A short glimpse of an amazing story
peefyn28 November 2015
There are so many story in the world that almost slip through the cracks. I'm taking this documentary at face value here, but these seems to be one of those story. By accident, a journalist discovers an amazing person with an amazing view of the world. Thankfully, this journalist understands what he has found, and helps sharing the vision of this "forest man".

Now, this is only a short piece, not a full fledged character study. It leaves many questions unanswered. Maybe because some of them we would rather not want to know the answers to, but hopefully the full story is just as amazing as the impression you get from this short.

The main thing I get out if this is: I hope he is an early example of the way much of the world is going.

An incredible story sure to inspire
idow-027868 June 2018
This documentary really is a small charmer. It's one of the shorter ones, but even in the small amount of time it has, it manages to convey one of the most moving and meaningful messages of the modern world. The environment is sustained on a delicate balance, and the thought of one person alone trying to conserve it lifts your spirits. It is an incredible true story of how one person can make a difference, even if no one notices at first, and even if the entire forces of the world are against you. The story alone is enough to inspire you. Jadav Payeng is one of the very embodiments of nobility, for he is able to carry out a single task every day for years with no intention to reap the rewards. The results his work has presented will leave you in awe. The documentary filmmaker Jitu Kalita stumbled upon this man by accident, but he made the right call to tell Jadav's story. If these two people alone can make such a difference, then it makes you wonder how much would change if the entire world did the same. The pacing is slightly slow, but it's designed that way to make you more aware of the situation and make it seem more in real time than lapsed. The documentary has this gritty feeling that gives it a more realistic feel. You would never believe that this documentary is a professional one. The clips themselves are slightly shaky, but it isn't enough to deter you from the story, and only adds to the realistic feeling. The angles the shots are taken either close-up to the face of whoever's talking, or wide enough to show an entire landscape. The audio and music paired with the video gives the entire documentary a light feeling, especially the gentle piano. Everyone who is fan for documentaries will like this, and everyone who feels like they can't make a difference will definitely consider changing their mindset. I recommend this to everyone who wants to fight for change.

A Truly Inspiring Story
ebookless8 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Forest Man is a very inspiring story. This short documentary shows Jadav Payeng's slow journey but also his consideration and care for this forest that he has been working on for 40 years. The forest is now bigger than central park that is situated in America. The title 'Forest Man' came from the former prime minister of India that gave Jadav Payeng's his special title 'The Forest Man' and his medal. The slow-paced music in this documentary conveys how long it takes to grow a forest and the immediate, caring attention that it takes to grow such a beautiful piece of nature. I would recommend you watch this film and think to yourself how lucky you really are to be surrounded by inspiring things in this world.

Growing the Earth

Warning: Spoilers
I find this film extremely motivating and helped me understand that as young people we have a responsibility to follow in his example. Jadav Payeng grew his own forest because he knew the result of his home island would not end well. The dialogue, music and editing is quite slow, but is highly affective. It conveys the same level of patience and how long it took to develop a complete forest from scratch. I hope that when you watch this film you are as inspired and as moved as I was.

Proud to be an Assamese

Proud to be an Assamese...(Same state from Assam)... Lots of respect to him and salutes... It is really unbelievable single handedly some one can shape a 500 hectare forest. The world really would be a better place if there is so many Yadav Payeng... Best wishes to him and to the team of the film.

From Little Things Big Things Grow

Warning: Spoilers
From Little Things Big Things Grow This eye opening short film forest man is a touching documentary that takes place on an island called Majali. The man behind this captivating film is a humble Indian man that goes by the name Jadav Payeng, Payeng goes through the struggles of saving his island not only to help himself but also to help others. In the spectacular short film we see the date he started the work and his experience of starting from nearly nothing but a few seeds and ending up with a gorgeous forest. This film has incredible audio. The editing of the voice over fit every scene perfectly and the music is thought out well. The use of cello was excellently played in the scenes that where telling us about the harsh truth on the environment. In the exposition, we see the lifestyle of java his house nephew etc. happy modern music is played during these scenes, no audio was used which was appropriate for this outstanding documentary I give this documentary 5 out of 5 stars. It set a light on what one person can do to change the world with a little selflessness and hard work. Everyone of all ages should see this and let the message sink in.

True Inspiring Story
ellalittle-764428 June 2018
"Forest Man" is a true, inspiring story of one man's courage and determination to create a forest. The film celebrates the natural beauty one person was able to achieve. Set in India, the film's influential message emphasizes the importance of new life and the strong bond between Jadav Payeng and nature. The film shows us a neglected, baron wasteland that has been single handily planted to create a forest larger than NY's, Central Park. The "Forest Man" fulfils its purpose by setting a variety of scenes toward the lands resent destruction. Then moving forward to discover a possible survival of his loved land, from the threat of erosion. I was emotionally touched by the peace Payeng bought to his land, giving the audience a glimpse of his personality. Journalist, Jitu Kalita, has documented Payeng's acts of bravery influencing the next generations to respect the environment around them.

A beautiful and inspiring story
sthomas-0020410 June 2018
The short movie "Forest Man" Is a beautiful and inspiring film about a determined man who single handily grew a forest in a baron wasteland. This short film shows how a single person; like Javdav Payeng, can do so much good in our world. The message in the movie is so true, we humans are destroying our planet and we need to try harder to fix it. If everyone were like Javdav Payeng I, recon the world would be a better place to live in. One thing I really liked was the use of music; it was very calming and lovely to listen too in the parts with no dialogue. I would totally recommend this amazing movie; it has a lovely story and is very informational I enjoyed watching it.

The Forest Man is intriguing
The film Forest Man is quite an intriguing film to watch. The story line is just fascinating how one man planted so many trees; you really need patience to wait for all of those trees to grow to become a forest. The film is great but I would not watch it more than once as after that it gets boring as there's not enough of action and is too slow. I respect what this man has done for nature. However, I think this film is targeted at more mature audience than teenagers. The short film does have a short of an appealing way that there is always just that one person who wants to make our world a prettier and last longing world filled with nature. The forest man is inspiring to everyone.

Saving his Home, One Tree at a Time
estreeter-0207626 June 2019
" Forest Man" is a short documentary about one man's efforts to save his home from environmental destruction. In the last 100 years Jadav Peyang's home, Mujuli island, located in the Brahmaputra River India, has lost over 60% of its land to erosion and Jadav has dedicated his life to saving it. The producers have used a range of filmic conventions to show the beauty of the island and the contrast between the wide, open area and the busy city nearby. They have used longs shots to show the vastness of Majuli island's wasteland, the use of placing people off centre, creates salience, and the idea that we are nothing compared to nature and its forces. Overall, I enjoyed this brief documentary, the dedication of Jadav to save his and his family's home humbled me, and inspired me to think more about the environment and what I can do to prevent things like this happening to us. "Forest Man" is definitely worth the 16 minutes it takes to view this documentary. I would give it 8/10 stars.

Inspiring Film
hblechynden8 June 2018
The short film Forest Man is a heartwarming film. This film shows us a man named Jadav Payeng who cares so much about the earth; he does this by planting trees for a 500-hectare forest. It is an inspiring film and should hopefully inspire other people to do the same as this man did and should make this world a better place. I probably would not watch this again because it is quite slow and not something I would usually watch. I think the target audience for this film is mostly targeted to a more mature group of people.

A Man With An Inspiring Story
rtartaglia-8110328 June 2019
The documentary "Forest Man" is an inspirational story. A photographer called Jitu Kalita accidently stumbles across a forest in the middle of a barren wasteland. He meets a man by the name Jadav Payeng who cares about the earth, nature and animals very much. Jadav Payeng had been planting trees since the 1970s when Jitu Kalita wrote about Jadav Payeng's courageous and determined story and put it in the local newspaper. Jadav Payeng soon became famous for planting a forest that is now bigger than Central Park. The documentary overall, sends a powerful message about how we need to help and respect the environment just like Jadav Payeng. Overall, I rate this short documentary 8/10 stars.

An Inspiring Story
jcybula8 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Forest Man is an inspiring story about man called, Jadav Payeng, whom is a very aware about the nature around him. Jadav Payeng is a very kind person towards nature. He finds out that the forest around him is slowly be removed by nature and by the human impact. Jadav starts to plant seeds and small plants to make a forest around him by himself. The film director put a slow calm sound to the background of the film to represent how planting forest will be a slow and calm process. I recommend this film to people around the age of 20 years or older who are interest about the nature around them. I personally did not understand the film as much because i am only young and not aware of the well being of the nature around myself.

A short glimpse of the world
sbatticci8 June 2018
This documentary is a short little beauty. Although this film is small, it has a very big meaning and is trying to put an awareness out to the word. FOREST MAN is a film that is more for the mature demographic or people who care deeply out the world. The film is long and slow which would indicate that it is trying to show how long it took Jadav Payeng to grow the forest. I think that this film is quite good and is worth a look.

Truly Inspiring
rubenpanzich8 June 2018
I think that this movie is a great demonstration of what people could do if they focus what people could do if they thought about something other than material possession. From this film, I truly believe that if everyone was like this man the whole world would be a lot cleaner and everyone would be truly happy for something other than material possession. Even if you normally do not like slow and heartfelt films you should still give it a shot.

A mans truly inspiring story

Warning: Spoilers
There are so many people that just live life without trying to make a difference, people need to make a change in the world especially when everything you love could by destroyed. This documentary should, and will change the way people think about the world. Jadav Payeng has grown so much vegetation over the past 40 years. This man can save the island by continuing his forest. This video is very touching and it has inspired me to do something big. Jadav Payeng has devoted his life to the forest and goes out every day. The music makes the video so much more believable in the way of being emotional. I highly recommend this video and I hope when he passes people will continue making it bigger.

Calm and Peaceful
jwilson-748198 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
WARNING SPOILERS.. I guess. It's a documentary, I dunno.

"Forest Man" is a documentary made in 2013 directed by William Douglas McMaster. This documentary is about a man named Jadav Payeng who planted a forrest on the island of Majuli. This was not an easy task as you would guess, it took over 40 years to get the forrest really started, not to mention he had to do this by himself, with his family making breakfast and stuff. His hard work did not go to waste though as the forrest is now nearly 1400 acres of land wide. To put this in perspective, Majuli is 352 kilometers large, so the forrest takes up most of the island, I think. Jadav was eventually found by Arup Kumar Sarma, a wildlife photographer who was exploring the island and found him fishing. Jadav at first thought he was a poacher, trying to kill tigers and other animals, and attacked him, but after Arup explained himself, he was fine with him. Arup spread his story around India and they are now very good friends. The camera work on this documentary is of course gorgeous, panning over the land and around the city. Arup not only functions as a narrator but he also stars in the film.. As himself. Jadav cannot speak English so the scenes with him speaking are accompanied by subtitles. The music in this film is very slow and calm which fits the tone of the movie. The message of the film is "If this guy can do it, so can us!" which is a very good lesson to learn especially in this day and age. Overall, This is a very nicely done documentary with a good message to boot. I rate this movie 9 stars out of 10, the first 8 for the film and the extra one for the elephant.

Warning: Spoilers
'Forest man' is an amazing story, which is truly inspiring. This Short documentary outlines Jadav Payeng's care and consideration for the conservation of the environment. Jadav Payeng used his own time to single handed plant a forest that is now bigger than central park. His story is very moving and inspiring and is very introspective. The music and slow paced filming recreates the time taken to create a forest on Maujili Island. I would recommend for you to watch this short documentary. This story is very touching and makes you question how lucky we really are to live in this world.

The real man who planted trees Warning: Spoilers
"Forest Man" is a Canadian documentary short film from 2013, so this one will have its 5th anniversary next year. It is until now the most known work by relatively young writer and director William Douglas McMaster. I watched the version the filmmaker uploaded on Youtube that only runs for 16.5 minutes and not for 23 as it says here on IMDb. Anyway, this is the story of an Indian man who planted many trees in favor of the environment on his little island. That's basically the core of it all really. Nice nature recordings, a soothing soundtrack and a couple interviews are all there is to this one here. It's a nice little movie in terms of the environment and you could categorize it as a film about everyday heroes, a subject people love referring to in films. Sadly, the way this was made is perhaps not as outstanding as the person depicted in here and the consequence is a relatively mediocre outcome overall. But thanks to the noble cause I still give it a thumbs-up while adding that it is not as good as it could have been, even if admittedly that's also quite a challenge at this runtime especially.

The Man Who Can.
jcopson-pacal28 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Have you ever thought about the mass de-forestation happening right now? One man did, and acted on it in a massive way. Set in India Majuli, Jitu Kalita resides in a small house with his family in Jorhat. One day after he had finished his work he was led into a dry wasteland, he walked for a while and noticed something in the distance. It was the work of a man named Jadav Payung, also known as 'the forest man'.

This 16-minute documentary makes use of many different filmic conventions, making for beautiful cinematic scenes. In the scene at 2:46, the director uses a clip of the sunset, overlaying some traffic audio to give an almost sad but calming feel to the scene. The film has many shots of cars and piled up cars, and overlayed narration giving an idea of how small everyone is in the world.

In conclusion, it is a short documentary but totally worth your time. I rate this a six out of ten as it is too short to convey a larger understanding of Indian lives and lifestyle, culture, home and relative time to planting plus growing. Other than that I believe there is nothing to add to this, great watch, inspiring, superb documentary.

A great short documentary.

Warning: Spoilers
Forest Man is a well-crafted documentary highlighting the true, uplifting story of the man who planted a forest by himself to save an island and its inhabitants. It is a very well told story, and had my attention immediately with the music and science behind the benefits of planting the forest. It was grounded and emotional. Of course, it was only a small glimpse of the story, but it was a great one. It ticks of the boxes for good documentary.

The Green-Wood Guardian
graphicshq26 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The short documentary 'Forest Man' is a unique and inspiring true story about a man named Jadav Payeng. Jadav single handedly plants a forest in the middle of a barren wasteland. Since 1917, the once green island of Majuli, in India, has been eroded away. Majuli lost more than half of its surface. More and more green surface was eroded away. That is until 1979.

Jadav has been planting since 1979 and his forest is now bigger than Central Park, in America.

What I liked most about the documentary was how the director portrayed the fact that people still care about the world and its inhabitants.

What I was disappointed with is the lack of subtitles. There were few subtitles, so it made it difficult to listen to what they were saying.

I give this documentary 6 out of 10 stars. Although it is not very clear to know what they are saying, it is an inspiring true story.

FOREST MAN, THE MAN WHO IS SAVING THE WORLD, ONE TREE AT A TIME
cmoloney-4087324 June 2019
This short documentary is about a man called Jadav Payeng, who planted a forest with his own two hands. Set in his very own forest it is short but informative. "Forest Man" shows that there is still hope for Majuli, India, an island that is prone to natural destruction. Directed by William Mc Master this is a video that will show the world that there are people who have helped the world, so they can too. This will please the majority with its heartfelt message and compassionate people. This is a deep documentary, that is sure to touch the heart. The editing was very efficient, while showing how poor it was I still showed how he has changed the world. With many other amazing elements this is an empowering message. The documentary in itself is very powerful and heart tugging. This portrays a global message that can be stopped, but unless more people are like Jadav Payeng, it won't.

The man with the big footprint
Jhonte-M24 June 2019
Forest Man is a short documentary based on a young caring Indian man named Jadav Payeng, who is trying to save his environment. Forest Man is set in India on a small island called Majuli which is slowly being eroded by the river of Brahmaputra. The documentary portrays India's issues with poverty and the range of wide camera angles beautifully displays the colourful countryside but also highlights the issues that are present. Forest Man is a documentary suitable for all ages and types of people. What I enjoyed most about Forest Man is how Jadav cares so much about the island of Majuli and the forest, not money or fame. I give Forest Man a rating of 5 out of 5 stars for its amazing purpose and encouraging story.
