What was that really?
opiostheloego19 December 2015
I do not tend to exaggerate, but I can say for sure this makes the top five of the worst films ever. Never in my lifetime of watching films have I ever seen a film that has kept me so uninterested, so bored, so frustrated with its meaningless events, its miscreation and constant super effort to become something important and special. There was no acting, there was nothing that could actually save this. From the very beginning to the very end a void. A void that was so vast that engulfed everything and everyone that were and took part in this. I do not know what "inspired" and led these people to be part of this production. Bottom line? No, no, no, never again!

Embarrassingly bad.
lordkrythic10 October 2015
This movie had about the same budget as any given old-school Power Rangers episode, but with worse acting and even worse special effects. I feel sorry for the creators of it, because they seriously lack talent at what they do. Asylum has a long history of shitty movies, and quite honestly, I don't how how they can afford to keep making garbage like this. All of the actors were disinterested in their roles, and you could almost read the "man this movie is crap, when do I get paid?" expression on their faces. As for the script itself...if you were to give a child a box of crayons and a handful of paint, I promise they could create a better script than this. It's truly embarrassing that this movie even passed the brainstorming stages.

Wardrobe by Ebay
admin-2216913 January 2019
The wardrobe seem to consist of armore for dirt bikes and paint balling. Helmets were for Welding, seats in spaceship curtesy of Ford Escort, while the controls from the cockpit of 50's aircraft that wobbled constantly. Most seemed to be bits begged, borrowed or stolen from movie sets from the past 3 decades. Acting was a little iffy in places but who can blame them when everything was so cheap! They were really trying to make a silk purse from a Sows ear. As long as your willing to look and laugh over some beers, then give it a miss.

Low budget affair
kosmasp9 December 2020
I totally understand everyone not being really smitten by what they saw. Well almost everyone I reckon. You either cut this some slack or better not watch it at all. It does have a couple of familiar faces in it (so I do know that at least some of the people involved do know how to act - though you couldn't tell by watching this I reckon - bad accents and all included at times) ... maybe that is something that might sway you to watch this.

Either have some low budget love or do yourself a favor and do not waste your time. I've seen worse movies (yes I have, even if you don't believe that) ... so there's that

Steven Seagal joins SyFy
daveoneal-7941823 December 2015
The cast of this movie came straight from the Steven Seagal acting school. Some of the actors sounded like they read the whole script in one tone without taking a breath. Even the editing was made to appear like a Seagal movie by speeding up scenes to make it look faster than it was, but instead making it look like the camera was jammed when filming. That style didn't work in 1980 why would it work in 2015. One person is holding a rope attached to another. One is in a still environment the other is in tornado conditions. Even Arianna Afsar couldn't make this movie watchable. It was produced in a weekend to try and cash in on the Martian buzz.

possibly the worst acting, sfx, and lighting in recent years
kristoffe-brodeur22 December 2015
So, there are some great scenes and lighting and then all of the sudden two of the male leads are in tank tops and tee shirts, on mars. Are you serious, did they run out of money for wardrobe? The 3d modeling and compositing is pretty good, but it really looks like something from the knight rider days.

Now, the acting, is absolutely tragic. I wonder often, who casts these people and how confusing it must have been to see so many bad actors line up that these are the best they could find. Is snakes on a plane worse or better than this? Every now and then these beautifully lit scenes that look like deadspace are ruined by soap opera lighting, and I can't figure out why. why? The inconsistency from pretty good to absolutely wretched is amazing. I think this video should be the 'oh my god i am in this' not 'my friend is a lead in this'.

I hope this is fun, a joke like sharknado, because it is really bad.

Can life and death on Mars be any more amateurish or less interesting?
TheLittleSongbird21 March 2018
Have made no secret in the past of intensely disliking, and even outright hating a lot, a vast majority of The Asylum's (near-universally maligned for good reason) output, though there is curiosity as to whether they are capable of making something good and compulsive about their output's badness. Admittedly, The Asylum do have a small group of watchable films and the occasional (big emphasis on that word) above average one, unfortunately outweighed by the lacklustre at best and often dreadful films they churn out.

After seeing 'Martian Land', giving it a fair chance and trying to not let bias get the better of me, as much as it actually pains me to say it do agree with everybody else who not only found it an awful film but also one of The Asylum's worst. Very much the same as what was said about 'Alien Convergence' and a few other Asylum efforts seen recently. One of their most amateurish and intelligence-insulting certainly, all their trademark flaws are here in 'Martian Land'.

Just for the record, giving a film the lowest possible rating is incredibly rare for me these days, trying to be a fair reviewer trying to see the good in everything viewed. That rating is only reserved for films etc. that look like no effort or heart was put into it and like nobody was trying, a cardinal sin in film but actually not committed all that often. 'Martian Land' is one of the worst examples of this in recent memory.

Visually, 'Martian Land' looks incredibly cheap even for something made on a low budget. It's very drably and sometimes dizzyingly shot, incoherently edited (bacon-slicer-like) with glaring and unforgivably sloppy continuity errors and even the scenery doesn't make much impression despite being actually the least bad aspect of the film. Even worse are some of the most laughable and pathetic-looking special effects to be seen on celluloid, actually looking they were done as an afterthought and on the small remainder of the money they had left.

Can remember little about the music, which tended to be intrusive, annoying and out of place. The dialogue is utter gibberish and truly juvenile and unnatural, even by The Asylum standards and even in their best efforts the script is one of the weaker assets. How it was approved beyond first draft, or suggesting ideas stage, is beyond comprehension.

There is absolutely nothing thrilling, tense, suspenseful, emotionally investable or fun about the story. The predictability may have been forgivable if the film was actually engaging let alone exciting but it fails to be either throughout. Lets not get started on how insultingly nonsensical and ridiculous it is, things similarly are so vague and confused that coherence was also a major issue in places. The conflict had no urgency, imagination, fun or menace at all, it was all just dull and dumb.

As sort of expected, as it is a trademark of The Asylum it seems, there are illogical and irritating character behaviours that makes one endear to them even less in a film with not one interesting or rootable character. There is not one halfway decent performance either, almost like they weren't even trying.

Overall, awful with nothing redeeming about it, except that it is not quite as blatantly derivative as other Asylum efforts. 1/10 Bethany Cox

Particularly stultifying
Leofwine_draca23 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
MARTIAN LAND is a particularly stultifying rip-off movie from The Asylum, this time copying the Matt Damon flick THE MARTIAN. Some terraformers have colonised Mars successfully after the destruction of the Earth, but now they must battle against a Martian sandstorm that threatens to destroy their fragile colony. This is talky and cheap throughout, with bad acting and worse writing; absolutely none of the characters are interesting, and there's no tension or interest at any point in the narrative.

Welding masks ?
wxjuh14 November 2020
The budget must have been low if all they could wear was what looked like wet suits and welding masks with the dark glass removed and replaced with clear, why bother at all ?

Godawful
johnpendarvis25 June 2017
Seldom will you see a more flat, lifeless attempt at filmmaking than this. Dreadful acting, static camera work, wildly fluctuating and jarring scene segues.....it's almost comical....almost. The CGI is cheap and two dimensional, constant disjointed reaction takes, you may have guessed by now I didn't like it much. Absolutely no redeeming quality to this massive stink bomb.

LMAO These Other Reviews Are CRAZY
vicky_renee27 May 2022
This was a VERY good movie!

I just don't understand THESE people who leave horrible reviews!

People like them ruin it for others by missing out on a good movie! It really irritates the hell out of me, because I used to skip on movies with reviews like those.

This movie had you on the edge of your seat from the start. It DID have a good plot and it DID have a great ending.

It's worth watching!

Not horrible for low budget production
Viewer11112 February 2016
Set on Mars, Martian Land is a low budget film but does have an interesting premise. Mars is being terraformed, and the causes a huge sand and electrical storm which threatens domed cities.

Special effects are OK. Some vehicles which look decent, and some scenery which is OK. The sand storm is only adequate.

Acting is average. There is a sub plot about a father and daughter who are estranged.

Costumes are poor. The security uniforms are t-shirts with masking tape applied. Environmental suits are sort of OK, except again, colored masking tape was used to put stripes on the helmets, and in some places the tape is already lifting off.

Not much for soundtrack.

Overall I give this a C rating. Not terrible, but not great.

Your psychic powers have not failed you, this movie is atrocious. In fact, it's so bad that it doesn't even qualify for so bad it's campy good. I wouldn't even normally review a movie this bad but after reading the only other review (Lordkrythic) who's review is equally bad. I had to chime in. I mean, Lordkrythic and I quote:

"As for the screenplay itself...if you were to give a child a box of crayons and a handful of paint, I promise they could create a better screenplay than this"

Do you even know what a screenplay is? Obviously not. Go back to critic school!

Can I get my hour and 35 minutes back?
whyohmean23 January 2020
Where to begin. Looks like interior of spacecrafts are made of plastic milk crates. Spandex and welding helmets for space suites. The defibulator glove with aligator clips. The close ups of the 'space helmets' with God awful details. I always thought Flash Gordon had corney special effects. Flash Gordon is light years beyond what this film has considering resources and technology available. My advise, don't waste your time like I did unless you want a good laugh at horrible effects.

Bad enough to be a Canadian film
mavisroadbills17 June 2016
The special effects are not the worst i have seen but camera angles (directing) make any mild acting ability completely lost. Sad that we cant do better in 2015. I rather watch an equally low budget Dr. Who from 1980s and be more entertained. In the first 1 minute of watching this film (about 1 hr into the movie) and seeing the horrible camera angles, acting, dialog and lesbian kiss, i swear it was a Canadian film, but its not !! Why make this crap and who would spend money selling this to the network. I rather watch reruns of 1960s My favorite martian than this. I need 10 lines to submit a review. Sadly nothing more needs to be said. Space Channel, STOP buying rights to these crappy films. please stop. Only then maybe we can exterminate future crap friends m being made. These actors should not quit their day job. I would be embarrassed to say i was in a film like this. More embarrassed than if saying i was in a porn film.

Oh my goodness
paranoso21 March 2020
I can't believe I just saw this movie on television in South Korea. They usually only play Hollywood blockbusters films. This film is a failure of epic proportions. Lowest budget of all times. The only thing that would have made this film awesome is if it was a space porno film. Then at least the film would be considered the highest budget porn film to date. Then perhaps the actors performances would be worth watching. One can only wish lol. Enjoy the film.

Not great...
junk-monkey14 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
It's not great, in fact it's a pretty naff piece of junk but by the Asylums's standards it's a masterpiece.

The plot is unfocused and all over the place and doesn't make much sense from one minute to the next. Most of the acting is one note (but then so are the characters so it's hardly ALL the actors fault - some of the dialogue is execrable) and some of the acting is okay. (The stand out was Arianna Afsar who did a pretty good job with a minimum of material.) The SFX are not terrible. All in all, the usual. Ho Hum.

But there is one aspect to the film which was refreshing. The two young women trapped at the start of the film and who have to make their way through the course of the film from point A to Point B to do something important - are a couple. They're a lesbian couple. And nothing much is made of it. It's not played up for titillation. It's not polemical. That they are gay is not a problem for the characters, or anyone they encounter. It just is. They're gay - so what? Background stuff - and they both survive to end of the film!

Martian Land not going to win any GLAAD awards but Yaaaaay! it's a step!

Big budget this is not
gnkelly-9732218 February 2024
Not much happening here. The story was kind of a very watered down Total Recall just without any of the suspense, fun, or interest. Humans on Mars under big domes. Sand storms might kill them all if the ONE expert can't save the day à la every other bargain basement sci-fi movie ever made.

The entire budget must have gone on buying the CGI which was for the most part ok. The sets, costumes, and props on the other hand were embarrassingly bad! Wet suits for space suits, toy plastic masks painted silver for helmets, black pallets screwed to every wall to make them look all space shippy. It was so hilariously bad you wouldn't have noticed from laughing if the story had secretly been brilliant, which it wasn't!

I'd give this one a miss.

Low budget, but not deserving of the contempt being shown.
rj-cullen23 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This film is in the tradition of The Asylum's mock-busters, but is taking a very different tack to the film that has inspired it. For a low budget production, especially one from this production house, the effects are not actually all that bad - certainly watchable. The acting is also, whilst not perfect, far from terrible.

The plot is fairly predictable, using the usual "family vs environmental disaster with long car chase" format employed in a lot of this company's work but the end result is certainly watchable and fairly enjoyable in an non-challenging way.

This is the level that The Asylum should be aiming for more of its low-budget productions - before then aiming a bit higher if possible.

pjdickinson-2782211 August 2023
Very very low budget nonsense with terrible cinematography, special effects that look like something you'd see in a 1990s TV show and acting that is as bad as anything I've ever seen on anything. It's laugh out loud terrible. The people involved should never have been given day release from their psychiatric hospital. The shrinks should be ashamed that they agreed to it. I understand it couldn't have been easy making a movie with $500 and a piece of string but even with those limitations they could have done better. I suppose they just went up to random strangers in the street and asked if they wanted to be in a film.

OMG,,, I read all the previous nineteen reviews and agree with all of them. I got this in a box of freebies, some of which were pretty good, but,, if I could, I would give this back. Nobody has mentioned the terrible set decoration, so I will DO that. The props include a plastic see-through coffee jar, complete with screw top lid. The electronics include a video booster with co-ax connections on the back. The welding helmets have already been mentioned, but the associated oxygen cans are recycled propane tanks for gas barbeque grilles. AUUUUUUGH~!~!~ Whoever backed this flick lost their asses, no doubt.
