A couple of new genre movies are headed to Netflix in April, including M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and sequel Glass, but this coming month is sadly more about what’s *leaving* Netflix.
The horror films leaving Netflix in April 2024 include Day of the Dead: Bloodline, which will be leaving the streaming service on April 4. This one’s no huge loss for most fans, as the 2018 horror movie was another lackluster attempt to reanimate George Romero’s horror classic.
Deliver Us from Evil (2014) is leaving Netflix on April 11, director Scott Derrickson’s supernatural horror movie starring Eric Bana. The film was inspired by the real life experiences of retired NYPD sergeant Ralph Sarchie, particularly based on his book Beware the Night.
Both The Meg (2018) and Train to Busan (2016) are leaving Netflix on April 22, one a killer shark blockbuster and the other a critically acclaimed South Korean zombie masterpiece.

Those who follow the genre's roots are well aware of the ties Arabic lands have with the concepts of possession and exorcism genres, even if the pieces haven't been made obvious. With the fateful openings of William Friedkin's “The Exorcist” finding itself involving the unearthing of the cursed statue on Iraqi soil and Scott Derrickson's “Deliver Us from Evil” bringing itself up in the same area, the Middle East has been used as the spawning ground for eternal evil striking in the modern day, even if both films took the action back to the States. With “Three,” the first feature-length film from the first female director from the United Arab Emirates in Nayla Al Khaja, the genre heads to this fertile ground and stays there for its duration lending a distinct touch to this well-worn path.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 4 Episode 2 “Deliver Us From Evil.”] Law & Order: Organized Crime officially introduces one of Detective Elliot Stabler’s (Christopher Meloni) brothers (Dean Norris‘ Randall) in the latest episode, and all you need to look at are two moments between the pair to completely understand their dynamic: Randall’s repeated “Go to hell” and Elliot’s refusal to say he’s glad to see him. After Bernadette (Ellen Burstyn) recently thought he was his brother, Elliot calls up Randall, who greets him with, “What do you want?” There’s no small talk with the two; Elliot tells him that their mother wants to see him but likely won’t recognize him, and Randall says he has business in the city, so he’ll be there … but doesn’t tell him when. (There are no goodbyes either.) With that in-person reunion on the horizon, let’s just say we’...

Tamara Tunie is back in the Law & Order franchise this week with her guest spot on Organized Crime, reuniting her with Christopher Meloni (Detective Elliot Stabler) after 12 years. In the January 25 Organized Crime episode, “Deliver Us From Evil,” after a deadly bombing claims the life of a spiritual leader, Stabler meets with an officer who’s convinced the crime is part of a larger conspiracy. Tensions rise within the task force as Jet (Ainsley Seiger) struggles to get her team on board with Vargas’ (Tate Ellington) program. Welcome to Law & Order: Organized Crime, Randall Stabler! The two have a strained relationship due to a disagreement about their father. And after the Season 4 premiere set up Randall’s introduction, the first footage of him is revealed in the promo for Episode 2, “Deliver Us From Evil,” airing January 25. At the end of the premiere, Stabler finds his mother Bernadette (Ellen Burstyn) searching for tickets — and she pleads with him to look but thinks he’s Randall. She can’t remember where she’s going. “Don’t touch me,” she tells him. “I don’t need you. I need Randall. I need your brother. Some horror properties naturally lend themselves to incessant sequels, while others seem to will themselves into existence through sheer will, as if they’re the result of a demonic possession. William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, while over 50 years old, is still considered to be one of the scariest movies of all-time. Various Exorcist sequels and even a two-season television series have materialized over time. However, none of these projects generated the same level of skepticism that accompanied Blumhouse’s announcement that they’d be producing not just a legacy sequel to Friedkin’s original film, but an entire trilogy, directed by David Gordon Green. Green had just pulled off a similar spectacle with his Halloween legacy sequel trilogy, yet Michael Myers’ slasher antics are much more conducive to this formula than repeated returns to The Exorcist’s MacNeils.

The sequel to 2018’s Believer has left fans more than dissatisfied. It’s already an established fact that the only good thing about the film is Han Hyo-Joo’s performance, which has taken over social media for her badassery alone. The film attempts to fill the gaps like plastering over the Mona Lisa, making a terrible sequel to a well-received film. What made Believer a big hit was the impressive cast, the action-packed story that kept you on the edge of your seats, as well as the impactful ending. Believer 2 begins before that open ending, leading up to the moments there, and then completely ruins it. We suppose you can’t trust anything with Believer in the title right now. If you’re looking for some fantastic Korean thrillers to make yourself feel better after seeing this blunder, here’s the perfect list for you.

One of the hallmarks of Quantum Leap, both the original and new series, is the leaper impacting different lives across time. Rarely did Sam (Scott Bakula) or Ben (Raymond Lee) encounter the same characters across multiple leaps but that’s all about to change in a big way.
In this exclusive clip from season 2 episode 6 of the new Quantum Leap, “Secret History,” Ben runs into Hannah Carson (Eliza Taylor), a diner waitress he’d previously met in 1949, but it’s now 1955 on a completely different leap!

What do you get when you combine Pierce Brosnan, Nick Cannon, and some people called Jamie Chung, Hermione Corfield, Rockmond Dunbar, Rami Jaber, and Mike Angelo? A massive flop, apparently. In a way, it's a shame "The Misfits" bombed back in 2021. The film made a meager $1.5 million on a reported budget of $15 million, but despite the abject box office and even worse reviews, it was at least propelled by decent enough intentions.

Thanks to Netflix, every week another bygone movie flickers into our consciousness like some long-forgotten dream, lingers momentarily, then fades into the recesses of our collective memory. It's like our cultural life is flashing before our eyes before we all tumble into oblivion... Anyway, while we're on the theme of existential horror, this week we've got a scary movie for you that's winning over the Netflix crowd.
"Deliver Us from Evil" is a 2014 horror effort from director Scott Derrickson, of "The Black Phone," "Doctor Strange," and "Sinister" fame. Looking at PVOD and Netflix charts this week reveals some significant findings.
The just-debuted “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” tops all lists in its first week of release as assumed. That comes 90 days after its release. Did theaters benefit? Not really.
Netflix has a top 10 with eight studio titles, six from Universal, including #1 “Tammy” with Melissa McCarthy. But the big news here? “Fair Play,” last week’s #1 and a $20 million Sundance acquisition for the streamer, dropped off the list after only eight days.
Both suggest a result that could influence future decisions. For “Reckoning,” the hope was that delaying its initial home release 90 days would extend its theatrical run. That didn’t happen.
In the 30 days up to its PVOD release, it grossed less than $2 million in theaters. This year, only a handful of films have had a 60 days or longer window, most at close to that time.

"Where did you get those tapes?!" Shudder + Bloody Disgusting have revealed the main official trailer for V/H/S/85, the next film in this found footage anthology series. It's now the fifth one - V/H/S/99 debuted just last year (also on Shudder now). As expected, V/H/S/85 (#5) is premiering at Fantastic Fest in TX this week before streaming in October. "Get ready for a found footage compilation of disembowelment, clubbing, and dismemberment, just to name a few of the grisly deaths. It’s Reaganomics and imperial disillusionment in the way that only the V/H/S movies can do them — with the fake blood hose nozzle cranked up to the soak setting." Featuring new segments made by the horror filmmakers: Mike P. Nelson, Natasha Kermani, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Scott Derrickson, David Bruckner. The Tron-themed one looks bonkers. This whole thing looks insane! Just as expected - more VHS madness. // Continue Reading ›...

Devils is director Kim Jae-hoon’s high concept, body swapping, ultra-violent, twist-upon-twist-y feature debut and it is a fun ride, but that may not be enough for some more discerning film fans. Buckets of blood and savage violence drench the film in a thick layer of gruesome glee, yet there are enough storytelling hiccups to make this film a somewhat hesitant recommendation for genre film fans. When a sinister quartet of dark web murderers commits a series of violent slayings in order to stream snuff to their online fans, it sends a team of homicide detectives into action. Leading the charge is Jae-hwan, whose brother-in-law was among the victims. The leader of the group, Jin-hyuk...

The Ouija board, and that’s weejee board not weeja board with all due respect to Joe Bob Briggs, has been a constant source of fascination since it’s inception in 1890. Ghostly movements and other supernatural appearances went back further than that and there were crude inceptions before 1890 but that’s when the board as we know it came about. 2022 was finally the year that the Korean box office, after the pandemic, was defibrillated back to life. Producers and distributors were finally confident that the time was right for big budget, blockbuster projects, that had long been queueing up for a release, to start making their way to the theatres. After having to resort to Ott streaming and generally smaller scale films, the audience too was hungry to see high-value productions, entertainment and their favorite stars on the big screen and thronged to the theatres, lapping up these releases. So much so that 2022 saw four new films make their way into the 100 highest grossing Korean films of all tie at the domestic box-office, with Ma Dong-seok’s “The Roundup” even rolling comfortably into the top 10.
2023 too began strongly, with the long-in-production “The Point Men” starring Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin and the Sol Kyung-gu led ensemble spy thriller “Phantom” opening the year strong.

Before 2012, you’d be forgiven if you didn’t think it was possible for filmmaker Scott Derrickson to become a master of the horror genre. He’d had three directorial credits to his name up until that point: the forgettable Hellraiser sequel, Inferno, the mediocre horror-courtroom drama The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and the unfortunate The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. While surely a competent director, it’s safe to say no one was necessarily clamoring for the next Scott Derrickson feature. That all changed in October of 2012 with the release of Sinister, a genuinely disturbing low-budget horror effort that remains one of the creepiest movies within the genre over the last ten years.
After directing Deliver Us From Evil, and a little Marvel movie called Doctor Strange, Derrickson returned to the shadows with The Black Phone, based on a short story by Joe Hill and starring newcomer Mason Thames.
