Dull and slow paced...
paul_haakonsen29 January 2024
When I happened to stumble upon the 2024 movie "Hellhound", I opted to sit down and watch it, as the movie had Louis Mandylor on the cast list.

Sure, I had never heard about the movie, but that hardly mattered, as it being a movie that I hadn't already seen was essentially sufficient to make me want to watch it. And since I had never heard about it, then director Joshua Dixon had every opportunity to impress and entertain me.

The storyline in "Hellhound" was pretty straightforward, though one might argue that it was actually generic. However, it wasn't really an outstanding or particularly memorable viewing experience.

The acting performances in the movie were good. I was only familiar with Louis Mandylor of the entire cast, but I will say that they had some good actors and actresses on the cast list. It was a bit difficult to take the Tar character (played by Panya Yimmumphai) serious given the tattoos.

Suitable for a single viewing perhaps, "Hellhound" is essentially a generic action crime thriller, though it felt like director Joshua Dixon was setting out for it to be a tad more. However, there wasn't enough action sequences or adrenaline-filled sequences to make it a memorable viewing experience. Instead, you are in for a lot of dialogue-driven scenes, that has a tendency of dragging on for a bit longer than necessary.

In fact "Hellhound" felt like so many other action crime thrillers, so director Joshua Dixon failed to make it an outstanding or memorable movie. Sure, it was semi-watchable, but you're not in for anything grand here.

My rating of "Hellhound" lands on a three out of ten stars.

starts off great but gets dull
talllwoood1330 January 2024
At first the movie has a great atmosphere, the soundtrack works and the opening scene truly set the tone for what to expect in this movie. However the lead actor could have been better cast instead of this Bruce Willis meets Daniel Craig like guy. At times his accent can be incoherent The second the movie goes down hill is when the fight with the big tall guy after he brings the pretty woman home.

The fights were well choreographed but the issue unless I missed quite a lot not having subtitles for the other language was what made this get boring. It's an action movie so it's not like I'm going to miss much.

Without ruining anything I didn't like the ending either. I watched this 2 days ago and already forget most of the movie.

B-movie actors starring in a B-movie trying to act seriously. That didnt end well...
imseeg24 January 2024
It's not a terrible B-movie for sure, but it is definitely one, because of the presence of these many B-movie actors, that just dont cut it.

But the biggest problem with this movie is the fact that despite their lack of charisma and talent these B-movie actors still do try to act seriously in a dramatic way, which totally fails!

Not terrible for sure, because they honestly tried to make a serious crime drama, but there simply is nothing much worse than trying to aim for the highest when one has zero talents for achieving that goal.

This movie could have been okay (ish) as a B-movie, if it had only been a straight forward shootout gangster movie with lots of fights, but that's the mistake they made, they wanted it be a serious crime drama, with LOTS of seriouis dialogue, which ended up being a big failure.

message to all midlevel producers

Warning: Spoilers
STOP TRYING TO BE JOHN WICK! John wick already exists! There will never be another john wick! U, as a movie producer, have incredible power to make incredible and thoughtful and interesting things! U ARENT TALENTED ENOUGH TO DO JOHN WICK!

This is a movie that tries hard to pull the morally complex protagonist move in a way that is way too clumsy and weak to actually have any effect beyond "i hate his nasty a*s!" but that is subjective. What isn't is that the plot is old & rudimentary, and i have a feeling everybody saw that coming (One White Man vs. Foreign gang and 1 girl...and he kills them ALL?!), even with Joshua Dixon's 9 scenes too many of faux-smart exposition and backstory dialogue when clearly it isn't very needed, as these are not characters u can actually care about. What makes the movie kind of worth watching is the fluid and kind of fun action scenes! Of which are there like four. But you know.

It's a bad movie. Bad movies break my heart because the movie-making process is so long and deliberating that it shocks me how they can still be made. The actors clearly had faith in it. I watched this with my mom and I made an account just to complain about it. We need to put shame back in the psyche of the movie directors.

A meandering mess
CraigLazlo-9069730 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Movies are story. Story is king. Story is paramount. If you don't have story. You don't have jack.

Writing story is a craft. Writing takes time. Screenplay writing is even more difficult than writing short-form or long-form prose. But it can be done. And the benefits of a patient writer who hones their script until they have a well balanced screenplay with clear characters with clear arcs, are multiple. We, the audience are the recipients of said benefits.

Hellhound has neither clear character arcs nor a proper storyline. Sure - it trundles out hackneyed old tropes and cliche after cliche; no doubt the creators were laboring under the misapprehension that cliche's are cliche's because cliches are good. In the hands of a skilled writer, cliche's CAN be very useful - tactical weapons deployed with precision to create a desired effect. Not so in this case.

There were so many rookie mistakes in this film that it makes it very painful if not frustrating to watch. A classic being bringing in a new character in the last but final scene of the film. It matters not that this character was the one who ordered the hit - that aspect was so badly communicated that we had no idea.

The protagonist was one that we didn't care about. Just because he shoots a pedophile priest in the opening scene (a character who could have been played by a really interesting actor - but was farmed out to someone who didn't know how to act and sounded like he had just learned his lines) is simply not enough to make us care about him.

He then goes on to do "one last job" - we catch him going out in the tropical jungle to meet an old firiend CHOPPING WOOD (badly) - for God knows what reason - aint nobody lighting fires and burning logs in the jungles of Thailand.... and from there it's a garbled mess of tedious exposition and excessively pointless direction - we don't need to see people getting in and out of cars and walking for miles etc - just get on with the story. - oh yes - I forgot - you dont have one.

We're in Bangkok - so of course - al the women are stereotypes - hell - everyone is a stereotype - it's women, guns, kickboxing, drinking and hunting down the baddie - who in this case is a bisexual thug.

The storyline is pointless.

The positives are few - but strong. It seems the writer is also a DOP (director of photography) and he is clearly good at this job. The establishing shots of Bangkok are great - and he clearly knows how to shoot action. That's as far as his talent goes. He should stick to that.

The fight scenes were well directed by whoever was the fight director. There were a few nifty fight scenes, but they were few and far between and certainly not enough to cut through the dire dialogue masquerading as some kind of deep philosophical theorizing. Scenes are hampered by pointless musings on God, death and mortality - to what end?

Pick a lane and stick in it. This film COULD have been a real classic Thai kickboxing or revenge film. But it wasn't.

The director knows how to handle a film set - but he doesn't really know how to direct. The score for the film seemed to have been churned out by a composer who couldn't be bothered to find any musical ID for the film. There was way too much orchestral scoring for a film that didn't require it. It was also intrusive at points - the hallmark of a great score is that you only notice it when you need to notice it.

Final thoughts - it seems like this movie was made by a bunch of people who said 'I really wanna make a movie" but they didnt have a proper script. Making a good movie is difficult - and that's probably the best thing that this movie communicated.

Good first film
ewingmusic31 January 2024
I was lucky enough to attend the premiere of this new film in Bangkok on the big screen.

I loved the look and feel of Hellhound.

We get to see a lot of Bangkok and there were some really fantastic shots - especially the rooftop fight scene.

Lead actor was great and overall the acting quality was pretty good for this level of movie in terms of budget.

I did feel that the narrative could have been a bit clearer, and perhaps the lead character could have been fleshed out a bit more. At times it seemed he disappeared from the narrative and his sidekick had more on screen time than him.

The photography was excellent and the action scenes were very well shot - some great camera tricks in some moments. We could have had more action scenes - this would be my main takeaway - I almost wanted it to have been more of a smash em up movie - and go all in with it! However - it was a good effort from all involved.

I'm not sure why it was called HellHound - perhaps that aspect could havebeen explored a bit more - I did get the connection to it through some of the dialogue, but I dont think it was explored enough.

There was humour but perhaps not enough.... Well done all involved.

For when you want to switch off your brain and watch an action flick.
wamvs26 January 2024
5 stars out of 10 for Hellhound is generous. It's just not very good. But good enough to watch to the end if you're in the mood for an action movie and don't have high expectations. Louis Mandylor stands out compared to all the other actors as he clearly has more experience carrying a movie. The dialogues are clearly written by someone that did not have the imagination and sense of realism to create something that makes the viewer believe it's real. It would have probably worked better if the actors had not been given a word by word script. The action scenes in the movie are also a 5 out of 10. There are some good bits but as many bad ones. The story isn't half bad but there is nothing new here. But after seeing one great movie after another it is sometimes just fun to watch something like this. That's where it serves it's purpose.

Not Bad
mdeyasinhasan23 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Hellhound (2024): A Descent into Bangkok's Neon Abyss Hellhound isn't just a 2024 action flick; it's a gut punch of a film that claws its way under your skin and refuses to let go. It's the neon-drenched odyssey of Max, a weary assassin yearning for redemption amidst the chaotic underbelly of Bangkok. Think "John Wick" on a bender through Khao San Road, fueled by equal parts desperation and regret. Louis Mandylor embodies Max with a raw vulnerability that's rarely seen in the action genre. His eyes flicker with exhaustion and longing, hinting at the ghosts that haunt him. When he reluctantly takes on "one last job," it's not just for the money; it's a twisted form of penance, a chance to rewrite his bloody past. But Bangkok chews up the best of intentions. A simple target turns into a web of deceit, and Max finds himself caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse with Bangkok's ruthless underworld. The action sequences are brutal and balletic, each punch and kick laced with the weight of consequence. But amidst the mayhem, director Chaiwat Khamdee weaves moments of surprising tenderness, like a scene where Max finds solace in a street food stall, the aroma of pad thai momentarily washing away the city's grime. Hellhound isn't afraid to get ugly. It delves into the moral ambiguity of Max's choices, forcing us to confront the collateral damage of his violent life. The film doesn't shy away from the physical and emotional scars he carries, both inflicted and self-inflicted. But at its core, Hellhound is a story about redemption. It's about the flicker of hope that persists even in the darkest corners of the human soul. Max's journey may be paved with blood and betrayal, but there's a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, a fragile hope that suggests even the most damned deserve a second chance. Is Hellhound perfect? No. The plot twists can be a bit convoluted, and some of the supporting characters feel underdeveloped. But these are minor quibbles in the face of the film's emotional heft. Hellhound is a raw, visceral experience that will stay with you long after the credits roll. It's a film that reminds you that even in the darkest of nights, the faintest spark of hope can illuminate the path to redemption. So, do I recommend Hellhound? Absolutely.

Hellhound lives up to it's tagline
jennxxx30 January 2024
Once you enter you can never leave. Hellhound stars one of the most underrated Action Actors in this generation Louis Mandylor Joshua Dixon Directing from the screenplay by Niccolo De La Fere., Daniel Zirilli "Intercept" "Crossing Point" is the EP. We find ourselves in the heart of Bangkok where seasoned Hitman Loreno (Louis Mandylor) is pulled back from retirement into the Deadly World he wants to leave behind. Hellhound s fight scenes are exhilarating, on point showcasing Louis Mandylor commanding what a Bold Badass Lorenzo is. Without giving away spoilers this Action movie is absolutely worth watching more than once. I had a watch party and we truly became psyched had such a tremendously good time watching Hellhound. I highly suggest watching this movie. Hellhound does not disappoint💥💥

Watched and learned

This for me, a strange watch. I remember the main actor, was in a movie with Scott Adkins. 2 good fun movies. Debt Collectors.

So, this movie, a very strange video aspect, it appears that if you look at the screen, about one quarter of the movie if missing on the left side.... But, it is what it is.

So, the story, I get it, maybe some subtitles for the Thai language would be helpful, but an enjoyable movie, action as expected.

So a bit of vengeance in this but not fully explained in the original synopsis.

Moving forward, I thought it was enjoyable, having no idea what the thai language parts meant, but did not spoil the movie at all.

As far as an action movie, all good, enjoy the watch. If you happen to see with full english subs, would be useful.

A Must-Watch Thriller
athenavasny31 January 2024
This movie is action-packed and totally up my alley! Louis Mandylor nailed it as Loreno, making his character feel so real and relatable. His acting was just natural, and it gave me some serious Scarface vibes, which is a big deal for me since it's my all-time favorite movie. The fight scenes were awesome; none of that cheesy, over-the-top stuff - it felt gritty and real, all thanks to how Louis Mandylor brought his character to life. The slow-motion edits were a cool touch, and the surprises at the end kept me on the edge of my seat. I don't get why some reviews are complaining about the pacing; it flowed perfectly with the story, in my opinion. And that ending? So good and ironic. No spoilers here, but if you're into action flicks with a solid story and killer performances, this one's a winner.
