Reyna Roberts is a study in contrasts in her assertive new song “Raised Right.” The Alabama native released the country-rock anthem on Friday and it follows her 2020 single “Stompin’ Grounds.”
Built around a handclap rhythm and swampy guitar lick, “Raised Right” has Roberts outlining some fundamentals of her upbringing. “At your worst, be on your best/Do unto others like the good lord says,” she sings, waiting a beat before she adds, “Unless you cross me or my girlfriends.”

Remember that bit from the Golden Globes a few years ago, when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler joked that Julia Louis-Dreyfus was too good for her TV friend after she'd been nominated in one of the show's film categories? Well, get Allison Janney an e-cig, because she's a crossover nominee now.
Janney has been Golden Globe-nominated five times already (four times for The West Wing and once for CBS's Mom) but her Best Supporting Actress nomination for I, Tonya marks her first for a film. (I, Tonya was also nominated for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical and Margot Robbie for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.) Et spoke with Janney shortly after the nominations were announced to discuss how she would be celebrating, staging a The Help reunion at the Globes and meeting the real Tonya Harding.

Every year, the studios take their best genre successes and try to push them beyond the technical ghetto. Oscar campaigners want to convince critics, guilds, and Oscar voters that their movie rises to the level of art. But it’s rare for fantasy, horror, thriller, action or comic-book movies to pass over to the Best Picture side.
When they do, it tends to be an exception like Peter Jackson’s fantasy trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. All three films scored Best Picture nominations and technical wins: “Fellowship” scored 13 nominations and wins for Makeup, Visual Effects, and Cinematography; “The Two Towers” earned six and won Sound Editing and VFX; and then came the ultimate triumph for the finale “The Return of the King”: a grand sweep of all 11 nominations including Best Picture. But while “Lotr” fell into the fantasy genre, it was boosted by the literary pedigree of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Fear not, David Fincher fanatics, the “Mindhunter” interrogations will continue. Netflix announced via Instagram and Twitter on Thursday that its critically-acclaimed crime drama has been renewed for a second season less than two months after it bowed on the streaming service. The Joe Penhall-created series stars Jonathan Groff (“Looking”), Holt McCallany (“Sully”), Anna Torv (“Fringe”), Hannah Gross (“Unless”) and new kid on the block Cameron Britton, who took on the role of serial killer Ed Kemper to rave reviews. I'm currently in the middle of watching David Fincher's Netflix series Mindhunter and it's one hell of a great show and absolutely fascinating. The story follows a couple of FBI agents in 1977 who are studying the minds of serial killers so that they help catch them faster because, “How do we get ahead of crazy if we don’t know how crazy thinks?”
The series is based on the 1996 nonfiction novel by Mark Olshaker and John Douglas‘ called "Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit." Even though it's a mostly fictionalized series, it is inspired by real-life events.
Thanks to series composer Jason Hill, we've learned what Season 2 is going to focus on. While talking to Billboard, he revealed that the second season will examine the Atlanta child murders. If you're not familiar with this tragic event it was a string of 28 murders, mostly children and adolescents,...

In Mindhunter, FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) study the damaged psyches of serial killers in an attempt to understand and catch them, and in the process pioneer the development of modern serial killer profiling.
How do we get ahead of crazy if we don’t know how crazy thinks? Two FBI agents (Jonathan Groff & Holt McCallany) set out on a sinister investigative odyssey to discover the brutal answers in Mindhunter
The series is directed by David Fincher (Gone Girl, Zodiac), Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna), Tobias Lindholm (A War, A Hijacking) and Andrew Douglas (The Amityville Horror, U Want Me 2 Kill Him?). Fincher, Joshua Donen (Gone Girl, The Quick and the Dead), Charlize Theron (Girlboss, Hatfields & McCoys) and Cean Chaffin (Gone Girl, Fight Club) are Executive Producers. The show also stars Anna Torv (Fringe) and Hannah Gross (Unless).
Mindhunter launches globally October 13th on Netflix.

Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for David Fincher's upcoming series Mindhunter. The series is set in 1979 and it follows two FBI agents, Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), who are trying to understand the mindset of serial killers.
In this teaser, right before Holden goes to meet with a serial killer, Bill scares the shit out of him when telling him what will happen if he brings a gun into the room with him when meeting with the killer. He tells him that the killer will take the gun, kill him, and then have sex with his face. It's a very dark kind of humor, which is something that Fincher is great at.
The series is an adaptation of the 1996 nonfiction novel by Mark Olshaker and John Douglas‘ called "Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit." I've provided a description of that book below the teaser.

While the concept behind director David Fincher's Mindhunter sounds amazing, the first trailer left a bit to be desired in terms of content. This new trailer satisfies the group who thought this show could be a snooze fest while still quelling expectations that this is a series about analyzing serial killers as opposed to following serial killers. Take a look:

Welp, my wife just rage-quit. You see, things got pretty nasty this week in Fargo, no one is spared their misery -- granted, some fared worse than others. At the halfway point we're no closer to realizing the actual plot of this season, which may actually involve no plot at all. It's entirely possible that Fargo Season 3 is some kind of social studies test invented by creator Noah Hawley, to see how far he can push his audience and assess what they're willing to endure in the name of mid-week entertainment. Alas, my wife says, "no más," so I'm on my own from here on out.
We open on a lovely scene of blackmail via sex tape -- its 2010, the height of such idiocy in America. A package left at the Stussy doorstep, marked for Emmit's "eyes only," but Mrs. Stussy (Linda Kash) returns home early, opens the package, and plays the tape.

It’s been a year in the making, and the controversy has been intense, but finally, Secret Empire #1 is here to take the world by storm. Over on Twitter, Nick Spencer’s summed up his story pretty well:
I watched Rogue One about a bajillion times to capture that vibe- a dark war story, but still with some humor and character chemistry.
— Nick Spencer (@nickspencer) April 26, 2017
He’s right. To extend that analogy, Captain America and Hydra have become the Empire – and they truly have taken over the Marvel Universe. The heroes we know and love? They’re relegated to a resistance movement – rebels by any other name.
In an age where there are far too many comic book events, Secret Empire #1 stands as the masterclass in how to do it right. This first issue sets the scene,...

With ResurrXion now underway and Secret Empire being right around the corner, it comes as no surprise that certain Marvel titles are selling like hotcakes. As such, recent key releases such as X-Men: Prime #1, Captain America: Steve Rogers #15 and America #2 are set to receive second printings sometime in May.
First let’s talk a little about X-Men: Prime #1, a one-shot that brought together some of the top creators working on the current crop of titles focused on mutants that officially kicked off the bold new ResurrXion era. Quite frankly, this is the one that least surprises me when it comes to second printings to be discussed today. It’s no wonder that we gave it a five-star review, which you can check out here.
Moving on, it’s no big shocker that Captain America...

The cast of Mindhunter should drag you in.
Director and producer David Fincher (Gone Girl, The Social Network, Zodiac) should drag you in.
The subject matter Will drag you in.
If we've learned nothing after the countless number of programming hours on television dedicated to the hunt of serial killers, we are absolutely fascinated by them.
Our first look at the upcoming series Mindhunter from Netflix is filled with quotable phrases indicating the 1979 FBI might get in a little over their heads in their hunt for the worst of the worst.
While the chit chat starts out from the familiar voice of Anna Torv (Fringe), it continues with words from Holt McCallanay (Sully).
He sounds like he's warning a man who might be the greenest and most excited of the bunch.
His attitude is going to bite him in the ass. He thinks it's his job electrocute them not commiserate with them.

Natalie Portman stars as Jackie Kennedy in the week after the assassination of her husband, the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Stories of great heists start with a bang and end with a whimper. But in Masterminds, a comedy based on the true story theft of an armored vehicle by incompetent robbers to the tune of $17 million, it begins with the usual plot devices: a voice over narrator, slow-motion shots for comedic effect, and a girl. And it closes not with a whimper but with title cards, pictures of the real life baddies, and comedic outtakes for good measure. Hollywood has done another of its numbers on a middling tale, and not in a good way.

A mystery lies at the shattered core of “Unless,” but it’s not your standard whodunit. Instead, the drama centers on what has caused a college student who argues with her professor over “Madame Bovary” to change into an unspeaking woman begging on the street of the Toronto winter in less than a month. Based on the final novel from author Carol Shields, this quiet Canadian-Irish film wears its heart and its literary roots on its nubby, woolen sleeve.

This year, 24 producers attended the event, taking part in a series of meetings, talks and sessions on funding and how to approach international co-productions. “Sometimes producers find it difficult to think of new...

"How did this part of the story happen?" The first trailer has debuted for an indie drama called Unless, adapted from Carol Shields' novel of the same name. The story is about a successful, usually happy writer who struggles with her daughter's choice to drop out of college and live on the streets. Catherine Keener stars, along with Hannah Gross as her daughter Norah living on the streets. The full cast includes Matt Craven, Chloe Rose, Abigail Winter, Brendan Coyle and Hanna Schygulla. The film will premiere at Tiff this fall, which is a good sign this might have something to it. It looks quite emotional and heartfelt. Here's the first official trailer for Alan Gilsenan's Unless, direct from YouTube: Reta Winters has many reasons to be happy. Then, suddenly, all the quiet satisfactions of her well-lived life disappear in a moment: her eldest daughter Norah inexplicably drops...

The Toronto International Film Festival continues to roll out the exciting programming announcements as the film-loving world looks forward to this start of this year’s festival (just next month!). The latest slate addition comes care of Tiff’s Platform section, which aims to present an “artistically stimulating and thought-provoking lineup.” The directors-focused section is only in its second year, but has already lined up a stellar spread of features from around the world, including Canada, Australia, France, Bhutan, Belgium, USA, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
Per the festival, this year Platform is aiming to take on “complex and bold narratives that range from a dark, twisted fantasy, a dramatic crime thriller, an existential illusion to the reinterpretation of a satirical tragedy, a raw coming-of-age story, and tales of revolutions, radicals, and revenge.” The section will open with the international premiere of the drama “Nocturama” from critically acclaimed director-writer Bertrand Bonello.

Canadian writer Carol Shields wrote numerous novels, short stories, and plays throughout her lifetime. She won many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for her 1993 novel “The Stone Diaries.” Now, her final novel “Unless” has been adapted into a film starring Catherine Keener. Written and directed by Alan Gilsenan, the film follows Reta (Keener), a successful writer who struggles with her daughter Norah’s (Hannah Gross) decision to drop out of college and live on the streets as a mute in some form of protest. “Unless” also stars Brendan Coyle (“Downton Abbey”), Matt Craven (“X-Men: First Class”), Chloe Rose (“The Lesser Blessed”), Hanna Schygulla (“Berlin Alexanderplatz”), and more. Watch the trailer for the film below.

What if you just walked away from your life and completely started over? What if you walked away from that new life and started over again? What if you did that again and again and again? That’s the premise of Joshua Marston’s new romantic identity drama “Complete Unknown,” starring Rachel Weisz as a woman who constantly reinvents herself and soon brings an ex-lover Tom (Michael Shannon) into her manufactured world.

Remember the “Dark Knight Rises” teaser? Sure you do — it was better than the movie itself. At barely 90 seconds long, it offered little in the way of actual footage from the film but made every frame count: Commissioner Gordon beseeching Batman to return to Gotham; the briefest glimpse of Bane; those ominous chants rumbling from the background that apparently translate to “rise.” It was a model for all other such ads, and one that yesterday’s look at Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” brings to mind.
Set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival early next month, the “Sicario” director’s latest is about an extraterrestrial species that visits earth for reasons unknown. Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker have to make their way into the aliens’ spacecraft and…well, it’s difficult to say after that, because the minute-long teaser doesn’t actually tell us — which is as it should be.

The Toronto International Film Festival — aka Tiff — has announced its first round of picks for this year’s festival, including Galas and Special Presentations, along with the festival’s opening night selection, Antoine Fuqua’s “The Magnificent Seven,” and their closing night pick, Kelly Fremon Craig’s feature directorial debut “The Edge of Seventeen.” Filled with early awards contenders, returning filmmakers and favorites from other festivals from around the globe, it’s a meaty selection of offerings that firmly announces the imminent arrival of the cinematic bonanza otherwise known as the fall festival season.
There are plenty of familiar faces here, including Denis Villeneuve, who will be bringing his “Arrival” to the same festival that has also screened his “Sicario” and “Prisoners” in previous years. The year after debuting his “Being Charlie” at Tiff, director Rob Reiner will return with his Woody Harrelson-starring biopic “Lbj.” Lone Scherfig, who has...

On Thursday, July 14, the Television Academy will announce the nominees for the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, and we have all the faith in the world they’ll get every single choice just right.
Ok, maybe they won’t, but only because the 19,000-plus voters literally can’t get every choice right. Unless all the categories squeeze out miraculous ties resulting in extra nominees — similar to last year’s Comedy Supporting Actress category — there are simply too many outstanding series and performers to fit on the overall ballot.
So our choices below not only represent IndieWire’s highest recommendations in the top-line limited series and movie categories, but also some of the shows and performers overlooked thus far in the campaign season. On a related note, category placement is determined, aptly, by our own wishes and not the submission guidelines of the TV Academy. It would be grand to hear...

Synopsis: Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability when the actions of the Avengers lead to collateral damage. The new status quo deeply divides members of the team. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) sharply disagrees and supports oversight. As the debate escalates into an all-out feud, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) must pick a side.
Exhale. Since announcing the third chapter in Captain America's trilogy would be Civil War, the nights have been long. That may seem extreme, but the exhale is one of satisfaction. Captain America: Civil War is just as good as everyone wanted it to be. Do you know how rare that is? Unless we're talking about a Uwe Boll film (ugh), the last time it happened was The Dark Knight. With one superhero battle out of the way in "Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice," it's onto the others. Later this summer we'll watch mutants mix it up in "X-Men: Apocalypse," but first will be "Captain America: Civil War." And Marvel and Disney are feeling so confident about the movie, they're ready to show it to industry types early. Really early. Screen Daily reports that "Captain America: Civil War" will screen at CinemaCon on April 13th, well in advance of its U.K. release date on April 29th, and U.S. debut on May 6th. But don't even think of getting in. Unless you're an industry person covering the convention, you're not seeing it, so most of us will have to wait along with everyone else. But those lucky enough to see it early will get the first taste of Bucky and Steve Rogers' reformed friendship. “Bucky was always...
