Solid story with average execution
Chris_Kalhoun6 April 2018
I'm not connected or affiliated to this movie in any way so a completely unbiased review here. Didn't really know what to expect with it but aside from a feeling of a b-rated execution, the story had substance and merit with a decent somewhat predictable plot. The dialogue was decent, not great. The directing might have been the weakest part of the film by not getting the most from the scenes and some rough acting from some of the supporting cast but the mains were good. Overall it had some very solid morales and comes across pretty authentic in its story and the hardships of coming back from prison. If you can look past the B-rated execution, it's a solid movie that deserves props for telling the story right.

Whoever gave this a good review is family of someone in it because its terrible.

Warning: Spoilers
Everything about this movie was bad. Very bad. I usually can deal with low budget or bad quality and i love basketball, but i couldn't get through the whole thing. Think i made it 40 minutes or so before i couldn't take it anymore. Acting 1 star. Basketball scenes 1 star. They try to have "and 1" moments where a player does some fancy dribbling and its all so bad. It looks like a high school film project. Stay away.

Has to be one of the worst movies I've watched, terrible acting and an even worse story line. Read the reviews before I watched this hoping for a good movie and boy was I disappointed, not sure what film they were watching but it couldn't of been the same movie I watched as it was so tedious.

Very Powerful and Uplifting Move
fields_dan27 December 2019
Left me in tears. It's all about GOD and some people despise that.

I almost never would give a 10 on a film since I believe that every film could do better, but in this case it is just a really good family film with some great take-a-ways. The acting keeps getting better in their films and the professionalism of the script level is very comparable to any family film produced by Hollywood. The messages and impact was felt deeply by myself. The next day I am still singing the songs in my head and trying to make some differences in my daily life to take advantage of the advise offered in the movie. I can't understand why many people would vote a '1' and then not even do a review, unless they never even saw the film and are just against anything with references to Jesus in a film. I guess that part hasn't changed in over 2000 years!? Go see the film and take someone with you...

Worst movie ever
remi-desvignes14 December 2017
This is literally the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life. If you call this good acting, I could say I'm up for the Oscar's and I never acted in my entire life. My 3 years old would be able to write a better script and he doesn't know how to write yet. I just feel like I've been raped of my time. I feel ashamed to have watched such a piece of c***. The IMDb rating of this thing (it can't be qualified as a movie) is just unbelievable and the top reviews must have been bought or written by cast/family/producers. Before watching this, I didn't believe in God. Now I have to because I feel like I've just been in hell... Forget torture, waterboarding and all the horrible things you could think of, world has come up with the ultimate interrogation technique. Show this movie to anyone and he will tell you anything to stop the agony.

Inspiring

"Theres no easy way out" - this is the motto of the movie. One of my personal favorites. This one will leave you with tears and happiness, a great one to buy or rent. I like the director's previous film 'Suing the Devil' - very talented filmmaker.

Bad acting, bad script, don't quite understand other reviews: "Powerful", "made me cry", "excellent, one of the best movies"... Please, come on!!! either these people 've never seen a movie before...(maybe too much video-gaming) or they want to support the basketball community...or so , maybe there is some quality ball playing , yet doesn't worth the suffering of enduring this piece of crap more that 10 minutes. On the other hand if you want to suffer , go ahead and take a peek and then , you tell me bro!

I saw director's new movie, 'The Islands' and had to see this film 'Slamma Jamma'

When a movie has a good story, or some superb character, or even a great soundtrack, it is a good movie. But when everything comes together, is about a piece of art what we're talking about. I think this is the case. From the first glance, this film is breathtaking with incredible basketball scenes and the amazing part was the actors could actually DUNK!!!!

10 out of 10 all the way.

Worse than an after school special. 7.4 ? gimme a break. So many clichés and predictability. Acting is deplorable. Casting at its worst. I am so frutsated I want to leave white. however they ask for five lines minimum. didi IMDb rate this so high due to the hoop la created by Jaden Smith??

Not very good
triab24 March 2017
I had high hopes for the movie after watching "Greater", which I LOVED! This movie had many things wrong with it...from a really bad wig for the younger representation of the main character, to a lot of over- acting and really strange and unnecessary scenes. There were awkward attempts at humor and my husband and I were pretty disappointed that we spent the money to see it. I do like the idea of one changing their life and outlook and that the movie has moments where faith in God is a focus...that's why I gave it a 4. I really wouldn't recommend the movie though.

If I can change and you can change, everybody can change.
Adambernstein990331 December 2019
THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS! I have to say this movie in a way is different than the other basketball movies. Why? BECAUSE IT HAS FAITH IN GOD. This is why it has a low 6.0 score (which use to be 8.3). The illegal downloaders should have learned a lesson, but being that we're in the last days, they exhibit end-times behavior. Only faith in Christ can change a man. If so, they will LOVE this film.

This is from the same director of 'The Islands' - i found this film as moving as any i have seen and the dunk scenes make this truly a great action film. whats more of this film is how few people give this film credit or even recognize it as one of the filmmaker's better films. i give this film a good word and i would watch this film any time i needed a little uplifting motivation. this is a good film...Hands down. no actor could have done a better job in this film than Chris Staples. This guy can act and dunk. 10+

God awful Christian conversion movie
mifa-730722 May 2019
Do yourself a favor and leave this one in the dumpster you found it in. I think this is some sort of Christian conversion movie, kinda like that terrible Christian rock they've been trying to push forever. There are no redeeming qualities. I love basketball, dunking, and feel good stories; but this is without a doubt one of the ten worst movies ever made.

Terrible acting...just TERRIBLE ALL AROUND
worddiva6 November 2019
OMG I could not even make it through this movie. I got to the halfway point and I had to turn it off because the entire thing was just garbage. I so wanted to enjoy this movie as I know one of the actors, but there was just nothing to redeem this. No real plot, overly long bad scenes, stilted dialogue and awful acting--they did me in. I finally had to just turn it off to regain my peace. This is tragic.

This movie has a very young and funny cast, with some old heads thrown in for good team balance.
misha-coliins25 November 2017
Thanks to Chris Staples and the G-man - Michael Irvin - the movie is better than expected and worth watching. It has enough of everything to not bore any member of the family tears. In fact, it may (depending on your interest in slam dunking) become a sort of cult classic on ESPN or something.

I don't think Slamma Jamma is a masterpiece in any shape or form, but it is an enjoyable film. I do agree that it is predictable, the plot is nothing particularly special and the ending especially doesn't really hold any surprises. But it is nicely filmed, with cinematography and pretty scenery and the music is pleasant. The script is good on the most part, there are some humorous parts but it is also somewhat touching, and the director Tim Chey pitches the humour and melodrama at the right level. And the acting is spirited ****1/2

Clichéd but very heartwarming, Excellent Michael Irvin
gerald-edwards7 December 2017
This film does an excellent job in painting the picture of a down and out guy who has one last chance. The story is the classic come-back-from-behind, a staple of sports movies, but the authenticity of the backdrop helps a great deal. Michael Irvin is excellent in an understated performance as the sports agent gone bad. He has a few skeletons in his closet and the film handles this cliché well. Chris Staples plays a ex con and convinces. The energy in the slam dunk contests is effortlessly captured. I found 'Slamma Jamma' clichéd but heartwarming and its one of my all time favorite sports movies.

Started Slow - but got better and better and better ...
joncarrollAttorney24 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This 2 hour movie is pretty lackluster for the first 50 minutes or so. Then it picks up and the intensity builds and builds right to the end. It's simply one of those great sports movie that's really well done. I would easily rank in my top 20, perhaps like #17.

'Slamma Jamma' is a formulaic yet an enjoyable film. It's a movie that gives itself away as soon as one character says "I want to win that dunk competition!" Still it has charm and excitement that comes from seeing it for what it is. It's predictable, yeah, but it's not much different from seeing a replay of a competition where your favorite character won.

The film turns into a genuinely inspiring story about courage and determination in the face of societal pressure and incalculable odds. And that's pretty much what sports stories, familiar though they might be, are really all about. This was a heartfelt movie where often, I got upset to see how cruel people would be to others, just because of the color of their skin. I am "white" though not white like this screen, lol, and raised in Los Angeles during the late 60's/70's and just never understood why people would not like you, without even knowing you just because of your looks/race and go to prison like Diggs did.

The movie delivers the goods: great performances and a lot of sports suspense. However, you have give it chance - the first one forth of the show is kind of slow. Many people can relate to this film. The director did a good job so that anyone could sit down and watch the movie to a point they would leave with a upbeat mind. This was a positive thing the director showed. Towards the end, everyone had each others back. The players even entered their world with confidence. This was a symbol that when we as a people start being positive about things nothing but good will happen to us.

For basketball fans and general audiences alike - this is a good movie worth checking out. The actors on the team all did a wonderful job. The film shows the hatred and prejudice against them but also the eventual acceptance. In the film, there are problems within the team when the new players first arrived, though I understand that wasn't really the case

It's an engaging film with a great message based on a true story.

Great sequences and styles in the tradition of sports classics like "Hoosiers", "Remember the Titans" and "Friday Night Lights"

The movie works well as a sports story—it reminds me of the movie Miracle (I thought Kurt Russell deserved an Academy Award nomination for that one!)—but its political statement is what's most important. Guy out of prison can make it!

A great story, but not brought to life that well on the big screen. Yet the film is interesting, holds your interest and is less cheesy than anticipated although it probably has taken liberties with the real version of the story.

I don't know a lot about cameras, lenses, and film stock (if movies still use film anymore?), but there's a grainy, orangey patina to the movie that gives it its old feel, and it's very effective.

Besides that, it's a solid, journeyman, underdog sports movie (with a whole lot of racial tension thrown in). Besides the color of the film, there's a laying open of the frustration and surrender black players felt after a relentless barrage of hate from opposing dunkers like Gary Smith and their respective communities. Finally, key dunker surrender to reverse hatred and lump all "crackers" together.

If you are not moved by this film, then you are part of what was wrong then and what is not corrected to this day. It was about respect and the need for humans to give each other their due and not dwell on stupidity. We were all cut from the same cloth many many generations ago in Africa. I came to Florida from West Texas and know the area well. Color is not important there when it comes to sports. We've gotten past that. It is time to get past it in other areas of our lives. If Slamma Jamma can help a little bit in that, then it is well worth your time. Well, it's well worth your time anyway as it is a great movie. Michael Diggs shows the world that what really matters is your heart. And is your heart right with the man above?

The film is memorable and ends in an upbeat fashion. Don't miss it.

You need not be a basketball or sports fan in general to enjoy this highly recommended movie.

Rating of eight stars out of ten.

All over the court but sometimes compelling.
donnamae-32718 August 2017
It's a well-done drama with a couple of clunkers in it. The ONE thing that was slightly disappointing was the strange ending. The ending was rushed and corny. That's my opinion.

The cinematography however is just beautiful - I remember sitting in the theater and saying "who the hell shot this?"

I think the actor who played Diggs should get at least a Golden Globe for his effort - I mean c'mon he's a real life slam dunk champion and he really can act...

This is a very deep and meaningful film which has great moralistic lessons to offer the audience.

As our country continues to see the lines of racial divide.....
helen_king214 November 2017
10 out of 10.....

As our country continues to see the lines of racial divide grow farther and farther apart this film is a breath of fresh air. With a well written screenplay and excellent acting this slam dunk movie lifts the spirit of its audience to embrace the truth that peace can be found for everyone through faith in the one true source of hope and love. We need more films like this to help shape our culture for the betterment of society.

Take your family, take your friends, take your sports teams, and see this film. If we can emulate the change that took place in this man's heart and soul then maybe we can make a difference in our nation that has eternal weight.
