Too much emphasis on if it is a cult or not
springmaiden-8522329 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Just because you find a group of people living off the land and seemingly without rules doesn't make them a cult. It reminds me of how the government calls citizens or foreign countries terrori$t$ but when they perpetuate an act of violence on their own people that word doesn't apply. The word cult gets thrown around constantly and it was clear to me that Tree and his gf along with some others just wanted to live in their own peace. There were toxic social attitudes that existed in the Garden with how Tyler "Oak" was treated, as they absolutely did judge him and were unkind. He was the realest and most normal person on there. Why was no one emphasizing growing vegetables and fruits? No fishing? Tyler and his wife are bad new because it was clear to me Tyler believes violence makes a man (it doesn't), and his wife emasculates him by making him feel he is not enough so he must bring in another woman to their marriage bed.

Hey guys, it's HBO. Stop with the bleeping already
mendylou64-16-13322614 December 2023
Bleeping out the curse words made it unwatchable. These are people who swear ALOT. They could have put a warning at the beginning and let it go.

I love a good documentary. I love living off the grid as much as possible. I hoped maybe I could get some good project ideas for my land. From the previews I could tell these were the kind of people I have known all my life, good and bad. I got 1/2 way through the first episode and gave up. Maybe it's a cult? Maybe it's just a groovy bunch of people. I'll never know because y'all think we can't handle a few curse words.

If you're too fragile to hear the naughty words this is the documentary for you.

Loved what the series could be, missed opportunity imo
IsBritneyBitch7 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So first of all started watching the show bc of the fact they are an intentional community. I actually loved how the people came together and started building something.

It was a missed opportunity for the producers to not focus on this 'how to build' and the more interesting homesteading of it all. Instead they focused on drama and put ominous music behind normal footage. If they made it more on about 'how to build a community' it would reel in more people.

I wanna see Julia explain us how to build stuff. I wanna see Jag teach us about medicinal herbs. I wish it focused more on the people and whta they know and contribute. The fact they focused it as if being a cult just took away everything interesting. Like veryone can leave, everyone gets a vote, nobody is forced to participate, what is 'cult' about this?

Sidenote: Jessica saying the anarchist, egalitarian Garden is cult, but then being OK with Tyler's idea to become the dictator/leader was the most hilarious part.

Not a Cult, Not a Docuseries, Reality TV
Desertdwellr10 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a reality tv show. It's really irresponsible for it to be presented as a docuseries or documentary. Think Survivor with lesser quality production.

If you're thinking you'll get a documentary on a controversial cult or a series that dives deeply into the functions and operations of an intentional living commune, you'll be disappointed like me.

If you like the manufactured drama of reality tv, this might be for you.

Annoying, inane, foolish characters are the central cast. There's very little time spent on what truly goes into living off the grid and in a commune. I had to give up after the 3rd episode. One of the "new characters" introduced was so obviously ridiculous it was impossible to take this seriously any longer.

Duped by HBO, really just a discovery channel reality tv show
jmjvffrc13 December 2023
I took the bait... I thought this was a documentary about a cult. But as soon as those credits rolled with a fake fight happening in the background like all those discovery channel garbage reality show I was quickly reminded that discovery is part of hbo max now. It is terrible of HBO to clearly come after the people who like cult documentaries and use false advertising like this. This merger is going to be the death of hbo, they are catering to the extremes on both sides and are forgetting about us normies. Well that was a long rant about hbo, tk get back to the show...well it sucks, it is so obviously fake, they bring in actors who have no skill set to be outdoors. It's just bunch of paid actors who have fake fights like every cheaply produced discovery channel trash.

Is it a cult?!
rstaub-3408729 November 2023
This show is a ride from the very first episode. While many "cult" docs as of late have been focused on the manipulation of the members by some evil leader, this one really gives you insight to their everyday lives and the natural struggles that come living in an ungoverned society.

If it is a cult... sign me up!!! There are clearly a lot of pros and cons to living off the land and even more barriers when it comes to living with each other peacefully but the community and bond that is formed as a result looks so fulfilling.

There's some level of leadership, sure. But this isn't how I think of cults. There's no one major leader at the top trying to profit or be a master manipulator. Patrick owns the land and has some level of authority but these people crying that it's some horrible cult need to go study/watch the NXIVM cult and some of the other crazy ones where a ton of crimes and financial/emotional manipulation is taking place.

I Wish This Was a Cult, That Might Actually Be Worth Watching
sendtokris-004565 December 2023
I thought that I was watching a docuseries, what I got was a bunch of petty drama typical of a reality show. It's like The Real World, only off the grid. These people are insufferably disagreeable and sanctimonious. They're basically the kids that hated taking baths as children, only a few decades later. Now they live in the woods and mock the rest of us as "conformists. " I get the impression that the whole cult question is nothing more than marketing to hook people into check out this series. That Carrot Top looking mofo with "Tree Forrester" (so much cringe) as a sobriquet is also the last person that I would nominate as a spokesperson for any organization.

Definitely not a cult
b4blue19 November 2023
This is an amazing example of group and individual dynamics in a commune. There isn't a clear leader of the group, just some individuals that are perhaps more knowledgeable and assertive. Then there are people that need to follow someone, but also people that can't work well with anyone. It's basically what you would get in any kind of group, no matter what the number of individuals is. It seems chaotic at first, but over time, a hierarchy is established. It's natural. It's clear that they are paranoid because of their bad experience with previous outsiders, yet newcomers attribute that to secrets that have yet to be revealed. Anyone who ever tried to make a group of very different individuals work together, in this kind of setting, will understand that this is very difficult and most often doesn't work out. Other people might even see the patterns that aren't there and compare it with what they think they learned from documentaries about cults.

The reality show "Survivor" is a great example. What does every person say after a few days? That they watched every season but they never understood how hard it is going to be, until they spent the first night out there. Without the experience, you will never truly understand and connect with people on screen.

not reality TV, this is fabricated
tomohern1 December 2023
The editors of the show should be ashamed. This is in no way a documentation of what happened. It turns out half the drama contained in the show was completely fabricated by the editing team The cast (and I used the term cast because the people in the show were in no way represented accurately so this is more like acting than anything else) have come out and pointed out how horribly this was done in other to make them look like nut jobs. If you want to watch a silly drama filled show, this might be for you. But if you actually want to learn about intentional communities, there are far better resources on the internet than this show.

Fake & Annoying
erinhoscheid7 December 2023
100% fake. They don't even try to hide it. Its just taking actors that have been given strong personalities and pre-planned conflicts out to hang out at a commune. Shame on the producers for calling this a "doc". It's BS propaganda for the commune/cult/whatever and just gives them a payday. Its stupid to pretend its real. This would have been fine as a reality show, but boy oh boy did they pick some annoying characters. You've got the overly spiritual annoying hippie, the fat mid life crisis dumb dad, and the final straw for me was this dumb as rocks female character who just talks about clothes and wants to bring a corded electric heater. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME (unless of course you really like complete trash TV).

Pseudo hippie trust fun babies get more money by staring in sensationalized "docuseries."
jessicayurkow14 December 2023
Wtf did I just watch? Why can't I stop watching? Oh bc it's junk food and junk food is addicting. I don't, for a second, believe a single solitary event or person in this FICTIONALIZED series is legit. This goes double for the girl with the lashes. Hon, we ALL know you took the first callback that came your way to get on TV and try to quit your day job to be a full time influencer.

This series makes me disgusted to be a millennial and have to be grouped in with these complete and utter morons. If you hate people who coin themselves "Tree," or - wait for it - "VIBE," this will be utter rage fuel. Idk what made me laugh harder - the girl who uses moon water to try and cure someone's severe back injury, or the Tree guy throwing a child-level temper tantrum over BeING aBLE tO PaRtY. This isn't a cult. This a group of privileged morons who think they are CHANGInG thE WoRLd by not taking a shower.

And don't even get me started on Narayah.

Really forced the "is it a cult?" angle too much.
KurosawaAkeeera4 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I felt like this show misrepresents itself in the title. I feel that there are very few moments where anything cultish happens at all, and most of those saying it's a cult seem to miss the point of the community.

Can the community be toxic? Sure, doesn't mean it's a cult. Are some of the people a little unhinged? Sure, doesn't make it a cult.

Do newcomers seem to come in and immediately start wanting to make drastic decisions? Yes. Does that sometimes need to be checked? Of course, still not anything close to a cult.

This would have been better if they just billed it as a doc about intentional community, because that's what it was. The "cult or not" aspect of the show was shoehorned in to try and grab true crime fans. I enjoyed the show very much, but it's very clear anyone trying to say it's a cult is reaching.

Reality TV, not a docuseries
jbjfan38-219-20470617 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Super misleading title and description of the show. The first episode was documentary style but they bait and switched. I couldn't even finish the show. I don't really watch reality TV and I tried to give this a chance once I realized that was more of what it was.

Other than maybe first Tyler, these people weren't actually trying to join the group. Tyler #2 was in NO shape to even attempt to "live off the grid" and just wanted to learn the "prepper" lifestyle (I will say his one daughter laughing at him while he was going on about his paranoia made me laugh though).

I watched the first 4 episodes while traveling and I think that's the only reason I even got to 4, I needed something to do and they were already downloaded. I guess if you like ridiculous reality TV this might be up your alley, but if you actually want a documentary or a show discussing real cults, this definitely isn't it.

interesting show, not a cult
amblilful4 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
These are my, random person on the internet, opinions. I'm here for the drama. This show definitely introduced drama. I know the premise is "commune or cult?" but it's really not a cult. When theres a cult there are a few things that come to mind that don't appear in the Garden. For one, yeah there is a kind of de facto "leader" but no one is expected to revere them. They arent claiming to be above anyone. And no one is asking for money either. And there's no forced recruitment. All of those things are crucial to how a cult operates, and it's nonexistent in the garden. No one is forced to do anything.

That said, it's not a very efficient commune either. There actually does need to be a leader to handle tough decisions. I know it sounds "culty" but what do you think the president is? Someone needs to be in charge, it could even be an agreed upon group of leaders. But they really hate that idea for some reason. They have an interesting idea with the council, but that's ineffective as well, because one person can shoot the whole idea down. There are a lot of conflicting ideas that kind of ruin the progress of what the garden could be. Too many big egos in one place doesn't make it a cult, but it does make it an ineffective commune. Just my two cents!

Not as advertised
lharper136-264-51948911 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The title is "Commune or Cult" but it's really not about people wanting to join after 10 days, it's about people wanting to learn if they can live "off the grid" for 10 days. (As off the grid as you can be with cell phones.)

Even if they could stay they don't really want to, they just want to live outside for 10 days. It's got The Simple Life vibes, but it's more scripted than that.

Other people say they focus too much on if it's a cult but I think it's just a common question the producers ask, no one is focusing them on making them say "cult".

Oh! And Tree? He's the common thread in all problems. He's a child that gets what he wants. Because that's what the script says.

Shame on the Producers
dolphy_hawkins30 December 2023
How do the makers of this show sleep at night? This series could have been something interesting, insightful and useful. It could have portrayed an alternative way of living, alternative ideas. The producers had the trust and the complete access to this community and they betrayed their trust. The intrigue and planted protagonists (clearly recruited and manipulated) claiming it was a cult, sewing mistrust, generating drama, were the sole generators of any cultlike behaviour. Disgusting film making which gives the industry a bad name.

This was a totally missed opportunity, it was corrupt and unethical. When someone asks not to be filmed turn the camera off. Do better next time.

Not a doc series, just a reality show
lu_lou_belle21 December 2023
Problem with anarcho communal living is well, sooner or later there's lord of the flies drama unless everyone involved is very clear about what collective goals are and ethics are respected. 20 minutes in and this looks like big brother in the woods. And 'Man I know the CIA is looking at us' just demonstrates the level of thoughtfulness. Problem with every person you're gonna see here is the level of self importance and narcissism. Some of that will fade with age but not particularly helpful in a collective.

As for the commune v cult question, click bait irrelevance. Go do your thing. You should be far too busy growing animal tending and maintaining to be social media influence pedaling.

As for the show, i gave it 20 minutes before all the reality show structures fully came together. Not a documentary; nothing of note to learn here. You can't even see inside their "greenhouse" which has very little thermal or lighting functionality. So maybe it's their humboldt skunkweed bunker and arsenal. Ho hum.

Drama Filled
larryluv-9482226 November 2023
This show is full of drama. From the 1st episode to the last showcased tension between the people that was there. I guess when you put a bunch of people together in front of television cameras there is no telling what to expect. The idea of trying to figure out if it is a commune or cult is hard to say because the show didn't film much of great experiences people share in a community. Instead they brought actors in to determine who can or cannot stay. Every actor that was brought in had a different background and it was interesting to see how they were able to fit in with the group. Overall i think that the show is very entertaining and I've enjoyed watching it.

Want to watch middling actors harass a drum circle? Discovery+Max executives have a reality contest for you!!!
firemote-793-2631389 January 2024
Coming off actual documentaries on harmful cults like Love Has Won, , this one was framed from the start as something shocking, teasing at violence and coercive control.

Instead we get a semi-scripted reality show where it appears that actors responding to the casting call were structured around whatever roles as "the Viking", "the outcast who hates hippie nonsense", "the out of water influencer", "the citizen detective investigator" etc etc, offered talking head moments and given childhood camp-like "survival training".

The production company doesn't appear make documentaries but reality shows about sexy Amish people or whatever Discovery exploitation du jour, replacing actual HBO documentary content with this will be the future of your subscription budget.

Back to the series!

There's a plot of land, a general misunderstanding of collective decisions, a disdain for people who live as they want to, and a wacky cast with roles that primarily involve disgust for the way some people choose to live.

The legacy of this show for me is how lazy it is in reinforcing xenophobia and small-mindedness through the usual reality TV lens. Was it a mistake for the commune to make any deal with Discovery? I hope it paid for some infrastructure so they can live freer.

But jeezy, I don't know how it'll be seen by people (it'll just be seen since it cost very little for Discovery) but I did look up the general response on Reddit and I had a hard time finding anyone who thought it didn't do the commune a disservice with this sloppy, boring fiction, people mugging for the camera and causing distress to their hosts who for any flaws of prepper skill didn't ask to be harassed and intimidated.

I don't usually leave reviews! I think this is really what the old HBO sub budget will become, slickly filmed (I'll give field sound / video workers props, BEGRUDGINGLY) but Discovery will sell us these trash true crime "series" with pretense of content and end up with cheap "freak show" exploitation and ironically perpetuating small minded paranoia a lot more than the actual outcasts that.

So Tyler is Obviously A Problem
thalassafischer6 December 2023
From episode one the bias of this show is evident in the embodiment of Tyler "potential Garden member" who is a complete wack job, ex-military, pro-violence, toxic masculinity, proud of his anger problem.

Some weirdo like that descends on a group of leftist anarchists who are just trying to compost their poop to grow vegetables and raise chickens, and of course something is going to go wrong,

Tyler is what is wrong.

I live in a part of the Pacific Northwest where we have semi-intentional communities that are quasi "off grid" so I am not completely unfamiliar with the sort of people who embrace this lifestyle. It is REALLY HARD WORK and requires a mindset where you can thrive in a smaller community of people.

You can't throw someone like Tyler in the mix. Anything else that is meant to be "proven" as "cult-like" by this film crew is totally screwed up by the presence of crazy conservative man.

Commune or cult.... or a new spin on a reality show?
kewlcow334-530-36235528 March 2024
If this were marketed honestly, I would have a better rating. It's supposedly a documentary that is meant to explore whether a particular group is a cult or not, when it's really just a different take on survivor. Each contestant has 10 days to see if they get voted in to live on the established commune or not. Of course if you have an isolated group of people, you're going to have cult like lord of the flies tendencies... but is it a true and genuine situation? No. It's 100% Hollywood and made for entertainment. I'm on episode 3 and, what gives it away for me is that they have this incredibly overweight guy that supposedly has 4 kids at home (so he has no business leaving them in the first place) that wants to go on this experience to learn how to provide for his family should an apocalypse happen, and one of his first reasons to go is to sort of treat it like a fat camp experience to get in better shape. I already read he gets voted off bc he can't keep up, and in episode 3, hilariously one of the other members offers him dandelion oil and moon charged water for healing.... um, kindly, this guy needs to eat better, spend more time in the gym or at least walk daily, and see a chiropractor, and possibly a surgeon to heal his back. Overall, this "show" is stupid. It's just a controlled "cult like" experience televised for entertainment. I'll finish the episodes bc I can't stand not finishing what I start, but I won't waste my time on a "season 2."

Preppers invade hippie commune
msellis511 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
First off, this is not a cult, it's a bunch of entitled millennials who have bought land (no one says how: who paid for it? And how can they afford to buy fruit trees?) and want to live off the grid but have social media. They have put out an SOS for help settling on this land and 9 people have responded, several of them are self-professed preppers who fold when they actually arrive in the middle of nowhere. (My favorite is Prepper Dad who says he'll do anything to protect his daughters but literally can't climb a hill followed by the Prepper Chick who freaks when she sees a spider)

It all kind of devolves into a poor man's Survivor minus the prize...

This is about a cult
duckduckpoose2 February 2024
This show is definitely about a cult. A left wing eco cult but a cult nonetheless. This shows the lifestyle many hardcore anarcho left wingers want to engage in. Living in the wilderness. Reverting back to some dystopian techno bronze age where you go to the bathroom in hole and never take shower. Where you live in a commune, do all types of backbreaking manual labor, then melt your brain on drugs all day and drive busted cars from the 80s. The problem is that it also shows many communes don't work and how democracy can be abused to just be coercion of the weak by the strong. It lays it all bare. It shows the experiment of communism doesn't work it just leads to uniformity and coercion where secretive insiders rule everything. So yes, it's an interesting case study of why modern left wing anarchism doesn't work and how it's ultimately weird and culty. Thank you HBO for making this show.

I love the show!!!
clarkstrucking14 November 2023
I enjoyed watching this show after hearing about the controversy about it a few years ago. Tyler and Tisheila are my favorite cast members. I have mixed reactions about Tree and Julia after watching episode 1 and 2. With trying to determine if it is a commune or a cult certain things does seem cultish however I don't want to leave any spoilers in this review. I am certainly interested in watching all of the episodes to see how everything plays out. I'm surprised the see how short this series is. A few more episodes would be great to go along with the 6 shows that it has listed for this first season.
