A good time indeed
ravencorinncarluk25 August 2020
This got several genuine laughs out of me, and reminded me of my LARP vampire days. Everyone seemed to be having fun, and the story and script were halfway decent.

Yes, some jokes fall flat, and there were a few tropes I thought were just kinda crammed in and the time could have been better spent elsewhere, but none of that was enough to detract from the overall spoofy enjoyment.

Also, digs at Stephenie Meyer and the crappy Twilight books will always put a smile on my face.

I had a bloody good time at house harker

I really did. When it started soooo low budget I thought for sure I'd be turning it off soon. Nope. It's hilarious. It was a fun movie. The writer and everyone involve obviously love horror. If you're looking for some humor with your horror, you won't go wrong with this movie.

Feel-good vamp movie worth watching
bxhanx6 August 2021
I love B-movies, I love indie movies, I comedy troupe movies, and I love movies that don't take themselves too seriously. This movie met all of those criteria.

That's not to say that I'm biased. If anything, I was skeptical. Usually these movies aren't worth the 90 minutes it takes to watch them. 4But, this movie doesn't get ahead of itself, and it doesn't draw out the movie for length of time (comes in around 80 minutes).

I love all horror, from Evil Dead to The Conjuring universe. It's nice to have a little comedic relief from time to time. If there has even been a "feel good vampire movie," this is it. The movie does this while paying homage to horror classics such as The Exorcist, Dracula, Evil Dead, etc.

The humor is good-natured and lighthearted. It's obvious that these guy truly enjoyed making this flick, much like The Broken Lizard crew does. It is easily with the 80 minutes needed to watch it.

I have no connection to anyone in this movie, the distributor, the studio, etc. I simply think it's a fun movie and gave it 6 stars. I will be watching it again a few more times.

I didn't have a good time.

Horror and comedy, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and in this case it just doesn't. They did try though, to be funny, but unfortunately the level of humor was very low, if not most of the time inexistant. I can count the times I laughed on one hand, the one hand I'm missing like three fingers. And for the horror part you just don't have to watch this movie because the only thing you will see is buckets of fake blood. The acting wasn't great either. I Had A Bloody Good Time At House Harker is just a wrong title because I for sure didn't have a good time. If you want to watch a funny horror show just watch Ash vs Evil Dead instead. There it's laughing guaranteed.

Please Don't!!

I personally love any kind of comedy horror, Ash VS the Evil dead is one of my altime fav. So i had hi hopes going into this movie after reading the reviews. I didn't even make it 3/4 of the way thew before simple and out loud no less saying nope not gonna happen. Only one actor in the film was worth liking and even adding in a cute girl couldn't save this film from...forgive the pun......SUCKING!!!!!

Just throwing my two sense in

Warning: Spoilers
So yah...it was a funny enough fairly low budget B comedy. IT had some quaint special effects, and the laughs at times were its crowning glories. ITs not a terrible way to spend an hour and 10 minutes. ^~^

Fails on everything it was supposed to be.
stevesutton-7495114 June 2020
I decided to watch this as I had a good rating on amazon prime. Mmmm it had a lot of interesting elements, but perhaps the thing that was missing was comedy. It's suitable for kids of about Twelve years old who still think the word 'fart' is funny. The premise of the movie was reasonable, but it failed in humour, pacing, and horror. An atrocious waste of time and money.

The Title Is Not Wrong
genderarm19 April 2018
I did have a bloody good time, in both senses of the word. This gorefest is a horror fan's delight. Its references will keep you entertained, but you'll stay for the witty one-liners and endless fountains of blood.

The movie begins in the early 20th century where Dracula leaves off. The Harkers move to America to escape their past. Of course, as with any past, it follows and we end up in the present day with three siblings, descendants of Mina and Jonathan, about to lose the family homestead.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by this movie. From the first 15 minutes or so I thought I might be sitting through yet another adolescent boy fantasy. But as with any decent adolescent, the movie soon stars to grow up. That doesn't mean it's not still funny and disgusting. But the movies central theme-the bonds of family and friends-begins to shine through, creating a Cairo-blood, red filter of kinship.

If you are the type of horror fan that gets their comedy straight from your horror movies, or the type that enjoys the odd horror comedy, you're going to love this movie.

And if anyone involved is reading, I'd love to see a sequel.

Watchable, but just barely.
eightman-067887 July 2022
I would call this an average low budget comedy horror. The plot was ok. The acting was actually pretty solid. The gags were weak and the writing was fair. I almost gave it a 5. It got a 4 because it felt like lazy writing.

Warms up

A beatdown family hires an actor to play the very vampire that the family is eschewed for. He's damn good at his job. This movie is cute n sweet with just the right amount of violent vampire gore. It's not guffaw funny - much, but it does get pretty good as we near the violent ending.

I Wish I'd Had a Bloody Good Time at House Harker
soulcrisis282 August 2021
Oh Lord where do I start. I generally like horror/comedies as long as they're done right. Ash Vs Evil Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. In fact, if you haven't seen that, skip this and go watch that instead, way way funnier and all around better.

So, characters, all annoying all terrible, especially Ned who is obsessed with the other main guys sister. Not in a cute puppy way but a sick, disturbing, creepy way. It's not funny, it's just annoying. The mentally challenged guy, again, not done well, not funny. It's just all around bad.

The story had potential, it was kind of unique and had its own little originality going but, the bad characters and lack of comedy ruined that. There's nothing worse than trying to be funny and failing miserably at it and not being funny. It's just really really bad.

I'm gonna do my best to suffer through this and see if the horror part measures up, I don't have high hopes.

P. S. So, it gained a little traction when they started fighting the vampires, but not enough to write home about and change the overall outlook of the movie. Still a skipper.

I also had a bloody good time
kosmasp21 April 2017
The movie is really not taking itself serious. The movie is very silly but has a lot of heart. It's tough to tell if this will resonate with you or not. If you can just relax and sit back and just enjoy this ride, do it. I watched it at a Festival, so I got the reaction from others too (was very well received), so try to watch it with friends.

8 may a bit high, but I do recognize it when a movie succeeds in being go silly. That's a lot tougher to do than some may imagine. Also the "acting" is good at being bad, the relationships between the characters is plausible and the "story" flows along nicely. Likable, down to earth madness, that is over the top with its humor ...

Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER ALERT: Very funny and well made for such a low budget but how would this ending sound? - Charlie planned the whole thing since the time he touched the skull and realized that it still held life since he was a child. ??

Goofy genre fun, made with surprising care
I_Ailurophile11 October 2021
Horror-comedies can inhabit a wide range of spaces, and this is definitely of the most unserious variety. It's pointedly blunt and over the top, emphasized with stylized split-screen, consciously overdone music, multiple flashbacks, and excessive sprays of blood. Greatly exaggerated personalities, heightened character drama filled with tropes, sight gags, purposefully hackneyed dialogue, and an unequivocal twist on a classic scenario paint this as illustrating the most absurd side of the genre. I had somewhat mixed expectations, but honestly, 'I had a bloody good time at House Harker' is aptly titled: This is a lot of fun!

The effects look great and are cheekily amusing, including a substantial amount of blood. Work by the makeup artists is outstanding - both the deep red that adorns the chief cast as the bloodbath begins, and the carefully considered appearance of the vampires. For that matter, the supporting cast are wonderful as they lean into the chewing of scenery allowed by the creature feature format.

And the primary cast is superb; these are comedic roles, but the characters are recognizably different from one another, written more solidly than I'd usually anticipate from such a film - and the assembled actors slip into their parts readily. Whitney Moore especially stands out; as Paige is a more serious-minded foil to her siblings and friends, Moore adopts a sardonic strength of personality on top of her natural charm and wit, and she's a joy to watch. Arlan Godthaab is also a highlight as the Harker's senior citizen neighbor Walter, bringing a great conviviality to a man of hidden depths. Of course this isn't to count out Noel Carroll, Jacob Givens, or Derek Haugen, giving Charlie, Gerry, and Ned great life while playing up each figure's peculiarities.

It's not just the characters; the writing is strong generally. Yes, this is a silly romp, but it's a romp that's crafted with great love. The overall narrative is swell, and individual scenes are written and executed with a deft hand and fine detail. Dialogue is perhaps a bit too much at times, but it's all in the spirit of having a good time, so without a particular glaring fault, it's hard to nitpick.

I don't think there's a great deal more to say. This picture plays in a familiar space, and is unlikely to be recalled as an essential classic, but nor does it carry any pretense otherwise. It has no aim but gory, ridiculous, horror-flavored entertainment, and in that it handily succeedswith some good laughs while unquestionably being a film all its own. Viewers who don't generally care for horror-comedies won't find anything to change their mind here, but if you want a funny, bombastic take on the vampire genre, this is very much worth checking out. 'I had a bloody good time at House Harker' is clever, lively, and highly enjoyable, and gets my strong recommendation.

Pretty funny for what it was.

Imagine if Edgar Wright made a vampire movie with a tiny budget. It's along those lines. There were bits that were very reminiscent of Shaun of the Dead, and The World's End. It was more fun than I expected.

I live for this!
parkdobson22 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A more light hearted take on the genre, skewering modern fascination with vampires while simultaneously keeping a humorous and upbeat tempo to the whole thing. This is in the same niche spot as things like Dead and Breakfast.

There are tons of jokes. Many fall flat. But sometimes you just can't make everyone laugh. Enjoy it for what it is, late-night horror-comedy fueled by copious gallons of blood, bad puns and not really a lot action.

What is delivered is clearly a work of enjoyment as it shows in the production that half of the setups are setup in incredibly awkward ways. "Why is there a wood chipper at the top of the stairs?"

Strangely, those really long jokes that you see a mile off, miss with purpose.

A lot of fun, for what it is. Good job guys.

Fantastic horror/comedy indie
moviegeek86-934-73084014 February 2020
Hands down one of the best indie horror comedies I've seen. Everything from the acting to the camera work to the effects are well done. The characters were likable, the pacing was fast, it had me laughing throughout and the final act was drenched in gore. It was everything I wanted in a horror/comedy.

Highly recommended.

A Fresh Plot in a Vampire Film
Wendalou14 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I love quirky movies. You know, the ones you can't predict the ending 5 minutes in. (Why do I have to be so good at it?) I wasn't really sure what I was watching 5 minutes in but I was enjoying what I was seeing. Some comedic gore but your 12 year old would be ok if they like films like this--language is ok and no sex scenes. A family working together to save the house from being taken by the evil county clerk with vampire stage-craft. Too bad the vampire ends up being real. But they're Harkers, after all--that's what they do!?! Some sweet, stick-up-for-the-family sentimentality, too. I liked it.
