Netflix’s big feature release this month is the animated film Orion and the Dark, which debuts Feb. 2. Written by Charlie Kaufman, the celebrated scribe behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation, the film is an adaptation of Emma Yarlett’s children’s book about an anxious kid who is scared of the dark. Jeffrey Donovan will not be returning as Detective Cosgrove for Season 23 of “Law & Order,” Variety has confirmed.
According to TVLine, who was first to report the news, producers are already on the search for a new series regular. The outlet reports sources claim the two parted ways due to creative differences.
Donovan joined the cast in 2021, portraying Detective Cosgrove in Seasons 21 and 22 of the series revival. Cosgrove, a junior detective, joined the NYPD team as the new partner of Det. Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson). “Frank is a tough-as-nails detective that seeks justice by whatever means necessary. Every legal drama needs a bad cop, and Donovan shines,” reads his official character description, per NBC.
Probably best known for his leading work as former CIA operative Michael Westen on the USA series “Burn Notice” for seven seasons, Donovan also gained recognition with notable roles on FX’s “Fargo” and Hulu’s “Shut Eye.

A classic rags-to-riches story lies at the heart of “For Khadija,” a softball documentary about Moroccan-born rapper French Montana, who was born to a family that immigrated to the United States when he was a child. The film, which portrays its subject as a self-made striving entrepreneur and artist, derives its story from testimonies from friends, colleagues, family and French Montana himself. As in last year’s Tupac series “Dear Mama,” the title serves as a dedication to the rapper’s mother, who raised him and his siblings alone after his father left the family. In this case, the film isn’t about her so much as it is a hagiographic telling of Montana’s rise to fame.
Khadija and assorted relatives recall Montana’s early days in Casablanca, and how the family left for America in the mid-1990s when he was about 13. The recollections are interwoven with old family photos,...

Plot: A CIA contractor (Gerard Butler) who just sabotaged an Iranian Nuclear Power Plant finds his cover blown by a whistleblower journalist. On the run, he finds himself being hunted, along with his Afghan interpreter (Navid Negahban), through hostile territory by Iranian Intelligence, the Taliban and Pakistan intelligence.
Review: Many will compare Ric Roman Waugh’s Kandahar with Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. After all, both are about Americans being hunted in Afghanistan along with their interpreters, but if you ignore how similar the premises may be, they’re actually quite different. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant was a (very good) war film, while Kandahar is more of a straightforward action flick. It’s a very tight little thriller offering further evidence that Gerard Butler makes the best mid-level action movies in the business, especially when he works with Ric Roman Waugh, arguably his best director.

Exclusive: As production on his new actioner Den of Thieves 2: Pantera continues, Christian Gudegast has been set to write and direct a new film on mixed martial artist Royce Gracie and the birth of the Ultimate Fighting Championship for frequent partner Tucker Tooley Entertainment.
The Untitled Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Project takes place on the night that Gracie proved Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as the most effective fighting style, one that would ultimately become a major component of today’s UFC mixed martial arts. It more specifically chronicles Gracie’s debut in UFC 1 on November 12, 1993, when the fighter achieved the unthinkable during the organization’s inaugural competition. This night that had him besting three competitors is considered to be that on which the UFC was born.

Gerard Butler isn’t leaving anything to risk in Open Road Films‘ new Kandahar trailer. With slick direction from Ric Roman Waugh, Kandahar finds Butler playing Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative stuck deep in hostile territory in Afghanistan. After his mission is exposed, he must fight his way out, alongside his Afghan translator, to an extraction point in Kandahar, all while avoiding elite enemy forces and foreign spies tasked with hunting them down. The Kandahar trailer will be your bag if you enjoy practical effects, explosions, widespread deception, and danger.
Navid Negahban (Homeland), Ali Fazal (Victoria & Abdul), Travis Fimmel (Vikings), and Bollywood star Elnaaz Norouzi (Sacred Games) star alongside Butler for this intense thriller co-written by Waugh and Mitchell Lafortune, based on his own experiences as a military intelligence officer during the Snowden leaks.

For his role in the hotly anticipated new drama from the creators of The Wire, Bernthal embedded himself in the Baltimore police force. He talks about his own brushes with the law, advice from Brad Pitt and how acting saved his life
Jon Bernthal goes all in. On screen, he is known for playing emotionally damaged bruisers – big on machismo, short on temper – while off it he is notorious for a deep, some might say obsessive, commitment to his roles. Extensive weapons training and periods of isolation from his family for The Punisher, intensive tennis coaching for the sports drama King Richard, Navy Seal boot camp for Fury, socialising with maximum-security prisoners for Shot Caller – whatever the part calls for, he is game. It was no different for his latest role, the corrupt Baltimore cop Wayne Jenkins.

May will satisfy “Stranger Things” fans everywhere as it delivers Netflix’s hotly-anticipated fourth season of the sci-fi thriller series hailing from the Duffer brothers. However, the streamer’s also getting rid of other shows — most notably, all six seasons of the Emmy-winning “Downton Abbey” and Seasons 1-3 of the Damon Wayans Jr.-starring sitcom “Happy Endings.”
The month will also see the removal of several films, including cult classics like Denise Richards’ erotic thriller “Wild Things” and the Zack Snyder-helmed “Sucker Punch.” “Top Gun” — the long-awaited sequel of which is coming to theaters May 27 — will also go.
Other movies leaving the platform range from horror fares (“The Final Destination” and “The Devil’s Advocate”) to family-friendly pics (“Happy Feet” and “Hairspray”).

French Montana has a knack for crafting au courant earworms that pay subtle homage to rap’s illustrious history. After cementing his rep as New York’s most in-demand mixtape maven (under the careful tutelage of ByrdGang iconoclast and self-proclaimed “wave God,” Max B), the Bronx Mc topped the charts in 2012 with “Shot Caller,” which had Ig models and dope boys bopping to the same madcap horns from Lords of the Underground’s grimy 1993 cut, “Funky Child.” It hit the streets like a gleeful tsunami — everyone wanted to ride the wave.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will star in and executive produce a series adaptation of the Christina Clancy novel “The Second Home” currently in the works at Sony’s TriStar TV, Variety has learned.
The story follows the Gordon and Shaw families beyond a fateful summer on Cape Cod. Told through two generations, the story explores how a devastating secret can derail young love, tear apart families, and change the fate of countless individuals forever if they let it. “The Second Home” was Clancy’s debut novel. It was published by St. Martin’s Press in June 2020.
No network or writer is currently attached to the series, but Coster-Waldau will executive produce along with his producing partners Joe Derrick and Jeffrey Chassen under their Ill Kippers banner.
Should the series move forward, it would mark Coster-Waldau’s first television role since “Game of Thrones” ended in 2019. He famously played Jaime Lannister throughout the megahit HBO show’s eight-season run.

Taylor and his Hidden Empire Film Group partner Robert F. Smith will executive produce the project, joining a producing team that includes civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and his company, Brooklyn Media, as well as The Hideaway Entertainment and Inde Companies.

Hold only love, only peace in your heart, knowing that the battle of good to overcome evil is already won.’ His words not only resonate with me as human, but inspire me to tell his amazing story,” Taylor said in a statement.

Greenland, a cinematic disaster epic scheduled for August, has released a trailer showcasing extinction-level devastation for humanity, whose survival—in a manner akin to many recent disaster epics—rests on the shoulders of Gerard Butler.
In the case of Greenland, Butler headlines as a man who, joined by his estranged wife (Morena Baccarin) and young son (Roger Dale Floyd), embarks on a dangerous journey to prospective safety after the planet becomes bombarded by a planet-killing comet and its scattered fragments. However, expect the apocalyptic backdrop of the film to simultaneously highlight the bravery of humanity while indicting its more unstable elements. The film’s cast also consists of Scott Glenn, David Denman, Claire Bronson, Gary Weeks and Andrew Bachelor.
With that set, check out the Greenland trailer just below.
As the official logline for Greenland fully explains of the film’s plot:
A family fights for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth.

"Just try to get to safety!" The comet is back! STX has finally followed up and officially debuted the first trailer for disaster movie Greenland, the latest from stuntman turned director Ric Roman Waugh. The apocalyptic mega disaster in this one involves a comet breaking into pieces, and these pieces striking Earth causing complete devastation. The main plot focuses on one family that must safely get to an underground bunker located in Greenland before another big piece destroys the rest of the planet. This stars Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, Scott Glenn, Andrew Bachelor, and David Denman. The first trailer debuted in April, but was pulled from the internet. This is pretty much the same trailer with a few new VFX shots added. Still looks awesome! And scary as hell... when the sky starts falling. Here's the new official trailer for Ric Roman Waugh's Greenland movie, direct from STX's YouTube: A...

Gerard Butler is set to reteam with “Greenland” and “Angel Has Fallen” director Ric Roman Waugh on action thriller “Kandahar.” CAA Media Finance is representing the film’s U.S. rights, and Capstone is handling international, and will present the project to buyers at the virtual Cannes Market.
Waugh will direct from a screenplay he wrote with former military intelligence officer Mitchell Lafortune, based on the latter’s experiences at the Defense Intelligence Agency in Afghanistan at the time of the Snowden leaks.
Butler stars as Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative working in the Middle East. An intelligence leak dangerously exposes his classified mission and reveals his covert identity. Stuck in the heart of hostile territory, Harris and his translator must fight their way out of the desert to an extraction point in Kandahar, while eluding the elite special forces hunting them.

"They got it all wrong. There's a ton of fragments! Planet killers..." Whoaaa! How about some apocalyptic disaster action to make things even scarier nowadays? The first trailer has debuted for an action movie titled Greenland, the latest from stuntman turned director Ric Roman Waugh. The plot focuses on one family that must safely get to an underground bunker located in Greenland before a big piece destroys the entire planet. Looks intense and thrilling, though now might not be the best time to release an apocalypse movie. Here's the first international trailer for Ric Roman Waugh's Greenland movie, direct from YouTube: Trailer has been removed at the request of the studio.

Exclusive: Holt McCallany’s Christmas looks like it’s coming a little early this year
The Mindhunter star is already before the cameras on the other side of the Atlantic for Guy Ritchie’s Cash Truck with Jason Statham, as Deadline revealed last month. Now I hear that the actor is joining Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Willem Defoe and Bradley Cooper in Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley.
The deal for the Buchwald, Atlas Artists and attorney Rick Genow repped McCallany to get on board with the del Toro, J. Miles Dale and Tsg Entertainment produced drama just came together.
As a part of that cast, which also includes Toni Collette and David Strathairn, McCallany will play Anderson, a get-the-job-done bruiser with more going on that is first apparent from his tough guy persona.
Based on William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel revolving around an ex-carnival con-man turned spiritualist, played by Cooper,...

Exclusive: Mindhunter star Holt McCallany has been cast as a lead opposite Jason Statham in Cash Truck. The revenge-based action thriller from Miramax reteams Statham and Guy Ritchie, who is writing and directing based on the 2004 French film Le Convoyeur. It starts shooting next month in London before moving to Los Angeles.
Statham stars as H, a cold and mysterious character working at a cash-truck company responsible for moving hundreds of millions of dollars around Los Angeles each week. Weaving through a carefully constructed narrative, the film shifts across timelines and among various characters’ perspectives.
McCallany will play Bullet, who leads the transportation team and brings aboard H, who might not be who he says he is.
As Deadline scooped earlier this month, Miramax recently acquired remake rights to the original French film from CanalPlus. Miramax CEO Bill Block and Ivan Atkinson are producing.

“Power” star Omari Hardwick is in final negotiations to lead the upcoming horror-thriller “Spell,” sources tell Variety.
Hardwick’s attachment to the Paramount Players project comes just as his hit crime drama is set to finish up with its sixth and final season.
“Spell” follows a man (Hardwick) who crashes his plane while en route to rural Appalachia with his family for a funeral and awakens to find himself totally alone and without his bearings. Relieved to be discovered by a seemingly kind elderly couple, he has no way of knowing the dark machinations that lie in wait as he is pulled deeper and deeper into a sinister world.
“Hush” (2008) and “House at the End of the Street” director Mark Tonderai will helm from a script by “Point Break” (2015) and “Total Recall” (2012) scribe Kurt Wimmer. Wimmer will also produce along with Gordon Gray, Morris Chestnut and Brian Wilkins.
“Spell” will hit theaters Aug.
