An interesting look at a reluctant hero.
planktonrules15 April 2016
Considering what he did, it is very interesting that I haven't noticed a biography about Neil Armstrong before seeing this episode of "Nova". Some of this might be because Armstrong avoided the spotlight and some might be because the space race has long been over...sort of a case of out of sight, out of mind.

The film covers Armstrong's entire life, not just the moon landing. It features interviews with friends, family and a few experts and they all paint a portrait of a very hardworking man who seemed to excel at everything. Yet, following the moon landing, he pulled away from interviews and limited his exposure to the public...most likely because there was a part of him that enjoyed his privacy.

Overall, this is well made and worth seeing.

How do you top walking on the Moon?
ballcw-498-60280810 December 2014
Neil Armstrong faced his greatest challenge after returning from the Moon. His 1969 lunar landing was risky, but all of his NASA training couldn't prepare the Ohio native for the intense media spotlight that followed. Everyone wanted to shake the hand of the first person to set foot on the Moon. It was too much, and the humble hero retreated into academia. Armstrong died in 2012 at 82. This revealing Dec. 3, 2014, episode of the PBS series "Nova" shows how he spent the second half of his life unable to top that one small step.

Fitting summary of the life of a remarkable man.

Warning: Spoilers
I was a teenager in the 1960s when the Space Program got its jumpstart to get to the moon. I was a married young adult in 1969, just out of Purdue Graduate school, when Neil A. Armstrong made that landing and then the first steps on the moon. I remember it all, like the rest of the world I was in awe.

Only later did I realize my connection to Armstrong, both of us are from small communities and both of us decided to go to Purdue. Now I think that he and I walked the same walkways on campus and had classes in some of the same classrooms, just a few years apart. But he got to the moon and I didn't!

This 53-minute NOVA presentation is really great. Just long enough to cover his life but not so long as to get boring.

The documentary was made after Armstrong's sudden death following heart surgery in 2012. He had just turned 82. It features many film clips over the years plus some audio tape recordings of Neil himself. Many of the contributors are friends and family, including Neil's sons.

Two things stand out to me. An accomplished test pilot, one of the best ever, he understood the dangers and never got scared, even after a very close call. He had a job to do and he was there to do it.

The second was what his closest friends say, what everybody saw was the real Neil Armstrong, he was exactly who he seemed to be.
