It’s not that we haven’t seen Emily Watson on screen recently — it just feels a long time since any film really made us look at her. Somehow knowing and guileless and haunted at once, her piercing, pale-eyed gaze made an immediate mark in film history with her debut in “Breaking the Waves” a quarter-century ago, but it’s been an underused natural resource of late: TV has been more generous, but the movies have confined her to stock mom-and-wife supporting roles for years. She’s a mom and wife again in “God’s Creatures,” an unexpected pivot of a sophomore feature from American duo Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer. The difference is a film with an acute interest in sidelined mothers, wives and women in general, and the result is Watson’s meatiest, most compelling showcase in an age.

Few songs have felt as monumental in 21st century pop music as Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” The song and its iconic music video served as year-defining material from Queen Bey, and it still holds up among the singer’s classic songs. Of the many awards it won, “Single Ladies” notably gave Beyoncé her first — and so far only — general field win at the Grammys: Song of the Year. But how exactly did it win, and was it the slam dunk that in hindsight we might think it was?
“Single Ladies” didn’t take much time to take off, reaching the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 just a month after its release. Soon after, it reached number-one, where it remained on-and-off for four weeks. The song was helped a lot by its video, which is one of Beyoncé’s most instantly recognizable with its iconic choreography and black-and-white photography.

Kendrick Lamar is back after a long hiatus. He finally announced a release date for his upcoming new studio album “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers.” It drops on May 13. It’s probably going to top the charts and earn myriad plaudits, assuming it’s on par with his previous work, but will it get him the one thing that has eluded him: the Grammy for Album of the Year?
Who knows at this point whether he even cares that much about the Grammys. In the five years since his last studio album, “Damn,” artists like Drake and The Weeknd have criticized and/or boycotted the awards due to sketchy voting practices and Recording Academy biases against Black artists, especially in hip-hop. But it’s nevertheless the most widely recognized award voted on by industry peers, and Lamar’s continued snubs in the all-genre general field categories have been emblematic...

Few albums have had the legacy that Lauryn Hill’s solo debut record, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” has had. The critically acclaimed yet also commercially dominant record established Hill as one of the leading creatives of her time and is a milestone in music-making, especially for hip-hop and soul. “Miseducation” is also one of the few albums to be certified diamond in the United States, and the first by a female hip-hop artist to do so. And of course, to add to its innumerable list of honors, it won Album of the Year at the Grammys, along with four other awards. Watch her accept the top prize above.

Organizers behind the Oscars are pulling out all the stops to land an iconic performance from best original song nominee Beyoncé, multiple sources close to the show told Variety.
While the superstar made nary an awards campaign stop over the past months in support of her track “Be Alive,” co-written with artist Dixson for the film “King Richard,” Beyoncé’s camp has been in deep talks with producers to mount a satellite performance of the song — one that would possibly open the show, and broadcast live from tennis courts in Compton, Calif. The concept began solidifying last Monday, three individuals with knowledge of the talks said.
The location, of course, is where sports legends Venus and Serena practiced relentless drills in their youth under the watchful eye of their father, Richard. One possible scenario would have Will Smith, who plays the titular character in the film, appear onsite with Beyoncé...

For two days at Stubb’s BBQ, some of the hottest names in contemporary rap and hip-hop made their presence felt at SXSW. Babyface Ray, Jasiah, Guapo, BillyRacxx and Sheck Wes all made dramatic appearances at RapTV’s Rolling Loud weekend showcase. But it was Saturday’s headliner Don Toliver — a Houston native still riding high on last year’s Life of a Don — who arguably did the most with his allotted time onstage.

The world of "Free Guy" is familiar to anyone who's played or ever seen a video game. The attention to detail, the pace of action, characters and life in a game, it's striking how close Shawn Levy's movie is to the experience of gameplay. Production designer Ethan Tobman, who worked on "Lemonade" and the "All the Stars" video, is one of the artists responsible for bringing the original environment to life.

Beyonce has been keeping a low musical profile over the past few months, but she’s breaking cover with a new song, “Be Alive,” featured in the new trailer for “King Richard,” the Will Smith-starring biopic on the rise of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams from the perspective of their father, Richard (played by Smith).
The song, which plays throughout the second half of the trailer, is an orchestra-laden anthem, with a powerful vocal by Beyonce. “It feels so good to be alive, that’s why I live my life with pride,” backing singers intone while Beyonce soars over the music — “Do you know how much we have pride / How hard we have to try?”

Kacey Musgraves is one of the Grammys’ favorite country artists of the past decade, but not this year — at least not in country categories. Her new album “Star-Crossed” was submitted for Best Country Album, but as was reported by Billboard, the academy’s genre screening committee has deemed it a pop album, where she might join another pop-country crossover act, Taylor Swift (“Evermore“). Do you think that will help or hurt her awards chances?

HBO’s Lovecraft Country earned 18 Emmy nominations this season including Outstanding Drama Series. Based on the Matt Ruff novels of the same name, the series is set in 1950s Jim Crow America where Atticus (Jonathan Majors) searches for his missing father with his childhood friend Leti (Jurnee Smollett) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. One of the big surprises at last month’s BET Awards was hearing Jazmine Sullivan’s “Heaux Tales” announced as the Album of the Year. The album certainly has the acclaim to merit the title, but the category often goes to higher-profile albums, with past winners including Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” and Roddy Ricch’s “Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial.” So it seemed like The Weeknd’s “After Hours” or Megan Thee Stallion’s “Good News” would take home the big prize. Could this upset have implications for the Grammys? I think so.

This story about “The Story of Film: A New Generation” first appeared in TheWrap’s special digital Cannes magazine.
It’s hard to envision a more appropriate movie for the opening night of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival than Mark Cousins’ “The Story of Film: A New Generation.” The two-hour-and-40-minute documentary is a vast but idiosyncratic examination of the cinema of the 21st century, beginning with the unusual juxtaposition of Joaquin Phoenix’s stairway dance in “Joker” with the song “Let It Go” from “Frozen.” From there, the survey jumps across genres and countries, with Cousins discussing around 90 different films as he examines the way cinema has extended its language and gone in new directions over the last two decades.
But in addition to being a wry treatise on the movies of this century, the film is also a celebration of the moviegoing experience made during a time of isolation...

Even with all the havoc the coronavirus wreaked in the world, cinema could not be stopped, so why should Mark Cousins, the solicitous Irish critic-cum-tour guide whose 15-hour “The Story of Film: An Odyssey” was but a tip-of-the-iceberg survey of the medium’s infinite possibilities?
Making the most of his time in lockdown, Cousins compiled an appendix/capper to that marathon series, delivering “The Story of Film: A New Generation” on opening day of the Cannes Film Festival. This latest installment (doubtful the last) is less focused on where the medium’s been than on where it’s headed, focusing mostly on 21st-century examples, from Attenberg to Zama, that point the way forward.
At two hours and 40 minutes, it’s a longer epilogue than audiences needed perhaps, but then, no one would accuse Cousins of brevity. And for those who appreciate the director’s wide-eyed and open-hearted way of looking at cinema,...

Beyonce voiced Nala in the photo-realistic 2019 remake of “The Lion King”; “Black is King” was inspired by that film and features songs from Beyonce’s “Lion King” companion album, “The Gift.” It was already nominated for Best Music Film at the Grammys earlier this year, and it was awarded by the Art Directors Guild. Judging from Beyonce’s track record, it has a good chance at Emmy nominations too.

This story about “Lovecraft Country” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Even in a television landscape that includes close to 500 scripted series, HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” might cross more genres and eras than any other. A hearty blend of science fiction, drama, horror, romance, revisionist history and even a modicum of actual biography, this phalanx of styles would prove daunting to even the most seasoned of designers. But under the mindful guidance of showrunner Misha Green, production designer Kalina Ivanov and costume designer Dayna Pink found a way to transform it into one cohesive visual universe.
“I think that was part of the draw,” Pink said. “What if you got to add your own style to something that already exists? It gave us room to be incredibly creative.” The creativity included more than 160 sets on five soundstages and a backlot, and 4,500 costumes which,...

Scottish musical sensation Lewis Capaldi is the subject of a feature-length documentary directed by BAFTA winner Joe Pearlman (“Bros: After the Screaming Stops”) and produced by Pulse Films. The film will be shopped to buyers at the Cannes virtual market by Independent Entertainment.
The 24-year-old Capaldi has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame over the past 36 months, earning a Grammy nomination and Brit award for his debut single “Someone You Loved,” in addition to a second Brit for best new artist, and selling out an arena tour before he’d even released his debut album.
It’s a stark contrast to his life just three years ago, when he was still carrying his own gear while performing in Scottish bars and pubs. The film follows Capaldi over a five-year period, from a global headline tour to returning to his parents’ home in Scotland to start work on his sophomore album.

The 2021 Grammys sparked controversy with their nominations and snubs — par for the course for the institution, whose own former CEO Deborah Dugan alleged vote-rigging and conflicts of interests in the nominations process. But on Friday, April 30, the recording academy announced a big shakeup: all nomination review committees are gone, which has the potential to solve one of the Grammys’ biggest transparency problems.
Under the previous system, academy members at large would vote, but final nomination decisions in many categories, including the top four general field categories, were made by committees made up of 15 to 20 anonymous members. On one hand, those small panels have probably leveled the playing field for deserving acts with lower public profiles: surprise Album of the Year contenders like Brandi Carlile and Jacob Collier (“Djesse Vol. 3”) probably owe their nominations to the committees.

If Damian Gandia had to rank his three favorite installments of the Now That’s What I Call Music! franchise, it’d go: Now 10, Now 64, Now 57.
Probably.
With Now 10, it’s mainly a nostalgia thing. Even though the 14-year-old from New Jersey wasn’t born yet when it was released in 2002, the tenth installment of the long-running pop hits compilation — which starts with Britney Spears’ “Overprotected” and ends with Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me” — still brings back memories of music he heard as a kid. Beyoncé set history Sunday night at the 2021 Grammys, becoming the most Grammy-winning female artist in history and garnering more awards than any performer — male or female.
With 28 trophies, Beyoncé ties with 88-year-old producer Quicy Jones. Beyoncé earned her first Grammys in 2001 as a part of Destiny’s Child, when the group won for Best R&b Song and Best R&b Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals with “Say My Name.” She was 19 years old at the time.

Bad news, Beyoncé fans: the queen will not be gracing Grammys viewers with a performance during tonight's award show. Although Beyoncé is this year's most-nominated artist with nine nominations, the Recording Academy revealed she opted out of taking the (virtual) stage.
"It's unfortunate, because she's such a big part of the Recording Academy," interim CEO Harvey Mason Jr. told the LA Times. "We absolutely wish we had her onstage." It's unclear if Beyoncé will even make an appearance during the evening. The show's executive producer, Ben Winston, said viewers "might" find it strange if she doesn't show up.
Beyoncé last performed at the Grammys in 2017. During that same show, many believe she was snubbed when her highly acclaimed album Lemonade lost album of the year. Her choice not to perform follows a pattern set by her husband, Jay-Z, in 2018 and Kendrick Lamar in 2019. They were the most-nominated acts in their respective years,...

Although Beyoncé mentors Chloe x Halle, it turns out that Mathew Knowles is not exactly the biggest fan of the young R&b duo. Mathew, Beyoncé's father, gave a truly shocking interview to radio personality Leah A. Henry for Leah's Lemonade this week, claiming it's "insulting" to think the singers possess similar talent to his superstar daughter. It all went down toward the end of their chat, when Leah told him that a lot of fans online constantly compare Chloe Bailey to a younger Bey. "Do you see the comparison? Like the same thing that you saw in young Beyoncé, do you see that in Chloe Bailey?" she...

Beyonce has been chasing Alison Krauss at the Grammys for a while now. Krauss is the most honored woman in the awards’ history with 27 victories. On November 24, Grammy nominations day, two of the most celebrated inclusions were Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish in the general field, as well as in the pop categories. They share a big achievement: they’re the two most recent Best New Artist winners, Lipa prevailing at the 2019 ceremony, and Eilish in 2020. What might be surprising to some is that both seem to have escaped the infamous “Best New Artist curse,” a popular belief that people who win the coveted award tend to under-perform after winning, either commercially or awards-wise (or both).
In the past we’ve seen a lot of Best New Artist winners turn out to be passing fads. A good example is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who won in 2014. Their case is even starker than most because all the other nominees that year have become successful acts in the music industry and claimed Grammys after their Bna losses.

With the 2021 Grammy Award ceremony set to be on January 31, 2021, we’re excited to see what’s in store for this year’s show, especially given the current pandemic circumstances. Here are a couple of things I hope to see come next month.
SEELuke James on his Grammy nomination for ‘To Feel Love/d’ and why this album felt like his ’emancipation’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
1. Fewer performances, more awards
Listen, as much as I love those unique Grammy moments every year, do we really need that many performances? The Grammys are still, you know, an awards show, so why not give out more awards during the primetime broadcast instead of presenting almost all of them at the Premiere Ceremony that streams online earlier in the day? Maybe they can limit the performers to general field nominees (which is plenty since there are eight nominees in each of those categories), or maybe do one performance per award.

Let's get one thing straight: There is no bad Beyoncé video. Since embarking on her solo career with the release of Dangerously in Love in 2003, the former Destiny's Child frontwoman hasn't let up on the eye-popping visuals to go along with her steady stream of hits, always making sure she's upping the ante in the process. After all, this is the woman who changed the game with that digital drop—the surprise self-titled 2013 album that already had music videos filmed under an impressive cloak of secrecy. Over the years, her artistry has graduated from mere music videos to feature-length films, like Lemonade in 2016 and Black Is King in 2020, leaving fans with an...

Former Amazon Studios executive Bianca Gavin has joined “Gangs of London” producer Pulse Films as it looks to grow its scripted pipeline.
Gavin joins Pulse as head of production for scripted television and film, and will be the primary production point of contact for all projects, from development through to delivery. She will report into Jamie Hall, chief operating officer of scripted television and film, who joined the outfit in 2016.
The appointment comes as the London-headquartered Pulse — once best known for rock docs on LCD Soundsystem and the Beastie Boys, music videos such as Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” and documentaries like “Xy Chelsea” and “Bikram” — continues to expand into the scripted arena. The “American Honey” producer, overseen by co-founders Thomas Benski and Marisa Clifford, made a major foray into television this year with AMC and Sky’s “Gangs of London.”
Gavin most recently served as senior production executive for EU scripted originals at Amazon Studios.

It goes without saying that, for just about everyone, 2020 was a no-good, very-bad year. But for a handful of artists, it was, numbers-wise, actually a very good year indeed – the year they rose from obscurity to stardom, all without leaving their homes.
