crew aswell as the shot up bodies of some of the terran bugs who appeared to have taken over the ship and killed the crew. The team reboot the ships dead engines and upon doing so unleash an army of terran bugs along with a bug queen who has taken over the engine room and now controls the entire ship. The teams numbers begin to dwindle as they fight off a ship full of bugs while trying to unravel a plot of secret genetic experimentation on the bug queen to try and take control of the bug army.

The story includes the main characters from the original movie. Mobile infantry soldier turned general Johnny Rico, pilot turned captain Carmen Ibanez and minister Carl Jenkins who is capable of using psychic powers and mind manipulation. Though these are technically the same characters as in the original movie sadly they have completely different personalitys and looks than in the original essentially making these "returning" characters redundant when they share little to no resemblance to their original characters.

The new characters have no real personality and are all just copies of better characters from the original movies only with new names. The voice acting is very mono tone and quiet giving these characters very little energy or personality.

There are some decent action scenes in the movie that involve plenty of blood, gore and bodily dismemberment which does make up for the lack of likable characters especially when you get to see most of them die. There's also a fair amount of CGI nudity in the first twenty minutes of the movie which shows at least three of the movies female characters naked from the front and back not full frontal but close enough that's for sure.

Starship Troopers Invasion was directed by Shinji Aramaki who had previously directed several other CGI and animated films from Appleseed (2004), Appleseed Ex Machina (2007) and even the very successful Halo Legends (2010). I always liked Shinji Aramakis work on animated movies and anime shows more than his work making CGI animated movies.

I recommend watching Starship Troopers Invasion at least once while it's nowhere near as good as the original movie it still manages to entertain and provide plenty of blood, gore and nudity that Starship Troopers is well known for.

Fun to watch
I loved the first movie (directed by Verhoeven). With the young cast at that time.

They took all the elements of the first movie, and made it a very good animated feature ! Hope this will reboot the franchise in a good way (forgetting the sequels and the bad animated series).

But it is like entering in a big video game demo with non-stop action scenes.

Very entertaining, popcorn in a bucket, and sit tight to watch it with friends. NOTE: not really for kids, because there are some nudity, violence and gore scenes.

Surprisingly good
deatman923 November 2012
When I was younger I was always a big fan of starship troopers and ever since then it has had a place in my heart even though as I got older I realize it is a B movie. Then I saw the second one and was horribly disappointed so I didn't even bother with the third one. I had not even heard of this CGI version until last night so I decided to give it a try. Im so glad I did.

This movie blows the third and second out of the water and it may even be better then the first one. Personally I just liked the epicness of the first one if they had done this one like that it would have been better. The CGI is good and so is the story line and action sequences the only downside about this is the acting, Some of the characters are sub-par at best.

If you are a big fan of first starship troopers well I highly suggest you give this one a watch. It is probably the best one to be made so far and they just make more like this.

Story was so bad it was painful to watch
gemfarrell4 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The story was so cheesy and shockingly unrealistic I had to turn it off with 25minutes left to go, and I really do love any type of sci-fi/space war movies... But, I'm not 2 years old.

1 - The 'federation can build interstellar fleets, but cant use simple scanning equipment or shoot a starship down.

2 - Earth has zero defenses and a wormhole right beside it, a single ship manages to rip them up and land on earth.

3 - The dialog/story is so bad I consider it insulting and the dumbness of the characters is really, really annoying(I'm being very, very nice here guys...).

The CGI was great, this movie could have been epic, but the story was so... "hollywood" that it became just too painful to watch. I heard this movie had a budget of 9m or something, nine Million, what they did with that money is beyond me, they certainly didn't put it towards this film.

I'll give it a 1 for decent graphics, its temping to give it a 2 but we have had good graphics for Years, it failed in every other aspect, I think the only explanation for this movie is that they are trying to make people hate sci-fi by making absolutely insultingly terrible films :(

IT AIN'T OVER YET...
nogodnomasters7 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Unable to get any real actresses to take their clothes off for another sequel, they decided to make a film they can easily convert into an action game. Enough people have died so Johnny Rico is now a general with the looks of Caspar Van Dien and the voice of David Matranga. Like my kitchen, in the never ending story against bugs, the crew of a starship investigates the silence of the John A. Warden, another vessel.

The results are fairly expected as the bugs bring the battle home. Major Henry 'Hero' Varro has become the new hero bug killer. The 2 deleted scenes looked like they were in the film. The picture of Rico on the back of the DVD cover is reversed. Good cast of characters that would have been better without the CG animation.

PARENTAL GUIDE: F-bomb, sex? early CG nudity. Adult language in the gag reel.

Action packed
kosmasp22 November 2012
So this is for an adult audience, but the same was true for the original Starship Troopers. And while this never reaches that height, it is a really good and entertaining entry into the series. There's some nudity and a lot of blood. If you are a sensible viewer you might want to stay away from this (don't be fooled by the fact it's an animated movie, if you don't know Japanese Anime).

I also like the fact, that viewers of the original movie might see some winks concerning characters and other things. Nice additions then and working nicely with the story too. There's not that much story, but it still should be able to give you your moneys worth (just know what to expect)

Nothing too impressive.
Boba_Fett113813 August 2012
This was far from impressive. And that comes from a guy who even enjoyed watching "Starship Troopers 3: Marauder"!

Well, I admit, it's not being a horrible movie either but there just is no good reason for you ever to watch this animated movie, not even if you're really into the whole Starship Troopers franchise. It doesn't stand out franchise in any way and also adds absolutely nothing to the franchise as a whole.

The first thing that becomes obvious about this movie, pretty early on already, is the fact that it isn't being anything that impressive to look at. It's one of those computer animated movies, of which the graphics don't look nearly as impressive as the ones used for some video games nowadays. And I'm really not exaggerating! This is the sort of stuff that might had been impressive to look at 10 years ago but by today's standards it's being a bit lacking to look at. Not that the movie is a horrible or fake looking one but it just absolutely never impresses in any way of form with its animations. Not with the character design, not with action, not with anything!

But what makes the movie worse is that it also doesn't has a decent script to back it up. I couldn't care less about anything that happened in this movie, which was all due to the story not being solid or exciting enough. It's all some very typical stuff and the movie never goes all out on anything. I would even call this movie a bit of a bore at parts, especially during the moments in which the characters interact with each other and the movie tries to do some character building. It's not interesting at all, which might also be due to the fact that all of the characters are wooden looking ones and are hard to tell apart from each other.

The movie feels like nothing more than just another cheap movie to cash in on the whole Starship Troopers franchise, without attempting to do and try anything new. For this reason alone you are already being better off skip watching this movie.

Well worth watching for fans of the franchise...
paul_haakonsen31 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Actually "Starship Troopers: Invasion" was a much needed injection to the "Starship Troopers" franchise after it had suffered with not so great sequels and much worse animated episodes. This 2012 installment to the franchise takes us back to the level of the first original movie, except it is a CGI animated movie, not a real live action movie.

The story is as to be expected from a "Starship Troopers" movie; lots of action, lots of bugs, lots of guns, and not too deep dialogue. A bug controlled ship is heading for Earth, and it is up to the mobile infantry to stop a bug invasion on Earth. But the psychic division is working on something top secret.

Despite it being an entertaining movie and good enough story, it was basically just a repeat of stuff from previous movies. There wasn't all that much innovation here, aside from the bug that controlled the ship and the newfound powers of Carl.

Something did puzzle me, with the vast size of the Federation, why are Carl, Carmen and Rico always, and I mean always, running into one another no matter what part of the universe a story takes place in? It is starting to get to the point where it is pathetically lame. Take the franchise and use some of the established characters if you have to use familiar faces, but these three running into each other again and again is just starting to wear thin. Introduce new faces and expand on the lore and story of the franchise, don't just have the new faces become cannon-fodder (which most of them sadly turns out to be).

And now that we are on the topic of the same characters running into each other again and again, it would have worked better if they had actually cast the original actors and actresses to do the voices for these repeat-appearing characters. It would have lifted up the believability a notch.

The CGI used in "Starship Troopers: Invasion" was great. I really loved the details in textures and all the small details that you'd notice if you are a 'real' fan of the franchise. However, personally, I do think that the nudity (despite it being CGI) was tacky and pointless, and the movie would have fared a bit better if they had opted not to have nudity in it.

"Starship Troopers: Invasion" is a great comeback for the "Starship Troopers" franchise, and it is a well worthy addition to any movie collection. However, despite the movie can be seen independently of the prior movies (live action and animated alike), I would suggest that you do watch them, to get up to speed with the lore and with the character's stories and motivations.

If you liked the first movie, you will probably not mind this..
drew_atreides6 January 2013
...i must admit that i had no idea this movie even existed until i saw it on TheMovieNetwork up here in Canada the other night. Like many reading this review, i was a big fan of the original STARSHIP TROOPERS movie. It's one of my absolute favourite films. The subsequent sequels (i watched all of Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, and only part of "Starship Troopers 3: Marauder") were rather disappointing.

I did, however, also see more then a few episodes of the animated series "Roughnecks" and liked what i saw. I guess i'm just a sucker for STARSHIP TROOPERS.

This animated movie was a nice treat. I really liked getting to see the characters of Rico, Carl and Carmen again, and getting to see how far each had progressed in their military careers. This movie, more then any other, feels like a true sequel to the original film.

There isn't anything too original here. The movie feels a bit like a riff on James Cameron's ALIENS, but the action is good, and they get the FEEL of the original movie right. You can definitely see some ANIME influences in the design of the armours and the weaponry.

There is some animated nudity of the female variety, but they don't get carried away with it.

You do have many of your standard military-movie clichés. This movie is definitely not trying to re-invent the wheel.

If you enjoyed the characters of Rico, Carl and Carmen in the first film, then i would recommend checking this one out. It is definitely not the worst entry in the Starship Troopers saga. Aside from the animated series, it is probably the best thing since the original film!

A different feel cause of the newly adapted CGI animation
avadheshbagla12 August 2012
Every since the first Starship Troopers film which was brilliant SCi-Fi action thriller this series always has its fans hoping against hope. This 1 is a CGI based film whose graphics looks like xbox360 games. Rico, Carmen are back and the script and action is decent. The animation script borrows from and feels like Aliens and several other such genre films compressed by bits into this 1. But for PPS who cant get enough of the troopers this is a just above average flick, which entertains with its action and thrills in a decent sort of way. Much better than any of the other sequels ever since the first (Starship film released) by a far shot i think at least. Watch it if Ur a fan and want to turn back the clock and see some bugs getting squashed avoid if u expecting a lot more! And it is Rated R for good reason so the animation is targeting the older youth rather than teens or kids, so not for Children certainly.

A lot better than expected
georgebugan10 August 2012
The thing is boys and girls: this isn't the Shawshank Redemption...There's gratuitous nudity, corny dialog and not a lot of subtext. The thing is that Starship Troopers was never meant for anything like that; the setting is a sci-fi universe with much more gore, trash and nudity than would be expected. This movie is meant for the old Starship Troopers fans, those who know the movie (the first for god's sake) and the Roughnecks animated series; it isn't a good introduction to the setting but it wasn't meant to be. Overall I would give it an 8/10 because I was expecting a respectable follow-up to to the series that was graphically polished, sensible towards character development and not very predictable from a storyline point of view and as far as these basic requirements are concerned, it doesn't disappoint. Overall, if you liked the source material, and you know the setting this is a nice follow up and much better than the god-awful movie sequels. Despite my individual rating of 8/10, I gave the movie a rating of 10/10 if only to balance out the people who I assume weren't all that familiar with the setting and under voted a movie which, from an objective point of view, cannot possible receive less than a 6/10.

Should have spent the budget doing a Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles sequel
xamtaro19 October 2012
The Arachnid Bugs are back but not in some second rate low budget Direct-to-video movie. This time the Starship Troopers franchise explodes onto screen as an R-Rated, cutting edge CGI feature film from the director of Appleseed Ex Machina and Halo Legends. The result is the beautifully animated but ultimately shallow STARSHIP TROOPERS: INVASION. At very least, this movie has learned from previous mistakes and manages to be decent entertainment fare with enough action and eye candy to thrill all.

I was slightly disappointed that this was not a continuation of the critically "Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles" CGI TV series. Instead, it is a continuation of the movie series that started with Paul Verhoven's first film and continued in two direct to DVD live action movies.

A big plus, especially for fans of the franchise, is that the characters from the first Starship Troopers movie return and play major roles in the story. Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez and Carl Jenkins are now seasoned veterans with Rico now a general leading his "Marauder" Mech squad (introduced in Starship Troopers 3), Ibanez a fleet captain and Jenkins the ever secretive head of paranormal warfare. Sadly, STARSHIP TROOPERS: INVASION relies too much on tying into the previous movies that it is barely able to stand on its own.

No introductions or character development are given to the returning characters. A cast of new characters are featured but none of them go beyond your typical "hard edged space marine squad" stereotype characters. There is the token Asian character who (surprise surprise) practices kung fu, big tough African American, the tough chick and the quiet gal for sexy factor, strong silent hero, the list goes on. At least the voice cast does a top notch job that is only limited by the mediocre script which only calls for wannabe "tough talk".

The story also starts off in a complete mess with a Mobile Infantry taskforce sent to evacuate Fort Casey, a base overrun by the Bugs. Carl appears with a secret weapon and with no explanation steals a ship, Captain Ibanez takes another ship and goes in pursuit, a Bug Queen is introduced, our main squad tries to retake the first ship and people die. No one knows the characters motivations or their personalities aside from the superficial characterizations. Beyond that, newcomers who are not familiar with the franchise would just be lost among the jargon, the characters who all just seem to know each other without any introduction to who they are or a recap on what they had gone through in the past together. The film's main mistake is grounding itself too strongly in what has come before and thus making the film near inaccessible to newcomers to the franchise.

If it is not the convoluted heap of a story that would win over viewers, it is definitely the action and the visuals. STARSHIP TROOPERS INVASION brings back the powered suits and the mechs that were featured in the original novel but absent from the first movie. Not only is this movie the closest one can get to the book in terms of the Federation's weapons and tactics, but it looks awesome too. The CGI featured in this film is nowhere near the big budget Pixar movies, but it gives Final Fantasy Advent Children and Resident Evil Damnation a run for their money in terms of visual splendor. Hair flows, movements are smooth, and the filming style mimics that of live action movies, thus making the CGI look a lot better than it really is. The movie truly earns its R rating with bloody dismemberment, gore and even explicit nudity. Battles are rapid, tight and epic; they would have definitely required a budget higher than the previous 3 movies combined if they were in live action.

Leave it to the Japanese to be able to visualize Starship Troopers right. Ironic in that Starship Troopers (the novel) was highly influential in the creation of the "Real Robot" genre first popularized by Mobile Suit Gundam. But like previous Japanese CGI projects, style overpowers substance and no amount of visual beauty, creative directing or eye candy can excuse a confusing, convoluted mess of a story with none of deeper themes that its predecessors had nor the complete lack of character development. Watch this purely for the action, the visuals and maybe that one nudity scene.

better than expected, but not actually good
paul-26867 October 2016
Yes, this movie was better than expected, better than the other sequels (which lowered our expectations)... but that doesn't mean it was actually good. Not even close.

Read the book twenty years ago, loved it, and mostly enjoyed Verhoeven's funky interpretation in 1997. Nauseated by ST2 and ST3.

Just bemused by this one.

A ridiculous predictable plot... continuity weirdness everywhere... flat characters... stilted voice acting... lines so corny they were make you laugh AT the film, not with it.

The campy, corny style of the original was part of the satire, and it was kind of brilliant. The corn here was either a tone deaf imitation, or more likely just clunky filmmaking.

But! Some good art, tasty eye candy, creative sound, and a few good sci-fi ideas. Definitely not a TOTAL waste of time.

Kept me entertained all the way
brooke_gaylene15 May 2013
I really like the Starship Troopers franchise, all of the movies including this one.

They are lots of fun, lots of action and lots of special effects. This time thought its a CGI version, a bit more serious, with a little bit lame script but still good movie.

I love science-fiction/horror and CGI movies and this had it all, including a little CGI nudity and muscles mm-mm.

Every character in the movie was ready to be the hero and ready to die for the cause, each one was a strong enough character for you to be able to pick your favourite. Which is always good, not like some movies where the characters are weak and boring and you don't care if they live, die, succeed or fail miserably.

The plot felt predictable and i found myself thinking i could guess what was going to happen next but then all of a sudden it changed and caught me by surprise. Just when you thought they were safe they wasn't and just when you thought they were goners it all turned around in their favour...or did it? You will have to watch and see.

Over all it was entertaining movie and i would be happy to see more either real actors or CGI...its all good.

P.S Keep watching the end credits.

Video game visual presents smooth skin and gnarly bugs, though the script is still from the 90s
quincytheodore23 March 2015
Many might not know Starship Troopers, despite being a cult classic, has a couple of less than stellar sequels. Opting for all CG approach for the fourth one, Invasion is crafted with heavy anime Japanese touch. It has so many resemblances to video game graphic, down to facial and body structures, which gives it a chance for spectacular effect. Be that as it may, the material still doesn't go beyond generic sci-fi banters.

Story follows the crew of Alesia as they perform dangerous missions and uncover secret of the bugs. The graphic is good, an above average quality of CG at that time, and this different direction caters both to franchise fans and general sci-fi enthusiasts. For most part, the rendition is glossy and proportional. It presents its highest production value on gratuitous naked digital girls and gory action. It does stutter occasionally, in a few scenes the action seem rigid and facial expression is rather bland.

Japanese video game screenplay is notoriously hampered with campy dialogues or over-the-top situations. Those who have played popular video game franchise such as Resident Evil will notice similar kinks on Invasion. Characters are made with stereotypical personalities and looks, a somewhat westernized army appearance for animation genre. Sexy blonde, rugged soldier and everything in between. The film attempt to give some depth to the characters, but its script just isn't up to task.

It can be cringe-worthy to hear what these people say. Macho quips, overly melodramatic lines and even catchphrases are thrown with reckless abandon. Dubbing isn't that bad, they do their best with the jarring lines. Some level of knowledge of the series might be required as it lacks narrative, and even then the story barely wraps up. To its credit, the action part is presentable. A couple of high octane scenes are better than most in sci-fi genre.

Starship Troopers: Invasion might not reach the same pinnacle of its original, but as a popcorn flick it provides enough chuckles and gazes for brief delight.
