Promising start of a possible series
mountaingoat10026 March 2017
This is the latest in the cosy mystery movies that Hallmark specialises in. As usual, it is set in a beautiful, picturesque American small town, although filmed in Canada. Jewel is the winsome lead who has a property restoration and renovation company. When one of her neighbours is found dead, she suspects foul play. There is a reason that she is averse to seeking hep from the police which is revealed later in the story. Luckily, a famed true crime writer, Colin Ferguson, has just arrived and is her latest client, and is willing to assist in her snooping. Their relationship is warm and fun, with hints it could develop into romance in the future. The mystery itself is reasonably involving even if the culprit is guessable long before the denouement, and the details are well laid out. A nice touch is that Jewel uses her skills and observations learned in the fixing-up business to uncover a hidden treasure and then to trap the killer. This is a promising beginning and should be a welcome addition to the ongoing amateur lady sleuth series.

Jewel (Kilcher) is the 60 million dollar woman
Ed-Shullivan7 July 2018
If the audience keeps in mind that this film was made especially for television and is not a Hollywood blockbuster with an unlimited budget, I can candidly say that "Framed For Murder: A Fixer Upper Mystery" is well worth the price of admission compared to so many big Hollywood flops.

Lead actress/singer Jewel Kilcher plays a building contractor (yeah guys she renovates homes, and changes flat tires for men) named Shannon Hughes who discovers the dead body of her close friend Jesse Hennessey, (Ken Tremblett) in his home. Jesse was a deep sea treasure hunter and it becomes evident quickly that there is someone who wants one of Jesse's found treasures enough to kill for it. The police initially say Jesse's death was an accident and not a homicide. Case closed. Or is it?

So Shannon (Jewel) who is distraught over the sudden death of her close friend Jesse decides to solve this murder mystery with or without the local police's assistance. Shannon has a new tenant living in her studio apartment, a writer named Mac Sullivan (Colin Ferguson) who Shannon has just signed a contract with to renovate Mac's historical mansion. These two romantics Shannon and Mac, have very good on screen chemistry and they team up to try and solve the mystery. But eh, Shannon (Jewel) is easy on the eyes so who wouldn't have good on screen chemistry with her? She also sings professionally with a voice of an angel. (Her hit songs included "Hands", "Who Will Save Your Soul", and "Foolish Games" to name but a few.)

The movie moves along at a good and easy pace with a number of suspects that will keep you guessing. I enjoyed it a lot more than many of the big budget Hollywood releases and I hope Jewel keeps making more of these family themed entertaining films.

I give it a solid 8 out of 10 rating

Hallmark doesn't know this series works
hypzrkunt31 March 2021
Being ar home during COVID I watch shows I haven't seen before. I have watched these 3 movies/episodes at least 3 times each. The characters ar3 great and while this may be only the second best of the series the whole thing is enjoyable. I wish I got to see more of Jewel.

No spoilers here but being hallmark not sure why no more effort to keep them running.

Great mystery and good relationship make this worth watching.
cgvsluis5 April 2022
This is the first meeting between the local fixer-upper genius played by the pop singer Jewel (and she does a decent job...great acting chops!), Shannon Hughes, and the famous investigative reporter turned crime fiction writer played by the handsome Colin Ferguson, Mac Sullivan.

Mac has purchased a piece of property in town and it is an older but gorgeous home and he hires Shannon to restore it. While she is working on the restoration, Mac stays in Shannon's guest cottage.

Meanwhile a friend of Shannon's is killed and they are both intrigued by some anomalies...so they start investigating the crime together.

This was a great mystery...salvaged jewels, yoga studios, and all of Shannon's friends are involved. This was a good start to Mac and Shannon's relationship...which starts with some funny assumptions on Mac's part.

Worth watching, while not quite as good as Murder she Baked-Mystery 101-or Aurora Teagarden, it is one of the better Mystery series on Hallmark Movies & Mystery channel.

"I second the amazing part."-Mac.

The Portuguese Necklace
bkoganbing19 June 2017
In the town of Lighthouse Cove purportedly in New England and probably several inlets away from Murder She Wrote's Cabot Cove we've got a contractor played by singer Jewel Pilcher who is another of Hallmark's professional women with a taste for sleuthing

This is a murder that hits home for her. An old family friend Ken Tremblatt who was liked or even loved by just about every resident of Lighthouse Cove dies in what the local police called an accident, they say it was a fall in the home. Her contracting experience leads Pilcher to doubt the official verdict.

She's joined in her doubts by Colin Ferguson who is a crime reporter and author and who just hired her to fix up and make livable an old mansion he purchased. Pilcher makes a believer of Ferguson though he wishes she would bring her findings to the police a bit more.

Tremblatt was an old salvage diver and delighted many of the town folk with his tales. They took what he said with a grain of salt but in one instance a tale about finding a really expensive necklace belonging to a runaway Portuguese princess turns out to be true. It is also the Hitchcockian McGuffin of the story and the reason for a few more murders. We have one ruthless murderer here.

I have to say these Hallmark mysteries are entertaining and this one is no exception.

fine for Hallmark Mysteries
SnoopyStyle2 January 2022
Shannon Hughes (Jewel) restores old homes in her hometown, Lighthouse Cove. Her best friend Jennifer Hennessey (Erin Karpluk) is opening a bed & breakfast. Jennifer's uncle Jesse Hennessey dies and Shannon suspects foul play. Investigative writer Mac Sullivan (Colin Ferguson) is the hunky newcomer in town with a house to restore.

Jewel gets to sing a song and gets to act. It's a good vehicle for her. It's a functional whodunnit mystery. The actors are fairly good. I don't like the final final ending. It's a little silly and convenient. I can see that kind of Home Alone trap on the page but the staging needs to be better. This is fine for a TV movie.

Framed for Murder
coltras353 July 2023
In the small resort town of Lighthouse Cove, everyone knows that the best man for the job is a woman. And that woman is Shannon Hughes, owner of a construction company and an expert in Victorian home restoration and renovation. Through her renovations she will find clues to uncover the house's secret past and in turn become an unlikely sleuth to help crack these unsolved mysteries.

In this debut episode, her friend's uncle -a treasure Hunter- is found dead in his house. The police calls it an accident. But Shannon thinks otherwise and investigates with the help of her client Mac, who happens to be an investigative reporter.

And the mystery and secrets are unveiled steadily in this good mystery that is well-acted and focused enough. Jewel and Ferguson as the protagonists share a good rapport, working together. There's a few strange acting suspects like the victim's estranged friend. Who's that guy in the blue vehicle? Is he behind the break-ins?

Nothing to fix in this great movie! Romance and mystery fans will adore it
inkblot1111 December 2018
Shannon (Jewel) is a one woman dynamo. She runs her own home remodeling business, can change a flat, and solve mysteries. Just finished with a Bed and Breakfast project, she attends a lecture in Lighthouse Cove, her town. This talk is by Jesse, who hunts for sunken ship treasure and relates some of his more famous finds. Not long after, he is found murdered, at home. The police believe, at first, he fell and hit his head; no homicide. But, Shannon doesn't think so. Agreeing with her is new resident, Mac (Colin Ferguson) , a famous mystery writer who has just hired Shannon to re-do the crumbling mansion he has purchased. After some snooping and clues, S and M may be in danger themselves, as the killer strikes again. Could it all be over a famous necklace once owned by a Princess? This terrific move by Hallmark, who else, has it all. Jewel is a beautiful star, very talented and smart; she also gets to sing a small bit! In addition, Ferguson has long held my heart and the rest of the cast is wonderful, too. Seaside scenery, costumes, script (based on a series of books) and the enthusiastic direction make for a film that need no fix whatsoever. Get Framed, get it very, very soon.

Poorly cast & acted!
lyndavanleeuwen29 May 2020
There are plenty of actresses that might have been able to seem capable of playing the part of a female builder! Jewel does not fit that description! Blonde ringlets, that elaborate ponytail braid treatment, the tightest jeans imaginable & high heeled boots just further demonstrated how incredibly inaccurate this characterization missed the mark! There may have been some depth to the storyline but she, and the incredibly facelifted older actress really made a joke of the film. Too bad, it had some potential with the settings & Colin Ferguson in the lead.

love these shows and the cast
fehtoc3 September 2017
So hoping they are planning on more fixer upper movies with Jewel and Colin Fergeson. Stories are good and I like the construction girl idea. I know some people aren't impressed with story line, however I like the face its easy going. Makes for relaxing hours of entertainment. Much needed in today's world. Of course the suggested romantic interest the two seem to have for each other makes great to me. I am so hoping they continue this series and hope you can let me know if more are planned.

Deadly Dull
janetlwil20 May 2017
Warm and fun? Jewel can act? Who is writing these reviews? Even by Lifetime standards this movie is cheap and low-budget. When Jewel picked up the guitar and began to sing at a funeral the whole movie jumped the shark. Gloomy music plays throughout and everyone walks around looking like they have a sour stomach. Consistency is non- existent. Jewel's fake hair changes styles right in the middle of scenes as does her lipstick color. Really poorly done.

Surprisingly Good Performance from Jewel
turkman14128 May 2017
I was pleasantly surprised by the acting abilities of Jewel. I thought she held her own with the professionals. This is another of those cozy pleasant little mysteries with amateur sleuths that have come out in the last year or so. I have enjoyed every single one and eagerly look for new titles. The Fixer-Upper series should be every bit as entertaining as the other series have been,

A predictable, super cheesy TV movie with Jewel (who should stick to singing!)
Kittycat636 June 2017
Oh dear, what to say about this TV movie? I'm actually watching it here in the UK at the moment on afternoon TV but it's soooooo cheesy that I've been switching between that and 2 programmes that are far more interesting! The acting in this movie is stilted, awkward and almost cringey to watch, although Colin Ferguson is usually quite good. The closeups of Jewel's facial expressions are inadvertently funny, they're that bad. The storyline is a bit crap in general and the worst bit is ..... Jewel's hair changes all the time! Also her hair looks fake - presumably too many hair extensions. Also, when she sings in the movie she seems to be trying too hard to look winsome and super girly. She's in her 40s now and really needs to steer away from that now and perform a bit more maturely and less sugary!! I do like her music but this is the first thing I've seen her act in and I'm not impressed ... She should stick to the singing!

Hallmark hit the nail on the head with this cozy!
sageonelove14 August 2017
I was delighted with this movie. First of all the G rating, how rare these days to see that! Then the cozy format, it was done perfectly. It had an interesting and inventive plot, well acted characters, lovely interiors, gorgeous scenery, suspense, a little action, and the special skills of our heroine were the ones that solved the mystery. Agatha Christie couldn't have done it better. Very enjoyable, fun, engaging and relaxing. I hope to see all the movies in this series. Bravo, Hallmark, you hit the nail on the head! (A little fixer upper joke there).😀

Bland
westsideschl12 April 2018
Started out with some really cheap/bad CGI. The dialogue was rote memorization of triteness for actors having difficulty memorizing lines longer than seven words; doesn't matter since they were too cheap to add subtitles. The first thing I noticed was how everyone (and I mean everyone) looked as if they were modeling clothing for middle class America while still in the store - bland, sterile, and always sparkling clean with no wrinkles what-so-ever. You would think they never sat down or did anything involving movement. Even the settings such as furniture looked like they came out of a showroom (obviously rented for the movie & told not to touch anything); essentially perfectly contrived and unnatural. The makeup was so heavy (males & females) it was a challenge for them to smile. Acting was daytime TV level. Script - forgettable. Anyway, not a good way to waste one's life.

2 Really Great Things
svader4 June 2020
2 stars for each if the really good things about this movie . . . . 1 for it coming to an end and . . . 2 for Jewel in those super tight jeans

Another mid America movie where everyone goes to bed and wakes up with full perfect make up

Nonsense is an understatement

Best of the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries amatuer detective series
Jackbv1237 January 2018
Compared to the other 2017 HMM amateur detective series, this one is much much better. Maybe it is that Shannon doesn't think she is a detective. Instead of thinking she is a better detective than the police, she just doesn't trust them period. She also has the help of Mac who is an investigative writer. And the crimes she is chasing in this one are all about family and close friends. And this story has a little romance potential.

The acting is good enough. In my opinion it is much better than some of Hallmark's go-to stars, at least in these detective series. Jewel and Colin Ferguson have chemistry. I knew nothing prior to this about Jewel, but she does a nice performance of a song that is reportedly her own, even if the performance is short.

I was surprised at the villain and I can't think of any clues that pointed the right direction. And there was a little misdirection.

When choosing the next movie in this genre, I'll stick with the Fixer Upper Mystery.

Good cozy mystery
marsmii20 May 2017
An enjoyable light mystery which flowed very nicely. Jewel is a pretty good actress especially since first & foremost she's a singer/song writer. The cast was good except for Laura Soltis, who has had too many facial plastic surgeries and is just scary looking! The scenery was nice and it was a good way to spend a quiet Saturday afternoon.

Can't wait for the next one
somelikeithotz20 August 2018
I remember buying Jewel's poetry book way back when and always hoped I would see more of her in the future. In Framed for Murder, she's warm, relatable and surprisingly a natural in this role. Her back and forth with Colin Fergeson is great and their timing is on point. Can't wait for the next one!

Jewel as the contractor helps solve a murder mystery.
TxMike22 April 2022
As common in many Hallmark movies it is set in Oregon but filmed in Canada. My wife and I enjoyed it at home on DVD from our public library. Some of the "mystery" is treated rather simplistically but in all it is an entertaining viewing.

Already a fan of her singing, I became a big fan of Jewel's acting in the 1999 Civil War themes movie "Ride with the Devil." Of that I wrote at the time, "For her film debut, I think Jewel did a fine job in the role she was required to play, a natural, really. It will be interesting to see what other roles she may get." She really is a natural, she is very authentic in the role.
