Dry Humor

Warning: Spoilers
O my god, this was an hilarious episode. I loved the way Becky handled Beverly Rose her problem. And the way that the family crosses the lines with Becky. Also nice to see Jane Curtin to play Louise her mother. She is such a great comedian. The chemistry between her, Dan and Louise is so great on screen. Hope she will be in other episodes as well...

I love how the sister relationschip between Darlene and Becky has evolved, they are not sisters anymore but both mothers trying to raise there kids. I love the dry humor between them.

But most of all, the performance of Laurie Metcalf is the best. She is so funny, she hasn't changed one bit. The last scene I cried laughing.....

Oh, come on...

Have always enjoyed Jane Curtin, with great memories of her on SNL (especially the weekend update skits.) But as Katy Sagal's mother? Really? Unless Doris was, like, 11, when she had Louise, this is such unbelievable casting that it brought me out of the show immediately.

Also, I continue to dislike the character -- and actress -- of Beverly Rose, including the character's name. It looks like Goranson has a least toned down her screaming performances (Metcalf still needs to.). And glad to not see much of Harris in this outing.

Sticking with this show when I don't feel I have an attention span of more than 20 minutes to devote to television, so at least it's a quick fix.

The Dog Days of Christmas

Warning: Spoilers
I am starting to take back a lot of the praise I gave for The Conners early in season five because they are starting to regress right back to the mean.

They had Dan interacting with his mother in law, this included John Goodman and Jane Curtin in scenes together, which should have been great comedy and yet we got almost nothing out of it.

Then they wrapped up the Becky and Beverly Rose story with almost no real lesson or comedic payoff.

There have been some enjoyable episodes of The Conners this year, but this one will not be put into that group. This was just a mediocre episode of an aging multi-cam sitcom.

Strange casting
When it looked like it was probable, at the beginning of the episode, that we were finally going to meet Louise's mother, I wondered what actress they would get in her mid 90's to early 100's to play Louise's mother.

Unexpectedly (to me), they cast an actress who would have been 5 or 6 when Louise was born (ouch!!).

Like most people, I watch this series because of my strong affection for the original Roseanne series. It's a shame that none of the writers from the original season was available for this "reimagining."

The Conners is sometimes entertaining, but almost never funny, like the original series was.
