The horror genre has had a particularly successful year both on console format and for the PC, we’ve seen big-name hits like Resident Evil 7 and the continuing innovation of the Outlast series, now onto it’s second installment. I personally enjoyed Little Nightmares, a dark whimsical narrative which stylishly attempts to play on our childhood fears. On the horizon, it looks like 2018 and 2019 will repeat the genre’s success in 2017, there’s an incredible amount of potentially jaw dropping and pant wetting horror games which promise innovative fun and shocking narrative.

EA's boss says "linear" games are less popular with gamers than they once were. Is the end nigh for cinematic games like Uncharted?
Huge games that last for dozens of hours. Mobile games that can fill a few idle minutes. Shooter epics that take in small armies of players, and intimate experiences that pit a single mind against a fiendish puzzle. Technology has given rise to a multitude of genres and all kinds of videogames - far more than anyone could have even dreamed of back when the medium was still in its infancy in the 1970s.

In recent months, however, there's the question of whether a very particular kind of videogame can survive in an industry where replayability and continued revenue are becoming ever more important for a studio's bottom line. We're talking about single-player games - the big,...

The nominations for the Game Awards have been revealed and it should come to a surprise by no one that Nintendo is leading the way in nominations this year! Here are all the nominations and how to vote!
On December 7, 2017, 2017's video games, their studios, and the people who play them will be honored during The Game Awards 2017, hosted by Geoff Keighley. This year's event should have the gaming world buzzing, as Nintendo is finally in the limelight with about 24 nominations. No other studio can hold that distinction, but Nintendo. It's a long time coming for the once-booming company. The uptick can be attributed to their brand new system, the Nintendo Switch, that has changed the way the world games, as well as the way Nintendo develops.
Video games' biggest night is always a great time to reflect on the best games of the year, but it's also a huge night for reveals.

It’s continued to smash record after record but it seems Grand Theft Auto V won’t stop breaking records, now adding probably its most remarkable record yet to its portfolio.
In Take-Two’s results for their Fiscal Second Quarter 2018, the publisher revealed the Rockstar Games’ worldwide phenomenon Grand Theft Auto V has now sold in more than 85 million units
The new record makes GTA V “the all-time best-selling video game”.
According to The Npd Group, the record is both in terms of revenues and units, based on combined U.S. digital and physical sales across PC, console and portable devices.
“Our positive momentum continued in the second quarter, enabling Take-Two to deliver another period of better-than-expected operating results,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two.
Back in July, the open-world action-adventure title was currently the UK’s best selling boxed game in 2017.

In the wake of news on The Last Of Us 2 and Super Mario Odyssey, some gamers are upset that Microsoft doesn't seem to be focusing too much on offering exclusives to their player base. Microsoft's general manager of publishing's Shannon Loftis defended the Xbox One's lineup of exclusive titles and says there are unannounced exclusives in the works:
"I think our offering is good and it is solid. I definitely hear that gamers want more. [...] We do have more coming; more that are in the works that we're not talking about now. But I feel good about what we have to offer for the launch [of Xbox One X]."
As for what else Microsoft might have planned, Loftis did provide an update on the Fable franchise not too long ago, and almost hinted that the company had something in development. As for what else Xbox owners can expect as some wait for the Xbox...

A couple days ago a new trailer for The Last Of Us 2 was released, and it did not run without controversy. For those that missed the trailer (check it out here), some folks specifically took issue with parts that depicted a young Asian woman getting her arm mutilated with a hammer, as well as other bits that would make most people wince just a bit. Some spoke out against the use of gratuitous violence to sell the game, others spoke out about those speaking out saying the violence is fine. After a night of thinking about it, I can say the violence, while still incredibly tough for me to watch, was necessary to show in the trailer.
The reasoning is simple. If you're someone who likes your games to feature extra brutality and feel real, there's your evidence right there that The Last Of Us 2 is not going to shy...

Following its release around Halloween (surprisingly enough) of 2014, The Evil Within snagged a reasonable number of fans as a result of its visceral horror and engaging story, not to mention it’s association with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. This year, The Evil Within 2 returns to plague long suffering protagonist Sebastian Castellano with yet more nightmarish creatures and torturous situations to fight, crawl and clamber his way out of.
New players are advised to check out the first game (or at least read up on the story) before beginning the sequel, but needless to say, poor Castellano is suffering from a strong case of alcoholism following his experiences at the Beacon Mental Institute. Broken and in search of a saviour, he is visited by Juli Kidman (a mysterious Mobius double agent from the first game) with news of his beloved daughter, whom he had believed was killed in a house fire.

The latest trailer for The Last Of Us 2 is not for those with weak stomachs as it shows tons of violence. If you're uncomfortable with seeing people get hanged, a young girl's arm getting decimated with a hammer, a woman getting a hatchet through the skull...I would sit this one out because you don't know any of these characters anyway.
Yep, No Ellie or Joel here, just three new characters and a bunch of twisted humans. As for who these people are and what role they have in the game's sequel, we have no idea, but we do have some clues. Apparently, that woman getting hanged is "one of them," according to the two Asian teens. "Them" appears to be some radicalized humans who will likely be another obstacle for our heroes to face in addition to the already loathsome clickers.

PlayStation no doubt had audience members squirming in their seats at Paris Games Week with the unveiling of a harrowing and viscerally violent trailer for The Last of Us Part II.
A follow-up to 2013's survival horror video game, The Last of Us Part II takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where most of the human population has been transformed into flesh eating monsters. A Naughty Dog production released by Sony Computer Entertainment, The Last of Us was a cinematic experience as much as it was an immersive video game, and the new trailer for the sequel shows that Part II will continue to build on its predecessor's visual spectacle and emotional ties.
As evidenced by the new trailer, in the world of The Last of Us, the leftover humans can be more vicious than the infected that prowl the Earth, making survival—and retaining your humanity and sanity—all the more difficult.

Ahead of the UK premiere of his debut feature Hostile at the Horror Channel Frightfest Halloween event, director Mathieu Turi shares his admiration for Tarantino, describes the challenges of filming in three continents and reveals his ‘magic hour’.
You were born in Cannes so you grew up with film all around? When did you know for sure you wanted to direct?
I think it’s always been there. As a child, I used to steal my dad’s VHS camera to make mini-movies. They were basically all about my Jurassic Park toys eating my dog or invading the garden. Later, I did more elaborate short films with friends, instead of studying. Then, I remember watching Braveheart and the making of the movie. For the first time, I knew that directing was something I wanted to do for a living.

An improvement over the original, but is The Evil Within 2 a great survival horror? Here's our review...
The original Evil Within turned out to be little more than a re-skinned Resident Evil 4, but it wasn’t without its charms. The game was oozing in classic horror atmosphere, its story showed promise, and it was scary in an “I didn’t expect that hallway to play host to so many wall spikes” kind of way.
See related Star Trek: Netflix reveals the most rewatched episodes New on Netflix UK: what's added in October 2017?
Still, it was also a mechanically dull title that suffered from the fact that Resident Evil 4’s gameplay innovations occurred 10 years before its release. Sony has work to do on PlayStation backwards compatibility - an area it's lagging behind Xbox One...
Blood soaks the walls of the fog-filled entrance to a labyrinthine alley.
Bravely, Harry continues into the darkness. A siren wails hauntingly from some unknown place. There is something terribly disconcerting about all this. Perhaps he should go back? And then, in the blackness, he sees a gurney. A bloody sheet covers what can only be a body lying beneath it. And yet, Harry goes on. More blood is splattered on the concrete, even more drips from the chain link fence. And then he comes across it – a horrifying decomposing corpse hangs from the fence in front of him. And what are those figures coming towards him out of the gloom?
Things are looking very bad in the town of Silent Hill.
It is one of the most memorable moments in video game history.

Open the record books once again for GTA V, as the action-adventure title has added yet another record to it’s already staggering catalog of records broken.
With the fourth anniversary of it’s original release in September 2013, Rockstar Games’ sprawling open world spectacle is currently the UK’s best selling boxed game in 2017, according to a new report.
The report by Entertainment Retailers Association noted GTA V outsold every other game in the UK during the first half of the year, selling 334,280 units by the end of June, beating high profile release DVD of Arrival, La La Land, Trainspotting 2, Fifty Shades Darker, FIFA17, Finding Dory and many others.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands was the second highest game on the list coming directly behind GTA V with 311,792 sales.

Almost four years since Grand Theft Auto V set the gaming world ablaze, breaking world records and making history, the title has once again topped the UK sales chart.
As its 4th anniversary approaches, the sprawling open-world action-adventure title took the number one spot for the 13th time since launching on September 17th, 2013.
Along with Zumba Fitness, GTA V is now ranks third in most weeks at No1 of any title.
It also beat the newly released Nintendo Switch title Arms, which placed 7th.
It’s number one spot on the sales chart comes just six months after the game was named as “the biggest contributor to British economy” in gaming history.
Upon its release in September 2013, GTA V quickly became the biggest entertainment launch in history, earning $800 million during its first 24 hours on sale.
2 days later it officially broke $1 billion in sales, beating major films such as The Avenger’s Assemble and Avatar.

With the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, developer Naughty Dog was very clear that we would no longer see any more adventures starring Nathan Drake. From its initial development, Uncharted 4 was always meant to serve as the last outing for Nathan and co., and for anyone who’s played through the game in its entirety, it’s not hard to see why we probably won’t be getting any further adventures starring the main man himself.
With the upcoming release of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which stars Chloe Frazer as she teams up with Nadine Ross for a trek across India, fans have been wondering if this standalone release marks the end of the series as we know it. That’s still up for debate, but according to Shaun Escayg, creative director and writer of The Lost Legacy, it’s highly unlikely that we’ve seen the last of the Uncharted name.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Escayg was quick to point out that there are many other stories to be told in the Uncharted universe, and that The Lost Legacy simply ended up focusing on Chloe Frazer, who originally debuted in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves:
I wouldn’t say it’s the end. This thieving world is huge. There’s so many characters. Even before we settled on this particular story we were exploring Sullivan, we were exploring Cutter, and pairing each other up, thinking what would be right, what would have conflict, growth, something new, something fresh. And Chloe was the one that kept jumping out.
It’s worth noting that if Naughty Dog were to return to the Uncharted series at some point, it may take a few years before we hear any news on such a project. That’s because aside from The Lost Legacy, the studio is currently hard at work on The Last of Us Part II, which was announced at last year’s PlayStation Experience. Still, it doesn’t seem like this is the end and as soon as we learn anything more on the much beloved series, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Uncharted: Lost Legacy's creative director believes that the franchise's world is brimming with interesting stories...
While Naughty Dog still insists that we've seen the last of Nathan Drake in the Uncharted universe, they're stopping short of confirming that they intend to end the Uncharted franchise any time soon.

"...to say the Uncharted world is done... I doubt that highly," said Uncharted: The Lost Legacy creative director Shaun Escayg in an interview with Eurogamer.
Escayg believes that there are interesting characters in the world the team built through the first four Uncharted games to justify a series of side-stories similar to the one featured in Lost Legacy.
"This thieving world is huge. There's so many characters," said Escayg. "Even before we settled on...

Yesterday Microsoft held their big E3 2017 conference and during that time they showed off a bunch of cool upcoming games and revealed the next evolution of their console, the Xbox One X.
Today Sony is holding their PlayStation presentation and they'll show us what they have in store for their fans. I'm hoping that they have some new information and stuff to show us for The Last of Us 2.
Don't expect a new PlayStation console to be revealed, but maybe they'll announce some new tweaks and upgrades coming. Hell, maybe they'll even lower the price of the PS4 Pro to try and beat out the Xbox One X. I guess we'll just have to wait and see!
The presentation starts soon and you can watch it in the embed below.

Microsoft’s big talking point at E3 is obviously going to be Project Scorpio, but what exactly are they going to mention? We already got a lot of the hardware details, and spending time cementing it all isn’t too thrilling, so Microsoft needs something more to win this years E3. We dive into what Microsoft will be bringing to the show after the jump.
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none
Microsoft has used the months leading into E3 wisely by slowly releasing details about Project Scorpio through all the media streams. We have spec information, console looks, games hinted at, and of course Microsoft talking up a storm about how “powerful” it is. This means Microsoft has one route to go at E3, games.
We get it, Scorpio is the almighty powerful console that will surpass everything on the market. However, that all means nothing if we don’t have games to play.

Normally around this time a lot of E3 news starts to either get pre-maturely released, or “leaked” to the media just before the show starts. There are obvious reasons for both such as an early jump so your game doesn’t get buried under all the news, or simply having pre-E3 stage planning get leaked. Either way, Sony has been awfully quiet as of late and that isn’t normal for them. What do they have?
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none Sony is typically the worst at keeping secrets around E3. Every time they have something major planned it somehow gets leaked to the media way in advance. We knew about God of War, PS4 Pro, and many other recent announcements. Yet this year there hasn’t even been a slightest hint of what their big bang is. So let’s take some guesses on what little we do have.

E3 is an exciting time of year for all types of gamers as the show expands into many different categories. Mobile gamers can be excited for new social interactions, and maybe even some new hardware, and of course hardcore gamers can see what the next few years have for them. Here at Cinelinx we are excited for our own reasons and well, we can’t wait to tell you why. Want to know what’s got us excited? Find out after the jump!
Dustin:
Last year, overall, E3 was kind of a dull moment for many reasons. Sure we got a glimpse into Microsoft’s future with Project Scorpio, after the promised they wouldn’t be doing that, but they kind of forgot to bring the unit with them. Sony had a stellar opening showcase and showed off many games, but a majority of them are still unreleased, and undated.

Written, Produced and Directed by Anthony Caulfield, Nicola Caulfield
A couple of years ago we reviewed From Bedrooms to Billions, a documentary about the British video game industries early days; telling the story of the developments in computer technology in the UK during the late 70′s early 80′s, which helped inspire a generation of small team enthusiasts, hobbyists, school kids, bedroom coders and entrepreneurs to make and release some truly classic games of the era.
Now comes the follow-up, From Bedrooms to Billions: The Amiga Years, which looks at the next generation of computing, the 16-bit era and in particular the creation of the Commodore Amiga. A subject also covered by the documentary Viva Amiga… Much like that documentary, Caulfield’s film covers the same story – told by the surviving team members themselves – of the struggles to build a brand new computer at a time when, post-Atari crash, video games were a dirty word.

Meaning proves elusive in Ala Eddine Slim’s oblique narrative feature debut that serves as a timely commentary on the current immigration crisis. Depicting the travails of a young man attempting to emigrate from Tunisia, The Last of Us eschews dialogue and narration, instead relying on stunning visuals to compensate for its skimpy narrative. Recently showcased at New Directors/New Films, this feature will likely be too esoteric even for adventurous art house audiences, but it definitely signals the director as a talent to watch.
