insurrection against the pouring of concrete on top of a park in Istanbul.
Giz_Medium1 November 2020
This documentary was put together really quickly although it doesn't show in the quality. It deals with the political uprising in Istanbul that started last spring with the plan proposals to "develop" gezi park, a public park in a popular neighborhood. In this attempt to resist state-sponsored gentrification (isn't it always ?), Istanbul ignited and street battles spread to 80 cities across turkey, against the harsh repressions faced by protesters. What started as an occupation of the park to protect it became a wider protest against the state. The documentary is mixed in between interviews of people at the place of the occupation, and later interviews conducted after their evictions. To me, the most interesting moment, as the movie was being screened in a canadian university, was when they explained how the different anti-fascist ultras, hardcore football fans, of the various teams in Istanbul teamed up in the street battles against he police to protect gezi park, as it was explaining well the various ways political organisation takes the margin (this time on the left although there is similar fascist organisations in other places in Europe).
