James Cameron and Avatar: The Way of Water, the long-awaited sequel to Avatar (2009), debuted atop the box-office weekend with 134 million over its first three days in theaters.
While it is hard to say at this point exactly how much Avatar: The Way of Water will eventually make, it should make for interesting box-office watching over the next few weeks. The film finished 128.4 million ahead of the second-place film, Violent Night, which held onto second place with 5.6 million over the weekend to bring its three-week total to 35.5 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s top film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever managed 5.4 million over the last three days, dropping it to a third place finish this weekend. The Marvel film now boasts a six-week total of 419 million, so it’s not all bad. Similarly dropping a spot to finish in fourth place was Strange World with 2.2 million. This gives the film a four-week total of 33.8 million.

‘The Whale’ With Brendan Fraser Makes Its Own Waves In ‘Way Of Water’ Weekend – Specialty Box Office
A24’s release of Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale had a strong holdover its second weekend out, grossing 168.5k on the same six screens in NYC and LA where it opened its first frame to the biggest per theater average of the year – beating the distributor’s March release of Everything Everywhere All At Once.
This weekend’s PTA is 28.3k. The Whale’s estimated domestic cume through Sunday is 596k.
With a 360,000 debut, its per screen average of 60,000 was also the second largest limited opening since 2020 and helmer Aronofsky’s best opening since Black Swan in 2010.
Everything Everywhere opened to a 50k PSA on four screens. It has grossed over 100 million globally and The Whale won’t have that trajectory at the box office. But it’s a huge comeback for its star. Fraser, the former action star of The Mummy franchise, plays an obese, reclusive English teacher struggling...

The weekend is over, the cash has been counted, the credit card receipts have been tabulated and as expected James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water came out on top with a reported 134 million opening weekend. That number is Way below even the most modest of expectations. On Thursday some predicted around 200 million (even I overestimated in my prediction of 180 million), on Saturday it looked like 150 million but I’m not sure how many saw it coming in this low.
The thing with James Cameron blockbusters is: they don’t tend to be front loaded. We have come to expect films to have massive opening weekends followed by severe drops. Think about the over 60 declines Marvel movies have suffered lately. The Way of Water saw only a 15 decline from Friday to Saturday, even a movie like Top Gun: Maverick saw a 27 Friday to Saturday decline. James Cameron has built...

It feels like in the pandemic era, Hollywood gives big blockbusters arguably too much breathing room to avoid another, smaller movie being walked all over. Just look at what happened with "The Batman" earlier this year, for example. That is currently happening right now, as virtually everyone is steering clear of James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water," which washes up in theaters 13 years after the original's record-breaking run at the box office this weekend. But that comes at a cost, and that cost this past weekend was one of the worst weekends at the box office of the entire year. And folks, it was very bad. The only winner in the bunch was "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," which took the top spot for the fifth week in a row.

For five weeks in a row, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has managed to maintain its hold on the top spot of the box-office weekend.
Leading the pack again this weekend, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever held first place by a margin of 2.4 million while earning 11.1 million in its fifth weekend of release. The film now has an overall total of 409.8 million. Also standing pat in its spot from last weekend was Violent Night which brought in 8.7 million in its second week of release to brings its total to 26.7 million. The animated film Strange World also stood its ground to remain in third place with 3.6 million over the weekend, raising its three-week tally to 30.5 million. Ensconced in fourth place again this week was the horror film The Menu which added 2.7 million this weekend to lift its four-week total to 29.0 million. After four consecutive weeks atop the box-office weekend top ten, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever now sports an overall total of 393.7 million.
Although its numbers have dropped, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever still held first place by 4.3 million as it finished with 17.6 million in its fourth weekend of release. This was enough to hold off newcomer Violent Night which debuted in second place with 13.3 million. Dopping one spot to finish in third was Strange World which added 4.9 million over the weekend to bring it two-week tally to 25.5 million. Climbing a spot to finish in fourth place, The Menu added 3.6 million over the weekend to lift its three-week total to 24.7 million. Flipping with The Menu and falling to fifth place was Devotion which brought in 2.8 million over the weekend to raise its two-week total to 13.8 million.

Some might say that second place is nothing to write home about, but not in the case of David Harbour’s violent holiday action-comedy “Violent Night.” It opened in 3,682 theaters against Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which has topped the box office since opening in mid-November four weeks ago.

It has currently grossed 393.7 million domestically, so expect it to cross 400 million in the coming week. It has grossed 339 million overseas to cross the 700 million mark, globally.

Focus Features’ Spoiler Alert opened on six screens to an estimated 85k, or 14k per theater, in a crowded arthouse market. Strong exit polls and word of mouth – 94 in the top two boxes – could help built out this movie, which will likely be more audience-focused than awards-buzz driven.
“We are encouraged to see Spoiler Alert playing great and connecting with audiences,” said Focus distribution chief Lisa Bunnell. “We expect the film to broaden its audience and reach as we begin our national expansion.” The Michael Showalter pic based on Michael Ausiello’s memoir ‘Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies’ and staring Jim Parsons, Ben Aldridge and Sally Field expands Dec. 9.

Early December box office is worse than usual and next weekend will be rock bottom with no new wide studio openings. After that, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) comes to the rescue.
Thanksgiving holdovers and expansions drive this period and this year was a recipe for weak results with a disastrous Disney animated release (“Strange World”), lack of interest in “Devotion” (Sony), expansions of “The Fabelmans” (Universal) and “Bones and All” (United Artists) that don’t to come close to their potential and only one week for Netflix’s limited “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
It would have been worse without Universal smartly placing a new lower-budget (20 million) horror film into the void. Tommy Wirkola’s “Violent Night” with David Harbour as a decidedly aggressive Santa Claus came to the rescue of a family under siege and brought a 13.3 million opening, above projections. Helped by better-than-average initial reaction,...

“Spoiler Alert” (Universal), based on Michael Ausiello’s poignant memoir, debuted in six theaters and provided a spark for the specialized market. It took in 85,000 — at the higher end for this season. That’s enough to justify the brief platform before it expands to a multi-hundred theater run this Friday.
Among traditional specialized titles, we’re confronting a discomfiting reality: This once-vibrant adult audience isn’t showing up, but non-traditional releases are thriving. Fathom Events now boasts two out-of-nowhere successes in three weeks. “I Heard the Bells,” about composer of the classic Christmas carol took in nearly 2.6 million for four days on 474 theaters for #7 overall. And its presentation of two episodes of “The Chosen Season 3” has taken in over 14 million. That’s more than any of the plethora of awards-contenders and others we list below, most of which had wider releases.

The usual post-Thanksgiving box office slump has been worsened by a poor slate of Thanksgiving releases. Only two films have earned over 5 million this weekend, with Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” taking a 17.5 million fourth weekend while Universal’s “Violent Night” opens to 13.3 million.
“Wakanda Forever” is on its way to becoming the third film this year to cross the 400 million domestic mark, joining “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Along with a running 393 million domestic total, the film’s overseas total has risen to 339 million, bringing its global cume to 733 million.
“Violent Night,” meanwhile is the sole newcomer this weekend, with its 13.3 million opening from 3,682 theaters slightly topping projections for a 10-12 million launch. The good news: Tommy Wirkola’s holiday-themed action-thriller Violent Night scared up a solid 13.3 million from 3,682 theaters in its box debut, while holdover Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continued to be a crowd-pleaser in topping the chart with 17.6 million from 3,855 locations.
Wakanda Forever has now earned an impressive 394 million domestically to pass up fellow 2022 superhero pics The Batman (369 million) and Thor: Love and Thunder (343 million). It is also the first film since Spider-Man: No Way Home to stay No. 1 for four consecutive weekends. Overseas, the Marvel superhero sequel, directed by Ryan Coogler, added 20.2 million to its coffers for a foreign tally of 339 million and 733 million globally.
Violent Night was the only new wide studio release over the Dec. 2-4 weekend. From Universal and 87North, the genre pic follows a team of mercenaries who break into the compound of a wealthy family on Christmas Eve and take everyone hostage.

Numbers are beginning to trickle in for this post Thanksgiving weekend and as expected Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is coming in first with a fourth weekend take around 15 million. With nearly 700 million made at the worldwide box office, we can officially put Wakanda in the win column for Marvel as that puts it well over the projected break even point for the film. It will be interesting to see where the franchise goes from here.
Second place appears to be the new Christmas Classic Violent Night which pulled in decent numbers during its Thursday preview showings with around 1.1 million. Those numbers are slightly less than February’s Jackass Forever but slightly above last month’s The Menu. With mostly solid reviews (including our own), the film looks to have a weekend opening around 12 million, slightly off my 14 million prediction, but you never know, it could still get there!

Universal and 87North’s action horror pic Violent Night is off to a healthy start with 1.1M previews last night. Hopefully this movie will give the weekend box office a pulse and overperform which is typically a slow period post Thanksgiving, and even worse given the fact that the marketplace is still in rebuild.
Pic fired off previews at 5Pm at 3,000 theaters. Projections are 10M-12M for Violent Night, but it’s set to get beat by Disney/Marvel Studio’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with a 17M-25M fourth weekend win. Preview comps to Violent Night include Jackass Forever, The Menu and The Northman. The David Harbour Santa takes revenge and matters into his own hands movie had its trailer amass over 115M views worldwide.
Wakanda Forever won the week with 54.2M in its third go-round and a running total of 376.1M.
