Behind every great young prince is a domineering much older sister.

Warning: Spoilers
The young prince Peter of Russia may be destined as the czar to be, but he has several obstacles in his way, mainly his older half sister, the Princess Sophia. Played with subtle cunning by Vanessa Redgrave, she's definitely a force to be reckoned with, acting as if she's the actual tsarina rather than just a regent, and in imperial Russia, the audacious royal family isn't exactly what you'd call loving.

The first of four parts, this Emmy Winning mini-series is certainly worthy of its acclaim, and the production design certainly pulls the audience's interest with its grandness. There's also the issues of religious strife in the country, dramatized by the invasion of a country church and the burning of a priest roped up into a tree.

While you see young Peter as a boy, he's onscreen for most of the time played by the handsome Jan Niklas who sets the legacy of greatness on the path of history. Lilli Palmer is also memorable as Peter's mother. Lots of detail to be covered in the formation of Peter's future, and a great start to this incredible history lesson.
