The Krampus is the anti-Santa Claus, a wicked beast from the folklore of the Alpine countries of Europe who loves to swat children who have misbehaved at Christmas with his bundle of birch sticks and rusty chains before dragging them in baskets to the underworld. Krampus is celebrated on Krampusnacht, which takes place on the eve of St. Nicholas’ Day. In parts of Europe, party-goers masquerade as devils, wild-men, and witches to participate in Krampuslauf (Krampus Run). Intoxicated and bearing torches, costumed devils caper and carouse through the streets terrifying children and adults alike. Krampusnacht is increasingly being celebrated in other parts of Europe as well as in many American cities and should be a holiday here, like Halloween. Speaking of Halloween, one of my favorite movies on the subject of October 31st was the 2007 anthology shocker Trick ‘R Treat directed by Michael Dougherty so imagine my delight when...

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while Krampus is figuring out how to rip off their heads. The first photos from the upcoming Christmas horror Krampus have been revealed via USA Today. From the same director who reinvented Halloween horror with Trick 'r Treat, Mike Dougherty is next bringing us Krampus, starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Allison Tolman, David Koechner and many others. It's about the Krampus monster (seen in a shrouded silhouette below) who comes to haunt children. I saw some footage from this at Comic-Con and it looks damn good. Until the trailer hits, check out these photos. Here's the first set of photos from Michael Dougherty's Krampus below. View the first teaser poster here. When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit...

Back in 1996, when director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson unleashed the first instalment of the Scream franchise on cinema audiences everywhere, the movie was declared to be just the shot in the arm that the horror genre needed. Dripping with post-modernism and oozing self-awareness, that film succeeded in drawing fresh blood into the horror movie fold. There have been many pretenders to the Scream throne in the intervening two decades, but it seems that one particular set of filmmakers has finally got the recipe right – and we can see proof of that fact in the new trailer for the upcoming horror comedy, The Final Girls.
The filmmakers in question are director Todd Strauss-Schulson (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas), and writers M.A Fortin and Joshua John Miller – here making their feature length debut. This trio appear to have created a comedic horror film so smart and funny, that...

The staples of the slasher genre are sent up again in the horror comedy, The Final Girl. Here's a new trailer...
Horror comedies aren't easy to get right, but when they're on target, the results can be spectacular. To cite two fairly recent examples off the top of our heads, see the ferociously entertaining Tucker And Dale Vs Evil and Cabin In The Woods.
The Final Girls is another meta comedy that sends up the staples of the slasher genre. In it, Taissa Farmiga plays Max, the daughter of a late actress who, in her 80s heyday, was a scream queen in the horror franchise Camp Bloodbath. In a plot twist seemingly borrowed from Last Action Hero, Max and her friends are magically ported into the realm of that movie series. It looks like entertaining stuff, and while we've seen deconstructions of the slasher genre before, its nods to the...

When I was a teenager, the Boy Scout troop that I was a member of consisted of nearly 25 scouts. We had a few older scouts whom the rest of the younger scouts looked up to, and during our weekend camping trips the seniors made every effort to scare the beejezus out of us youngsters with ludicrous tales of ghosts or killers hiding out in the woods. These stories were often woven around a campfire in the late hours of the evening when we were all seemingly vulnerable. During the summer of 1980, Sean Cunningham’s Friday the 13th was doing well at the box office, so I was already aware of these “murderers in the woods”-themed films. This didn’t make it any easier for us to go on camping trips! The success of Friday the 13th gave birth to countless carbon copies of young adults-being-stalked-in-the-woods films.

I absolutely loved The Final Girls when I caught it during the Stanley Film Festival earlier this year, and I can't wait for Daily Dead readers to check out. We were told to expect it out by Halloween and we now have release details for the movie that is so much more than your typical slasher comedy.
"The Final Girls is an unconventional comedy about Max, a high school senior, who is mysteriously transported with her friends into a 1980s horror film that starred Max’s mother, a celebrated scream queen. Trapped inside the movie, Max finds herself reunited with her mom, who she lost in real life. Together with Max’s friends, they must fend off the camp counselors’ raging hormones, battle a deranged machete-wielding killer and find a way to escape the movie and make it back home."

It's an exciting time to be a Man of Action fan. The consistently innovative and impressively productive studio / writers' collective has intriguing upcoming projects on the printed page and onscreen, and at San Diego Comic-Con, Daily Dead caught up with Joe Kelly, Joe Casey, Steven T. Seagle, and Duncan Rouleau, who discussed the Camp Midnight graphic novel, the respective feature films for Officer Downe and I Kill Giants, as well as Big Hero 6 and more.
As per usual with you guys, it's been another busy year for the Man of Action team. Your Comic-Con exclusive comic book from last year, The Bus: A Camp Midnight Mini, is being expanded into a 256-page graphic novel that will be released in time for Halloween. Steven, how did Camp Midnight make the transition from mini comic to full-length graphic novel?
Steven T. Seagle: The mini comic was actually a bit of a ruse.

You don't want to be on his list. Michael Dougherty's 2008 movie Trick 'r Treat is a bonafide modern Halloween horror classic, so it's fitting that Dougherty's follow-up is a Christmas horror movie. And it looks really good. At Comic-Con 2015 today, Legendary Pictures debuted the first teaser for Krampus, about the evil, twisted Christmas monster. The film has an Amblin-esque feel, with some humor and all of Dougherty's brilliant horror tricks. It stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner and Allison Tolman. Hopefully they'll release the teaser soon, but in the meantime, here's the first poster to get you in the mood. Here's the first official teaser poster for Michael Dougherty's Krampus, direct from Legendary Pictures: When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Krampus, a darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday.
When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers.
All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.
The horror-comedy also stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Lavie Owen and Krista Stadler.

This is a repost of our review from the 2014 Toronto Film Festival [Tiff 2014].
Like an orbiting celestial body, a rare Adam Sandler role appears every half-decade or so that threatens to break the actor out of his lucrative fiefdom of low-brow comedy. Punch-Drunk Love looked like a potential turning point in 2002, but a Spanglish or two aside, he avoided further dramatic work until 2010’s Funny People, which earned Sandler wide praise for how capably he lampooned his own career. He then followed that up with Jack & Jill, That’s My Boy, and a pair of Grown Ups. Clearly, if Sandler were interested in a McConaughey-esque career turnaround, he would have gone for it by now.
The underwhelming returns on his latest vacation disguised as a comedy, Blended, along with a pair of upcoming dramatic roles once more see the established Sandler narrative being challenged. The Cobbler is the first of two...

Jaws from James Bond
One movie character who scared me as a child was Jaws, the shiny-toothed James Bond villain. Those silver teeth freaked me out, big time – I remember the early sequence from The Spy Who Loved Me was particularly chilling: Jaws lures a defenceless older man into a trap, and proceeds to bite into his neck, killing him. While we're shown no violence, the whole scene terrified me: the way Jaws walked slowly towards the man in a knowing, menacing way, and the idea of him simply biting the man to death (though at least he had the courtesy to stun the victim first).
Being bitten by Jaws isn't like being bitten by a vampire – he drinks no blood. Instead, he just seems to sink those artificial teeth into flesh and tear a hole big enough to cause fatal bleeding. Whenever I'd watch that scene, it made me deeply uncomfortable,...

Hocus Pocus was strongly criticised on its original release. But why has it endeared as a Halloween favourite? Sarah revisits the film...
Over the 21 years since Hocus Pocus was released, this daft family comedy has become a kind of Halloween staple. From the beginning of October, you’ll start seeing Hocus Pocus gifs and references popping up – and on Halloween night, you might even spot people dressed up as the Sanderson sisters. Watching Hocus Pocus is a comforting, nostalgic experience, especially for anyone young enough to have experienced it on TV as a kid.
But its reputation as a Halloween necessity is something it’s acquired over the years, because when Hocus Pocus came out, critics hated it. Roger Ebert gave it just one star, and complained that it lacked focus and structure; Entertainment Weekly’s Ty Burr gave it a C-, and claimed that for Bette Midler fans, it was “depressing as hell”. Last seen on the Venice Lido in 2009 with his acclaimed 3D horror The Hole, Joe Dante returns to the festival with the disappointing schlock fest that is Burying the Ex. All I wanted to bury was my head in my hands during the screening of this tired, cheap and cliché-ridden film.

"Could this really be what Buttercup wished for all along?!"
I remember this interaction quite vividly, even though it's now been 10 years since it happened:
I was 21. I was in the car with a couple of friends, on our way into the city to catch a movie. The phone rings. It's my mother.
"Hey, ma."
"Hey. What're you up to?"
"Me, Max, and Joel are heading into the city to see Saw."
(Pause)
"What?" she asks.
(Pause)
I take a moment to figure out what could be confusing about my last sentence, then it hits me.
"No, ma. We're going to see a movie named 'Saw.' We're not on our way to play on that thing in a playground."
Ah, yes. It's been 10 years since Saw sliced its way into theaters and became an annual event for horror fans to look forward to every Halloween. The series would have...

From the revenge-via-circular-saw High Tension to the skin-shredding Piranha remake, director Alexandre Aja has memorably dunked past pictures in the blood bucket. But with his adaptation of author Joe Hill’s novel, Horns, coming out this Halloween, Aja has just signed on to helm another book-to-screen project that’s more psychological thriller than bloodbath: The 9th Life of Louis Drax.
Based on the 2004 novel by Liz Jensen that follows a boy plagued by violent occurrences, The 9th Life of Louis Drax will star actor Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Fall) as Dr. Allan Pascal, who tries to figure out the mysteries surrounding 9-year-old Louis Drax’s near-fatal accident. Aja will direct off a script by first-time scribe Max Minghella (who co-stars in Horns). Shooting on the Miramax film is set to begin this October in Vancouver, Canada. On the season finale of "Ravenswood," there is so much awesome. So much.
The Curse
Remy, Luke and Olivia do some research into the bloody-eyed boy Remy saw last episode. He's Ryan Atwater, who it turns out is sort of the teens' conduit into the past -- he showed Olivia the lab fire at the school, not Abby. They go to the mayor's office to see if Ryan will show them what happened to Mayor Matheson.
In a flashback courtesy of Ryan (so everyone can see it), Dillon is revealed as Mr. Matheson's killer, shouting, "I don't want to die" as he stabs the mayor in the chest. But as Dillon was stashing the bloody knife inside Mrs. Matheson's coat, he touched a book and left a bloody thumbprint on in the inside cover. Back in the present, Remy has the evidence in her hot little hand.
But Dillon knows...

Well, here we are – at the precipice of the most anticipated gay television show since The New Normal. May the odds be ever in our favor.
For the next eight weeks, I will be sashaying alongside you through the neon-lit streets of Looking, HBO’s new gay dramedy that is most emphatically Not the “gay Girls“. Which is kind of a ridiculous thing for people to waste so much breath on, because it’s clear about five minutes into the show that Looking has no interest in constantly humiliating its characters, so it already couldn’t be more different than Lena Dunham‘s perfectly enjoyable yet considerably more caustic show. I do not expect anyone to jam a Q-tip through their eardrum or for Andrew Rannels to come sliding down a rainbow made of cocaine to liven up the party. No, Looking appears to be, at first blush, a naturalistic,...

Entertainment Geekly is a weekly column that examines contemporary pop culture through a geek lens and simultaneously examines contemporary geek culture through a pop lens. So many lenses!
1. The last few years has seen a rash of columns about the end of Golden Age of Television. It might at this point be more accurate to declare the end of the Television Age of Television. In the last nine months, the Netflix programming experiment produced a prestige drama with a powerful fanbase; a buzzy comedy which became a love-it-or-be-skeptical-about-it talking point; and a genuinely original (and aggressively uncommercial) series that earned accolades,...

Jennifer Garner had her son, Samuel Affleck, in tow as she ran errands in La on Thursday. The actress had a smile on her face as she held on to her little one; is it us or is Samuel really rocking those choo-choo-train PJs? Jen is back to her usual routine on the West Coast after making a quick trip to Japan for a Max Mara event. As the face of the brand's accessories line, Jen hit the red carpet in a sexy white gown to help celebrate the Tokyo store's 25th anniversary. While Jen was overseas, her husband, Ben Affleck, reported for daddy duty. Ben, who is currently filming Gone Girl in and around La, broke from work responsibilities to take daughter Violet to her basketball practice over the weekend. Before Jennifer headed to Japan, she and Ben joined forces to take their kids trick-or-treating in their Brentwood neighborhood on Halloween.

A few days after Jennifer Garner had some Halloween fun with her cute brood, the actress jetted off to Japan to attend a Marvelous Max Mara event in Tokyo! The face of Max Mara's latest campaign stunned in a long white gown from the fashion house, whose dress featured a leg slit that showed off part of the actress' toned legs. The Dallas Buyers Club star complemented her dress with black Christian Louboutin stilettos, a black clutch and David Webb gold diamond earrings and bracelets. She completed the look with a braided updo and minimalist makeup—smokey eyes and a nude lip. Jen was also later joined by Max Mara chairman Luigi Maramotti as she walked the black...

A new recurring character has been added to Season 2 of "The Following" on Fox, and we also have a bit of guest star casting news to report that got lost in the shuffle last week leading up to Halloween.
First, Aussie actress Jacinda Barrett (pictured; "Suits," "Zero Hour") will play Julia, a very disarming and alluring woman whose mysterious intentions send several main characters in a frightening new direction.
The guest star heading our way is "Oz" alum Lee Tergesen (The Collection, No One Lives), who will appear in the seventh episode as Kurt Bolen, a seemingly normal family man who may harbor a dark secret.
They join the previously announced Keith Carradine as a friend of Ryan Hardy, Jessica Stroup as Hardy’s NYPD specialist niece, Connie Nielsen as a romantic interest for Ryan, Sam Underwood as a dangerous young man/possible follower of Joe Carroll, Tiffany Boone as...

Denise Richards is a wonder woman kind of mom. The 42-year-old beauty took her daughters Sam, 9, and Lola, 8, trick-or-treating on Halloween night where they made a stop at ex-husband Charlie Sheen's house, presumably so the girls could pick up a little extra candy from their dad. Richards, who showed off her fantastic figure in a sexy Wonder Woman costume, also took Sheen and ex Brooke Mueller's twin sons Bob and Max trick-o-treating, making for one big happy modern family. The group was all smiles as they donned their respective costumes while walking from house to house. The kids were seen snacking on candy while Richards held the little ones' hands.
