Uri Singer’s Passage Pictures has acquired the rights to the Rich Cohen nonfiction book The Fish that Ate the Whale about America’s “banana king” and the implications that his reign had on multiple Latin American countries.
Cohen’s book, which was published in 2013 via Macmillan imprint Picador, tells the story of Samuel Zemurray who, according to the book’s synopsis, “rises through the banana trade to become America’s Banana King and the president of United Fruit. As a businessman and power broker, Zemurray’s story led to the origin of the phrase ‘Banana Republic’ and influenced the political future of several Latin American countries, including working with the CIA to lead the 1954 coup in Guatemala.”
Passage previously worked on an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s White Noise, directed by Noah Baumbach for Netflix. Singer is also set to produce the DeLillo adaptation Underworld, with Ted Melfi attached the direct for Netflix.

With Aladdin producer Dan Lin taking over film leadership at Netflix from Scott Stuber, there will still be a commitment to a robust feature slate. Such were the statements from the streamer’s co-ceo on Thursday during the company’s call to discuss its Q1 earnings report.
Fielding a question from analyst Richard Greenfield about a New York Times report that characterized Lin’s mandate was to make movies at Netflix “better, cheaper and less frequent” and how such a formula is possible, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos responded, “We did not participate in that article.”
Sarandos added, “That’s not a quote from Dan.”
“There’s no appetite to make fewer films,” said Sarandos, whose company release some 50 original features last year alone, with some previous-year tentpoles costing the studio north of $200 million including the Russo Brothers’ The Gray Man, and prestige pics like Noah Baumbach’s White Noise as much as $140M.

Want to grow fur, fangs and howl at the moon? Well, in Byte, the new film from writer/director Eddie Lengyel there’s an app for that.
Jett, April, Nora (Carlie Allen) and Damon are hanging out on Halloween when Jett gets a bright idea. He downloads an app that claims, if you buy werewolf blood from them and perform the proper ritual, you can become a werewolf. It’s Halloween and there’s a full moon, so why not? Nobody seems surprised when the blood shows up almost immediately after he orders it, as if delivered by some lycanthropic DoorDash.
They’re also not surprised when the ritual seems to have no effect. But later that night, a woman walking home is torn apart by something large and hairy,...

Best Drama Supporting Actress is the only Emmy acting category “The Morning Show” has yet to crack, but it’s now the one the series could dominate like only one other show has managed to. Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Julianna Margulies, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor are all eligible for the Apple TV+ drama in the category this year, and if they all make the cut, “The Morning Show” will join “The White Lotus: Sicily” as the only shows to nab five drama supporting actress nominations in a single year.
“The White Lotus: Sicily” set the record last year with bids for Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza, Simona Tabasco and eventual champ Jennifer Coolidge. Before that, the record for a series in the category was four nominees in one year, which only two shows had been able to field: “Game of Thrones” in 2019 and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2021.

A fun ensemble join Adam Sandler and George Clooney for Noah Baumbach’s latest film for Netflix, Jay Kelly.
——
At the back end of last year, we covered the story that hot off the success of co-writing 2023’s highest-grossing film, Barbie. Noah Baumbach was returning to Netflix to make another movie.
The director of Frances Ha and The Squid And The Whale has made Netflix his home over the past few years, releasing his last four films exclusively on the streaming platform.
When the film was initially announced, we learned that Adam Sandler would be once again working with Baumbach following their collaboration on 2017’s The Meyerowitz Stories. That film marked the beginning of Baumbach’s relationship with Netflix and the director has since gone on to release Marriage Story and White Noise on the platform.

In 2022, Dan Lin, the producer of “The Lego Movie” and “It,” was in negotiations to become head of DC Studios. It was a singular opportunity to reimagine the company behind Superman, Batman and other costumed heroes. But talks broke down. Among the reported reasons was that David Zaslav, the head of DC’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, and Lin could not agree on a way to properly compensate him for leaving his production company Rideback for the new gig.
So why, less than two years later, has Lin decided to take a different corporate job, overseeing Netflix’s film division? And what kinds of obstacles will he need to overcome if Netflix is going to raise the quality of the movies it makes?
For Lin, Netflix offers a vast consumer base, one that overshadows those of rivals like Max or Disney+. It’s also more stable than other media companies.

DarkGame, the latest thriller about dark doings on the Dark Web, opens with the masked figure known as The Presenter overseeing the murder of a bound woman in a manner chosen by the highest bidder. By the way, he chooses a chainsaw as the instrument of her demise. That’s followed by Detectives Ben Jacobs and Cathy Burnette rescuing two missing children from traffickers.
Ben has barely gotten home to his pregnant wife however when they’re called back into the station. The woman we saw killed in the opening scene had vanished without a trace a couple of weeks earlier. The footage is the only clue they have as to who is responsible, but the people behind it know how to cover their tracks.

Focus Features has bought international rights to Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Joe Alwyn, Variety has learned.
Corbet, who sits on the Berlinale jury, penned the film with Mona Fastvold (“The World to Come”), a Norwegian filmmaker who is also his wife. The film charts 30 years in the lives of visionary architect László Toth and his wife, Erzsébet, who flee post-war Europe in 1947 and witness the birth of modern America. László initially endures poverty and indignity, but the architect’s genius soon catches the attention of charming industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren, whose dark influence threatens to destroy everything László and his wife have built.
The cast is completed by Raffey Cassidy (“White Noise”), Isaach De Bankolé (“Casino Royale”), Alessandro Nivola (“The Many Saints of Newark”), Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac Vol I”), Emma Laird (“Mayor of Kingstown”), Jonathan Hyde (“Titanic”) and Peter Polycarpou...

Ready for another deliciously outré performance from Lars Eidinger, everybody’s favorite German arthouse weirdo (known for his work in Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria, White Noise, and on and on)? Well, strap in for Sterben (Dying) from German director Matthias Glasner.
In the exclusive first trailer from The Match Factory (see below), Eidinger plays Tom, a Berlin conductor with more than a few personal issues to deal with.
Dying is a rare new feature from Glasner who, unlike his prolific star, has kept his filmography tight. (His last feature was 2012’s Gnade.) Judging by the trailer, and Glasner’s previous work, including 2006 Silver Bear winner The Free Will, Dying looks like another powerful mix of melodrama, wry humor and philosophical ponderings about the “big questions” of life and, given the title, of death.
“The name of the piece… is ‘Dying’,” a high-strung composer, played by Robert Gwisdek, instructs the orchestra.

2024 Oscars Best Production Design overview: Can any of the other 3 nominees surpass ‘Barbenheimer’?
A critically important craft to filmmaking is production design. The production designer is responsible for the look of a film, which includes finding locations, designing and building sets, and running the art department. Although the name of this category has changed over the past nine-and-a-half decades, the general principle is the same, with this Oscar going both to a film’s production designer(s) and its set decorator(s).
This category doesn’t usually match the ultimate Best Picture winner; the last time that happened was in 2017 with Guillermo del Toro‘s “The Shape of Water,” and before that was Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2003. One of this year’s nominees didn’t even receive a Best Picture nomination.

While Greta Gerwig’s directing career skyrocketed with Barbie, it shouldn’t be overlooked that the screenplay for the year’s biggest movie was co-written by Marriage Story‘s Noah Baumbach. Baumbach would also produce the film alongside Gerwig and Barbie star Margot Robbie. Baumbach’s career with Netflix consists of three features in addition to Marriage Story, including White Noise and The Meyerowitz Stories, starring Adam Sandler.
Baumbach is now tapped to helm his fourth project with the streamer. He’ll be reuniting with Sandler and pairing him with George Clooney for the new project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The details for the movie’s plot has yet to be revealed, but Baumbach is also on board as a producer on the movie. He will be joined by Sony’s Amy Pascal and David Heyman as producers. Heyman had also worked with Baumbach on Marriage Story and also produced Barbie.

Noah Baumbach has found the stars of his new feature film: Adam Sandler and George Clooney. The plot details for the Netflix project are being kept under wraps.
Baumbach will also produce the film, alongside Amy Pascal and David Heyman, who worked with Baumbach on Marriage Story and also produced Barbie, which the filmmaker co-wrote with Greta Gerwig.
This will be Baumbach’s fourth feature for Netflix, following White Noise, Marriage Story and The Meyerowitz Stories, which starred Sandler.
Sandler, repped by WME, was last seen in Netflix comedies You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and Murder Mystery 2. He recently released the animated feature Leo on the streaming service.
Clooney, who will work with Baumbach as a director for the first time on the project, will have his latest directorial effort, The Boys in the Boat, in theaters Christmas day. He is repped by CAA.

Having escaped punishment for White Noise, Noah Baumbach will continue a Netflix deal with perhaps the highest-profile casting of his career: Adam Sandler (reuniting from Meyerowitz) and George Clooney will lead an untitled, “funny and emotional coming-of-age film about adults.” This ostensibly describes, say, every single film Noah Baumbach’s ever made; what’s more interesting is that this feature’s co-written with Emily Mortimer, whose only previous scripting credits are the TV series Doll & Em and The Pursuit of Love. Seems casting her kids in White Noise proved fruitful? [Deadline]

Clooney most recently directed “The Boys in the Boat,” which bows in theaters on Dec. 25, starring Joel Edgerton and Calum Turner. He’ll star with Brad Pitt and Amy Adams in Apple’s “Wolfs,” which is planned for a 2024 release with Jon Watts directing.

Having won an Oscar for her gritty first film about a revenge murder, Emerald Fennell’s second movie, out this week, reminds us that she doesn’t believe in happy endings. Saltburn is about a vengeful college student who aspires to an even wider death toll.
Why would this charismatic young British actress want to become cinema’s doyenne of dark?
It’s not that she’s adrift in indie obscurity. Saltburn is funded by Amazon MGM Studios with Warner Bros International distributing overseas. And her co-producer is Margot Robbie, the effervescent Barbie who made the world blink pink.
Fennell, like Greta Gerwig, who directed Barbie, is a mega talented actress who also managed to hit the mark as a filmmaker. Before Barbie, Gerwig created a touching mother-daughter drama Lady Bird and then adapted and directed Little Women which scored six Oscar nominations including for Best Picture.

With months of hindsight now at her disposal, Greta Gerwig is looking back at the runaway summer success of “Barbie” with an appreciation for the independence she was able to wield at the helm of her first big-budget Hollywood film.
Gerwig, in a long-form interview with Vanity Fair, said the key was plowing through with blinders on, blissfully ignorant of her studio surroundings.
“Honestly, there was nothing but fear around all of it from the outset,” Gerwig said. “You’re dealing with a topic that is already so filled with opinions. But the trick is to say, ‘Well, instead of trying to tiptoe around it, what if we just stepped in it?’ And the whole undertaking was definitely like ‘Drive it like you stole it.’ Go, go, go. Noah Baumbach had no desire to take on the “Barbie” script.
The “White Noise” writer-director ultimately collaborated with partner Greta Gerwig for the Mattel-produced meta film about the famed doll and served as co-writer. However, Baumbach revealed during a special screening at the Writers Guild of America West (via Variety) that he at first thought it was a “terrible idea” to write “Barbie,” despite Gerwig agreeing to pen the script together.

This features footage from: "Girls", White Noise, The Dead Don't Die, House of Gucci, This Is Where I Leave You, Logan Lucky, Paterson, While We're Young, and BlacKkKlansman. I love that he includes one of his poems from Paterson (one of my all-time faves) and the way he integrates the back-and-forth Gucci convo. Hilarious. Another great supercut from Azevedo, always editing some of the best cinema videos on YouTube nowadays. // Continue Reading ›...

In Don DeLillo's pivotal postmodern classic, "White Noise," professor Jack Gladney contemplates the inevitability of death, musing, "All plots tend to move deathward. This is the nature of plots ... We edge nearer death every time we plot. It is like a contract that all must sign, the plotters as well as those who are the targets of the plot." As a novel that functions as the cornerstone of postmodern literature, "White Noise" situates death anxieties at the heart of its remarkably absurdist core, a theme that is interconnected with late-20th century socio-political and cultural shifts, including rampant consumerism and the obsession with television screens. DeLillo's novel is pretty heavy and saturated with too many themes, and a film adaptation of such a tonally wild text is as tricky as it gets.
Director Noah Baumbach rose to the challenge and created a faithful reflection of DeLillo's world in his "White Noise,...

It’s funny that after the ugliness of Uba’s history got out, Cory wanted to refocus on doing the news, not being the news.
On The Morning Show Season 3 Episode 1, being the news was right up there on his list, as they had an entire media blitz surrounding sending someone into orbit on a formerly untested manned rocket.
As they say, be careful what you wish for because you might just get it.
What happened on the aptly titled "White Noise" was different, though.
After Uba’s data was breached and the studio was effectively held hostage for a short time, revelations began circling amongst the staff. It was only a matter of time before it got outside of Uba.
These weren’t just any accusations, either. It was highly probable, if perhaps not provable by legal definitions, that decisions were made based on race, and the results weren’t pretty.

QuarXX’s “This Thing Inside of Me,” Caye Casas’ “Malamuerte” and maybe the biggest buzz title in the whole selection, Sean Wainsteim’s “Idaho Winter,” a multi-media mashup, feature in a robust, variegated lineup at Sitges FanPitch, which is quickly establishing itself as a key early fall global genre project platform drawing on titles from not only Spain but Europe, Latin and North America and Asia.
Unspooling Oct. 6-7, the FanPitch ranks as one industry centrepiece at the Sitges, International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, a hallowed genre fest Mecca and one of the most important in Europe.
Projects range widely from multiple psychological thrillers, often driving deep into protagonists’ deep trauma, to black horror-comedy, stylish scarefests, near-future allegories, the allegedly true-event paranormal, and vampire actioners.
One title, “Idaho Winter,” is billed as “YA meta-fiction.” Another, fantastical series “The Lost Gods of Memphis,” surely the biggest budgeted of all projects at this year’s FanPitch,...

The Morning Show‘s Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) is working on cutting a deal with billionaire Paul Marks (Jon Hamm) in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek from the September 20 episode, “White Noise.” In the segment, above, Paul says, “You’re welcome, Cory.” What exactly is Cory supposed to thank Paul for? Well, that’s the question a coy Cory asks before Paul responds, “for boosting your stock price. That tends to happen with companies I’m rumored to be acquiring.” While the deal outline is vague, Cory is rather responsive to the loaded statement, saying, “It’s more than a rumor.” (Credit: Apple TV+) “That’s news,” Paul answers surprised. But Cory’s not done with the reveals. “Well, here’s some more news. Your original offer works for me at the price you first pitched. Let’s get this done,” he declares, hinting at things to come as...

The Morning Show is finally back in all its glory for its third season. The Apple TV+ original series revolves around the battle between a veteran news anchor and a new talented face trying to gain supremacy over one another in the morning television industry in America. The series also focuses on issues like workplace sexual harassment.
The Morning Show initially premiered in 2019, as one of the first Apple TV+ originals. The series was a very expensive takeover for Apple TV+ but they had trust in the series and renewed it for the second season which concluded its run in November 2021, and after two years it’s finally back for its third season.

Adam Driver hit out at streaming services like Amazon and Netflix as he promoted his film “Ferrari” at Venice Film Festival on Thursday.
The actor stars as Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s drama. The film was granted a waiver as it was not produced under Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) contracts, allowing the cast to publicize the flick at the festival amid the ongoing actors and writers strikes.
During the press conference, Driver called out Amazon and Netflix for refusing to meet SAG-AFTRA’s demands, insisting: “I’m very proud to be here to be a visual representation of a movie that’s not part of the AMPTP and to promote the SAG leadership directive, which is an effective tactic, which is the interim agreement,” Variety reported.
