BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the U.K. public broadcaster BBC, said on Tuesday that it has named Richard Knight director of audio, BBC Studios Productions, starting in January. Reporting to Ralph Lee, the CEO of BBC Studios Productions, he will join the company amid continued growth in podcasting.
BBC Studios said the move comes as it looks to grow its audio unit “to take advantage of new creative opportunities in the U.K. and globally.” As part of that, it confirmed on Tuesday a previously outlined plan to move selected factual, entertainment and drama audio content from the BBC’s in-house production team to BBC Studios as of April.
“The model was developed to ensure the BBC maximizes the opportunities opened up by the growing global market for podcasts, strengthening the BBC’s public service output and keeping talented people at the BBC,” it said. “It places programs...

The live-action version of “Faith” is in early development.

The two "Exorcist" prequels, "Exorcist: The Beginning" and "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist," offer something that may be unique in the whole of cinema; a strange case of one actor playing the same character in two different versions of the same film shot back-to-back. Oh, and the first version was only released after the second proved a total dog. It's a story of epic studio interference that makes the tacked-on ending William Peter Blatty was forced to shoot for "The Exorcist III" seem like a minor tweak. Morgan Creek studio head James G. Robinson was the person responsible for that change, and he one-upped himself when it came to the prequel.
After two directors parted company with the project, he hired Paul Schrader. That might seem like a shrewd choice given the subject matter of doubting priests and matters of the soul, something that Schrader has wrestled with in his...

Harry Styles‘s second solo album “Fine Line” dropped on December 13, too late to compete at the 2020 Grammys but certainly with a shot at the 2021 awards. It earned strong reviews and had the third biggest debut of the year on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Might he be setting the stage to be the first One Direction member to be awarded by the recording academy?
“Fine Line” scored 76 on MetaCritic, a step up from the 68 he got for his self-titled solo debut in 2017. Reviewers have said that he has “grown as an artist” with “much improved” songwriting and “vocal nuance.” He “has chosen to use his superpowers for good and not evil.” And his throwback to an era of classic rock may be more palatable to the older and more conservative recording academy than his boy band pop of yore.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Soundtrack,” streaming now on Netflix.
Veteran television writer and producer Joshua Safran says music is actually his “No. 1 passion.” Having grown up playing music well before he studied film and television, Safran has had a longtime love of musicals. He was able to combine the mediums in 2013 when he joined then-NBC musical drama “Smash” as showrunner, but now has taken it to another level by creating “Soundtrack” for Netflix.
“‘Smash’ taught me a lot. It taught me how to shoot a musical sequence. That show was the top of the line creative team. One thing I did not know when I started was how to ensure that you are always telling a story through song that was not already being told through the script,” Safran tells Variety.

We’ve reached the end of a very long road. Sean and Daniel’s journey is over in its entirety. Over this past year and three months of watching their story, it’s warmed and broke my heart so often. Their relationship has made everything very worthwhile. I’ve never seen a game that so accurately captures what it’s like to be a sibling and the love and sacrifices that can come with it. As Daniel asks, “How does the story of the Wolf Brothers end?”. Depending on how choices, it’s either very bittersweet or tragic but in any case, each ending is incredibly satisfying for your choices and how you’ve shaped Sean and Daniel.
Taking place seven weeks after the events of ‘Faith’, Sean and Daniel have been peacefully living in a desert commune with their mother (Karen) and a whole bunch of people who left society behind them.

It took Italian director Valentina Pedicini more than a decade to make observational documentary “Faith,” about a reclusive spiritual sect of kung fu practitioners led by a domineering man known as the Master.
Or rather. Eleven years went by between the time when Pedicini made a short doc about the sect and when she then returned to their isolated community in rural Italy and spent more than three months with the Master and his devoted acolytes who consider themselves both Shaolin monks and devout Christians.
In their community, Pedicini was granted unique access to a way of life defined by discipline, emotional abuse, and, ultimately, submission.
When she returned, after 11 years, she felt that it was almost as if she’d been researching them for all that time.
And “they saw my return as some type of mysterious sign,” she says. “The Master saw in my return a great courage...

The 32nd International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (Idfa) opened Wednesday with gender parity, inclusion, and young talent front and center.
Twenty-one year-old Canadian-Vietnamese director Carol Nguyen — whose short “No Crying at the Dinner Table” screens at the festival — kicked off the evening, reflecting Idfa’s commitment to young talent and women filmmakers. Nguyen said that she was optimistic about the position of women in film.
“Within the last few years alone, we have seen a rise of diverse representation in mainstream media,” Nguyen said. “Society and our audiences are more conscious than ever about the lack of gender and racial parity in film. Film festivals have even set gender parity goals for themselves. We are all demanding it.” Nguyen added that there is still a lot more work to be done, and that everyone must act together to achieve parity.

Director Paul Feig's "Last Christmas" is for romance junkies. Packed with frothy soppiness, it is a rehash of the clumsiest-meets-cute formula.
Set in the backdrop of Christmas in London, it tells us the story of Kate (Emilia Clarke), a 26-year-old Yugoslavian settled in the UK. She is endearing but clumsy to the core. She wants to be a professional singer, but works in a store selling Christmas decorations because that's the only job she manages to cling on to.
Despite having a family, she prefers to be homeless because her concerned, neurotic mother has literally driven her entire family away.
In this chaotic life of hers, she meets, the handsome and charming Tom Webster (Henry Golding), who is annoyingly mysterious, understanding and constantly giving her unsolicited life lessons. How she gradually falls ? hook, line and sinker ? for him, forms the crux of the narrative.

Shoring up artistic director Orwa Nyrabia’s commitment to showcasing more women’s stories and platforming more women’s voices, Idfa has announced that this year’s festival features the highest percentage of female filmmakers in the event’s 31-year history: 64% of competition titles and 47% of the total program.

It’s been a long while since a male solo artist has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And according to results from our recent poll, the one you most want for induction in 2020 is the late Warren Zevon. He narrowly defeated such rock heavyweights as George Michael, Phil Collins and Todd Rundgren in our poll.
Shockingly, no male solo artists were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the past two years. This astounding fact follows several years of voters catching up on such artists as Neil Diamond (2011), Donovan (2012), Peter Gabriel (2014), Randy Newman (2013), Lou Reed (2015), Steve Miller (2016), Cat Stevens (2014) and Bill Withers (2015).
We also recently offered very popular polls about which rock group you wanted next (won by The Doobie Brothers) and which female artist you would choose.

For his first LP since 22, A Million, Justin Vernon dials back the avant-pop extremes a bit, giving human larynxes and other acoustic instruments more room to flex amidst a landscape of synths and vocal-processing veils. You wouldn’t guess it from opening minute or so of the similarly-comma-smitten i, i — which begins with an abstract stretch of studio patter, AutoTuney sputtering and fire-extinguisher-blast beats. It feels like a doubling-down on the future-pop abstractions, before all that drops away, leaving just Vernon’s naked voice, alone and multi-tracked, on on “iMi,...

It’s been over a year since Ghost released their last album, Prequelle, and we’ve been told not to expect another one until (at least) 2020. Ghost has no time for the studio, as they’re spending the majority of 2019 on the road. So, these days, it doesn’t take much to get fans excited. Bon Iver shared two new songs, “Faith” and “Jelmore,” both of which will appear on the group’s upcoming album, i, i, out August 30th via Jagjaguwar.
The two tracks vary in approach but both hit upon that ethereal, infinite feeling that’s become a hallmark of Bon Iver’s music over the past few years. “Faith” opens with frontman Justin Vernon lacing his soft croon over a lush mix of guitars and synthesizers, but the song veers slightly off course for a moment before settling into a grand stomp as Vernon sings,...

Radiohead, Janet Jackson, and Stevie Nicks are among the new class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame made it official: Radiohead, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Def Leppard, The Cure, Roxy Music, and the Zombies are part of the 2019 inductee class.
The Cleveland-based Hall of Fame will host its induction ceremony at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on March 29th. HBO and SiriusXM will air edited versions of the ceremony at a later date.
Stevie Nicks becomes the first woman to be twice inducted into the Rock Hall. She was previously honored in 1998 as a member of Fleetwood Mac. Sally (Catherine Shepherd) is not the star of her own show — or her own life. When we meet her, she’s trudging through a job in marketing (tasked with making eggs “sexy” enough to appeal to teens) and a relationship with a fellow whose meek submissiveness is portrayed as something almost grotesque. He doesn’t realize, or chooses not to, that Sally sneaks out of their shared bed one night to go to a club and returns drunk and coated in glitter. There, she connects with Emma, an ultracharismatic woman whose lack of self-awareness is its own gift: It allows her to shamelessly grift her way through life, convincing the gullible, including Sally, to give her whatever she wants.
HBO’s co-production with the U.K.’s Sky airs after Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner’s “Camping” remake and shares DNA with the original “Camping,” another comedy of (bad) manners created by Julia Davis.

Faith's downward spiral is about to begin on Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 3 Episode 14.
The rebellious Slayer slowly but surely turned over to the dark side after her traumatic encounter. If we had to pinpoint the start, her transformation started with the murder. And once she became the enemy, things really got interesting!
But, before that happened, we experienced the terrific friendship-focused hour between Buffy and Faith. Let's find out why by rewatching "Bad Girls."
With the exception of their introduction, Buffy and Faith got along pretty well before the betrayal.
Both of the Slayers developed an appreciation for each other. Buffy acted more of the seasoned veteran while Faith enjoyed the thrill of it all. They balanced each other with their polarizing grounded and spontaneous qualities.
Before everything went to hell, they had become friends. So, it made sense that a buddy-buddy attitude developed so quickly.

Late singer George Michael is the top choice in our recent poll about which male artist most deserves induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for 2019. The former member of Wham! received 24% of the vote, followed by a tie between Phil Collins and Sting, both with 14%. Those two men are already Hall of Fame members through their bands Genesis and The Police, respectively, but not for their impressive solo careers.
Nominating ballots will be in their hands of actual Hall of Fame committee members in a few weeks. Some male artists who had been consistently snubbed have finally made the cut in recent years. That list includes Neil Diamond (2011), Donovan (2012), Peter Gabriel (2014), Randy Newman (2013), Lou Reed (2015), Steve Miller (2016), Cat Stevens (2014), and Bill Withers (2015). Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo are now developing a TV series adaptation of the the Valiant Entertainment comic book series Quantum and Woody for TBS.
The comic was co-created by writer Christopher Priest and illustrator Mark Bright, and was originally published in 1997. The comic draws inspiration from the characters played by Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes in 1992 comedy White Men Can’t Jump. The story centers around a pair of adoptive brothers who come together, after years of estrangement, by the mysterious death of their father. In the course of investigating, they are accidentally imbued with powers. The characters were later reimagined in 2013 by writer James Asmus and illustrator Tom Fowler.
With the Russo Bros. producing the series there's a chance that it could actually turn out to be a great and fun series. Deadline goes on to say that Joel McHale (Community) could be one of the stars in the series,...
