Comedian and television star Jerry Seinfeld spoke with GQ in anticipation of the release of his upcoming Netflix movie “Unfrosted,” a look at the invention of Pop-Tarts. The 69-year-old Emmy-winner and Grammy-nominee is the director, co-writer, and co-producer as well as star of the project and, surprisingly, this is the first feature film with him in the driver’s seat as the creative force, unless you count “Bee Movie.”
“They’re so dead serious!” he said about people working in film production. Then he added a little zing: “They don’t have any idea that the movie business is over. They have no idea.”
The man behind “Seinfeld” and “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” and perennial touring comic elaborated, “Film doesn’t occupy the pinnacle in the social, cultural hierarchy that it did for most of our lives. When a movie came out, if it was good, we all went to see it.

Comedian and actor Chris Rock is in final talks to direct and produce a biopic on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with Steven Spielberg serving as an executive producer through his production company Amblin Partners.
The project will be an adaptation of “King: A Life,” a critically acclaimed biography of the civil rights leader written by Jonathan Eig and published earlier this year. The book draws from recently released documents related to King. These range from personal letters to White House telephone transcripts and FBI documents related to director J. Edgar Hoover’s hostile and racist surveillance of King.
It was not immediately clear whether Rock will also star in the film. He has played the lead in the three features he’s previously directed, as well as writing them.
The last feature Rock directed was 2014’s “Top Five.” Before that, he directed 2007’s “I Think I Love My Wife” and 2003’s “Head of State.

A new bestselling Martin Luther King Jr. biography is set to get the movie treatment, and according to Deadline, polarizing comedian Chris Rock is nearly set to direct the adaptation. The actor and comic is apparently in final talks to both direct and produce a movie version of Jonathan Eig's "King: A Life," a National Book Award nominee and bestseller that hit shelves in May.
This will be the first dramatic feature from Rock, whose previous directorial efforts include the 2003 comedy "Head of State" and two rom-coms, "I Think I Love My Wife" and "Top Five." Rock starred in all three films, with the latter released in 2014, making the new feature the comic's first return to feature filmmaking in nearly a decade. This news seems pretty unexpected for the man who's best known for edgy comedy, but another name attached to the project is even more surprising: Steven Spielberg.

Chris Rock is in final negotiations to direct and produce a biopic based on the life of Martin Luther King Jr. at Universal, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
The film, which will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg, will be based on “King: A Life,” Jonathan Eig’s new biography that Universal has optioned and that The New York Times called the “definitive” bio of MLK Jr. and the first comprehensive account of his life in decades.
The project will be produced by Amblin Partners, with Kristie Macosko Krieger serving as producer, and Spielberg as EP.
“King: A Life” was a Nyt Bestseller and a National Book Award nominee. The book utilizes new FBI information from previously untapped primary sources and hundreds of interviews. Eig presents King Jr. as courageous but emotionally troubled, someone who demanded peaceful protest but also grappled with his own frailties.

Comedian Chris Rock may be at odds with Will Smith now. But there was a point he held the actor in as high regard as Denzel Washington. Because of this, he wanted them both to avoid this well-known Tyler Perry trope.

There has been a longtime Hollywood controversy regarding African-American male actors wearing dresses in films and television. Some believe doing so only hurts their image in the long run. Comic Chris Rock is one of many who’ve voiced his disapproval of dressing black actors in drag. In an interview with Vibe (via The Jasmine Brand), Rock shared how disappointed he’d be if two of Hollywood’s biggest stars followed that blueprint.

There’s a moment in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” (in theaters now), where Niels Bohr, the famous Danish physicist (played by Kenneth Branagh) who developed the model of the atom, asks a young J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), years before he would gain notoriety and infamy as the father of the atomic bomb: “Can you hear the music?” At that specific moment, the score by composer Ludwig Göransson quite literally soars – it’s beautiful and lilting but soon turns more menacing, even ominous. In that single musical moment (clocking in at less than two minutes on the official album), the entire movie – how the scientific idealism that gives way to untold horror – elegantly unfurls. And Göransson cements himself as one of Nolan’s most essential collaborators.
TheWrap spoke to Göransson about what it was like collaborating with Nolan a second time, why it’s Ok to use electronics in the...

You Season 4 has kept Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley)’s hands clean so far. Joe is not directly responsible for the murders that are occurring in London, but he sure is involved. Even if Joe stops the Eat the Rich killer, there’s probably too much blood on Joe’s hands for him to walk away clean. But, what comeuppance he might ultimately face still stumps showrunner Sera Gamble.

Will Joe Goldberg get away with murder when ‘You’ ends?
It’s not like Joe hasn’t sacrificed. He gave up his son when he faked his death in the season 3 finale.

Chris Rock's 2014 film "Top Five" is about a character named Andre Allen, but really it's about Chris Rock. Andre is an actor best known for silly comedy films, his biggest hit being a cop comedy wherein he wore a silly bear suit. Now on the road to recovery from alcoholism, the Allen character is attempting to break into more "serious" cinema by playing the real-life Haitian revolutionary Dutty Boukman. The bulk of "Top Five" is an extended, confessional interview between Andre and a journalist named Chelsea (Rosario Dawson) as they walk and talk and tell stories and anecdotes. "Top Five" is a conversational and breezy film that gently criticizes the state of modern comedy, the nature of fame, and how ridiculous life can feel after surviving a dark time of addiction.

Right now, the name Chris Rock is synonymous with one thing: The Slap at the March 27 Oscars. However, Rock’s career is a lot more varied than that one incident, though there are several clues in his work leading up to that moment.
May 20 marks the 35th anniversary of his movie debut as a parking valet in the 1987 “Beverly Hills Cop 2.”
Variety’s review described it as “noisy, numbing, unimaginative” and didn’t mention Rock. A year later, however, he got a shout-out in the Dec. 9, 1988, review of “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka,” with Variety enthusing, “Chris Rock turns a walk-on into a standout” as a customer in a rib joint.
Rock’s first big break came in 1984, when he booked a splashy standup gig in 1984 at Catch a Rising Star in New York. Eddie Murphy saw and mentored him, Rock continued to work, and soon he made his...

A little over three years ago, the partners at Jax Media took a big gamble.
The New York indie production banner had prospered through its artisanal approach to producing TV series for such multi-hyphenate stars as Samantha Bee, Amy Schumer, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, as well as its ability to execute high-gloss scripted series including “Younger” and “Search Party” on modest budgets.
Jax’s commercial success and creative sensibilities attracted the attention of Imagine Entertainment. The four core Jax partners — producers Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, John Skidmore and Brooke Posch — were nervous as they reached a deal to sell a significant stake to Imagine in early 2018. They worried whether the sale would affect the culture of doing whatever it takes to serve the vision of artists.
“We are a customer-service business,” says Hernandez, who is CEO of the company he founded in 2011.

For many people, Chris Rock might just be known for his iconic stand-up comedy routines. For others, he may be just the guy that shows up from time to time in Adam Sandler films. But in recent years, Rock has been shattering preconceived notions about his abilities and tackling some incredibly interesting work such as the lead in the new season of “Fargo” and as a producer-star of the upcoming “Saw” spinoff horror film, “Spiral.” He’s also a filmmaker in his own right, writing and directing films such as “Head of State,” “I Think I Love My Wife,” and “Top FIve.” And apparently, Rock has a couple more feature scripts he’s finished that will continue to prove his range.

This past Valentine’s Day, Hulu debuted its original series High Fidelity, a reimagining of the 1995 Nick Hornby novel and 2000 John Cusack comedy. High Fidelity follows the life of a romantically frustrated record-store owner Rob (Zoe Kravitz) who revisits a few past lovers — what she refers to as her Top Five heartbreaks — in the hopes of better understanding why she’s still single. While the Hulu series depicts a gender-flipped lead and diverse cast set in 2020 Brooklyn (compared to the book’s mid-Nineties London and flick’s early-2000s Chicago), the themes of love,...

It’s common to read about Oscar voters who anonymously reveal their selections to reporters, but Leslie Jones has gone public with her picks by posting the details on social media.
The actress and comedian took to Twitter Friday to call out the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the lack of diversity among the nominees. Jones, who was invited to join the academy in 2017, said it didn’t take long to fill out her Oscar ballot because she only voted for the black people.
“Welp I just finished voting for the Oscars. It didn’t take long cause there are no black people on it,” she tweeted. “So I voted for @CynthiaEriVo and abstained from the rest of the voting #moreblackpeopleplease.”

Film editor Anne McCabe and director Marielle Heller “both felt we needed to be incredibly respectful of the real Mister Rogers” when making “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” That courtesy extended to “the people who were involved with” Rogers’s long-running children’s series since “a lot of them were involved in the movie as well.” Watch our exclusive video interview with McCabe above.
The TriStar release is not your typical biographical drama. Instead it’s about the friendship between the beloved Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) and Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), a fictionalized version of real-life journalist Tom Junod, who profiled him in 1998 for Esquire magazine. Early on in the movie Lloyd’s wife, Andrea (Susan Kelechi Watson), begs him not to ruin her childhood by taking down her idol, and McCabe “felt that pressure” as well.

Few artists can truly stake a claim to the James Brown Honorary “Hardest Working Person in Show Business” Title, but Questlove is certainly a contender. The R&b singer Tank is known for his vocal acrobatics and statue-like physique, not for courting controversy. But last week, he was plunged into an unexpected internet shit-storm.
It all started on Lip Service, an interview show run by New York radio luminary Angela Yee that features hour-long conversations with singers and rappers about their sex lives. Tank released a new album on Friday, titled Elevation. He’s a practiced interviewee, with a sonorous voice and plenty of self-deprecating quips, so he visited Lip Service as part of his promotional run.
