Producer Sam Raimi unleashed some gnarly cheese grater horror in last year’s Evil Dead Rise, and his next film as producer is armed with the very same skin-obliterating weapon.
I’m of course talking about Boy Kills World, which stars Bill Skarsgård as a deaf-mute action hero. The film from producers Sam Raimi and Roy Lee is described as “a one-of-a-kind action spectacle set in a dystopian fever dream reality,” and Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions are bringing it to theaters on April 26. How about a gory Red Band clip while you wait?!
Boy Kills World is rated “R” for “Strong bloody violence and gore throughout, language, some drug use and sexual references.” Preview some of the gory violence below…

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

When "The Postcard Killings" arrived in theaters back in 2020, we all turned our noses up at the idea of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a detective on the case of the serial killer who offed his daughter. "No, Jeffrey Dean Morgan," we said, "we reject your offer of a trauma-propelled crime thriller," and promptly bestowed on his ill-fated film a 38% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics were even more intolerant of this adaptation of James Patterson and Liza Marklund's #1 New York Times bestselling thriller. "There just isn't enough depth to the screenplay," proclaimed Variety, while the LA Times accused the film of being "awkwardly pitched between serious art and pulp trash." All of which resulted in an abject 24% critic score on Rt. Despite the involvement of award-winning Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanovic, then, "The Postcard Killings" was pretty much Doa.

With The Postcard Killings’ popularity on the rise thanks to its placement on Netflix, many are wondering if The Postcard Killings 2 will ever happen.
The movie follows Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Jacob Kanon, a retired cop who is on the hunt for the serial killers who brutally murdered his daughter on her honeymoon. While there’s some conclusiveness to the ending, the door is left wide open for another installment.

Netflix scored 18 Oscar nominations for its 2023 films, with eight for feature films — the most of any distributor. All told, Netflix had nine nominations in top categories incuding Best Picture, International Film, Animated Feature, acting, and writing categories.
Not that Netflix’s domestic viewers seemed to notice. Since the Oscar nomination announcement January 23, not one nominated film reentered its top 10 most watched film list. Since then, two obscure titles have held the top spot: “The Hill,” a faith-based sports biopic that grossed under $8 million when it was released last summer, and “The Postcard Killings,” a 2020 home video-released European murder mystery directed by Oscar-winning director Denis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”).
Nominees fared somewhat better in VOD viewing. Led by “Oppenheimer” (Universal), all five Best Picture nominees that are available to view and without a streaming alternative placed on at least one top 10 list.

The family of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has said an upcoming film inspired by her life is “grossly inaccurate” and misrepresents her work in a statement sent to journalists Tuesday afternoon.
In the statement, the family said it is “very concerned” by the film’s preliminary script, which they say contains “significant inaccuracies” and misrepresents Anna’s life, work, and family.
The film, previously titled Mother Russia, tells Anna’s story as a world-renowned journalist and human rights activist who went from being a local print journalist to braving the Chechen killing fields and exposing Russian state corruption under Vladimir Putin.
Anna refused to give up reporting on the war in Chechnya despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence, including being poisoned. She was ultimately murdered in the elevator of her block of flats, and it remains unclear who paid for the contract killing.
BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake (The Village) plays Anna in the biopic.

Eagle Pictures was Italy’s top-performing distributor in the second quarter of 2022, thanks in part to its long-standing relationship with Paramount which saw it handle the Italian release of Top Gun: Maverick. Under the deal, Eagle Pictures will handle the Italian release of Spe features and the partners will also produce five Italian and European films together, which will then be distributed internationally via Sony’s worldwide distribution network. From producers Sam Raimi and Roy Lee comes the upcoming action-thriller Boy Kills World. The film is said to be a “one-of-a-kind action spectacle set in a dystopian fever dream reality,” and we’ve got a taste of the madness for you this week.
Over on Twitter, Roy Lee has shared the original proof-of-concept trailer for Boy Kills World, giving us a sneak preview of the action thrills we can expect from the feature film.
In Boy Kills World, “Boy (Bill Skarsgård) is a deaf-mute with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, Boy escapes to the jungle and is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death.”
The proof-of-concept trailer of course features a different actor in the role of Boy, but it gives you a good idea of the over-the-top violence the final film will bring along with it.

Moloch opens in 1991 as a young girl feeding a mouse is frightened by the sounds of what sounds like an extremely violent attack in the room above her. Soon blood is raining from between the floorboards and pouring down the walls onto the terrified girl.
Thirty years later, Betriek is now grown up and has a daughter of her own, Hanna (Noor van der Velden). It was Betriek’s grandmother that we heard being killed in the prologue. Her father Roelof was traumatized by her death and still drunkenly waits for the killer to return. Her mother suffers from an unknown illness that subjects her to what seems to be seizures. There was a time when a serial killer film, based on a novel written in part by James Patterson, would be a hot commodity in Hollywood. In fact, at one point, The Postcard Killers (the novel’s original name) had no less than famed cinematographer Janusz Kamiński signed to direct, after filmmakers like Paul Greengrass and Gavin O’Connor had flirted with helming. However, those incarnations were not to be, and this weekend The Postcard Killings (a retitling meant to make it seem even more generic) opened, destined to be quickly forgotten about. Without the same talent behind the camera, the flaws are even easier to spot than they otherwise would have been. Misguided, boring, and even often tasteless, this is a real dud. The movie is a crime drama, following a series of brutal murders. When his daughter is murdered, along with her husband, while on her honeymoon in Europe,...

Postcards from the Dredge: Tanovic’s English Language Debut a Major Misfire
Films presenting serial killers who desire to make like The Police and turn murder into art are a dime a dozen these days, often featuring questionable psychological solipsism on the crafting of the sociopath. Borrowing the tone and trauma of many a Nordic Noir, Bosnia’s celebrated director Danis Tanovic ended up being the responsible party to direct the film adaptation of the 2010 novel The Postcard Killings by James Patterson and Liza Marklund. Stuck in developmental hell for years as it passed hands from several directors and cast members, the end result bears all the telling marks of a strained project as a tired, horrendously written thriller which is a chore to sit through from its briefly promising start to its inane finish.…...

There have been a lot of adaptations (primarily for TV) of megaselling author James Patterson’s pulpy fictions, none particularly memorable, with the possible exception of hit 1997 thriller “Kiss the Girls.” But then, his books seldom aim for much more than disposable entertainment, so it’s apt enough that their screen versions should follow suit.
By that standard, there’s nothing really wrong with “The Postcard Killings,” which derives from a one-shot 2010 collaboration with Swedish crime novelist Liza Marklund that hit No. 1 on the U.S. bestseller list. But there’s nothing very right about the British-American co-production, either. Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan as an NYPD detective tracking his own daughter’s serial killers across Europe, this uninspired detour into impersonally commercial English-language terrain for Bosnian director Danis Tanovic (an Oscar winner for 2001’s “No Man’s Land”) should provide Patterson’s fans and undemanding miscellaneous viewers with an acceptably slick...

"You've got exactly four days to prevent a murder." Rlje Films has unveiled an official trailer for a serial killer thriller titled The Postcard Killings, adapted from the bestselling book of the same name. A New York City detective investigates the death of his daughter, who was murdered while on her honeymoon in London; he recruits the help of a Scandinavian journalist when other couples throughout Europe suffer a similar fate. His investigation leads him to discover a serial killer imitating art, and announcing his arrival in different cities with a postcard. Jeffery Dean Morgan stars in this along with Famke Janssen, Cush Jumbo, Joachim Król, Steven Mackintosh, and Dennis O'Hare. This looks considerably better than expected, but also looks like most other serial killer mystery thrillers. "It all makes horrible twisted sense..."
