Will definitely hold ur attention. Avoid reading too much about this film.
Fella_shibby29 March 2018
Saw this recently on a dvd which i own. The plot is about a couple who decide to make a fresh start by moving away from the city but the countryside doesnt seem to help as the wife is tormented by terrible visions. Kevin Greutert being an editor himself, he did a mighty fine job with the editing n direction department. The film moves at a decent pace n has some solid moments of tension. The suspense is maintained throughout n the ending is satisfying. The countryside setting is beautiful. There is not much gore or killings nor it is scary but the film will definitely hold your attention. Avoid reading too much about this film as it can spoil the mystery element. I dont know y some fellas tried to compare this with another film, especially in the trivia section. Plz dont read the trivia section. Also, a Bollywood film Phobia has copied the idea from this film.

Ending saves it from being a complete mess
jtindahouse19 May 2016
Occasionally you come across a thriller that has a run-of-the-mill sounding story line, accompanied by some surprisingly big actors in the lead roles. To me this is usually a sign that the movie is going to have a bit of an X-factor about it, often in the form of a twist. The three actors that caught my eye in this one were Isla Fisher, Jim Parsons and Eva Longoria. Nothing huge there, but for an almost unheard of horror/thriller they're still surprising to see. The first 90% of the film their presence wasn't making a lot of sense, then the final 10% began and I realised what had enticed them along. It's nothing mind-blowing or game changing, but it's more than enough to save the film from being a complete disaster.

I did have to wonder though whether this is what Longoria's career has come to. She was a big star not that long ago, yet it appears since 'Deperate Housewives' came to an end her stocks have dropped and she's reduced to having nothing roles in little-known films. I kept expecting her character to get more screen time or at least have some important reason for being in the story, but sadly it never came. The reveal and the twist are what make this film, there is no doubt about that. My advice would be don't give up on this film too early, it gets better.

Delivers on B Quality Horror Movie Promise
Jazzy3113328 October 2015
As I watch more and more movies, I have started to judge them based on their promise and delivery. The trailer is the promise and the movie is the delivery. The Departed marketed itself as a realistic crime drama and delivered. It was also a great movie. So it gets very high scores. American Pie promised to be a raunchy high school comedy and delivered. But it's not exactly Oscar worthy, so it gets a high score. Adventureland promised to be like superbad in its trailers, and even though I thought it was a solid indie drama, I was upset watching it because I felt like I was misled. So it gets a mixed score. It is through this scope that I write my reviews.

I read user reviews over critics reviews because they tend to be more honest and trustworthy. And I want anyone who stumbles across any of mine to feel like after reading it they know exactly what they are in for. Nothing is more annoying than reading a review, watching that movie, and feeling like you were just hoodwinked into wasting your time and money.

Visions is not a great movie that will stay with you. But it delivers on exactly what it purports to be - a B movie with some cheap thrills and scares. It also had a satisfactory ending, which is a nice bonus for these types of movies. There is a creepy storyline, the acting is not so bad or unenthusiastic that it distracts from the story and does not have too many slow moments where your interest could wander. Movies like this always have plot holes where the character would have certainly done something more logical in real life and sometimes these holes are so large they cannot be overlooked and ruin the movie - but this one did not have any major holes. Of course, the character could have been a little safer but nothing too outrageous.

I would have preferred a little more creepiness in the shots and sometimes the stakes did not feel high enough, but going in you are not really expecting a horror movie on par with the Shining so I cannot really complain too much.

My advice is this - if you want to kill a couple of hours before bed with a low budget horror movie, whose scares are more psychological than gore, Visions is a watch.

The Big Bad Vision...
Dr_Sagan30 December 2015
What kind of movie you expect when the main stars are Dr. Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory), Britta Perry (Community), Gabrielle Solis (Desperate Housewives) and the real life wife of ..Borat? Maybe the National Lampoon of Horror but certainly not ...Visions! I think the producers did that on purpose. Don't forget that many good comedians have excel playing dramatic roles...

Anyway to sum it up. This is a b-class (haunting style) horror movie with a decent plot, a twist, a couple of scares, yet mediocre execution...

Although not laughable, the performances aren't good (maybe with the exception of Jim Parsons who is playing a medical doctor while preserving exactly the looks and way of speaking of his comedic character).

The music and sound effects (a valuable tool for this particular genre) are OK, the direction could have been better but no one was expecting too much...but still is a cheap horror movie and it shows.

Overall: Decent plot with the usual twist near the end but the poor execution and the bad cast choices are evident...

Premonitions, Lack of Chemistry and Stupid Conclusion
claudio_carvalho16 November 2018
After a car crash where the baby of the other driver dies, Eveleigh Maddox (Isla Fisher) is declared non-guilty for the accident. One year later, her husband David Maddox (Anson Mount) invests all their savings in a vineyard and they move to start a new life in the countryside. When Eveleigh learns that she is pregnant, she stops taking her pills to protect her baby. Soon she has strange visions and daydreams in the house and David believes it is a side effect for not taking her medicine. Meanwhile Eveleigh befriends the also pregnant Sadie (Gillian Jacobs) at the gym and meets the connoisseur and critic of fine wines Helena (Joanna Cassidy). David convinces Eveleigh´s doctor Dr. Mathison (Jim Parsons) to prescribe her medicine again. But when she stops using the pills again, the visions return. What is the secret of the house and Eveleigh´s visions?

"Visions" is an intriguing horror film about a woman with visions. The plot has no gore and holds the attention of the viewer. However, the lack of chemistry between the protagonists Isla Fisher and Anson Mount, and the stupid conclusion destroy the promising film. My vote is five.

Can't understand the bad reviews...This is a Solid Movie
descobarledesma25 January 2016
I'm really wondering what kind of people make the reviews at IMDb? Movie scholars? The Gods of Movie Reviews? Can't anyone enjoy a movie anymore?...Visions is not an Oscar contender for sure, but it is a solid entertaining movie. My girlfriend and I enjoy it from start to end, I was not looking for some deep existential film that makes me change the way I see the world, I was just looking a movie to have a good time, and I got it.

Visions has a well-developed story, decent visual effects, good acting (Isla Fisher won't be nominated to the Oscars), and some pretty good scary scenes that makes you jump out of your seat...everything you need from a low budget horror flick. Give this movie a chance you won't be disappointed.

Don't watch this late at night
geekgirl10111 February 2018
Everyone is so quiet and soft-spoken throughout the movie, but whenever there's a jump-scare (and there's lots of them) they are so loud they make you jump out of your seat. I couldn't watch this in the end without deafening myself and waking the neighbours because I had to turn the volume up high to hear the cast speaking and then the speakers would get blasted out by bangs and screams. I like jump scares but this was just annoying.

Intriguing and satisfying! Perfectly paced.
kpentlanduk21 October 2015
After watching a few disappointing horror films the past couple of weeks this came as a pleasant surprise. The horror element is there but really this is more of a psychological thriller. Special mention goes to the orchestral music score which works well to set the mood throughout.

Quite a short movie at around 75 minutes yet probably to the films advantage. Red herrings are thrown in here and there, the plot twists and turns and keeps you guessing. Some of you may figure out what is going on but the reveal is not entirely obvious.

I was never bored, not once. Is the house haunted? Is she going mad? Are the neighbours stalking her? Could the husband be up to something? As the intrigue builds you feel very included searching for the answer. The ending satisfied. No gore required. No silly ridiculous twists that make no sense, just a satisfying conclusion to a very enjoyable film.

As a cinematic release this may not do very well. As a film to watch cuddled up on the sofa at home it is a first class thriller that dare I say Hitchcock would approved of.

in the grand old tradition of Rosemarys Baby
A_Different_Drummer25 October 2015
Reviewer Notes, humbly submitted

1. Believe it or not, it was not always fair game to do horror films where pregnant mothers are tormented for 90 full minutes. For that breakthrough in film art, we need to thank Ira Levin and Rosemarys Baby. And yes I am indeed being sarcastic

2. The most impressive thing about this film is the yeoman effort of the publicist who, given a sows ear, has managed to generate buzz to the effect that it is really a silk purse

3. Isla Fisher is the best thing about the film. Given a weak story and weaker script, she manages to hold it together against all odds. And there are a lot of odds.

4. Anson Mount should talk to his agent. Seriously. The same guy who who held HELL ON WHEELS together by sheer presence and physicality, here comes across as a simpering wimp. There is not enough money on the planet to justify taking the role and the potential damage it could do to his career.

Ugh

Unexpected
huntington4616 September 2015
Don't let the cheesy trailer fool you! It starts off as your ordinary haunted house flick but switches into a clever thriller. The twist was simple and wasn't overwhelming but definitely effective. Cinematography was okay, the sounds were great and so was the acting. Initially Even though Isla Fisher started her career in horror I didn't think she was the right actress for the role but she proved me wrong. Eva Longoria was in this too but honestly saying anyone could've taken her role. There are a few jump scares here and there and also some good old violence! It feels refreshing to watch because it wasn't another typical possession movie. The only complaint I have of this is that it was too short! Overall I enjoyed it from start to finish, it was fast paced, thrilling and straight forward. Give it a watch!

Tried to be Hitchcock, wound up as Scream 2
xhidden9930 January 2016
It tries to be mysterious, replete with Hitchcock-like old style music but mostly it ends up as a silly badly made mishmash. It's not a thriller it's not scary. It's annoying. The director relies on the most absurd jump cuts to inject 'terror' but fails miserably at that. Moreover I would like a refund from the film company since the sound editing might have broken my TV. The jump cuts are so loud and dynamic range between the whispers and muttering that make up the dialog, is so extreme that I'm pretty sure it blew one of my speakers. Yes the jump cuts are that loud and dialog is so muted you won't hear much or you will crack the paint on the walls. Anyway, the story is pretty bland, you've seen it a million times but instead of a spooky house it's a spooky vineyard and instead of weird house staff, it's menacing Mexicans that tend to the vines. The place has a past, SHE has a past...is she crazy? Is the place really haunted? What does her husband do all day? And why is Isla Fisher in every single frame in this entire movie? The grapes grow the spirits fly about, the seasons change, the music from Rear Window goes on and on. As poor Isla gets more and more pregnant perhaps she will birth Rosemary's Chardonnay? Who knows? Who cares?

Cool story and satisfying ending too!!!
toni_treherne24 October 2015
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie ... With a good cast and acting, not to mention a really cool yet pretty simple story to which I found had enough creep factor to freak me out and keep me intrigued and curious throughout the movie. The eerie vineyard location and with the couple expecting their first child after a traumatic year due to an unfortunate accident give the story great legs to start with (no pun intended) so already under stress that when certain events start to unveil its easy to attribute it to all of the above... the journey the you are taken on is great for the viewer. The ending did not disappoint, as I found it to be really good and I believe any audience will be truly satisfied, as was myself! In my opinion this thriller/horror ticks all the boxes... I would most definitely recommend watching this movie if you like this genre of movie!

A good watch, with a twist!
loueymc22 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie! For one thing, the Actors did a great job for the most part...Isla Fisher played her part very well and considering I'm used to her 'comedy' roles, it was a refreshing change to see her capabilities in a much more serious role and be able to pull it off believably. Especially as she generally plays the stereotypical ditzy type chic in most stuff I've seen her in. So, well done to her! Jim Parsons I've only seen in Big Bang Theory prior to this, so although his screen time is quite short-lived, it was also nice to see him play a serious role as well. As for the story, I myself watch a lot of movies so generally I can tell what may happen at the end, with this story, I could not see it till pretty much 10 minutes till it all came to light anyway...I spent the majority of the movie thinking the storyline was going to take us in a different direction to the one it took, so for that...kudos!! I like being surprised by movies. Don't get me wrong, this movie wasn't the best I've ever seen, there were a couple of scenes in it that irritated a little...but mostly because they were not what I would do, for e.g Isla Fisher is pregnant and seems to think she's safer riding a bicycle than driving her car...I myself am pregnant and would NEVER ride a bike as you're very unprotected and really do stand more of a chance of getting badly hurt/doing harm to the baby, than driving your car...it's just a fact...but they were obviously more trying to keep in with the storyline of her prior trauma with a car accident than with the common sense that should come with being pregnant, but it definitely deserves the 7/10 I've given it, as the things I didn't like, were just simple niggles that would come with daily realistic life! Still...would totally recommend people give it a watch :D

Great movie that'll pull you in for the long haul, but once it starts coming to an end, it's hard not to see how much was stolen and taken from the 2008 French film INSIDE, which is totally superior to this let-down

Nothing but eye candy.
Patient44421 October 2015
Wow, am I disappointed by these larger productions lately or what. I mean every time they get a few good actors together in a horror, they pretty much mess up. Visions is no exception.

Isla Fisher is one beautiful actress, always lovely to see her on screen, but her acting in this particular movie, was quite weak. All those reactions to the jump scares to come, were simply B acting right there. Her facial expressions need a lot more work, and I dunno why, because she always did her best on screen, and her best is all it takes. Here tho, it's like she didn't really try. Gillian Jacobs is another fine actress, she did better, but the ending came too fast and her role was spoiled in my opinion.

Overall, this movie has a lot of jump scares that mostly rely on a big sound difference, your speaks will just go crazy every time one will occur, you are told seconds before whenever such a thing is gonna happen, some acts have no logic, overall, I graded it a 5 cause of the actors mostly I guess. Nothing original, I've seen this plot in other movies, can't really mention them in order not to ruin it for you guys.

Visions is another production that will soon be forgotten. Once you view it, you'll understand why. Which leads me to the question: Would I recommend it? Only and only to horror fanatics. It is a slightly better add-on to one's list, but it will sink soon enough to the bottom of it.

Cheers!

Really enjoyed it!
ravenhair70222 October 2015
Watched this one last night with my wife who'd been wanting to see this one for some time. The trailer seemed scary and when I seen it, I'll admit...it whetted my appetite for a good horror flick. It has everything I like...a good front story...moving into a new house with a history...all that. I really only recognized only two actors from the cast, Jim Parsons from The Big Band Theory and of course...John De Lancie. We all remember him as the all-powerful Q on Star Trek the next generation. What's that? I'm a nerd? OF course I'm a nerd...! But I really enjoyed this movie and it was a bit confusing but it all comes together in the end. Trust me, it's a roller-coaster you'll not want to miss.

I enjoy the movie even if some parts are thriller clichés
Paulo_Clemente30 March 2016
After an accident Eveleigh is left with some mental scars. One year later she's pregnant and she joins her husband in to a vineyard and their new house. When she starts having some visions she finds hard to find someone to believe her.

That's basically the plot without revealing too much. One thing I can say about this movie, it's not a great movie, it's not a masterpiece but it's a movie that keeps you interest in the story and is nice to see. When I see a movie I like to be grateful on the end that my time or money were not lost, and in this case I can say that it was time well spend and I enjoy the movie even if some parts are thriller clichés , but on the end it's a good movie to see.

Horror in the wine country outside Los Angeles.
TxMike4 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I found this horror movie on Netflix streaming. I watched it for two reasons. The first is the wine country theme, my wife and I have visited various California and French wine areas over the years and I always enjoy seeing vineyards. The second is Jim Parsons who plays the OB GYN doctor here. Parsons grew up near us and of course is now famous as Sheldon on the TV series and I wanted to see what he would do with a non-comedy role.

The story may seem a bit complex but it isn't. A young couple pursue their dream, at least his dream, to own and operate a winery. So they find one that has been shut down for a few years and in need of TLC so they buy it. Unaware that some strange things have been reported there over the years.

The wife gets pregnant and soon starts having visions in and near their new home. But they are strange visions in that bottles of wine may break, a window shatters, a gun is seen on the floor, but when she calls her husband there are no traces of any of that.

Isla Fisher is the young wife, Eveleigh Maddox, and Anson Mount is the wine-making husband David Maddox. Gillian Jacobs is Sadie, also pregnant and a new friend. And Jim Parsons is the Ob Gyn Dr. Mathison.

Overall I did not find it to be a very good movie. It was entertaining many times but it is also the type of movie that left me with a "so what" feeling at the end.

SPOILERS: What the wife was seeing were premonitions, facilitated by the spirits of the former residents. They were warnings of what would soon happen. But when they started happening there wasn't really anything to do to counteract it, only to think "Oh, that is why I saw those things." It was all related to the new friend Sadie who wasn't really pregnant but was planning on stealing Eveleigh's baby. In a flashback we see that Eveleigh was in an accident that caused the other woman to lose her baby, now she couldn't have another, that other woman was Sadie. But in the final encounter and shoot-out Eveleigh and David prevail, but they sell the house and move.

A vintage pregnancy scare with run-of-the-mill horror.
quincytheodore22 October 2015
Visions opens up with a lethal car accident and then a rather unique set of a vineyard. There's expectation on fresh rendition of haunting here, but unfortunately it succumbs to inconsistent acting and excessive jump scares. While it does try to produce a shocking twist, the foray there is tedious and with Eva Longoria presents, it feels like Desperate Housewives with jump scares.

Isla Fisher appears to be cast simply by looking like a potential soccer mom. The first thing audience would notice is she flinches, a lot. From the phone vibration or wall banging, she would flinch as though she's in a constant startled state. This is made worse by the occasional gap in editing to the actual fright, so she just looks entirely awkward most of the time.

Her role is supposed to be a frightened mother who audience could relate to, but seeing that her expressions tend to be unnatural, it's hard to take the premise seriously. Gillian Jacobs, on the other hand, really performs. She's probably the most comfortable one here, giving nice effort to much broader range than her usual comedic role from Community series.

The movie also doesn't go far in term of horror. Almost every buildup is predictable and it all comes down to "I'm not crazy!" cliché. The female lead Evey suffers from traumatic experience and is now pregnant, a double dose for incessant shouting to defend her sanity. The other characters are mainly there to look in disbelief and concern.

Jump scares are abundant here, so prepare for more than one hour of noises equivalent to sudden chalk screeching on the board. Along with Evey's jumping reflex, it tries too hard to give produce the illusion of horror. The later twist is pretty good, yet it doesn't exemplify the cheap scare one must endure for almost the entirety of the movie.

While the end twist is decent, there's not enough refined acting to instill sympathy for the soon-to-be mother. In the end Visions' short runtime is mostly wasted on timid attempt on horror.

Another effective, well-structured offering from Blumhouse!
willmeyers9326 January 2016
"Visions" marks my second Blumhouse movie in less than a week (the first being "Curve"). Hey, we all set records right? Now then, to the subject at hand... If most entries in the haunted house genre represent family members at a reunion, "Visions" would be the eccentric relative. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but I was surprised to discover that the story avoided such damaging pitfalls as cliché overload, crappy acting, etc. I went into this expecting a ghost tale, and I got it, but it wasn't what I assumed it to be. Which, in this case, was quite welcome, after being routinely bored with what the genre usually offers. The pacing is decent, with some understandably slower moments to elevate tension. The general vibe I get from the reviews here, regarding the "jump scares", is that they're mediocre at best. All I know is, my heart skipped a few beats and I was momentarily frightened in a number of places. But, that may not be the case for everyone! The cast was fun to watch, including Jim Parsons in a dramatic deviation from his well- known mega-nerd on the Big Bang Theory. Isla Fisher, after taking the back seat in Now You See Me and The Great Gatsby proves here that she can be a leading lady. Not a strong one (I felt that some of her delivery was on the weaker side), but definitely a character you empathize with. Then there's Anson Mount of "Hell on Wheels" fame providing some gruff macho support in the form of Fisher's husband. You've also got Gillian Jacobs and Eva Longoria to fill out the cast, so overall the casting director performed their job well. In terms of movie twists, the one to conclude "Visions" doesn't rank anywhere near "Usual Suspects" or "Primal Fear", but it still made my jaw drop. Dare I say, it even gave me a brief chill. What's important to note is that it is also a plausible twist, and everything we see up to that point makes perfect sense by the time the credits roll. In all honesty, this would probably fizzle out at the box office and receive a collective "meh" from critics, but as Netflix fodder, it's definitely a gem.

An interesting take, but nothing completely new...
jessiewake24 June 2017
After a pregnant woman moves in her new house with her loving husband, she starts seeing strange visions.

The movie starts up interesting, the character themselves are pretty well done. Though I was more interested by some side characters then our main protagonist. That's where the movie loses me a bit, though the actors do a great job, they don't have a lot to work with, some simple things are thrown in there to squish everything up, so we can care for these people. But at the end it just doesn't work very well. The movie tries to do something clever, though I didn't see the ending coming, it might be just because it was a little boring and hard to pay attention to. I can see a number of times the director tried to build atmosphere and tension, but it quickly falls apart by the numerous jump-scares it has littered about. There was so many times in the movie where I jumped just because of a loud noise and that is a problem. Some things are not explained in the ending which I can't get into without spoiling so I won't talk about it, but beside that we also have a very, very uninteresting ending of all. I wasn't afraid for the woman or her husband, I was more interested about the past it sets up with this house but never delivers. Sound: Nothing special for a horror movie Directing: It has some good shots, though it doesn't play with our mind quite as well as I hoped it would because of these visions. Story: The story is lackluster, had potential, but ultimately failed.

Overall this is an average movie at best: 5/10

Clever story
phd_travel21 September 2015
This horror movie is set in a winery area and the atmosphere is suitably eerie. A couple move into a winery. The wife had a car accident the year before and now is pregnant. She starts seeing visions. At first it seems like there is some Rosemary's Baby thing going on but that isn't it. Also it seems there are a lot of red herrings and cheap shock tactics but be patient it all comes together in a logical way with a very clever twist that makes you think about horror movies in a different way. Just when you think you couldn't be surprised any more. I won't say what it is.

When you have A list actors doing supporting roles you know it can't be a bad movie. Jim Parsons plays a doctor. He can do more dramatic roles he is quite good with just a change of expression. Eva Longoria looks pretty - wish she acted more often. Isla Fisher mostly know for comic roles is quite good as the scared pregnant wife who thinks she is losing her mind.

It's rewarding when horror movies make "horror sense" - you feel watching it was worth your time.

Overall A Decent Film
blood-lust66630 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was pleasantly surprised by this film due to its unique take on hauntings. I found it very interesting that an event in the future could haunt someone in the present (and even those in the past). I had never seen that done before in any other film, so I was quite impressed with this new spin the director/writers put on a would-be conventional ghost story. That being said, I was somewhat disappointed with the ending. For an event to be so traumatic it transcends time and space, and thus haunts all the residents who lived there-even the original owners-I did expect a much more gruesome ending then what we received. Several people were killed and, understandably, that is traumatic in its own right but it didn't seem explosive enough considering all the build up that came before it. Had the baby been extracted and and/or Evie and David had died, that would have made much more sense with the overall story line, especially considering the psychic from many years prior to the event saw their faces rather than the faces of the people who actually died. So, I was let down a bit by the ending but overall this is a decent film.

Standard mediocre horror
rynrox3 June 2020
Acting wasn't great, all of the interactions between characters seemed disingenuous. The story isn't all that original. The majority of scary visions relied on loud sounds instead of scary sights. Still good for a background movie while you're doing something else.
