A big deal Adult movie that doesn't add up to much, "Eros Instinct" is one of many Nic Cramer projects that reeks of "big-deal". Among porn directors he remains enigmatic to me - a guy who had hits, was pretentious, yet has quickly become forgotten. Proof of this is that "Eros Instinct" after 25 years wasn't even included in IMDb until I added it yesterday.

It looks good, shot in 35mm and has a fine cast, but is not all that interesting. Basically, the script revolves around a single element: the principal characters gather for their periodic group therapy session and are surprised to have a mysterious woman (played by a mysterious porn actress named just Tye) who claims to be substituting for their usual psychiatrist and puts each one of them on the spot. Calling herself "Dr. Greener", she seems to be a fake, but brings out a memory or fantasy (erotic of course) in each patient, and the movie merely consists of a series of vignettes featuring each of them. Most take umbrage at being pushed around by Tye, but perhaps she's curing them in an unorthodox manner -after all, they've signed up for group therapy in the first place so they want to get better. The film ends even more enigmatically with her sort of confessing to one patient (a self-important movie producer played by Wilde Oscar) that she's a bit like The Devil capturing souls.

Perilously veering close to the dreaded "all-sex" porn format that has become so dominant in recent decades, "Eros Instinct" is provocative but unsatisfying, presenting something of a shaggy-dog story. The sex is the point I guess, with quality XXX performances by a hand-picked but offbeat collection of actors, including Tina Tyler and Shanna McCullough, with superstar Asia Carrera in a supporting role and a relatively unknown star Joelani standing out in the mix.
