For viewers of recent horror anthology project Mexico Barbaro, director Edgar Nito needs little introduction. Surrounded by more experienced directors and bigger names Nito's segment was, nonetheless, a clear standout in the acclaimed anthology, a true gem of a piece packed to the gills with a vibrant edgy energy. And so it's significant news that after a string of critically acclaimed short films Nito is now in production on his debut feature. Guachicolero stars Eduardo Banda as a young man working with locals gangs to siphon gasoline out of government pipelines to sell on the black market. Plenty of familiar names on the production side of this as well with Joshua Sobel (Are We Not Cats, Graceland, Scherzo Diabolico), Annick Mahnert (78 / 52, Dearest...

“Are We Not Cats,” the closing night screening at the Venice International Film Critics’ Week, is the strange but tender story of a man who attempts to restart his life, but is sidetracked when he meets a woman who shares his unorthodox habit, a proclivity for eating hair. In honor of its unique premise, the New York-based filmmakers commissioned Iranian artist Morteza Mottaghi to create an art piece for the film’s key art, which will premiere along with the film at Venice. The piece was created completely from 100% human hair – including hair from Mottaghi’s own grandmother – and then the poster adapted and designed by Giant Films, a graphic design firm based in Mexico City. See the poster below.

It's every mother's worst nightmare: the abduction of her child and the panic and desperation that immediately ensue. The prolific writing duo of Adrian and Ramiro Garcia Bogliano (Cold Sweat, Scherzo Diabolico) and noted Argentinian genre director Daniel de la Vega (Necrophobia) play to a genre audience by infusing their film with blood and gore and supernatural elements. But make no mistake: White Coffin is primarily a film about a mother's resolve in the face of unimaginable despair and the lengths she will go to to save her child.

An initially intriguing thriller setup leads to something quite honestly disturbing in Adrián García Bogliano's Scherzo Diabolico, now available to watch via various Video On Demand platforms (and on DVD, too!). Opening with helicopter-style overhead shots, following a car as it winds its way through a wooded region on a two-lane highway, rather like Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, the movie then cuts to Aram (Francisco Barreiro). He's driving alone, though when he eventually returns home we learn that, like Jack Torrance, he's struggling to get along with his wife (Milena Pezzi). At least their only child, a son, doesn't have any supernatural inclinations. Aram is a fiercely dedicated worker who is more than willing to work many overtime hours. But then his boss Granovsky (Jorge...

With his latest, deviously disturbing horror film, Scherzo Diabolico, now infecting VOD platforms everywhere, writer/director Adrian Garcia Bogliano is plotting his next move. And it's taking him to Sweden. Christina Lindberg -- yes, that Christina Lindberg, the one who memorably starred in Thriller/They Call Her One-Eye (1973).and inspired Quentin Tarantino to make Kill Bill -- will star in the film, titled Black Circle. The film "follows the story of two sisters whose lives change dramatically after going through hypnosis using a mysterious vinyl album recorded in the 1970's." It's of note that the filmmaker is also a huge aficionado of music from that period, hosting a radio show that, whenever I've listened to it (in Spanish), is enlightening and features a frightfully weird selection of...

Over the last few years, Adrián García Bogliano has quickly become one of my favorite independent filmmakers due to his work on projects like Cold Sweat, Penumbra, Here Comes the Devil, Late Phases (easily the best werewolf movie we’ve had since Dog Soldiers), as well as his latest film, Scherzo Diabolico, a pitch-black revenge/comedy hybrid that demonstrates ambition always comes with a hefty price tag, especially when kidnapping is involved.
Scherzo Diabolico was released this week by Dark Sky Films on DVD and VOD platforms everywhere, and in honor of its release, Daily Dead had the chance to catch up with Bogliano, as well as Francisco Barreiro, who stars in the film and previously collaborated with the director on Here Comes the Devil. After directing Late Phases, his English-language debut film, Adrián García Bogliano returned to Mexico to work again with Here Comes the Devil’s Francisco Barreiro. The result was Scherzo Diabolico, in which Barreiro portraits a middle aged man who -- while waiting for better circumstances at his work and also to put together his marriage -- will become the worst nightmare for a young girl (Daniela Soto), turning himself into an iconic masked psychopath. Scherzo Diabolico is out today on VOD & DVD, so here’s part of a conversation I had with Bogliano back in early 2015 about his latest film. What was the genesis of this return to Latin-American cinema after your English-language debut? Adrián García Bogliano: While doing Late Phases, I used to read line...

Horror Movie News New short film reminds you that They’re Closing In – With filmmaking equipment more affordable and accessible than ever, it’s only natural that we’d start to see a proliferation of really amazing short genre films. And we have one for you today. This one comes from director Jarrett Blinkhorn, who offers up They’re Closing In. This tense five minute chiller finds a husband and wife trying to hold it together while under siege from what appear to be aliens. The short is more of a sketch than a full-fledged story, but it makes me interested to see how Blinkhorn could expand the idea into a feature. Check it out below. The latest horror outing from director Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Here Comes the Devil, Late Phases, Cold Sweat and Penumbra) will soon be haunting the U.S. and the first trailer has been released. Set for release on May 3 via a variety of Video On Demand platforms, Scherzo Diabolico concerns a teenage girl (Daniela Soto Vell) and an accountant (Francisco Barreiro, Here Comes the Devil). Things are not going well for the accountant. He's under extreme pressure at work and at home, and he's driven to do terrible things in an effort to relieve his stress. That leads to him snatching the girl, but things do not go as he plans. The trailer, which debuted via EW, looks extremely dark, but the director provided a little...

Scherzo Diabolico, when squinted at from afar, might resemble one of the Coen Brothers’ crime-driven dark comedies. The story – about a kidnapping gone right which goes terribly wrong only after the victim has safely returned home – is at least unconventional enough for the standards of Joel and Ethan. However, the premise is all the film’s got going for it, and not long into proceedings I was praying for a more capable filmmaker (or filmmakers) to wrest it from writer/director Adrián García Bogliano’s hands.
The plot is preceded by a drone-filmed shot of a Mexican highway, fenced off on either side by trees and fields. The not-quite-bird’s-eye-view moves menacingly across the landscape and swoops in toward the cars on...
