Years after "The Sopranos" started what we consider the Peak TV era, there came a show that changed network TV forever: "Lost." It's a show that is as controversial as it is influential, one that helped bring serialization to mainstream TV, make the showrunner as recognizable among TV obsessives as the actors on screen, and delivered one of the most controversial endings in history (though it is a perfect send-off for the show).

Prime Video has unveiled the official trailer for the documentary film Frida, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival a few months back. Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol Box Office Battle With Ajay Devgn & Kajol’s Box Office Has Surprising Result! ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Bollywood fans and their affection towards certain on-screen pairs has been phenomenal. Be it the greatest pair of all time – Raj Kapoor & Nargis or Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. Or be it the greatest pair of the 90s, Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol, or the one film wonder – Salman Khan & Aishwarya Rai. Be it today’s best, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, or Varun Dhawan & Alia Bhatt. Be it the unconventional pair of Ajay Devgn & Tabu or the short-lived pair of Hrithik Roshan & Kareena Kapoor Khan. All of them are usually compared with their real-life couples, and the ones who have borne the brunt of this unfair comparison throughout their careers have been Ajay Devgn & Kajol.
The on-screen turned off-screen couple and their chemistry have always been pitted against Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

Last night’s Grammys was a night of predictable winners, surprise appearances and even an arrest.
While Phoebe Bridgers was the big winner with four awards, it was Taylor Swift who took home Album of the Year (Midnights), making her the only artist to win the award four times. This honor was given by Celine Dion, in a shocking appearance considering her 2022 diagnosis of stiff person syndrome, leaving her unable to perform. After a standing ovation, she told the crowd, “Thank you, all! I love you right back…You look beautiful. When I say I’m happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart. It’s almost impossible to classify In & Of Itself, the one-man off-Broadway show that’s now an acclaimed movie on Hulu, and that’s kind of the point. Its star, Derek DelGaudio, is a magician of unusual skill, but the show, built around true stories from his life, employs illusion only in the service of a complex, often unsettling, nearly hypnotic exploration of human identity that tends to leave audiences in tears, even the ones watching at home. For Frank Oz, 76, who directed both the stage and screen versions of the show,...

Things have been pretty quiet on the movie front for a while, given the pandemic, but this weekend marks a major upswing in content for cinema lovers, with multiple brand new releases available. Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island is unfortunately not up for streaming at present, but Netflix Original Da 5 Bloods, the latest effort from the Oscar-winning Spike Lee, is. For family audiences, there’s also Artemis Fowl over on Disney Plus, which was originally set for a theatrical release back in May.
Even outside of these new films though, there’s plenty of fresh titles coming to the various streaming services this weekend, from classic movies, recent hits, new TV series, old TV series, etc. Whatever combination of services you’re subscribed to, you can fill your whole weekend watching what’s coming to Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon, HBO Max and the rest over the next few days.

One hundred seventy features have been submitted for consideration in the Documentary Feature category for the 90th Academy Awards. That’s 25 more than 2016. Assuming they all book their qualifying runs in New York and Los Angeles, the members of the documentary branch have just a few more weeks to see as many films as possible and file their votes for the shortlist of 15 to be announced in December. They’re each supposed to watch an assigned list of about 20 films, plus as many more as they can.

It’s sublime. This new documentary about film scores is exactly that. It’s opportunity of a distinctive kind…the chance to explore what film score composers think, know, believe, feel and do to create the music of the films we love. The documentary gathers together the elite of the Hollywood film world, including directors, producers and composers, to provide observations about the role music has in creating iconic films. Though professional musicians know much about the technical aspects of composing and performing music specifically made for films, the process is mysterious for non-musicians. We know that we react emotionally to visual images,

Things are looking up at the specialty box office as two festival hits, Sundance breakout “The Big Sick” (Amazon/Lionsgate) and Sofia Coppola’s Cannes director-winner “The Beguiled” (Focus Features) both beat all the 2017 limited openings to date. With $87,000 and $60,000 per theater averages respectively, they both accomplished something only one platform film (“Cafe Society”) achieved all last summer. And they did so the same weekend in some of the same theaters.
This shows that core specialty audiences are starving for cinematic nourishment they aren’t getting from mainstream studio fare.
The two new films join “Beatriz at Dinner” (Roadside Attractions), which expanded well in its third week. A box office rebound for specialized non-mass-audience film is finally under way.

For the last eight-or-so months, Matt Schrader's Score: A Film Music Documentary has been shown at festivals worldwide, and has won itself a nice set of awards while travelling. We hear composers, directors, and film critics give their opinion on the subject, and we're talking Big Big names here. Check out the trailer below to get a glimpse of what Matt Schrader has done. The role of film composer is a crucial yet relatively uncelebrated one—this despite a movie’s score often doing 90 percent of the emotional lifting. (For proof of its importance, look no further than all those popular “melodica” covers on YouTube.) As gushingly expressed by director James Cameron near the beginning of Score: A Film Music Documentary, it’s “the heart and soul of the film,” absolutely essential to a movie’s success, and a subject deserving of a spotlight bigger than an annual Academy Awards montage. And so first-time director Matt Schrader aims to rescue this often overlooked world of film music from the background, primarily by yakking over it.
Part history lesson, part educational film, part time-killer for tourists at Universal Studios (right down to the requisite filler blather from Leonard Maltin), Score is a loving tribute that approaches its subject with a hooray-for-Hollywood reverence that people ...

Here at Et, we're obsessed with a lot of things -- and for the week of June 12 to June 16, this is what we're most excited about:
Why We're Obsessed With 'Rough Night'
The film is already being compared to The Hangover -- minus Alan's debauchery -- centering around a bachelorette party weekend that goes awry when a male stripper ends up dead in the beach house that Jess (Scarlett Johansson) and her friends -- played by Kate McKinnon, Zoe Kravitz, Jillian Bell and Ilana Glazer -- are staying at in Miami. While the movie doesn't open with all the women hungover, trying to retrace their steps, it does, however, highlight what happens when a wild bachelorette weekend takes some hilariously unexpected turns, ultimately bringing this group of gals closer together when it matters most. Et caught up with Johansson earlier this year, where the actress spoke candidly about the comedy. "It's wrong in...

One of the most memorable aspects of movies are their scores. From the menacing strings in “Jaws” to the instantly recognizable “Star Wars” theme, music alone can conjure to mind our favorite heroes and our greatest heartbreaks on the big screen. But what makes this music so memorable?

May kicked off the summer movie season, but June brings some studio tentpoles actually worth seeing (yes, we didn’t like that one everyone else did last month). Along with popcorn entertainment, there’s some of the finest independent films of the year, ranging from a long-delayed final feature from a late master to Sundance favorites and more. We should also note that, despite getting a release last year, IFC seems to be putting the Palme d’Or-winning I, Daniel Blake back in theaters this week, and we recommend seeking it out if you missed it.

Summer is upon us. That is, summer as defined by movie studios which, in the 40 years since Star Wars was released, on May 25, 1977, have valiantly tried to stretch the boundaries of summer, content-wise, from the traditional June-July-August definition to include the other nine months of the year as well. (Mission pretty much accomplished, gentlemen. Thank you for your efforts.) As far as the actual summer movie season, it’s now more or less accepted that everything starts on the first weekend of May, and so it most certainly is this year. In case you hadn’t heard, a modest little picture called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuts this weekend at an art house near you, and everyone you know, including you, have probably already bought advance tickets to see it. Me, I’m less similarly inclined. Despite my raised expectations from reviews and audience reports, I found the...

We’ve always had a particular love for film music here at The Playlist. Indeed, when we started as a lowly destination on Blogspot way back when, the site had a particular focus on film scores and soundtracks, and while our scope has expanded since then, we still love to look at the ways movies and music intersect. So as such, we’re very excited to check out the new film “Score: A Film Music Documentary.”

If you’ve watched TV in the past 10 years, chances are you know Bear McCreary’s music. He’s become one of the most (if not the most) sought-after and prolific composers in television, ever since he came into his own writing the boundary-pushing score for the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. He counts The Walking Dead, Outlander, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. among his credits. And this March theater-goers got to experience his music with a big screen presentation; he composed the chilling and thrilling score for J.J. Abrams’ 10 Cloverfield Lane. Today McCreary is juggling so many projects that he can’t count all his current TV shows and movies and video games — “I can’t even tell. I honestly don’t even know,” how many projects he’s in the midst of, he said during an interview at Cafe Laurent in Culver City, CA. The...
