There's no doubt Barack Obama will be eating turkey when the White House celebrates Thanksgiving this week. But one familiar dish that won't be served at dinner could just be Mac & Cheese—literally! The President of the United States followed tradition by taking part in the annual National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation Wednesday afternoon where he was faced with the decision to pardon two turkeys—Mac or Cheese. "I am here to announce what I'm sure will be the most talked-about executive action this month," Obama joked to an excited crowd. "Today I'm taking an action fully within my legal authority, the same kind of action taken by Democrats and Republican...

Not impressed. President Barack Obama undertook the White House’s tradition of pardoning a turkey on Wednesday, Nov. 26, and his teenage daughters were, safe to say, not into it. While Obama explained the tradition and introduced the two birds amusingly named Mac and Cheese, his teenage daughters Malia, 16, and Sasha, 13, snuck in subtle eye rolls. “I am here to announce what I’m sure will be the most talked about executive action this month,” the president joked. "There are certain days when I remember why I ran for this office," said President Barack Obama at his first turkey pardon, in 2009. "And then there are moments like this." Ceremonially giving a turkey a pass the day before Thanksgiving is one of the more peculiar duties of our country's highest office. And yet despite his bewilderment, the president continued the tradition Wednesday afternoon in the White House's Cross Hall (bad weather moved the ceremony from the Rose Garden), sparing two birds from the dinner table. "I am here to announce what I’m sure will be the most talked-about executive action this month,...

Last Thanksgiving, Kristan Seaford was in a medically induced coma at a Charlotte, North Carolina, hospital. Her organs were on the verge of shutting down. Doctors told her husband, Brook, to prepare himself and their five children to say goodbye. Seaford, 39, an exercise instructor and avid runner who had qualified for the Boston Marathon, had been planning to host 30 relatives and friends for the holiday when she came down with the flu and strep throat. But the common infection progressed into pneumonia and sepsis, a rare and potentially lethal complication. "Most people that come in that sick don’t survive,...

Dinsey unveiled another piece of the Oscar season puzzle Saturday night with an innovative bi-coastal screening of their big holiday release, the musical adaptation of Into The Woods, which screened simultaneously in New York City and at Disney Studios in Burbank (where I saw it).
Post-screening, a satellite-transmitted Q&A featured director Rob Marshall, screenwriter James Lapine and key cast members. Full disclosure: I have been in love with this Stephen Sondheim masterpiece since even before it debuted on Broadway on Nov. 5, 1987. Southern California native that I am, I trekked down to San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in 1986 for its pre-Broadway tryout and instantly fell in love.
It’s not only one of my favorite Sondheim musicals (in the top three to be sure with Company and West Side Story), but high among the greatest theatrical experiences I have ever had. I have seen the show in various incarnations several times since.

Source: Paper / Jean-Paul Goude Kim Kardashian tried to "break the Internet" with her nude Paper magazine photo shoot, and although the Internet is still up and running, she has gotten a lot of attention from stars on social media. On the one hand, celebrities like Lorde and Naya Rivera expressed an issue with the Nsfw pictures, with Naya posting a comment on Instagram: "I normally don't. But . . . you're someone's mother." Meanwhile, other stars took a more comedic turn. Chelsea Handler posted a bare-butt picture of her own, Zach Braff shared a new version of the photo, and Damon Wayans Jr. shared some creative suggestions. Take a look at the best meme reactions from across the Internet, plus how celebrities are reacting to Kim's buzzed-about pictures. It's been less than 24 hours since Kim Kardashian attempted to "break the Internet" with her butt-baring Paper Magazine cover, and already some stars are slamming the overtly sexy shot.

Happy Veterans Day, or early Veterans Day if this goes up early, or belated Veterans Day if it goes up late! Don’t blame me, blame our unpatriotic commie editors. (Note to editors: It was just a joke! Haha! Please give me back my family.) And what better way to celebrate our veterans than a good old fashioned war movie! But what if, like me, you’re not really a fan of war movies? Well, never fear, because I am here to help with these war movies for people who don’t like war movies. Simple enough? Good. Move Out! 7. Inglourious Basterds Private, this is the closest you can get to a war movie with little to no actual war. It’s Quentin Tarantino, so it’s highly watchable and full of slick action and excellent dialogue. Plus, it has amazing performances from a huge ensemble cast. And yet it still touches (never too heavily) on the...

Maureen O’Hara, now 94, took time to fondly remember the Hollywood greats from her past such as John Wayne and John Ford. Legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki said he was just happy to be in the same room as Maureen O’Hara. Masterful screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere gave a moving tribute to Hollywood’s “forgotten” writers. And Harry Belafonte, winner of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, galvanized the industry crowd by asking them to aim higher.

Adieu au langage - Goodbye to Language
A Works Cited
Introduction
From its bluntly political opening (Alfredo Bandelli's 'La caccia alle streghe': "Always united we win, long live the revolution!") to its hilarious fecal humor and word play—with 3D staging that happily puts to shame James Cameron and every other hack who's tried their hand at it these past several years—Adieu au langage overwhelms us with a deluge of recited texts, music and images, hardly ever bothering to slow down to let us catch our breath. Exhilarating and certainly not surprising—this is the guy who made Puissance de la parole after all!
The release of a new Godard film or video means a new encounter with texts, films and music often familiar from the filmmaker's earlier work—reworked and re-contextualized—as well as new discoveries to be sorted through and identified. This life-long interest in quotation...

Last week we established that Homeland is the best kind of pulp trash merely masquerading as prestige television. Skeptics, you're probably going, "Young lady, let's have a chat." But I am here to say, "Sit down, John." And I will say it right in front of the entire office. (Also you smell like booze.) But listen: At this point Homeland's air of geopolitical relevance is crucial for its brand, particularly when it comes to handing Claire Danes all the Emmys her condo can accommodate. But it's the soapy heart of this show that keeps us entertained and riveted with each salacious cliffhanger. As someone who recognizes the through lines between Homeland and, say, a supernatural teen-monster serial, I feel like I can really help illuminate exactly why Homeland is about on the level of Teen Wolf. (Please note that comparing a show to Teen Wolf is not, nor will...

Not many, but some. 5:17pm - We have repeatedly been promised "exclusive clips." 5:18pm - Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel television is here, and he's moderating the panel. Also, he's an executive producer. 5:19pm - Loeb says NY Comic-Con and NY is Marvel's home and there's a special relationship here. 5:21pm - Loeb is thanking the folks responsible for making this all happen. 5:23pm - "Daredevil" is only the first of five different series Marvel will be doing on Netflix.

Over the past three decades, there has been a steady rise in the share of women, especially mothers, in the workforce. [Collected data shows that] the majority of women and mothers work, and many work full time and full year. This dramatic increase in women’s working hours has had a substantial impact both on household earnings and the economy more generally. Our analysis finds that middle-class households would have substantially lower earnings today if women’s employment patterns had remained unchanged. Had that been the case, gross domestic product, or Gdp, would have been roughly 11 percent lower in 2012 if women had not increased their working hours as they did. In today’s dollars, this translates to more than $1.7 trillion less in output – roughly equivalent to combined U.S. spending on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid in 2012. • The Economic Importance of Women’s Rising Hours of Work, A paper presented at the 75 Years of...

Nightbreed's production and release history is well-known. The rumors of a "director's cut" well chronicled. So I won't dish you a history lesson, after all, that's what Scream Factory's deluxe Blu-ray edition is here for and it does it very well. But, I am here to tell you that after long last, it appears we finally have a cut of Nightbreed that feels more satisfying and cohesive. The theatrical cut was a choppy and hurried. Totally satisfactory, but far from being a home run.
The Director's Cut smooths things out, adds more significance to protagonist Boone, places more emotional weight on his relationship with Lori and injects extra dramatic layers to make the denizens of Midian more sympathetic.

It's no secret that the NFL has been in hot water over multiple domestic-violence issues lately, and on Thursday, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson weighed in on the controversy. Russell wrote an essay appropriately titled "Let's Talk About It" on Derek Jeter's new website, The Players' Tribune, sharing his thoughts and concerns about the issue of domestic violence. He opens the essay honestly, saying, "I used to beat people up," admitting that in his early years, he was a bully. The 25-year-old football player goes on to introduce some new initiatives he's taking against domestic violence, explaining, "For those of us in the NFL, there's no excuse for violence off the field." Read his full essay below. "I used to beat people up. Truthfully, I used to beat people up a lot. Many of you readers probably think I have been Mr. Goody Two-Shoes my whole life, but honestly,...

Sarah looks back at the Amityville films, and finds a lot of scary things, not all of which were intentional…
112 Ocean Avenue, Long Island is probably the most famous haunted house in the world. Not that you’ll necessarily recognise the address – it’s far better known as the Amityville Horror house. Back in 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved their family into the house… and then 28 days later, they moved back out, claiming to have been driven out by supernatural forces. Their story made the news, was turned into a book, and then made into a movie, in 1979.
It’s hard to imagine now that a family claiming to have encountered the devil in their basement could cause such a massive fuss, but I’m not here to interrogate the truth of their statement. What I am here to do, though, is to watch all of the Amityville Horror movies made to date,...

I listen to feminists and all these radical gals – most of them are failures. They’ve blown it. Some of them have been married, but they married some Casper Milquetoast who asked permission to go to the bathroom. These women just need a man in the house. That’s all they need. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they’re mad at all men. Feminists hate men. They’re sexist. Stream of consciousness is my most abused term, my tool for any defence. I have always maintained that I fear being institutionalised and branded by any school of thought because I feared any sort of competition. I feared being exposed and not knowing enough. I am here to address the issue of Lois Lane not being sucked into the Phantom Zone. Some say it is bad writing, some say it's because "Superman has to save her anyway". Both could be true, but for those negatives naysayers have, fans can also have their own postive look on things. Some have even accused this film of "spelling everything out" for the viewers (ie. the explanation of terraforming) which is the only example of that. This film leaves lots of things open for debate that are meant to be assumed. Which I can applaud Snyder, such as the Kryptonian suit being left on his Familys ship. Explaining why it is there. Moving on... The plan to send them to the Phantom Zone was explained on the air strip where the military loads Kal's pod onto the carrier. It was said a singularity would be created when the...

Michael Douglas is having a rough day. In an interview at EW’s Comic-Con Hideout, the Ant-Man star confessed that he was experiencing gas and was “f–king melting.” No one said Comic-Con was easy.
Despite Douglas’ struggles, the cast was happy to tell EW as much as they could about the upcoming Marvel movie—which isn’t too much. But it did come to light that Evangeline Lilly is having a hard time playing dumb when people ask her about the movie and that Paul Rudd has a tie clip—just don’t ask him about it; he might get self-conscious.

I know I’ve done it before, but there was just no time for this one. I am sorry. That’s really nice that you love dance movies, but I am here to talk to you about something else. No, not Matthew McConaughey. Not his Oscar. Alright Alright Alright. Happy? Let’s get to it. My Oscar. No, no, I don’t want to wait until next March. I’d like it now. No, right now. I know Foxcatcher hasn’t even been released yet, but I think that I’ve got a little something for you that might sway your opinion. Here, take a look, then let’s talk about that little gold man.” Me, winning! America...

Hello, and welcome to The Best Of Number Two here at The Liberal Dead. We haven’t done any kind of theme for a long time, so I thought I would reach out to some some talented people from other sites, and see if we can put something together. I decided it would be a theme about the best second films in a franchise/series. Expect discussion about Metamorhosis: The Alien Factor, The Devil’s Rejects, C.H.U.D. II, Blade II, Sleepaway Camp II, Amityville 2, Island of the Fishmen, The Dark Knight, Final Destination 2, House II and more.
C.H.U.D. two took the first one and said, “hey, you, first one. Fuck off. You were all gritty and awesome. I am gonna come here and pretend I am a Police Academy movie directed by Mark Goldblatt.” Well to C.H.U.D. two, like my shorts, I salute you.

E3 was earlier this month and one of the things I enjoyed most about the expo was getting a better look at Nintendo’s upcoming Hyrule Warriors. The combo of the Dynasty Warriors series with one of the Big N’s oldest and best franchises, The Legend of Zelda, seems to be as winning a combo as Pokemon and Nobunaga’s Ambition (Pokemon Conquest.) If we are lucky, it might be as fun a fusion as Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts, which combines Disney elements with Final Fantasy. Based on all of the recently released footage, Hyrule Warriors looks to be a thrilling game, however, I have some reservations about some of the character designs. Put aside complaints about Link’s ultra blonde hair and scarf in this rendition of the character, I am here to talk about the design of the female characters.

Prince Harry was moved almost to tears Wednesday after meeting young children in Brazil who had lost their mother. Harry, 29, whose own mother, Princess Diana, died in a Paris car crash in 1997, when he was 12, was introduced to two young girls who are being raised by their grandmother because their mother had been murdered and their father is in jail. After meeting them in a deprived area of Sao Paulo, Harry told reporters that he was moved by the experience and felt the urge to share his own experience from when he was young. But he decided to hold back.

Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese national team were handed a crushing defeat against Germany in their World Cup 2014 debut in Brazil.
Cristiano Ronaldo Held Scoreless In World Cup Debut
Ronaldo, who trained with his team at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador Sunday in preparation for Monday’s game, was held scoreless against Germany, unable to help his squad cut in to their opponent's 4-0 win. Prior to the game, Ronaldo, though eager to help his country’s team, admitted that it would take more than him to elevate them above Germany.
“I would like to be 110% fit but I am 100% fit and that should be enough to help the national team,” the Portugal captain said during his scheduled press conference, referring to his recovery from a knee injury. “I am here to help, I believe I can make a difference, but one player is not a team. I cannot...

Wonderful true story about a mixed-race woman raised in an aristocratic British family in the late 18th century; like the best Jane Austen romance with an angry social conscience. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m hungry for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Warning: I am about to get sweary about a genteel romantic costume drama.
To everyone who has ever said or believed that white men built the world on their own and bestowed civilization on the rest of us? Fuck you. To anyone who has ever said or believed that the stories of women and everyone not-white haven’t been told because they’re not worth telling because, obvs, they did nothing significant? Fuck you.
That the stories of women and nonwhite people — and nonwhite women! — have been erased from the history books does not...

Gabi says a final farewell to her loved ones.
Anyway …
Shirtless hungover Brady. Ha! He has the most garish, tacky heart tattoo on his arm. Theresa loves it. He looks at it and screams.
Hope is at the club when Julie come sin. Hope tells her that Gabi is about to enter a plea, and because Julie is Nick’s closest family, she has a right to object to the terms if she wants. Julie, I swear to god …
Kate and Sami are at each others’ throats, and Sami tells her “Shove it.” Ahh … it’s so nice to have things back to normal.
Victor comes by to see the guys before they leave for the courthouse. Will is dressed like Arthur The Aardvark. He tells them if there’s anything he can do, just let him know. Sonny tells Victor how lucky he is to have an uncle like him,...

Impressed by the depth and emotional quotient of Shraddha Kapoor‘s voice in the trailer of Ek Villain, director Mohit Suri decided to take her voice beyond the song and convinced singer-composer Raju Singh to integrate her voice in the background score of the film.
Hence Shraddha Kapoor came for the recording Raju Singh’s Juhu studio [Mumba] and spend quality time with Raju, Mohit Suri and Tanuj Garg.
“In Ek Villain, the background holds a very important part, as it is the love story of a villain and one needs to keep the darkness in the romance element as well,” explains Raju Singh. “Mohit has an amazing music sense. And I felt this even with his film Zeher and his other movies till date. His sensitivity towards portrayal of relationships never ceases to amaze me. This time, Mohit mentioned Shraddha and the moment I heard her voice, I knew here...

Leave it to Canadian funnyman Jim Carrey to spice up a graduation ceremony.
Carrey received an honourary degree from Iowa's Maharishi University of Management this past weekend, and in his classic style delivered a speech that combined his trademark humour and sincerity. The audience is pleased, as you can see in the video (above).
"I am here to plant a seed today, a seed that will inspire you to move forward in life with enthusiasm of hearts and a clear sense of wholeness," said Carrey. "The question is, will that seed have a chance to take root or will I be sued by Monsanto?"
Carrey was famously close to his late father, Percy Carrey, whom the actor frequently refers to. The family actually lived out of a van in the Toronto area at one point after Percy lost his job.

On Friday night (May 16) Macklemore wore a strange costume to his concert in Seattle, and some of his fans took offense as it appeared to them to be making fun of Jewish culture.
The “Thrift Shop” rapper issued an apology for his attire on Monday (May 19), explaining that he’s not anti-Semitic and never intended to hurt anyone’s feelings.
Macklemore shared that he merely wanted to “dress up in disguise” and he couldn’t find a fake nose that fit his face, “so I ended up with a big witch nose.”
“I’ve always loved dressing up and have been doing so my entire career. The character I dressed up as on Friday had no intended cultural identity or background. I wasn’t attempting to mimic any culture, nor resemble one. A ‘Jewish stereotype’ never crossed my mind.”
He added, “I acknowledge how the costume could, within a context of stereotyping,...

Macklemore, the front man of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and the rapper behind “Thrift Shop,” was accused of performing in an anti-Semitic costume on Friday.
Macklemore: Accused Of Being Anti-Semitic
Friday, May 16, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis surprised fans at the Emp Museum in Seattle with a short concert, but the unannounced show wasn’t what had everybody talking the next few days. Instead, it was Macklemore’s strange costume, resembling caricature-like Jewish stereotypes.
Wearing a huge fake hook nose, a fake thick beard and a heavy black wig with a silky button down shirt and a black suit jacket, Macklemore certainly looked like he was dressing up to resemble the hateful caricatures of Jewish men.
Seth Rogen Calls Out Macklemore
The costume raised many eyebrows and caused wide spread outrage after Seth Rogen tweeted about it on Sunday, writing in a message to Macklemore, “first you trick people into thinking you’re a rapper,...

Peter Dinklage knows the ending to “Game of Thrones,” or at the very least, he has been given some hints, not that he necessarily wants them. He did offer to tell me when I spoke to him about “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” but he also gave the classic rejoinder that if he did, he’d have to kill me. If you watch the above interview, you will see that I attempted to get answers, and was even willing to sacrifice myself for them. However, as I am here to tell the tale, I don’t know where the show is heading. What I can tell you is that, given the opportunity, Dinklage would like to work with fellow “Game of Thrones” cast members Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) and Stephen Dillane (Stannis Baratheon). As he pointed out though, that really can’t happen on the show, “I don’t think...
