Orphan was released by Scream Factory on April 14th, 2024.
Murderous children is one of my favorite sub-genres of horror. Some are good, most are bad and a select few — including Orphan from 2009 — are truly great. Starting all the way back in 1956 with The Bad Seed, audiences have been captivated by the concept of children committing heinous acts of violence. Now, thanks to Scream Factory, we have one of the most shocking entries in the genre available on blu-ray with a brand-new, limited-edition slipcover.
Orphan Critique
Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther in The Orphan
Much like The Sixth Sense — and even Sleepaway Camp — Orphan is a horror film that’s primarily remembered for the twisted revelation at its conclusion; however, a movie has to be more than just its ending. Even knowing how the film ends, the rewatch-ability of Jaume Collet-Serra’s twisted tale is undeniable. The kill count is relatively low for this style of horror,...

CBS' "Family Affair" wasn't the biggest sitcom of its era, nor was it the most groundbreaking, but it popularized a found-family formula that would endure for decades after its original run. The series followed a lifelong bachelor, Bill (Brian Keith), whose lifestyle is interrupted by the sudden arrival of his three orphaned nieces and nephews. Clueless about parenthood yet suddenly the dad of three grieving kids, Bill recruited the help of several other characters throughout the series — most notably, his loyal British manservant, French (Sebastian Cabot).
"Family Affair" ran for five seasons on CBS beginning in 1966, and though it doesn't appear in syndication as often as other shows from its era, the series is still fondly remembered by those who saw it. Unfortunately, the show is also remembered for the unusual amount of tragedy that befell its stars. Child star Anissa Jones died of an overdose just five years after the show ended,...

Since the second Academy Awards ceremony in 1930, 73 people have received acting Oscar nominations for their debut film performances, yielding a total of 15 breakout wins. Conversely, the list of actors who have earned recognition for their final movie appearances is much smaller, featuring only 18 general and two successful examples. Those who belong to this club gained entry in a variety of ways, with some having voluntarily quit acting altogether, others having specifically stepped away from film performing, and a few having sadly not lived long enough to bask in the glory of their farewell nominations.
Since film acting retirement can never be absolutely permanent while a performer is still alive, only deceased individuals can correctly be counted as official members of this group. Although most currently living retired actors did not pick up Oscar nominations for their latest films anyway, the academy did smile upon one – Daniel Day-Lewis – on his declared way out.

No one was safe when “The Bad Seed Returns” premiered on Lifetime last fall. To celebrate the success of the anticipated sequel to Rob Lowe‘s Lifetime original film “The Bad Seed,” check out our special 40-minute “Making of” roundtable discussion with star Mckenna Grace, who developed the story and co-wrote the script with her father Ross Burge. Grace also executive produced the film alongside her parents, Ross and Crystal Burge, with multiple-Emmy nominated producer Mark Wolper also returning to executive produce alongside writer Barbara Marshall, who also co-wrote the film. Together they are joined by Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria for a memorable Q&a about their highlights, key scenes and goosebump moments.
The delightfully unhinged Emma Grossman (Grace) is back and more diabolical than ever, so what made the team want to revisit her story after the shocking events of the first film? Was there much discussion...

Carol Locatell was born on December 13, 1940 – a date that happens to have been a Friday the 13th. So it seems very fitting that when she embarked on an acting career, her role in the 1985 slasher Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (watch it Here) would turn out to become the role she was best known for. Locatell delivered a hilarious performance in that film, making the foul-mouthed Ethel Hubbard someone fans have been having fun watching for nearly forty years now. Sadly, Locatell is no longer with us. She passed away recently at the age of 82. Ron Sloan, who played Ethel’s dimwitted son Junior in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, broke the news of her passing on social media last night.
Sloan wrote,
Dearest friends, fans, and Horror family,
With great sadness, it breaks my heart to announce that my Friday the 13th Part 5 Mom, (Ethel Hubbard) Carol Locatell has passed away.

Known to horror fans for her role in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Bloody Disgusting has learned the sad news this week that Carol Locatell has passed away at the age of 82.
Alongside Ron Sloan’s character Junior, Carol Locatell played Ethel (aka Ma) in the Friday the 13th franchise’s fifth installment back in 1985, delivering a scene-stealing performance that helped make her a fan favorite star on the horror convention circuit in recent years.
Sean Clark writes on Instagram, “Just got a call from Ron Sloan letting me know that our friend Carol Locatell who most of the fans know as Ethel aka Ma in Friday the 13th Part 5 A New Beginning has lost her battle with cancer. My heart goes out to her husband Greg and their entire family.
Clark’s tribute continues, “I had the great fortune of working with her for 15+ years and she was an amazing person.

Every year, a lot of actors win awards on Oscar night, but the ones who most often win the evening are the young stars and starlets who get to walk the red carpet. Sometimes they even win Oscar gold too. With any luck, the young star of “The Florida Project” Brooklynn Prince will make a splash at this year’s ceremony, but here are some of the cutest kids of years’ past:
Jackie Cooper – “Skippy” (1930)
Jackie Cooper was nominated for Best Actor for his role in 1930’s “Skippy.” To date, he’s the youngest boy to ever be nominated in the Best Actor category. He lost to Lionel Barrymore, who thanked Cooper in his acceptance speech. But Cooper didn’t hear it: he fell asleep on Marie Dressler’s arm during the ceremony (which started after midnight) and no one wanted to wake him.

McKenna Grace has revealed that she underwent spinal surgery last month.
In a social media post that featured a video of her in the hospital post-surgery, the 16-year-old actor wrote: “Occasionally, life imitates art and the night my episode of Handmaid’s Tale where I was in a hospital bed came out, I was actually in a real hospital bed.”
Grace’s character found herself in a hospital bed in the episode titled “Together”, which aired on 12 October.
“Social media only reflects what we want people to know often we don’t see the ugly, hard, less-flattering sides of a person and their life,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
“For me, it’s been easier to hide my struggles and insecurities and maybe write about them in songs, but that didn’t fix them.”
Grace did not reveal the reason for the surgery.

Variety is reporting that Lifetime is pushing the release of "The Bad Seed Returns" in the wake of the horrific school shooting in Uvalde, TX that has claimed the lives of 19 children and 2 adults.
"The Bad Seed" originated as a novel that was then adapted as a stage play and subsequently a film in 1956 starring Patty McCormack as a precocious pig-tailed little girl who also happened to be a murderous sociopath. In 2018, Lifetime remade that movie with McKenna Grace as the title character and Rob Lowe as her father. It was successful enough to give us a sequel following...

Lifetime’s The Bad Seed Returns sequel movie scheduled for premiere this Monday has been delayed in the wake of the Texas elementary school shooting.
The film’s co-writer, executive producer and star Mckenna Grace, who reprises her role as Emma, revealed the news on social media.
“In the wake of the recent tragedy in my home state of Texas, we have decided to delay the release of ‘The Bad Seed Returns.’ Lifetime and everyone involved are in agreement,” Grace wrote. “I don’t feel comfortable promoting the film this week and we don’t think Monday is the right time to release it.
She continued, “I was in first grade when Sandy Hook happened … and it feels like not much has changed since then. I remember my parents teaching me emergency action plans for going to church or the movies.” You can read her complete statement in the tweet below.

“In Their World, Adults Are Not Allowed… To Live.” So runs the chilling tagline for the 1984 cult classic horror Children of the Corn, based on the short story by horror maestro Stephen King. Set in an agricultural town in Nebraska, the film tells the story of 12-year-old Isaac, a real little charmer who indoctrinates the local children into a religious cult that slaughters anyone over 18! The film, which cost under $1million to make, was a smash hit and spawned a horror franchise. To celebrate the release of a lavish Arrow Limited Edition box set of the trilogy, including the original film in Ultra High Definition, here’s a round-up of some other horror films featuring problematic pint-sizers which you won’t want to turn your back on for a moment…

The script for Blood Born wants to tap into some of the deepest and most primal of human fears and instincts. The desire to have children and the fears of the complications that come with pregnancy. To say nothing of the changes it will bring to one’s life. Anyone who has been through it knows just how scary it can be. Especially if you’ve been through it before and it ended badly.
From The Bad Seed and Rosemary’s Baby to The Omen and It’s Alive, films have played on the desire to have children. Even the plot of the dinosaur film Hatched has its roots in the quest for parenthood at any cost. Can Blood Born capture those fears and give them a supernatural twist? Or will the film’s scares be stillborn?...

The Nine Network screened just two first-release Australian dramas – Seachange and Bad Mothers – last year and had to rely on New Zealand imports to fulfill the local drama quota.
Kiwi series The Brokenwood Mysteries, Straight Forward, Westside, The Bad Seed and Dear Murderer and feature film The Changeover aired on 9Gem, accounting for 50 per cent of the network’s local drama obligations.
Conversely, Nz dramas accounted for only 5 per cent of Network 10’s local drama hours and and 10 per cent of the Seven Network’s, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s 2019 Compliance with Australian Content Standard and Children’s Television Standard report issued last week.

Freddie Mercury sang that Love Kills, and that’s apparently where Gene Tierney’s coming from in this bizarre domestic noir. Dream wife Tierney is cultured, rich, and drop-dead gorgeous, but hubby Cornell Wilde should have read the small print about her manic possessiveness. Beautiful people, beautiful scenery and Technicolor so bright that even Alfred Newman’s music score seems to be in color; John M. Stahl’s thriller stretches the definition of Film Noir.

Killer kids have been in cyclical fashion ever since The Bad Seed (1956), as little Rhoda found that the best way to eliminate family problems was to eliminate the family; from that was born the blonde moppets in Village of the Damned (1960) and an attempt to attach a sci-fi explanation behind the killings. Onto the turmoil of the ’70s then, as a political and philosophical bent was applied to Who Can Kill A Child? (1976), with lingering and devastating results.
Wckac? was released in its native Spain in April, and rolled out to various parts of the world under different titles thereafter: Trapped, Would You Kill A Child?, The Hex Massacre, Island of Death, Billy’s Got a Sickle and He Looks Kinda Mad, and most commonly Island of the Damned were all used to sell a film that is pretty hard to sell. This is not a story of sorcery and witchcraft or even of healing the damaged child adopted by a single mother and her other adopted daughter as much as it is a parable about following your own inner direction as dictated by your heart and soul.
When Wiebke, a horse trainer and adoptive mother to Nicolina, adopts a second daughter, she is faced with a broken soul who menaces her very existence. The film could be The Bad Seed meets Three Faces of Eve, but it is more than that.
When mother and daughter return from Bulgaria with Raya, a cute five-year-old orphan, Wiebke learns that her new daughter suffers from an attachment disorder and cannot build emotional connections to those around her, and further, she begins exhibiting shocking behavior and grows increasingly violent, claiming her actions are motivated by the provocation of a dark spirit.

If someone decided to make a documentary about those mothers who go on Dr. Phil to talk about how their young child is trying to stab them in their sleep, it would probably look something like Katrin Gebbe’s Pelican Blood. It’s an incredibly effective drama about how children’s actions have powerful effects on a family, about a mother’s resilience, and the desperate lengths she goes through to save her family.
The German-language film follows Wiebke (Nina Hoss), a single mother who owns a horse training facility for riot police. She has an adopted daughter, Nicolina (Adelia-Constance Ocleppo), and the film’s first half highlights Wiebke’s desire and success in adopting another little girl, Raya (Katerina Lipovska). Both of her little girls bond quickly, and they seem to be the perfect family, but it’s clear that there’s something wrong. Darkness follows Raya, as indicated...

In Descendants 3, we get to meet four new VKs to join Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos in Auradon, including the twin sons of Mr. Smee. However, despite playing twins, the actors who play Squeaky and Squirmy aren't actually twins in real life. Christian Convery and Luke Roessler, who portray Squeaky and Squirmy, respectively, don't just look alike - they also both boast pretty impressive acting résumés. So if you're wondering why they look so familiar, it's probably because Descendants 3 wasn't the first time you saw either of them on screen.

One night in 1950 during an especially frenetic episode of The Colgate Comedy Hour, Jerry Lewis stepped away from Dean Martin to address the camera point blank – “You get the idea – I’m supposed to be a 9-year-old kid.” Hardly a revelation – especially to Red Skelton, the reigning king of prepubescent horseplay.
That reign was begun in 1923 and fueled by broadly played gags that were both leering and infantile – like a burlesque version of The Bad Seed. One of Skelton’s most grating characters was a wisecracking brat called the “mean widdle kid” – wearing short pants and lace collar while delivering grown-up one-liners in baby talk he was a less feral version of Joe Besser’s...

There’s no shortage of films about evil children, so at the risk of indulging in hyperbole, let’s just say Nicholas McCarthy’s “The Prodigy” is the latest. If the idea of a serial-killing pre-teen terrifies you, this film might give off some shivers, but “The Prodigy” doesn’t add anything terribly new to the recipe. Except a little paprika. (Literally.)
Taylor Schilling stars as Sarah, a woman whose eight-year-old child Miles has heterochromia (one eye is a different color than the other), and a genius-level intelligence. He also has a nasty tendency to beat his fellow students with a wrench. There’s something terribly wrong with Miles, but Sarah just can’t figure out what it is.
The audience, however, knows exactly what’s wrong from the film’s opening minutes. Miles was born at the exact same time as a despicable serial killer, Edward Scarka, was shot dead by the police.

If we’ve learned anything from movies like “The Omen,” “The Bad Seed,” and “The Good Son,” it’s that kids can be little demons. Director Nicholas McCarthy’s “The Prodigy” takes that concept a bit further, positing that children have the ability to carry the past lives of demonic, sociopathic souls and act on their deranged feelings. At least that’s what we glean from a brief “Nightline” clip about reincarnation shown in the film — which is possibly the clever inspiration for Jeff Buhler’s screenplay. While it lacks gripping, nail-biting tension, the unnerving horror that underscores the family drama brings it to life.
Minutes after a ruthless serial killer (Paul Fauteux) is shot to death in Ohio, a baby boy is born to a loving married couple in nearby Pennsylvania. Sarah (Taylor Schilling) and John Blume (Peter Mooney) have sacrificed a lot to bring their boy Miles (Jackson Robert Scott) into the world,...

Arriving in theaters this weekend is Nicholas McCarthy’s The Prodigy, the latest addition to the pantheon of creepy kid-themed horror movies. Written by Jeff Buhler and starring Taylor Schilling, Jackson Robert Scott, Peter Mooney, Colm Feore, and Brittany Allen, The Prodigy is centered around a youngster named Miles (Scott) who exhibits some troubling behavior that causes his mom, Sarah (Schilling), to begin to suspect that there might be something sinister living inside of her son. Desperate to try and get her kid back to normal, Sarah will stop at nothing to figure out just what is going on with Miles, and her desperation leads the embattled mother to some very dark and disturbing places along the way.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from Lifetime’s remake of “The Bad Seed.” For a non-spoilers take, check out IndieWire’s review.]
In 1956, “The Bad Seed” set the standard for cute kids gone bad on the big screen, tapping into the fear that maybe sweet little Jenny isn’t so innocent after all — that evil is born, not made. It was the antidote to the Patty Dukes and Shirley Temples that had dotted the media, and paved the way for future movies of its kind like “The Good Son” and “Orphan.”
Lifetime’s remake of Mervyn LeRoy’s classic follows the general structure of the original film but gender-flips the single parent, casting Rob Lowe as dad David Grossman, who begins to have uneasy suspicions about his perfect little girl Emma (Mckenna Grace) after an unforeseen tragedy occurs. The film also changes out the gardener/caretaker, who in the original film saw through the little girl’s facade,...

“Basket of kisses! Basket of kisses! Basket of kisses!”
This saccharine phrase heard in Lifetime’s “The Bad Seed” remake is a haunting holdover from Mervyn LeRoy’s classic 1956 psychological thriller. Delivered with just the right amount of false cheer by the titular murderous child Emma Grossman (McKenna Grace), the line is made even creepier because she’s actually practicing saying it in front of a mirror, followed by a calculated smile.
It’s frightening, it’s silly, and it’s exactly the type of camp that’s expected — nay, craved — from the Lifetime remake machine. Sadly, that’s the best part of the entire movie, and it was already blown in the teaser trailer
Rob Lowe executive produces and directs this update of “The Bad Seed,” in which he also stars as the gender-flipped single parent David Grossman who suspects his overachieving “honey bear” is a little off following a tragedy.

A supernatural take on The Bad Seed, director Richard Donner’s 1976 thriller about a demonic child boasts a top-notch “old Hollywood” cast including Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. Gilbert Taylor (A Hard Day’s Night) did the cinematography and composer Jerry Goldsmith’s work was rewarded with the Academy Award for Best Score. This cash cow spawned three sequels, a 2006 remake and three different tv series.
