Matterhorn

Warning: Spoilers
The film Matterhorn a beautiful film that has a nice time image shows how the community and then dealt with deviant behavior. A few minor issues: given the beautiful old bus where protagonist Ton Kas is playing in this film is set in the late 60s early 70s. On the billboards at the entrance of the supermarket is a euro's ad. The agency worker looking for a trip to the computer with a mouse. The living room has an old gas stove and a resume radiator. I shame of these imperfections because it is also a wonderful film, very worthwhile.

A confusing and mixed message...

Warning: Spoilers
This film from Diederik Ebbinge is about the morality of gay marriage and this only becomes an issue later in the film. However, its excellent points about gay marriage are undone in some ways because the film unintentionally brings up another moral issue that clouds everything. With a slight change to the script, it would have been an exceptional film.

Fred is a widower and a devout and religiously conservative Dutch man. At the beginning of the film, he harangues a homeless man—yelling at him for trying to scam people out of their hard-earned money. So, being a good Christian, Fred decides to help reform the man and teach him a few things about responsibility and the importance of work. However, it soon becomes apparent that there is more to this stranger than Fred first thought. Theo (and you only learn his name late in the film) is severely retarded and functions rather poorly. He seldom talks or initiates conversations and is more like a slow-witted robot—doing things Fred tells him but seeming to have little in the way of intellect. Sometimes he makes animal noises and is more interested in hanging out with farm animals than people. And, sometimes Theo puts on Fred's deceased wife's clothing. Despite this, both men come to care for each other over time. In fact, eventually Fred comes to love Theo and is convinced that God has answered his prayers for a new wife in the form of Theo. Eventually, Fred decides that the most moral thing to do is marry Theo—but naturally this will enrage his extremely conservative neighbors.

Through the course of the film, several more revelations occur. First, you learn Theo's back story—as well as the fact that he has a wife (or ex-wife—this isn't clear). She is actually supportive of the men marrying. Second, you learn why Fred was completely alone when the film began—and falling in love with Theo is extremely ironic and offers Fred a chance to grow.

I think the main idea behind Fred and Theo's romance is interesting—a very religiously conservative guy falling for another guy. But here is the major problem with this argument in the film—Theo functions like a small child. This brings up the morality of a man marrying ANYONE (male or female is irrelevant) who is this low functioning. After all, can Theo even give consent or understand what marriage is?! Oddly, if Theo was just a guy of average intelligence and Fred slowly fell for him, the film would have had a powerful argument for gay marriage. As it is, the film is just creepy when you think about the inequity of their relationship, as Fred appears to be a cultured and highly intelligent man who loves classical music (the music in the film, by the way, is terrific). This also makes you wonder why he would fall for a guy for which he has practically nothing in common. An interesting experiment but one that ultimately leaves the message of the film unanswered.

Masterpiece

I luckily was given a hint by a friend not to miss this movie and I'm very grateful for it! What can I say? A must see. This movie is a masterpiece. It's hilarious, sad, touching, weird, clever and simply beautiful. Perfectly composed and I loved the look of the movie. All actors are great. Needless to say that the soundtrack is wonderful as well. A rare, very special, very unique piece of art, that left me breathless, happy and uplifted in my seat where I stayed even 5 minutes after the credits were through. I give it 10 stars as there is nothing that I didn't like and there is nothing that I would change or would have wished to be different. Sad it can be seen so seldom on the big screen, as that's where it should be watched. I would watch it again if I had the possibility. Please don't miss it!!

what a movie - enjoyed every minute of it

Weird little beautiful story - where everything worked (was hooked from the first minute). Kind of a new experience - a slow paced movie where I didn't want to miss any minute.

Why it deserves 10 stars

The script: it's brilliant - no clue what happens next and believable when it happens. The actors: OK I only read the subtitles but the acting looked really good - and the casting was spot on The look: Weird and nice like the film.

It's really amazing how many good films are now from Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.

A small, special movie
alettahendrikx8 August 2017
This movie is just sweet. It has an eerie vibe but that makes it interesting. Faith, love, education, nurture and nature, it's all there when two men who seem to have noting similar, meet in a setting of strict religion and a narrow minded little village. Then events take a weird turn. If you can appreciate a subtle, slow, weird movie made with love this is your kind of thing.

Best Dutch movie ever!
LunaLevina16 January 2020
I rarely like Dutch movies, because the stories and acting are usualy bad. But this one... I love it! It has humor, drama and it's touching! The director and the actors seemed to have had fun with it, because it really shows! I can understand if you watch this the first time it can seem like a weird movie, but it's a masterpiece!

Boring

I happened to catch Matterhorn by accident today on the Netherlands Film Festival, and boy, what an accident it was. It would be a good film, if this was supposed to be an exercise in nothingness. This film completely left me cold. Our main protagonist is a somewhat fundamentalist Christian believer, and I don't know if the intention was to try and make him 'deep' with an expressionless face and hardly any words spoken throughout the film, but I sure was convinced nothing actually happens in the man's brain, and whatever he decides to do, seemed to be completely random fluke occurrences all-the-time. He gives shelter to what appears to be a homeless, mentally handicapped guy. We see our protagonist do other completely random fluke actions now, the reaction from the tightly knit together Christian fundamentalist church on this, and... that's about it. There's no humor, there's no tragedy, the characters are about as bland as haystacks, it isn't even realistic, but to call it absurdistic is also giving it way too much credit. This film truly is, absolutely nothing. Stay away from this one, the most unoriginal people who ever existed appear to have been working together to make their masterpiece, and have succeeded.

Slow Film Heaven

If you ever want to see a great film that is bonkers, here it is. Yes, it moves like a glacier. That's the point. You either get it, OR you don't.
