As the final work in progress wrapped on Friday, Göteborg ‘s head of TV Drama Vision Cia Edström and head of industry and Nordic Film Market Josef Kullengård could finally relax after a mission well accomplished.
Two of their biggest challenges this year – hosting an industry showcase for 700-plus international delegates in a brand-new venue, the Clarion Hotel Draken, and lifting the Nordic industry’s moral by the crisis in the drama sector – had been successfully met. Variety drills down on how and why:
All-Time Record Attendees
As many as 2,029 accredited delegates registered for the festival and industry showcases at the 47th Göteborg Film Festival, and parallel TV and film markets, the largest in the Nordic region. “We’ve never hit this silver line,” said Kullengård. The 18th TV Drama Vision drew 729 delegates, the Nordic Film Market 556.

Director William Brent Bell (Orphan: First Kill) is back this week with brand new horror movie Lord of Misrule, a folk horror movie starring Tuppence Middleton and Ralph Ineson (The Witch, Green Knight). Magnet Releasing will release Lord of Misrule in theaters and on VOD on December 8, 2023.
Tom de Ville’s (The Quiet Ones) script has been said to echo The Wicker Man and Midsommar. Like The Wicker Man, Lord of Misrule also features original folk horror music, particularly a theme song featured over the end credits. It turns out that the folk song was co-written by Bell himself.
The filmmaker shared the story behind the folk horror tune in a recent chat with Bloody Disgusting (part one here) and also touched upon the mysterious new entity prowling the quaint town at the center of the folk horror nightmare.

Filmmaker William Brent Bell‘s latest, Lord of Misrule, bears all the familiar earmarks of folk horror. A peculiar town with Pagan roots, bonfires, masked denizens reveling in harvest rituals, and a pious Christian at the center, scrambling to make sense of it all. It’s that well-trodden but visually lush path that serves as refreshing misdirection in a new folk horror entry that attempts to keep its audience on their toes to varying degrees of success.
Tuppence Middleton stars as Rebecca Holland, a Christian preacher who’s recently moved to the quaint town of Burrow with husband Henry (Matt Stokoe) and daughter Grace (Evie Templeton). Burrow accepted her with mostly open arms, attending her sermons weekly and demonstrating patience for Rebecca’s wariness over their Fall harvest festival that’s named Grace as the “Harvest Angel.” Just as soon as Grace is revealed to be a bit of a sociopathic animal abuser,...

The spotlight's shining brightly on Olivia Cooke these days -- largely due to her quietly powerful role as Alicent Hightower in HBO's "House of the Dragon."(Of course, the viral video in which she and co-star Emma D'arcy trade cocktail preferences certainly helped to sway the public.) But for those who have been paying attention, Cooke has consistently demonstrated an eclectic taste for projects and a scene-stealing presence right from the get-go.
The Oldham-born actress, whose natural British accent isn't often used on-screen, has starred in an impressive amount of television and film projects since her feature film debut in 2012's "The Quiet Ones." It's no wonder she's caught the attention of directors like Steven Spielberg, given her prowess and range across theatre, television, live-action, and animated film.
Cooke holds her own against cinematic heavyweights like Bill Nighy and Anya Taylor-Joy. Even in the most unfortunate cinematic misfires, she delivers memorable performances.

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

The first trailer for Deep Blue Sea 3 ticks a lot of boxes. Its characters yell “shark!” and “get out of the water!” a team of marine professionals are clearly in over their heads; there’s an obligatory jump scare towards the end, and the big fish occasionally go ‘nom’. That’s all we need, so we’re officially on board for this next underwater adventure.
We acknowledge, though, that we may have lost you at ‘Deep Blue Sea 3‘. Indeed, the second film in the franchise arrived direct-to-video back in April 2018 as a ‘standalone sequel’ to Renny Harlin’s late-90s sci-fi horror, and really we can only assume that Darin Scott’s effort at a follow up did well enough on home release for Warner Bros to okay a third. On checking its impact, Deep Blue Sea 2 celebrated being “the only non-theatrical release to appear in the top...

We have a lot of love for 1999’s Deep Blue Sea, from Samuel L. Jackson’s performance to the somewhat bonkers plot. A direct-to-video sequel came out in 2018 and while it wasn’t particularly well received, a third entry in the series is now reportedly planned for Netflix.
We’ve known since last year that Deep Blue 3 is in development, and more recently that the sequel will be rated R and may be out this summer. It’s worth, then, taking a look at everything we know right now about Deep Blue Sea 3, from the plot to the cast.
First off, IMDb are listing a release date of July 28th, 2020, and as previously mentioned, the MPAA have granted the movie an R-rating. The latter certificate means that we should be getting plenty of genetically-enhanced shark gore, one of the strengths of the original 1990s film. If Deep Blue Sea 3...

To mark the release of The Limehouse Golem on 26th December, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Set on the unforgiving, squalid streets of Victorian London in 1880, our tale begins in the baroque, grandiose music hall where the capital’s most renowned performer Dan Leno (Douglas Booth – Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, The Riot Club) takes to the stage. The whimsical thespian performs a monologue, informing his dedicated audience of the ghastly fate of a young woman who had once adorned this very stage, his dear friend Elizabeth Cree (Olivia Cooke – TV’s The Secret Of Crickley Hall, The Quiet Ones, Ready Player One); for the beguiling songstress is facing up to her forthcoming death by hanging, having been accused of murdering her husband John Cree (Sam Reid – ’71, Belle). Lizzie’s death seems inevitable, until Detective Inspector John Kildare (Bill Nighy – Their Finest, The...

Hammer House Of Horror Live: The Soulless Ones is the resurrected horror brand's first stab at immersive theatre. Den of Geek headed to West London, excited to experience what promised to be a night of ghastly fun and ghouls, and keen to find out what the on earth immersive theatre is.
“Would you like a cape?” asked the usher.
“No thanks.”
“No, you have to take a cape. I just asked to be polite.”
It didn’t seem so polite to me, but he tipped me off that I should hang onto to my satchel as the bag check gets busy at the end of the night so I considered us squared away.

Sundance 2015 belonged to “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s crowd-pleasing big screen take on the popular Ya novel of the same name by Jesse Andrews. The adulation was obvious from the start, thanks to a premiere punctuated by a massive standing ovation and a late-night bidding war (with Fox Searchlight ultimately paying $12 million for the indie), all topped off nicely by the double-whammy win of the festival’s Grand Jury Prize and its Audience Award.
The tearjerking dramedy even came complete with a trio of up-and-coming talents to watch — the me, the Earl and, yes, the dying girl — including Thomas Mann, Rj Cyler and Olivia Cooke. As “dying girl” Rachel, former scream queen Cooke was tasked with being funny, sad, dramatic, creative, worldly and wise, all in one appealingly unsentimental package. Intense, unconventional, often uncomfortable portrait of Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson that transcends the typical clichés about madness and creativity. I’m “biast” (pro): love John Cusack and Paul Dano
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I was never a particular fan of the Beach Boys, so I had no idea that there was such a dramatic story at the heart of the band… and as I can attest, you do not have to be a fan to find this intense, often uncomfortable portrait of Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson utterly gripping. Though you may end up a fan by the end, as I did. *runs to iTunes to buy music*

Just last week a shortlist hit the Internet reporting the final contenders for the lead female role in Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One were Elle Fanning, Lola Kirke (Mistress America), and Olivia Cooke. And today we've got an even shorter shortlist. It has just one name on it: Olivia Cooke. Cooke was already a bit of a rising star thanks to the horror movies The Quiet Ones and Ouija, but that star started to skyrocket after her titular role in the Sundance hit (with critics, at least; audiences didn't turn out quite as much) Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. In Ready Player One, Cooke will be taking on the role of Sam / Art3mis, who is both the love interest of and competitor against the main character, a boy named Wade who has yet to be cast. The game they're...

Olivia Cooke is clearly a young woman with a very bright future. The 21-year-old British actress has only been acting for a few years, but has already stacked up a bunch of impressive credits: horrors “The Quiet Ones” and “Ouija,” a regular role on the acclaimed “Psycho” TV prequel “Bates Motel,” and most recently, one-third of the title role in Sundance hit “Me & Earl & The Dying Girl,” which she’s very impressive in. And now she’s working with the biggest popular filmmaker of our time, as The Hollywood Reporter reveal that Cooke has beaten out the likes of Elle Fanning and Lola Kirke to play a lead role in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming adaptation of Ernie Cline’s novel “Ready Player One.” Set in a pop-culture mish-mash of a virtual world, Cooke would play Sam, known in the game as Art3mis, a Canadian blogger racing the male lead to the treasure,...

If you have any inclination to see this, just rewatch the original. You will lose nothing, and you’ll have a far better time. I’m “biast” (pro): love Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt
I’m “biast” (con): big fan of the 1982 original
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I don’t understand why this movie exists. There’s no reason for it. I mean, I get the business reason why someone decided it was a good idea to cash in on a nearly 35-year-old movie that many critics (including me) and fans consider one of the greatest horror movies ever made. But no one on the supposed creative side of this “new” Poltergeist could be bothered to even pretend to have something to add, something fresh to say that wasn’t said back in 1982 about the trials of a suburban American family whose house is menaced by nasty spirits.

The Bruce Willis-fronted action thriller Wake has been in trouble for a while. Last month it came out that there was no more money to proceed, and now they.ve run into another major problem. Bruce Willis just bailed. According to Deadline, the Die Hard star has another commitment and delays in production and time constraints caused an already small window of opportunity to close. The trade also reports that the star is not the only one to abandon the sinking ship, as director John Pogue (The Quiet Ones) has joined him on the life raft. If the production wasn.t in dire straits before, it certainly is now after losing two fairly important pieces of the puzzle, like the star and the director. To call Wake a sinking ship might actually be a bit of a misnomer. It may already be resting on the bottom of the ocean.
