In a recent interview, Vidya Balan, who in her career has shouldered multiple female-centric movies like Parineeta, Ishqiya, No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture, Kahaani, Bobby Jasoos and Kahaani 2, typically went the sensible way to state, unlike the hardcore feminist brigade of colleagues and media persons, that she had no objection to theRead More

October 31st is Halloween, when kids (of all ages) dress up to go trick-or-treating. Then, of course, there are the cool adults getting in on the costume fun to go to Halloween parties. Since we are all Bollywood buffs, okay fanatics, we thought it would be fun to poll our writers to see who they would love to dress up if we had a Bollywood Halloween – Bollyween Ball. Boy oh boy were we flooded with amazing and inventive ideas.
Some of these costumes you could probably put together easily. However, some might need extra help from family, tailors, costume designers, stylists, costume engineers and even Oscar winning makeup artist Greg Canoom (transformed Srk in Fan and Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire)!!
Check out how the excellent team of BollySpice would celebrate Halloween Bolly-ish style.

For the fourth year in a row, Bollywood star Vidya Balan will be the ambassador of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm), which is Australia’s biggest celebration of Indian Cinema. This year’s festival will revolve around equality – a theme that the Kahaani actress herself reportedly suggested.
Often revered for transforming women are portrayed in Indian cinema, Vidya is no stranger to encouraging equality. “It is wonderful to see the festival putting the focus on issues of equality. Film is a powerful tool for entertaining but also for building awareness and creating cultural and social change,” she noted.
In addition to screening notable Bollywood films, Iffm provides a platform for aspiring filmmakers to showcase their work. Vidya’s recent release Bobby Jasoos will also see its Australian premiere at the event.

''Miyan, captain banoge?''
Mohammad Azharuddin has been a successful Indian cricketer and captain. His wristy stroke-play is legendary, so is his second marriage and separation from actress Sangeeta Bijlani. He loved watches and designer clothes (he still does) and everything glitzy. He was modest when he stormed onto the cricketing scene with three back-to-back Test tons, got the captaincy when the Indian team of the nineties were in their transition phase (they still are, and will continue to be), and when the late Raj Singh Dungarpur, the then Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) Chief tossed the question to him, ''Miyan, captain banoge?''
He took over the reins of a team loaded with four former captains, brought stability in the team's outings overseas and was cruelly run out at 99 Tests, not to forget 334 One-dayers. His biggest loss though was the death of his 19-year-old son Ayazuddin...

We all know what a fantastic actress Vidya Balan is. But for some reason or the other, her last few films like Ghanchakkar, Shaadi Ke Side Effects and Bobby Jasoos, didn't do well.
Ask Vidya if failures affect her personally and she says, "Failures are disappointing. And they do affect you when a film you've invested in so much in, doesn't work. Like I was heartbroken after Ghanchakkar. After Shaadi Ke Side Effects I had learnt to deal it better because I already had Ghanchakkar before. And by Bobby Jasoos, I had two before. I cry, get angry but with my closest people I get it out of my system so that I can move on. I make sure it's not bigger in my head than it actually is."
That's a good approach, Vidya. Moving on from something which is bothering you is always nice.

Vidya Balan is without a doubt one of the finest actresses in Hindi cinema. From her debut in Parineeta where she blew us all away, to her amazing turn in Kahaani, to the fun and oh so good Bobby Jasoos from last year, Balan always completely becomes her character and makes us completely forget she is acting. From what we have seen so far in the trailers, she once again is going to take us on an incredible journey with her character in the romantic drama Hamari Adhuri Kahani. Written by Mr. Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Mohit Suri, the film also stars Emraan Hashmi and Rajkumar Rao.
First you must see the trailer!

In an amazing, open interview with Stacey, Vidya revealed more about how she became a part of Hak, the challenges she faced playing her character and so much more.

Once titled 'hitman' Hashmi due to his superb success record, actor Emraan Hashmi has been searching for that elusive hit for almost three years now. To be precise, his last big hit was Raaz 3 which released in September 2012.
In fact since Raaz 3, Emraan Hashmi has had some very promising films like Shanghai, Ek Thi Daayan, Ghanchakkar, etc flopping at the ticket window. Even his Dharma Productions outing Ungli failed to cut much ice, and the case was similar with his home banner venture (Vishesh Films), Mr X which despite the much touted SFX tanked. In all the cases, the hit music which was always associated with Emraan Hashmi films (and which earned him our title, music's lucky mascot) was clearly missing.
To cut a long story short, all eyes and hopes now rest on the golden boy Mohit Suri (Emraan's friend and cousin) to rejuvenate Emraan Hashmi's career and...

Vidya Balan may not have had a release since Bobby Jasoos but the talented actress surely is been honoured for her contribution to Indian cinema in her almost decade long career. The actress will be receiving the Raj Kapoor Special Contribution award from the Government of Maharashtra at a ceremony to be held in Pune today, April 30. Expressing her happiness over the news, Vidya Balan further stated that she is humbled by the honour and is even more thrilled about the fact that she is receiving this honour from the state government since she is a Mumbaikar. She also added that the name 'Raj Kapoor' is iconic and hence an award named after him holds special importance. From what we hear, Vidya Balan was supposed to fly to Delhi, but she will now be attending the ceremony in Pune and will later fly to the capital.

53 years ago Waheedaji had done a Bengali film with the doyen of Indian cinema Satyajit Ray. Now she is back in Arshinagar, a Bengali film directed by Aparna Sen. She recalls the experience with pleasurable laughter. "When I was offered Abhijaan I didn't know any Bengali at all. But Satyajit Ray Saab insisted, saying my character spoke a mixture of Bhojpuri, Hindi, Urdu and Bengali. I agreed only because he had faith in me." Waheedaji did another Bengali film Jeevan Je Rokom featuring Ranjit Mallick which according to her didn't turn out that well. She loved shooting in Kolkata. "I've shot many films in Hindi and some in Bangla in Kolkata. It's always a pleasure to be part of the city." Waheedaji admits she has always been low on self-esteem. "I always feel I wouldn't be able to carry off what the directors require from me. Luckily I manage. I...

From a small stint in 3 Idiots to a small yet significant role in Hollywood biggie Fast and Furious 7, Ali Fazal has come a long way. Recently, the charming actor visited glamsham office to promote his film Fast and Furious 7 and spoke in length about his maiden step in Hollywood, his experience working on Fast and Furious franchise, what to expect from the film and much more. Here are the excerpts:
How Fast And Furious 7 happened to you?
Fast And Furious is significantly important role. It happened very randomly because when I was shooting for Bobby Jasoos and I got a call. I was chilling around with my friends in the mountains, up trekking there and that's when my agent Purvi called and said why don't you just try it out it being Fast and Furious franchise? Bollywood actors have often mentioned meeting real-life people to get into the skin of their characters. While Rani Mukerji interacted with Mumbai police officers for a cop’s role in Mardaani (2014), Vidya Balan met sleuths to play a detective in Bobby Jasoos (2014).
Now, Emraan Hashmi, too, is doing the same for Hamari Adhuri Kahani. The actor, who plays a restaurant chain owner, has been meeting hotel employees to learn about the nitty-gritties of their profession.
The actor has been taking time out from his work schedules to visit different hotels in the city.
“Every alternate day Emraan visits a hotel and he interacts with the management. He is trying to understand their behavior towards the hotels’ staff and their conduct with the guests,” says a source close to the actor.
Emraan is also meeting a lot of hotel chain owners to know how they function and observe their body language.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha is the latest offering from Yash Raj Films starring Ayushmann Khurrana (Vicky Donor) and debutante Bhumi Pednekar. It also marks Sharat Katariya (of Bheja Fry fame) changing gears from writer to director.
It film features music by Anu Malik (Main Hoon Na), composing after almost two years, his last being Shootout at Wadala. Lyrics have been penned by Varun Grover while vocal talents featured consist of Monali Thakur (‘Sawar Loon’ – Lootera), Papon (‘Tu’ – Bobby Jasoos) and Kumar Sanu (no introduction needed).
The album gets off to a stunner of a start with Moh Moh Ke Dhaage by Papon. The track is very reminiscent of Anu Malik’s more nuanced work in Asoka and Refugee. The orchestration is beautiful as is the haunting melody. Couple with equally beautiful lyrics and a flawless rendition from Papon, the track is any easy winner. ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhaage’ is repeated...

The celebrated filmmaker and cartoonist Walt Disney once said, “Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language.” Whatever background or class you belong to, we all love to relish in a Bollywood film now and again. It transports us in to a world we wish we were a part of, as well as exposing us to characters who we can relate to. So has 2014 been a good year for Bollywood? Well let’s just say there were a minority of good films that form part of a pile of disappointments. It’s not been an amazing year for the Hindi film industry, yet we feel that the films which have lived up to our expectations deserve its due recognition. So without further ado, here are the films that have made the final cut!

As reflections of Indian cinema in 2014 do their rounds, there are some very common conclusions everyone has come to that are undeniable. And that it was not the greatest year for actors but quite a year full of feats for our ladies. Indian cinema has come a long way in terms of credible roles and films for our leading ladies. Whilst we are still flooded with the kind of cinema that provide the leading actress with nothing more than a page of dialogues (if that) and 4 songs, we do get the occasional Sridevi in English Vinglish or a Vidya Balan in Kahaani. 2014 gave us more of these rare moments than we bargained for. No doubt we are still hungry for more from our ladies, however we choose to not stop and lament about what we lack but instead reflect on the brilliant year the ladies of Indian cinema have had.

As audiences mature and develop an attention for detail for cinema, the demands from our stylists increases. When Deepika Padukone sported denim skirts on cold snowy mountains in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani the average viewer to the well versed critique pointed it out. So naturally, our makers have realised the importance of proper styling. 2014 was an impressive year for costumes in cinema. Stylists showed great panache in adhering to script demands. 2014 was particularly impressive because we had numerous films in which the styling contained a lot of subtext about the characters.
BollySpice now presents to you costumes in 2014 that stood out for us. These stylists are applauded for their efforts in making our stars look the part because afterall when you can convincingly look the part, a portion of your job onscreen is already done.

2014 was a fantastic year for music in Indian Cinema. We saw a definite shift from formularistic numbers to more nuanced tunes in step with the respective screenplays they would be featured alongside. Music directors were bold and brave, breaching familiarity and conventions to taking risks and we could not be more mesmerised by the results. Hamlet was adapted to a gritty and raw musical by Vishal Bhardwaj. Ankit Tiwari and Mithoon basically defied gravity by re-creating the magic of Aashiqui 2 with Ek Villian. Read on as Bollyspice closely chronicles 2014’s top 10 music directors.
10. Jeet Gangulay
Jeet Gangulay’s Citylights was the silent hit of 2014 with Arjit Singh’s Mukurane becoming a crowd favourite from the get-go followed closely by Mohd. Irfan’s unplugged version of the song. While Youngistan did not do well at the box office, Gangulay’s ‘Sangemarmar’ definitely left a mark. Similarly, ‘Sun Le Zara’ from Singham was equally effective.

For the music of the films of 2014, the composers brought in classic voices, new vocal sounds and vibes and even an actress or two to bring their songs to life. Usually we limit our list to the 5 Best Female Singers but this year we had to expand to 10 in order to highlight their fabulous performances.
10. Shraddha Kapoor
For the first time an actress makes it to our Best Female Singers countdown. Shraddha not only shined in two completely different roles in Ek Villain and Haider, the young actress also showed off her lovely voice with two completely different tunes. It’s not easy to picturize a song in a movie, get the right mood and make sure that it will touch the hearts of the audience, mesmerize them or just simply be mind blowing. Each year the competition get tougher and it makes it that much harder to choose songs and videos that stand out as the best.

The best situation for a movie buff is not expecting the sweet surprise of a delectable film. Being able to sink their teeth in and enjoy a film that had no major expectation and even maybe a negative viewpoint to begin with. These are the films that silently crept into our hearts and are now there to stay. They’re films that we didn’t expect to impress us to the extent that they did. BollySpice gives you the Top 5 Surprises of 2014.

While we know Mr. Kashyap is a talented filmmaker, we no longer were perhaps as excited for Ugly having waited for it for too long. However, Ugly stood the test of time. These films of 2014 deserved better and should have got a larger audience:
1. Ugly: A beautiful portrait of the darkest areas of the human heart, where greed, guilt and gluttony scamper freely for space. Anurag Kashyap’s film was swamped by the “Pk” wave that hit the theatres at year-end.
2. Aankhon Dekhi: Rajat Kapoor’s haunting portrait of a man on the brink of self-abnegation, looking for reasons to cling to the illusion called life, finding it increasingly hard to go through the motions of existence. Actor Sanjay Mishra’s ‘everyman’ act was exemplary.
3. Children Of War: Debutant director Mrityunjay Devrat recreated the horrors of the Bangladesh war of independence with the authentic passion of Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List”. As a brutal concentration camp officer, Pavan Malhotra was a dazzling embodiment of evil.
4. Sulemani Keeda: Amit Masurkar bitter-sweet tale...

2014 has truly been a year of surprises. The audiences surprised the film makers by accepting movies that perhaps 5 years ago they wouldn’t have, film makers surprised the audiences by challenging the norms of Indian cinema and taking risks with their story telling and above all, actors surprised everyone by delivering performances that we wouldn’t have pegged them to deliver. Bollyspice now brings you a list of Stand Out Performances of 2014. Not all of these performances were lead performances in their individual films but they were performances that stood out of the entire film for us.
Alia Bhatt – Highway
In a recent interview Alia Bhatt confessed that after Student of the Year she was rather disappointed because no one was simply talking about her! Comments were restricted to ‘fresh’ and ‘pleasant’ and never remotely even referring to her actual performance. So she decided in 2014 she would ensure we talk about her and only her.

Khamoshiyan is the latest offering from Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt, written by Vikram Bhatt and directed by Karan Darra. It stars Ali Faizal (Bobby Jasoos) and marks the big screen debut of Gurmeet Chaudhary (TV’s Geet and Punar Vivah) and Sapna Pappi (TV’s 24). Music has been composed by Ankit Tiwari, Jeet Gangulay, Navad Zafar and Bobby Imraan with lyrics by Sayeedd Quadri, Rashmi Singh and Abhendra Kumar Upadhyay. The album features the vocal talents of Arjit Singh, Palak Muchhal and Prakriti Kakkar.
The album commences with Tu Har Lamha, a staple Bhatt number of the soft rock variety, aptly composed by Bobby Imraan and well rendered by Arjit Singh. That being said, it is very formulistic in nature, entirely listenable, but ultimately nothing to write home about. The alternative, Subahan Allah is equally well arranged but Arjit is sorely missed as Anupum Amod does a less than impressive rendition of the track.

After playing the male lead opposite Vidya Balan in Bobby Jasoos, we will get a glimpse of Ali Fazal even in the Hollywood blockbuster movie series Fast and Furious 7. As he gets ready to promote yet another film, a horror titled Khamoshiyaan, Ali also will be donning the director's hat for a short film. The actor has apparently co-written this short film with actor-comedian Hussain Dalal which he will also be directing. Though the film deals with human emotions and psyche, we hear that the duo is still contemplating on the title. Ali maintained that his short film doesn't deal with any complicated plot instead it's a simple and basic storyline which they are trying to put across in a short film format. While currently, Ali will have his time dedicated to the promotions of Khamoshiyaan, it is being said that he will start the shooting of this short...

Happy Ending marks the return of the winning combination of Raj and Dk, Illuminati Films and Sachin-Jigar (Go Goa Gone). Needless to say, listeners have reasonable expectations from the music of Happy Ending.
The album consists of 6 tracks written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and features the vocal talents of Rekha Bhardwaj (‘Ghagra’ – Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani), Arjit Singh (‘Tum Hi Ho’ – Aashiqui 2) and Papon (‘Tu’ – Bobby Jasoos) amongst others.
The album commences with Mileya Mileya. The unprecedented combination of Rekha Bhardwaj, Jigar Saraiya and Priya Andrews is surprisingly good. Rekha’s semi-classical vocals against a background of a mostly contemporary track, makes for an interesting listen. The melody is instantly hummable and the minimal lyrics are effective. However, it’s the signature saxophone that makes the track worth your while.
Barring Amitabh’s relatively humorous lyrics Paaji Tussi Such a Pussycat is quite unremarkable. It ceases to amuse after...

Sonali Cable is writer-director Charudatt Acharya’s maiden voyage, being one of the 8 scripts selected for Mumbai Mantra-Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab 2012. It stars Rhea Chakraborty (Meri Dad Ki Maruti), Ali Fazal (Bobby Jasoos) and Anupum Kher (A Wednesday) in pivotal roles. It also marks the debut of Dance India Dance finalist Raghav Juyal.
The soundtrack features compositions from various music directors including Raghav Sachar (‘Kabul Fiza’) and Mike McCleary (Nautanki Sala).
Sonali Cable is produced under the banner of Ramesh and Rohan Sippy and hits cinemas 10 October 2014.
Ek Mulaqat Ho kicks of the album, a well composed track by Amjad-Nadeem of the Ankit Tiwari and/or Jeet Ganguly disposition. Jubin Nautiyal’s superior vocals more than make up for Sameer’s simplistic lyrics. He has a beautiful classical quality yet blends in with the rock ballad like style of the track brilliantly. Bobby Jasoos has released and it is time for Vidya Balan to move on to her next. While on a personal front, she has gained good appreciation and acknowledgment for her Bobby act, Vidya is now stepping into a romantic zone after a hiatus with Hamari Adhuri Kahaani which is all set to go on floor. For Vidya, it is a different territory altogether as the last film with a strong romantic element was Ishqiya (2010) and that too had its own share of deceit, intrigue and suspense element to it. Ever since then she has experimented with the likes of No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture, Kahaani, Ghanchakkar, Shaadi Ke Side Effects and Bobby Jasoos where she has basically played on her versatility. With Hamari Adhuri Kahaani, she gets into a romantic space after a hiatus. "Well yes, this is indeed an intense love story and as the title itself conveys,...

Vidya Balan’s latest release Bobby Jasoos has made a special place in the audience’s heart and therefore, despite getting an average opening, the film is holding its own at the box-office. Word of mouth publicity has helped the dramedy in a big way and the Tuesday collections of the movie ascertain it.
The film is receiving an overwhelming response from the audience courtesy its novel content and power-packed performances. The movie is especially being appreciated as it is a clean family entertainer and Born Free Entertainment, which is committed to produce good cinema, proves, yet again, that a film can work without sleaze and nonsensical comedy.
Producer Dia Mirza is enthused by the audiences’ warm response and she believes that word of mouth publicity will help the film reach a wider audience. Dia says, “It’s heartening to feel the love of the audiences and the critics alike.

Saturday’s episode opened with hosts Manish and Ranvir sitting in a Sholay style motorbike singing ‘Ye Dosti, Hum Nahin Todenge’ from the film Sholay. The song ended and contestant Mouni proved to be a “distraction” for the boys and the audience were led to thinking they have had an accident. The next scene had two coffins and the judges and contestants were crying as if the hosts Manish and Ranvir are no more. But of course, they both turned up (much to the “disappointment of the judges/contestants!) and the show began as normal. Thankfully!
The first contestant who was safe from eliminations, was Sophie. It was great to see her out of the face-off and being the first contestant to perform on the show. Sophie and her choreographer Deepak, performed an aerial act and their chosen dance style was Aerial and Freestyle. Before Sophie’s act began, we...

After few weeks with single releases, this weekend not only one but two Bollywood films hit cinemas, the much awaited Bobby Jasoos starring Vidya Balan, and Lekar Hum Deewana Dil, the directional debut of Arif Ali, Imtiaz Ali’s brother.
The film is also the debut of another member of the renowned Kapoor family, Armaan Jain, the grandson of late Raj Kapoor (the resemblance is astonishing), as well as the first Hindi film in Deeksha Seth’s career, who has mostly been working in Telugu cinema.
Despite the list of newcomers, Lhdd’s also includes several distinguished names. The soundtrack has been composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
Before we move on to the review, here are few lines about the story. Lhdd follows the lives of Dino (Armaan) and Karishma (Deeksha), two carefree students that love to go out and have fun with their friends.

Born Free Entertainment comes back with its second release and this time with ten times more the confidence. With Love Breakups Zindagi they played it safe but with Bobby Jasoos they take a leap and it pays off.
Samar Shaikh’s is Born Free Entertainment’s weapon of choice and boy do they strike! Vidya Balan leads a cast for the first time since Kahaani and this time for a wholesome entertainer for all ages.
And although ‘wholesome entertainer’ may conjure images of yet another mediocre formularistic Bollywood film let me assure you Bobby Jasoos is anything but.
Set against the culturally rich backdrop of bustling Hyderabad, the film boasts of a high level of detail as far as the backdrop is concerned. From the scenery, to the linguistic to the life style, it all seems to be a slice of life from the heritage city.

Today sees the release of Bobby Jasoos, which is a production of Dia Mirza and Sahil Sangha’s Born Free Entertainment. Starring Vidya Balan, the film about a lady detective, we hear not only has a social message but it also is a fun and entertaining movie. We chatted with Vidya and Dia, now see what their partner in crime, or movies that is, producer Sahil Sangha, had to say about the making of Bobby Jasoos.
Why did you choose Bobby Jasoos as a story you wanted to tell?
When it first came to us the one line on the film was, ‘Guys would you be interested in producing a movie that’s about a girl who wants to become a detective?’ And girl, detective, both sounded really exciting. The fact that she belonged to a small community and was pretty much from middle class India made it even more...

We have loved her work as an actress, but now Dia Mirza has taken on a new avatar. With Born Free Entertainment, Ms. Mirza, along with fiancé Sahil Sangha, started a production company to make the films and tell the stories they felt needed to be told. Their first production was the modern rom-com Love Breakups Zindagi. For their next film, they took on something that has not been seen in Indian cinema before… a female private investigator. Starring Vidya Balan, Bobby Jasoos, which hits theaters on Friday, tells the story of a girl who has a rather unusual dream to be the number one detective in the old city area of Hyderabad.
