Prelude to Cristina's departure
s_tomas1 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This Cristina-centered episode sees the character confront ghosts from the past that come to haunt her relentlessly. Only two episodes away from the season finale -and also Sandra Oh's departure from the cast-, a seemingly normal medicine plot line has a man struck with quadriplegia, doomed to live a life connected to a ventilating machine, unable to move from the neck down and speech impaired, or else choose to die honorably, either decision being also experienced by his wife who is by his side.

His potential responses elicit different life scenarios in the direction taken in Cristina's life and mirrors on her own possibilities, and potential answers. One is coming to terms and embracing Owen's life plans, putting her happiness and professional life in the back burner, coming to the final realization that is is never what she expected out of life all along, and feeling miserable, but leaving Owen joyous.

The other scenario finds a less-committed Cristina that doesn't intend to take her relationship with Owen too seriously, prioritizing her happiness and her professional life. As a result of this, her love life wraps up in crisis, since Owen ultimately wants kids.

The patient makes his decision, resulting in a confused distraught Cristina who has revisited her own scenarios, none of which place her in a good position. This episode acts as a prelude to her departure, letting viewers see her wondering what it is that she actually wants in life, with three transcendental questions that reverberate all through the episode, whose answers will, evidently, cast some light as for the possible reasons that she decides her time has past.

Ambitious bottle episode

Putting Sandra Oh/Yang in a lot of situations that were unlikely given the direction of her character, fun to see fan service. The episode really, really struggles with coherence, given the vague timelines. Either way, a great Yang focused "send-off" episode.

Bittersweet - Beautifully written, incredibly acted and a pivotal point in the season.

Warning: Spoilers
While this episode is largely a standalone, it is extremely important and provides some resolution to the love story between Cristina and Owen. That resolution may prove somewhat unsatisfactory to long time supporters but it demonstrates that the relationship is simply not feasible and that's okay.

This episode is well constructed and paced well. Oh's portrayal of Cristina in this is subtle but poignant. In particular, seeing the first trajectory where Cristina has children we are blessed with some incredible scenes, from the delivery room to the scene of the various children at the bouncy castle. The dialogue between Cristina and Meredith in this latter scene is painful to hear, powerfully conveying Cristina's resignation to the reality that she has made the man she loves so happy but through her own sadness. This bittersweet moment comes to a head when we see Cristina crying in the bathroom at the Harper Avery awards, this emotional release is a great payoff to the build up in reluctance, acceptance and sadness.

The second trajectory drives home the level of unsustainability that we have come to accept to Cristina and Owen's relationship but to another extreme, it reminds the audience of the true incompatibility to a couple with so much chemistry.

The episode is bittersweet but rewarding narratively as there is some closure to be found in indulging in the two possible outcomes for such a longstanding pairing; this of course sets up the end of Cristina's story on the show and makes the final scene between Cristina and Owen in the finale that much more heartbreaking.

Important Character Wrap-up Episode
baileycash-1160126 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode marks the beginning of Cristina Yang's departure arc. It illustrates Cristina's choice between choosing between a reality where she lives to make Owen happy, and another where she and Owen continue a no-strings-attached relationship, following the life-or-death decision of a paralyzed cardiac patient. Over the course of these two stories, becomes clear that neither of these realities are ideal or healthy, as one person ends up suffering or making an undesired sacrifice. At the end of the episode, Cristina chooses not to further pursue a relationship with Owen.

It's not the most exciting episode, but narratively, it's super important.

Just awful

This is one of the worst episodes of this show I've ever seen. It was boring and all I could think of was the movie Groundhog Day.

Superbly written

One of the best episodes.

If you're past your twenties, you'll be able to relate. It really hits home if you have ever made a big decision in your life that you didn't support one hundred per cent, and shows the different outcomes that could have.
