Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we talk to an independent film legend. Some have called him the “East Coast Roger Corman,” though that’s short-changing Larry Fessenden a bit. Though his production company Glass Eye Pix has been around since the mid-80s, Fessenden made a name for himself with the mid-90s indie horror classic Habit, in which he wrote, directed, and starred as an alcoholic New Yorker who starts dating a vampire. Or so he thinks.
Fessenden has a new movie available on VOD on April 12––Blackout––as we speak, one that connects to both Habit and his 2019 film Depraved. We talk about this with Fessenden, as well as his love for the classic Universal Monster Films, the evolving...

Franklin J. Schaffner's 1968 sci-fi classic "Planet of the Apes," written by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling, is a perfectly wicked political satire set in a distant, distant future on a distant, distant planet wherein human-like beings live as mute brutes and apes have evolved into the dominant rulers of the planet. The planet is discovered by a group of Earth astronauts who flew through some sort of time vortex while in the outer cosmos, and their leader, the stalwart Taylor (Charlton Heston), finds himself having to prove to the planet's own apes that humans are indeed capable of speech and thought.
In one of the best-known twist endings in cinema history, the film ultimately reveals that the planet of the apes was Earth all along. Taylor discovers a millennia-old Statue of Liberty on a distant beach, realizing that humans destroyed themselves in a nuclear conflagration and that apes evolved in their place.

‘Out Of Darkness’ Trailer: Bleecker Street’s Acclaimed Stone-Age Survival Thriller Opens In February
Earlier this year at Fantastic Fest, a lean-mean 86-minute stone-age horror/survival thriller called “The Origin” made its mark on the Austin-based genre film festival. Now retitled “Out Of Darkness,” the film, from Scottish writer/director Andrew Cumming (“Payback” “Beneath”) is coming out early next year.

Hollywood’s historic double strike has shut down the vast majority of productions across the country but not all of them.
On Tuesday, SAG-AFTRA approved certain productions that aren’t affiliated with any of the struck studios or streamers to keep filming. The list includes David Lowery’s Mother Mary and Rebel Wilson comedy Bride Hard.
Independent productions not affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers members can apply for waivers from SAG-AFTRA to continue production, the union stated. The waivers mostly apply to independent projects, though Biblical project The Chosen was granted one to finish filming its fourth season even though Lionsgate has distribution rights. Members can work on these shoots without being in violation of the strike order.
To be granted a waiver, a production must sign an interim agreement that “would largely be conformed to the AMPTP agreement on a going-forward basis once the membership ratifies successor agreements,...

It’s July, so you know what that means… Fantasia International Film Festival time! Kicking off our Summer of film festival coverage, Fantasia is Always packed with a vast variety of films, from action to horror, drama to comedy, the festival covers the gamut of genres and offers films that [I think] no other festival does. With that in mind, here are five of my “must-see” picks from this year’s line-up.
Blackout – Genre veteran Larry Fessenden goes back behind the camera for another genre film following the likes of Wendigo, The Last Winter and Beneath. This time around Fessenden brings us the tale of a painter (Alex Hurt) who, convinced he is a werewolf, creates chaos in a small town at each full moon. Suitable Flesh – Director Joe Lynch returns with his first feature after a 4-year absence to helm Suitable Flesh, which not only stars Scream Queen Barbara Crampton but comes from writer Dennis Paoli,...

If the 1950s was the decade in which science fiction cinema began to mature and evolve, and the 1960s was the era where it started to experiment and stretch in new directions, then the 1970s was the period when the genre more or less went batshit insane.
The movies of the era continued to touch on socially and globally relevant themes, a trend that began 20 years earlier, while also continuing the literary pedigree and even more progressive concerns of the decade prior. But they did so in ever weirder ways, taking big swings (and often steep plunges as well) as many of the films of the decade aimed high but lacked the resources to match their ambitions.
Still, even the clunkier efforts of the ‘70s had their charms, and the creative success stories touched nerves in ways that the films of the previous decades hadn’t quite achieved. But almost...

It’s clear that we need more horror games that take place underwater. Camel 101 is adding to that list with Beneath, a first-person underwater action-horror adventure with tinges of Lovecraft and Resident Evil that’s coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox One Series and PC via Steam in 2024.
Story details have yet to be fleshed out, but the basics for Beneath see you play as veteran deep-sea diver Noah Quinn, who after discovering a complex of five underwater science stations, finds something in that complex beyond imagination. Faced with no viable escape, Quinn must take it upon himself to try and stop whatever it is that’s looking to break out and escape to the surface.
If that wasn’t enough, throughout all of this, you’ll also have to contend with Quinn’s mental state. On the brink of collapse, you’ll have to avoid succumbing to madness if you ever...

Unicorn Wars: "It’s Bambi meets Apocalypse Now in this provocative and strangely beautiful horror comedy from acclaimed filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), who uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious zealotry, the tortured legacies of military fascism, and the depths of the soul.
For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war."

Yellow Veil Pictures announced today they have boarded world sales on Blackout, Larry Fessenden’s werewolf horror film that’s currently in post-production, and have released the first teaser poster. The film wrapped principal photography in the fall in New York’s Hudson Valley and will hit the festival circuit later this year.
Blackout marks the second pairing of Glass Eye Pix, the New York production shingle headed by Fessenden, and Yellow Veil Pictures, having previously collaborated successfully on world sales for Fessenden’s 2019 Depraved, which was released by IFC Midnight in the US to great acclaim.
The film follows a fine-arts painter convinced he is a werewolf wreaking havoc on a small American town every full moon. It is the latest addition to Fessenden’s own Monsterverse, along with his breakout feature, the vampire-themed Independent Spirit Award-Winning feature Habit (1995) and 2019’s Frankenstein riff, Depraved.

Larry Fessenden in Habit. Image courtesy Glass Eye Pix.In Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy (2008), Michelle Williams’ road-tripping heroine has a harrowing nighttime encounter with a derelict played by Larry Fessenden—a witty bit of casting calling back to the latter’s starring role in Reichardt’s 1994 debut, River of Grass. There, a leaner, lankily handsome Fessenden essayed an Everglades variation on Martin Sheen, except that instead of a charismatic crackshot, his character Lee is a hopeless fuckup who can’t handle his borrowed gun; in a genre full of wrong men on the run for murders they never committed, he may be the only one who failed to hit the target in the first place. It’s possible to imagine that Fessenden’s unnamed, unmoored character in Wendy and Lucy is Lee fifteen years later, still on the outside looking in and relocated to the Pacific Northwest. Even if not,...

Photo: 'Bridgerton'/Netflix Scandal is the Currency of ‘Bridgerton’ As the seemingly everlasting year of 2020 comes to its highly anticipated close, the bittersweet hope for what the next months bring is met with what joys were sacrificed as the world grappled with a devastating pandemic. The essential escape provided by the unfamiliar worlds of new television series and films was one of the first pleasures of pre-covid life that audiences quickly realized has been taken for granted as production studios shut down in response to the virus. The slim releases robbed entertainment fanatics of the getaway vital to enjoying everyday life, let alone surviving an oppressive pandemic; however, on Christmas Day, Netflix shared one of the most precious gifts in the form of ‘Bridgerton’, an original show as captivating as 2020 has felt long. Daisy Ridley is moving on from her star-making role as Rey in the recent Star Wars films, having permanently put away her lightsaber with this past December’s Sequel Trilogy closer, The Rise of Skywalker. Consequently, Ridley’s would-be first role after that wild franchise ride could show her in different form, as a psychological profiler in a dark crime drama.
Talks have commenced with studio Stx for Ridley to star in The Ice Beneath Her, an adaptation of Swedish author Camilla Grebe’s 2016 crime novel of the same name, reports Deadline. Should the deal be finalized, then Ridley would be working for the trio of directors—collectively known as Radio Silence—consisting of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella, who are coming off the hit 2019 comedic horror film, Ready or Not. They will work off an adaptation script by Caitlin Parrish, also joined by producer Andrew Lazar (American Sniper...

The world may be upside down, but the Hugo Awards are forever! The Hugos are the longest-running fan-voted awards in the genres of science fiction and fantasy, first bring presented in 1953. The awards are generally given out during the World Science Fiction Convention, which is in a different host city every year. Sadly, the 78th Worldcon, aka CoNZealand, set to take place in (you guessed it) New Zealand, will have to be virtual this year. The Hugo ceremony will therefore also take place online.
Today, CoNZealand announced the finalists for this year’s Hugos, voted on by 1,584 people, who submitted 27,033 nominations. Those who were members of last year’s Worldcon, An Irish Worldcon, and members of this year’s Worldcon, CoNZealand, were eligible to vote, however, only CoNZealand members will be able to vote on the final ballot and choose the winners. Angry, brutal, and more than a little campy, Max Pachman’s directorial debut “Beneath Us” is a thriller with a lot on its mind. Subtlety is not one of those things, but when has subtlety ever been part of a recipe for exploitation cinema?
“Beneath Us” may be brand new, but it plays like the kind of overlooked yet fascinating B-movie rediscovery that Vinegar Syndrome would dig up out of the 1970s and unleash upon a grateful grindhouse marketplace.
“Beneath” stars Rigo Sanchez (“Animal Kingdom”) and Josue Aguirre (“Veronica Mars”) as Alejandro and Memo, two undocumented workers who stand outside a lumber mill every day in Eagle Rock, Calif., looking for contracting work. Alejandro wants to save money to bring his wife and son over the border to join him. His younger brother Memo has come to America for mysterious reasons and seems to harbor a lot of mixed feelings...

Few American filmmakers epitomize the spirit of horror made beyond the clutches of Hollywood better than Larry Fessenden, who has directed and produced socially conscious scary movies for decades. Now, IndieWire has exclusively learned that Fessenden is stepping behind the camera for the first in several years to direct “Depraved” from his own script. Billed as a contemporary reimagining of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” Fessenden’s project focuses on a field surgeon who suffers from Ptsd after combat in the Middle East, and creates a living human out of body parts in his Gowanus, Brooklyn lab.
This is not the first time Fessenden has used the backdrop of a creepy laboratory to explore real-world concerns. His 1991 feature “No Telling” focused on a man experimenting on animals and the impact of the work on his personal life. Fessenden is best known for directing the 1999 New York vampire drama “Habit,” the mystical “Wendigo,...

[Dylan Minnette in Goosebumps] Starring in a horror movie is a rite of passage for young actors, but once they've made a few they tend to step away from the genre for a while lest they become typecast. You might think that would be the case for the young stars of Fede Alvarez's new horror movie, Don't Breathe. Jane Levy made a big splash in the horror world when she starred in Evil Dead. Dylan Minnette cut some great horror teeth in Let Me In. Daniel Zovatto's had leading spots in both Beneath and It Follows. It's a testament, then, to what Alvarez was planning for Don't Breathe that the trio all eagerly signed up for the movie despite already having checked some major horror movie boxes off of their filmographies. We spoke to Minette and Zovatto...

The first six episodes of AMC's Fear The Walking Dead featured a vast cast of characters, so viewers can expect to run across even more faces (of both the friend and foe variety) in the 15-episode second season, and a new addition to the show has already been announced.
Deadline reports that Daniel Zovatto (It Follows, Beneath) has signed on to play a recurring role in Fear The Walking Dead Season 2. No details about Zovatto's character have been revealed at this time.
Zovatto has stayed busy since making his impressive feature film debut in Larry Fessenden's Beneath in 2014. He later co-starred as Greg Hannigan in David Robert Mitchell's It Follows and will also appear in Fede Alvarez's A Man in the Dark, due out later this year.

Scream Factory and IFC Midnight have paired up to present an inspired disc set for The Larry Fessenden Collection, an assortment of four of the director’s most notable genre films. Migrating between a number of notable projects as a character actor (he usually appears as some peripheral, grizzled weirdo, showing up in titles by Scorsese, Neil Jordan, and Kelly Reichardt, amongst others), he’s also a noted producer, editor, screenwriter, and cinematographer. But Fessenden’s made his most striking impression with a growing body of genre oriented independent directorial efforts. Usually prizing strong characterization amidst situations of mounting dread, Fessenden seems fascinated with testing the strengths and inherent weaknesses of mankind, and it’s probably easiest to label his filmography as environmental horror.
Out of Fessenden’s own production company Glass Eye Pix, 1991’s No Telling (or the Frankenstein Complex) melds motifs of Mary Shelley’s famed mad scientist with modern animal experimentation.

Next Tuesday, David Robert Mitchell's It Follows comes out on Blu-ray from Anchor Bay Entertainment, RADiUS, and Dimension, and we caught up with composer Richard Vreeland, aka Disasterpeace, to discuss his superb score for the horror film.
I understand that writer/director David Robert Mitchell asked you to compose the music for It Follows after he played the 2012 video game Fez, which you also scored. How did he reach out to you and what were your initial thoughts about being offered to score a horror film?
Disasterpeace: David reached out by e-mail. I had a lot of thoughts! I had never scored a feature before, so I was excited about the opportunity, but also wanted to be really discerning before making such a big decision. It was tough to make a decision just based on the script, especially for something as unusual as It Follows' premise, but seeing...

It’s a second go around the alphabet of fear with The ABCs of Death 2. 2012′s first installment – an anthology of 26 stories, each representing a letter of the alphabet – was the very definition of a mixed bag, with (sadly) the bad often outweighing the good. Thankfully this time round the good outweighs the bad, although surprisingly there are some disappointing segments from directors whose work I’ve enjoyed; and whose feature work has been hailed as some of the best in the genre – not that there’s any evidence of that here – including...

"It could look like someone you know, or it could be a stranger in a crowd. Whatever helps it get close to you. It can look like anyone... but there's only one of it." The sunny summer turns sinister for 19-year-old Jay when a creeping, transformative force enters her life in It Follows, the second film from The Myth of the American Sleepover writer/director David Robert Mitchell—one that, like his debut, takes place in Detroit. Ahead of the horror film's theatrical release on March (Friday the) 13th, a new clip has been released that teases the eerie end to Jay's date.
