(Yawning) In The Basement

Warning: Spoilers
Wow this was bad, like real bad. First of all the performances are very awful, not even one of the actors is convincing. The crazy man who kidnaps women to make them part of his fantasy family should be more intense, terrifying and brutal but he seems to be simple, weak, dull. The whole point of the film was for the bad guy to get what he deserves in the end but the way the girl killed him was so dumb. So the man didnt know that the girl he kidnapped has some kind of demonic possession or superpower and this meant his downfall. So in the end we get a bloody (kinda gory) scene where the girl made the man literally explode. I dont know i found the whole thing to be super cringey. Nothing original about this short film, it's just two cliches thrown in the blender and the result is tasteless and boring. It's a combination of the ''psychopath with a basement obsession'' and a ''demon possessed girl with eyes turning black'', a deep demonic voice and some sort of super power. This short film lacks logic, good performances, a plot that makes sense, tension, suspense, good use of music and a solid horror vibe. The only interesting thing about it was the visual effects they used for the scene where the man dies, that's it. My rating is 2/10.

Laughably bad

Awful acting and a completely stupid story. I'm guessing the ratings are biased, maybe friends and family. The "twist" is so nonsensical I didn't know how to take it.

In the Basement: That's how you do it

Plot

A young girl is kidnapped, forced to play the role of one of his daughters in a perverse family fantasy he has devised. However on this occasion he may have kidnapped the wrong girl.

Cast

Unfamiliar

Verdict

Standing at around 14 minutes this is enough time to tell some sort of story albeit a limited one. In the Basement manages to do this, in fact it knocks it out of the park and delivers an incredible tale.

The cast are great, the execution is near flawless and though the big finale twist may not come as a surprise it's done so well and it's so fitting it's hard to be mad.

It's people like writer/director Matthew McGregor that need calling up to Hollywood to show them how it's done.

The Good
  • Exceptionally well made
  • Great finale

The Bad
  • Rather predictable

Rants

Taste is subjective, but looking at the profile of one of those who slammed this I have to question that.

Bucket List 1/10 but Mortal Kombat the cartoon 10/10 Pay It Forward 2/10 but Billie Piper Honey to the Bee 10/10 Burn Notice 1/10 but Jack & Jill 10/10 Avatar 1/10 but every Kanye West music video 10/10.
