I usually personally tend to be more attracted to the darker-toned artistic kinds of film shorts, but this was so awesome, hypnotically colourful, and just sheer different to anything I'd ever seen before, that I could not help but love and admire it. A boiling sea of change and colour, forever churning in cycles... Think, hyper-artistic! When I first saw it I was totally blown away, there's so much to see and absorb in such a short space of time. And for the full ten minutes I was mesmerised. I hope this won *all* the awards of whatever film festival it was entered in! From start to finish, the imagery just completely drew me in. The sequence with the underwater puppets that look a lot like living neon-flashing disembodied brains is especially amazing. The startling little blurts of noise they emit are pretty hilarious! It has a strong sense of weightlessness and fluidity, and it evokes thoughts of life and evolution. As the cascades of vivid swirling colour, the incredible special effects both computer-generated and physical, seamlessly blend together in an almost kaleidoscopic effect that very effectively creates a surreal journey through evolution and back again. It just takes you and you go with it! The sheer creativity behind the actions as the ghostly shapes fly across the screen in opposite directions, merging and then splitting from each other as they go, pushing the dancer's bodies into new and unearthly forms of downright alien beauty, achieving motions unachievable without the uncanny special effects used, and how it all builds to a magnificent crescendo is a resounding visual triumph and just something immensely magical to see! This has to be seen to be believed. And the music that accompanies the sublime light-show is about as perfect a match for the movements as one could possibly hope for. ::: It's bizarre, mystifying, and totally incomprehensible, yet to me it's also one of the most visually and spiritually powerful and stirring short films I've ever had the pleasure of seeing, and I've seen a whole lot. Solipsist is a fantastical work of art that doesn't need to be understood to be loved.
