Solid mid-tier comedic splatter
schrothjuliaj11 April 2024
I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. I tend to put on horror/slashers on in the background but this one caught my attention. It even had a couple of decent surprises. I rated this as a 7 because it's better than average for this type of genre but it's not going to be to everyone's taste.

If you are looking for something completely original, particularly gruesome, or with a lot of jump scares, this isn't for you.

However, if you like splatter slashers with some comedy, Lowlifes is a good choice. They did a good job with the casting, the characters were fun, and it looked like the cast was enjoying themselves.

If the film makers or cast ever look at this, you did a great job and I look forward to seeing future films.

A Little off the Top
nogodnomasters12 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
An idyllic family from Los Angeles is out camping in their RV. Amy (Amanda Fix) is the moody teen protagonist who would rather go for a walk and smoke than eat another big juicy steak for lunch. They are approach by two hillbillies in a pick-up truck who claim to be looking for their cousin. They are uncouth "lowlifes" as the family fears for their safety. Later they encounter them down the road and end up at a remote farmhouse. Here we meet a family with Savannah (Brenna Llewellyn) aka Katniss who challenges Amy as the film's protagonist.

The film has a wicked twist and some surprises that I enjoyed and found delightfully comedic.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Decent. Worth the time of any slasher movie fan.
sgildea-7830617 April 2024
Lowlifes didn't offer me any surprises when it came to the main plot but definitely has a few unexpected moments along the way.

It's hard to discuss without giving away too much but I wanted to add a little review just to bolster the ratings really as the filmmakers and actors deserve it.

This is a low budget feature but the cast put a lot in and make you root for or hate the relevant characters.

It's acting that hopefully sees the main players get more work in the future.

The action/horror moments are gory and tense and hit the spot of what's hoped for in a slasher movie like this.

It's a little gem of a film that I hope gets watched by a good number of people.

unusual turn leaves story uncertain
SnoopyStyle4 May 2024
A family of four in an RV stops on the side of a trail to have a barbecue. Two hillbillies stop and start asking about their cousin. Later, the family runs into the two hillbillies again. Their truck had broken down and the family is pushed to take one of them aboard the RV.

It is a lower budget Canadian horror with a few recognizable faces. It's Tubi and it's better than expected. There are some fine actors. The surprise turn makes this interesting. I wasn't expecting it, but I was looking for something. This delivers that something. The family is fine initially, but for whatever reason, I like them much more after the turn. They get more fascinating. It leaves me uncertain as to the path of the story and that's a good thing.

Well made
BandSAboutMovies12 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Keith (Matthew MacCaull) and Kathleen (Elyse Levesque) are taking their kids Jeffrey (Josh Zaharia) and Amy (Amanda Fix) on an RV vacation across the country. While the family eats breakfast, Amy goes off to smoke and two backwoods types appear and are vaguely threatening. You've seen it before in, well, nearly every RV horror and rednecks against normal folks movies.

Except this one has a twist.

And I don't want to reveal it because even though I assumed it was coming, the way it plays out was pretty great.

Directed by Tesh Guttikonda (the writer of Influencer) and Mitch Oliver and written by Al Kaplan (Zombeavers), this places the RV family into the home of Vern (Richard Harmon), Billy (Ben Sullivan), Big Mac (Dayleigh Nelson), Savannah (Brenna Llewellyn) and Juli Ann (Cassandra Sawtell). Their home is isolated far from the closest down and the law, which is Deputy White (Alexander Calvert).

Again, without giving much away, this does a great job of pitting the civilized -- a family that barely gets along and use drugs to get by -- against who they perceive as the hopeless uncivilized country folk who carry guns everywhere they go. The film also places your sympathy with some characters and then pulls your feet out from under you when the reveals -- there are more than one -- happen. Toss in some solid comedy that doesn't diffuse the tension and some grisly gore -- look out for that eyeball scene -- and you have a slasher that's way better than what we've come to expect from the genre lately.

"You are an addict.. and a lesbian?!"
striklix5 May 2024
Wow this was actually surprisingly competent to come out of Tubi but I'm not going to be the one complaining about it. I've never actually watched a Tubi original before having seen this film but I have used to streaming service quite a good bit due to its wide range of different films, but since it is a free streaming service that relies on ads I didn't expect it's original content to be all that great and I have a feeling the plethora of other originals they've released aren't really all that amazing - but I am fairly confident in saying that their newest horror film "Lowlifes" was actually quite a bit better than I had expected. It has a lot of things to like about it and despite it very clearly not being perfect and having some pretty noticeable flaws, the late majority of this is at the very least entertaining and more than violent enough to make for a good cannibal centric horror comedy experience.

I completely forgot that this movie wasn't your standard "redneck torture family" thing like you would expect from "The Hills Have Eyes" or "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" until around like thirty or so minutes into the movie the twist occurs and honestly I was somehow blindsided by it. In hindsight it is a very obvious twist but I wasn't paying attention nearly enough to the way it was progressing to get that, but I do believe that it is a really great flip on the usual way these things go and makes for a much more compelling narrative that somewhat falls off towards the end but never entirely nosedives. Although; if there is one thing I can very confidently say about this movie is that I did not enjoy its ending in the slightest, it really reminds me of like "Cabin Fever" so if you've seen that film you know exactly what it means... I don't personally like it but I don't think it's not well done as it does work but just aggravated me, so I can only take half a star off for that fact as this would probably be a four.

If there's one definitive plus I can give to this movie is that I found it to be insanely funny pretty much the entire way through, and that's not something I usually expect going in to horror comedies but almost every single joke in this film worked perfectly for me and that was partially due to just how not serious it takes itself but also the way all the jokes are delivered by their respective actors. It all flows together super neatly and this might be one of the funniest horror comedies I have seen in recent times, definitely up there for this decade and I am a believer that the comedic aspect of this film is clearly the best part of it as a whole. However; that's not to say it's the only good part as the rest is also pretty great, the acting for one is superb from start to finish.. Amanda Fix as Amy is a very clear standout example for the level of talent on display here and she plays conflicting emotions surprisingly well until that kind of fades away towards the end, Matthew MacCaull is probably one of the funniest people I have ever seen on screen and the way he goes about doing everything he does here is hilarious, plus a tiny role given to Richard Harmon who I personally know best from "Grace Encounters 2" but is probably most well known for his amazing role in the show "The 100".

Another really fantastic part about this movie was it's kills and the overall way they're shown - this is a pretty gory film and I can't say I was expecting that in the slightest. From the very first kill shown to us in full detail it is very clear that it handles its effects with care and is brutally disturbing whenever it does so. I mean it is a film revolving around a cannibalistic family so you would expect to see people getting eaten, killed and dismembered but the way it's shown is real gruesome and surprisingly detailed. There's one character who's whole deal for a while is that the favorite part of the human body for them to eat it the eyeballs, and that is both awesome and horrible, plus there's a really amazing scene of someone getting shot through the neck with a bow and arrow and it's exactly as cool and horrifying as it sounds. Definitely much better effects work here than I thought was gonna be present and left me fairly impressed the entire way through, and they never take a significant dip in quality or anything - leaving them visually impressive and compelling to watch, which is always a major plus watching a horror film like this.

Lowlifes is a Tubi original movie that's actually good for some reason? I never thought there would come the day where I would be able to somewhat confidently say that but I do actually think this is an above average horror/comedy that is worth checking out since it's free and super easily accessible. It's not something that's going to go blowing your socks off or anything but it's a wildly fun ride that is never once dull or uninteresting and leaves the viewer with a sense of intrigue and just the excitement of seeing how these two families are going to clash. At the very least I can say that this movie is impressively well made, from it's set designs, acting, and of course effects - this is a movie that I definitely recommend for anyone craving a dumb fun horror film but don't go expecting some masterpiece. It doesn't take itself seriously like ever and neither should you, it's an enjoyable experience and that's all I could really ask from it.

Surprise
Ms_Carter14 May 2024
Being honest I was skeptical when I found out this was a Tubi original I mean let's face it some of the programming on Tubi is scraping the bottom of the barrel But it turned out it was better than I would've expected I liked the role reversal The blood and gore all throughout the movie was amazing But the ending was a glorious chaotic spectacle I noticed a couple people in their reviews were saying something to the effect That the ending of the movie could make or break it Personally I thought the ending was fine I like it when movies throw me twists and turns that I'm not expecting and this movie gave me plenty of surprises.

Awesome horrror thriller with some off-kilt humor
ianfinn24 April 2024
Don't watch the trailer if you really want to experience the twists and turns throughout the movie. This was a really great slasher home invasion style flick it was dark humored, gorey, and never seemed to have a slow moment.

I have to talk about the ending because I actually yelled at the TV wow what a way to end it all. Can't say too much but it did keep me guessing what was happening next but sheesh the end hit like a brick wall to the face but I also love when movies keep you on your toes so after I calmed down I appreciated it more lol.

All in all this was a great horror thriller from tubi or wherever. Would recommend!

One of The Worst Streaming Films of 2024. No Life In This One. Poorly Acted. Poorly Written. Completely and Totally 100% Unbelievable.
RightOnDaddio20 April 2024
From the jump, I knew that this one was going to be hard to follow. The look of it all, the setting, the wardrobe, the exterior, the actors themselves, and then, worst of all, their acting.

It's just all bad and not at all right.

None of it seems normal.

Certainly not believable.

In film, we have to believe.

Buy in.

Even in horror movies.

Especially in horror movies.

I knew that though a mere hour and a half, from the start, with the way this was going, it was going to be a long, long, loooong haul.

A fantastic three hour epic can seem like a viral clip.

A bad, short movie like this can seemingly go on for centuries.

One day I'll want this 90 minutes and five seconds back.

All of it.

So, an oddly-dressed family with perfectly combed hair looking freshly-showered living out of an outdated RV on vacation during a quite chilly time of year (you can see their breath in conversation) as they picnic outside, is encountered by, yikes, two guys in an old truck speaking with southern accents (but of course!) These two guys speak and say things nobody would ever say, ever to strangers, much less a family, and the patriarch in turn reacts how no one would ever react.

Later, they meet again, and more of this awkward interaction continues but this time one of the inexplicably, physically dirty rednecks has a shotgun and they're blocking the road.

Why?

Because this is stupid and it's doing what's been done before but this time, worse, and again, totally not believable.

But, you won't believe this, more bad decisions occur.

And we're not even fifteen minutes in.

And then there's a twist., And it gets the stupid to a whole 'nother ridiculous and grotesque level.

It's cute for a minute, but just a minute.

Then it's back to dumb and even dumber.

Who writes this stuff?

This seems real to you?

Oh, and there's even a lengthy musical interlude.

Yay.

I love a recital injected into the midst of all my horror movies!

You have to ask at some point in some movies, why?

Why is this happening?

Or, as in here, why is any of this happening?

Why are the characters doing what they are doing?

And in this movie, it just doesn't make any sense.

Any of it.

There is a beautiful love scene. A love scene? I know. But it is, and that is the only reason this garbage movie gets rated as high as it does.

This movie wants to be clever but it's not for all the reasons that I mentioned.

Aside from the amazing make out session there is nothing here except frustration and boredom.

This is one of the worst, if not the worst streaming films of 2024.

Take the high road. Live the high life. Don't waste your time and stay away from these Lowlifes.

A surprising gem.

Warning: Spoilers
I was not expecting this movie to be THAT good. Prior to this, Camp Host was the best TUBI film but this one, wow!

The less said about this movie, the better. Go into it blind. It's wild.

The budget is obviously low but the gore effects are very well done and use practical effects.

There are some comical moments in this film. It had some laugh out loud moments.

The acting was above average for a TUBI film and slightly above average for a horror movie.

Umm what else? I don't want to spoil anything but I had a lot of fun with this film. I expected to fall asleep to and I was instantly engaged.

8/10.

Why oh why do you exist.
dumpsterpuppy24 April 2024
It's not often I feel the need to write a review on here, but when I do, it's usually because a movie affected in a profound way. Similar to a late night trip to taco bell after a night of drinking, this "movie" left me with that feeling that I just consumed something that I'd rather remove from my system as fast as humanly possible.

It's unfortunate, but like 90% of the horror movies being made, it's far too easy to predict the "surprises and twists" served up until the very end.

I'd spend my time talking about the finder points of this cinematic abortion, but I've endured enough brain damage for one evening and I think I'm going to read a book and try to forgot someone made this trash.

Unserious movie by unserious people.

Great acting from non-celebrity cast
sancoh23 April 2024
This movie was hilarious. I didn't think it was scary at all it was so campy, but it kept my attention the whole way through. I saw so much social commentary in it, and it was a great allegory representing American culture. The movie just kept playing with your expectations. The actor who played the dad played the part so well I loved and hated him at the same time. I was impressed with the ending because you rarely have a movie that wraps things up so neatly. Although, I would say it did leave room for a part two. The acting and script made it feel less low budget than it probably was, and I was not expecting this from a Tubi original.

The twist ruined it
redban0212 April 2024
I think the movie starts off well. It's an ordinary family on a road-trip, and they get accosted by these weird and rude rural folks. You would assume the movie would basically be a horror where the family is terrorized by creepy rural folks. The atmosphere, setting, and vibe felt right to go this route

Instead, they do a twist early on (no spoilers, I won't say what the twist is), and from there, the movie loses so much. Instead of a horror, the movie becomes more of a dark comedy. And once they reach the house, the characters just keep talking on and on, dragging out the main event of the plot.

My First Tubi Original Film not a HUGE Cinematic Budget, Indie Horror is Different
kmkevinn-6473328 April 2024
This is shocking but the first film that does not have one Certified Audience neither all Audience score at all. Except two reviewers that put it out to the YouTube themselves. Lowlifes is The Hills Have Eyes meets Were the Miller's, The Were the Miller's type family are the cannibals and your rooting for them a ton while the other folks that served spaghetti and meatballs ate definitely going to be dead, yep only 5 of that family were murdered, 3 of the type Miller family are dead as well as the sheriff. So 9 kills of this film and are we grateful that one cannibal left of the family barely survived from a limping leg. Yep I cannot keep this spoiler free because DRUMDUMS stated that this is harder to do, which is why the spoiler review on the other half needs it for sure. The cannibal family loves blood and raw stuff even cooked delicious. Is the type of indie horror film that is not for everyone, if you have Tubi then I am happy, if not then really Rotten Tomatoes get your reviews straight. My rating 9.6 out of 9.2.

Warning: Spoilers
Right from the start, I thought that this "picture" was a little bit out to lunch. But as it went along, it did NOT get better...it got worse. No plot, no story-line, no nothing!! It jumped around here and there and had absolutely no rhyme or reason. It does this movie a disservice to call it the worse of the year. The worse of all-time would be better. I am sitting here just all agog from how bad this movie is. It actually started out as having possibilities. But when the local "townie" gets in with our traveling family and the son attacks him, everything from there, on...plain old stinks. I rated this one a 3 and I think I'm doing you all a disservice in doing so. Hopefully you wont watch it. I apologize.
