Exclusive: The Francis Lawrence-directed feature adaptation of the Suzanne Collins prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has added 11 actors in its final casting round.
This includes Tony Award nominee Fionnula Flanagan, who’ll play Grandma’am, young Coriolanus Snow’s (Tom Blyth) strict grandmother. Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, the 18-year-old is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a postwar Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy,...

BBC Drama Legacy Review
Foyle’s War, Spies of Warsaw, The Americans . . . the Cold War is all the rage these days with TV executives and tonight BBC2 added another Soviet era spy drama into the mix. Legacy, like the Americans, is set in the 1970s. It tells the tale of Charles Thoroughgood (Charlie Cox) a new recruit at MI6 who is tasked with “turning” a Russian buddy from his college days. Viktor Koslov (Andrew Scott) seems like an easy target until it emerges that he has plans of his own.
The premise is reasonable enough and the cast which also includes Romola Garai (The Hour) is top notch. However, despite some atmospheric filming, fairly good dialogue and a pretty good tempo, Legacy lacked a . . . je ne sais quoi. Part of the problem was obvious. While The Americans looks and feels authentic, Legacy looked like a contemporary show in which the...

The BBC’s new four-part whodunit starring David Threlfall, Indira Varma, and Russell Tovey is grim stuff…
This review contains spoilers.
Episode one of What Remains presents us with a game of Cluedo. A woman’s body is discovered in the loft of a shared address, but who killed her, and with what? Was it the maths teacher with the rope? The journalist with the candlestick? Or the lesbian with the lead piping?
We’ll find out over the course of the next three episodes thanks to David Threlfall’s drowsy old-school detective, Len Harper, a widowed tortoise in a leather jacket determined to solve the case despite it landing in his in-tray on his - yes, really - last day on the force. (At least, we hope he’s going to solve it. Since one woman had to point to her roundly pregnant...

Ordinarily, I wouldn’t “review” a TV miniseries or movie until it was completed. You should know the story before you comment on it. I know this is heresy these days but I feel you should know something about a topic before you drop an opinion bomb on it. I have no use for those who have decided they don’t like something without having bothered to experience it. That’s lazy and presumptive. I fully admit some things I have not sampled based on what I know of it, but I don’t render an verdict on it. If I hate something it’s because I tried it – like broccoli. Yuck. Broccoli.
However, I’m currently watching the BBC miniseries Broadchurch on BBC America. I’ve just seen the third episode of the eight part series and I think it’s incredible. I want to tell people about it.

The Politician’s Husband. BBC2
N Conrad
David Tennant seems to get more TV acting roles than Rupert Penry-Jones and Philip Glenister combined which is really saying something since that duo are rarely off the air. The Scotsman just finished a stint as a detective on ITV’s Broadchurch, he’s currently engaged in espionage in BBC America’s Spies of Warsaw and he has spent most of the last two weeks posing for press photos on the set of the upcoming Doctor Who special. Tonight it was BBC2′s turn to get in on the Tennant action as the one-time TimeLord put on an apron and some rather bright rubber gloves for his new role as Aiden Hoynes – politician turned house husband.
Hoynes is a modern day John Redwood – a slimey, self-important politician who foolishly thinks he can seize control of the party. Sadly, his plot fails but while...

Spies of Warsaw concludes its two-part run April 10. By John Crook There’s something almost puppy-like about the way David Tennant bounds into this Beverly Hills restaurant with a face-splitting grin. Spies of Warsaw. co. BBC4
B Van Heusen
Former Doctor Who actor David Tennant made his much anticipated return to the BBC America tonight in the pre-World War II spy drama Spies of Warsaw. This new adaptation of Alan Furst’s book was penned by Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement – the men who brought us such hits as Porridge and Auf Widersehen Pet. The duo might seem like an unlikely choice to write a straight laced spy drama given that their usual fare is best described as dramedy but in Spies of Warsaw they proved that they can write good dialogue for more serious minded performers than Ronnie Barker and Jimmy Nail.
Visually the show was similar to The Hour although the exterior scenes were obviously in Europe rather than London. David Tennant was very good as war-hero turned spy Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier even if he seemed a bit...

David Tennant has traveled far from the Tardis.
In the two-part miniseries "Spies of Warsaw" (9 p.m. Et Wednesday, BBC America), Tennant has left behind his "Doctor Who" trench coat and traveled back in time to don the colorful uniform of a French army officer circa 1937.
In "Spies," Tennant plays Col. Jean-Francois Mercier, a French intelligence officer in Warsaw who meets Anna Skarbek, a League of Nations official played by Janet Montgomery ("Made in Jersey"). They are instantly attracted to each other, but Mercier's clandestine investigations dig up disturbing information about the Third Reich's preparations for war, and all of his relationships -- personal and professional -- become fraught with danger.
Mercier "is a career soldier. He was decorated for what he did in the First World War and for what he's done since, and he brings all that with him," said Tennant, who played the lead role on "Doctor Who" for three seasons.

In the spy game, intelligence is the most precious commodity. And in the world of fictional espionage, few authors of historical suspense deliver thrills with the crisp and unsparing intelligence of Alan Furst. BBC America's Spies of Warsaw, a two-part miniseries adaptation (concluding Tuesday, April 10) of his 2008 novel, loses none of its twisty allure and passionate urgency in the translation from page to screen (9/8c). Tension comes with the territory of late-'30s Poland, a country harboring refugees and dissidents in a murky culture of political intrigue, as everyone nervously waits for the jackboot to drop as rumors spread of Nazi aggression.

Saturday Night Live cast member Nasim Pedrad has nabbed a pilot role and it's one that keeps her in the SNL family. Pedrad has joined the Lorne Michaels-produced comedy pilot created by and starring SNL writer John Mulaney (he co-created Stefon).
Production on Sullivan & Son has been suspended as series star Steve Byrne heals from an injury to his face. We wish Byrne a speedy recovery.
Considering how it continues to be one of the biggest shows on TV, it's not a surprise that HBO has already renewed Game of Thrones for a fourth season.

Dirk Gently. BBC4
Kieran Kinsella
If reports from the UK are to be believed, BBC4 may not be around for long as it is set to become the latest victim of the BBC’s budget cuts. While many fans of British TV on the Western side of the Atlantic may have never heard of this channel, BBC4 is the home of sitcoms, documentaries and dramas as diverse as Shakespeare: The King’s Man and David Tennant’s Spies of Warsaw. The aforementioned are both being released on DVD in the U.S. during April but if you’re looking for even more from BBC4 then look no further than Acorn Media’s April 2 release of Dirk Gently.

David Tennant and Billie Piper are returning to "Doctor Who" for the iconic British sci-fi series' 50th Anniversary episode airing later this year.
Speculation has been swirling about which former "Who" actors may be seen in the special, and fans should be especially pleased with this news. Tennant and Piper are among the most beloved performers in recent "Who" history.
Tennant played the Tenth Doctor from 2005-2010. Piper was Rose Tyler -- a companion to both the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and Tenth -- from 2005-2006 and made a few guest appearances after. They were both last seen in the 2010 special "The End of Time Part 2," which officially saw Tennant's Doctor regenerate into the current Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith).
Smith and current co-star Jenna-Louise Coleman will headline the anniversary episode, which will be simultaneously broadcast in 3D on Nov. 23 in the U.K. -- that's 50 years to the day after...

Tube Talk Gold is all about nostalgia, but rarely are the shows we cover in this feature actually *about* nostalgia - that feeling of looking at the past through rose-tinted specs. This week's entry is an exception - the only thing to look forward to was the past in BBC One's classic '70s sitcom Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?

Acclaimed writing duo Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais are responsible for a number of shows that could easily be granted Tube Talk Gold status - Porridge, Lovejoy and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet are among their most fondly-remembered works - but their first major UK TV offering was the warm and witty working-class sitcom The Likely Lads.
The sitcom, which ran for three series between December 1964 and July 1966, followed two young men from Newcastle upon Tyne - smart-mouthed,...
