Better than expected
tonimystic14 December 2018
Literally better than expected. I only expected kevin Hart to be high pitched and screaming and Hadish to be sarcastic; that's it. But this was an actually an entertaining movie with emotional bits with truly addressing a problem that most people make fun of. I liked it and recommend it.

What did you expect?

I rather enjoyed myself with this film. I know the formula and the headliners style of comedy so I knew pretty much what I was getting into.

I laughed and found some rather sweet moments in the film. Say what you want about Kevin and Tiffany but they both STARRED in a PG-13 film that is fun, light and has some pretty important messages... it's never to late to accomplish anything and sometimes it really only takes that one person to believe in you.

Really enjoyable comedy movie. I see those bad reviews with 1-5 ratings. Well I know that this is kind of the same story about students who didn't learn but there are really funny jokes which makes this movie quite good.(Not saying the plot or idea is original).

Everything it needs to be

This is a cute comedy. It definitely has its flaws - predictability, awkward dialogue and relationships that never get explored although they're hinted at - but the message is good and characters make you laugh. Tiffany Haddish is a great addition to the movie and a joy to watch.

A good cast and some amusing scenes somehow make this generally unfunny, fairly lengthy, instantly forgettable picture an entertaining time while it lasts.
domtaylor26 October 2018
I expected 'Night School' to be terrible, however it was actually a pleasant surprise. Sure, it wasn't brilliant; the already weak plot was entirely driven by the jokes, there was no real room for character development, and the film delivered no belly laughs, yet somehow it managed to provide some sort of entertainment. There were enough amusing moments to keep the comedy afloat, and while they never made me full on laugh, they managed to put a smile on my face every now and then. The cast all did good jobs with the material that they were given, and they kept things engaging even when the narrative was going nowhere. However the film did feel quite lengthy, and some already unfunny scenes dragged on for way too long. On top of that there was some noticeably bad ADR. On the whole though, I found 'Night School' to be an enjoyable watch when it was on, despite it being instantly forgettable. 6/10

Same thing Kevin Hart has been doing for many years now
EasternZZ27 September 2018
Kevin Hart is a very talented and hardworking guy. He deserves all the success that he has in his life. He is a cool guy and looks like someone you can hangout with and have a good time with. I want to get that out of the way.

This movie, I think is not great. Kevin Hart is taking advantage of his status right now by being in as many movies as possible, making as much cash as possible, and hopefully do it as long as he can. This is just another typical Kevin Hart movie (think Ride Along 2). There is just not a lot of new things that Kevin Hart does in this. He continues to make small jokes (something he has been doing for over a decade now), make these goofy and silly expressions, and follow a particular story path. It is not really funny, and the jokes go on and on to the point you feel kinda bad for the actors. It makes you cringe.

This is about a man who has been living a lie, and he decides that he is finally going to get the education that he never got. He goes to night school, at first he doesn't take it serious but the teacher there tries her best to encourage him to work hard, "comedy" ensures, and everything ends happy.

Once again I do like Kevin Hart. Some of his standup is really funny. It is just that he has been doing the exact same thing for years now and I think if he continues, he will eventually end up like Eddie Murphy, where people seem to forget that he was a great comedian at some point in his life because they have such a bad taste from his crappy movies. I hope Kevin can make as much money as he can man, because if he makes 2 or 3 more of these same films, it might eventually backfire on him and he may end up losing fans.

This movie is really not funny, but if you are a big fan of Kevin Hart and love his same usual facial expressions that he has been doing in all of his movies, you will like this and probably the next 2 or 3 of these movies that we know will be happening. If you are looking for Kevin Hart to change and improve, well this isn't the movie for you.

Imagine if Jim Carrey never did Truman Show or Eternal Sunshine and just continued doing what he did in Liar Liar, he would have disappeared quick. Jim showed us that he can do more than just the same funny faces and sound. He showed us that he was capable of doing something great. You need to show range.

I know the concept "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is probably what Kevin Hart is doing with his recent movies, but there is a point that it will break. When that happens it will be very difficult to fix it. Eddie Murphy's career never really recovered from Pluto Nash and Norbit. Mike Myers committed career suicide with Love Guru. Kevin Hart is talented but he really needs to start doing something new every once in a while. We are at a point where we can actually create a list of bad Kevin Hart films. He has made that many films now.

Nothing against Kevin but this is not a good nor funny movie.

Warning: Spoilers
Night School is directed by Malcolm D Lee and stars Kevin Hart who writes, produces and stars in this film as a struggling man who has to repeat his exams as he failed them back in high school. He meets a sassy teacher played by Tiffany Haddish who helps him with his difficulties in maths and reading.

Overall I thought it was a funny movie. I have seen alot of Kevin Hart's films and I find his humor to be both offensive and hilarious at the same time

Hart and Haddish manage to make a funny movie out of mediocre material
Jared_Andrews28 September 2018
Night School, a comedy starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish, delivers exactly you would expect from a comedy starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. It peppers in plenty of jokes, some hit while others miss so badly that they can hardly be recognized as attempts at humor. There's such an eclectic mix of silly, sweet and ridiculous that's the result of six writer patching together the script. It easily could have been a disaster if not for the talented ensemble of on-screen talent.

Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee once again displays his aptitude for letting Haddish showcase her personality. She is equally a force when imposing her gruff edge and when showing her softer side as a no-nonsense teacher who leads the night school class for those prepping for the GED. That's where she meets Hart's character, Teddy, a serial hustler in life who lost his sales job and now must pass the GED to begin a new job in finance and impress his successful fiancé. Everyone in the night school class has their own reason for being there, but I question the logic of it all in 2018 because their desired career opportunities would be more likely to require a college education than only high school.

Nevertheless, Hart's classmates include a mom who got pregnant in high school (Mary Lynn Rajskub), a oddball conspiracy theorist (Romany Malco, who is hilarious in his limited role), and large man who is an even larger doofus (Rob Riggle), to name a few. Give Riggle credit for his commitment. He consistently pours his heart into every line with the sincerest of effort, even the ones he must have known had no chance at eliciting even a chuckle. Some of the other performers have more to work with but each achieves maximum laughs from the mediocre material.

The jokes mostly come from the most obvious places, which comes across as lazy writing. There's about three too many sight gags, one of which is admittedly hilarious despite being disgusting to point that it's impossible not to look away. The other physical humor ploys, including over-the-top comic violence, grow tired quickly.

The script hits the pause button on jokes, it unveils a heart beneath it all. These tender moments aren't exactly masterful, more like gooey to the point just shy of eye-roll worthy. But them credit for trying. All considered, this movie earns a passing score that could have been better if the filmmakers had just put in a little more work.

Morally excellent and promotes great values
keatongroom27 November 2018
This is a fantastic film that is humorous and promotes great values, like the value of education and how if one takes it seriously it can change your life. There is so much cynicism toward college and university that it's terrible. Further, this film was a decent film and was somewhat inspiring and motivating in its own way. It carries a great message, while delivering that message through much humour! Recommend it!

I didn't laugh once. But I did cringe a lot...
Loving_Silence28 September 2018
One of the most dumbest comedies I've seen in a while. Literally nothing made me laugh. Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart are just doing their tired shticks. The story in this is completely laughable and cliched. I've seen this story done 100 times and way better told. All of the jokes in this movie do not land, I just cringed half the time and sighed the rest. Please don't go waste your money on this lazy, dumb and completely unfunny garbage of a movie.

Don't know why all the hate, it was a funny movie
slickr1234527 December 2018
Don't expect some sophisticated comedy, this is a put your brain on pause and enjoy the ride type of movie. Now that said, this isn't the worst offender out of them like certainly the scary movie type comedies, it's got some realism to it and some semblance of reality.

The most important thing is that its a funny movie, it has lots of jokes, lots of jokes, some funnier than others, but overall I'd say more of the jokes land and are funny.

It's also got some nice story, nothing special, but it's a nice feel good story with a bit of romantic parts and stuff. All of the actors are great, each and every one of them is funny in their own way,

I enjoyed the movie and had quite a few laughs, definitely worth seeing if you like the silly type comedies. Recently with mr. English and this I feel like comedies are coming back a little.

You won't fall on your back laughing ,, but i personally just enjoyed it.
Aktham_Tashtush22 December 2018
So this is another Kevin Hart movie ,, yes it is the same style as his previous ones ,, though the plot was genuine ,, had a lot of funny bits ,, not hilarious ,, but somewhat enjoyable ,, you would probably giggle on some of the jokes "i bet one it" ,, the script was okay i guess ,, it does had some dull moments ,, but it all worked out well ,, and i think the level of comedy was acceptable ,, I think some people didn't like it because they're used to seeing Kevin Hart as the sidekick next to another star , like "The rock" for instance ,, and to be honest ,, if he'd showed up in here it would have had a different response and reviews ,, but it truly believe Kevin pulled it off , and the movie went smoothly on the boxoffice .

Cast wise, next to Kevin Hart,, loved Tiffany Haddish with her angry comedy/scary face style :D ,, the other nightschoolers ,, Rob Riggle and Mary Lynn Rajskub did so well ,, and even the SNL guy Taran Killam was really funny with these "Black voices" :D

final thought ,, I think we owe it to Kevin to give him a chance of flying solo ,, i think this was a good subtle start , though i hope it doesn't distract him for his stand-ups ;) ,, Recommended.

Funny Comedy
boblipton20 February 2021
Kevin Hart is riding high. He's just been promoted to manager of the barbequeue grill store, and become engaged to girlfriend Megalyn Echikunwoke. In short order, he blows up the store, loses Miss Echikunwoke, and finds himself working in Chick-fil-a, fighting not to be the guy in the parking lot wearing a chicken suit. If he is ever to get ahead, he needs his GED certificate, but he finds he can't get ahead in no-nonsene Tiffany Haddish's nigh school class on charm.

The class is filled with other losers like hm, and the result is a standardly formatted comedy, informed with Hart's energy and telling lines. The other classmates are an amusing assemblage of low-lifers, including one guy taking the class remotely from prison It's a reasonably funny movie for those looking for a story that won't strain their brains.

You failed.
MikeC1930 September 2018
It may seem odd, but I was actually looking forward to this movie. They had been promoting it for months upon months, and I thought, "This might actually be pretty funny." Well, I only found it to be *moderately* funny. Kevin Hart does what he normally does, Tiffany Haddish does what she normally does, and character actors like Rob Riggle and Mary Lynn Rajskub show up and do some schtick that's amusing, at most. The best scenes were in the trailer, they try to squeeze just the tiniest bit of drama from learning disabilities, and the film editing is surprisingly poor. I even noticed a scene where you could tell it was dubbed over. What more can I say? I just expected more from this film.

Likeable
neil-47614 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Teddy Walker storms out of high school without bothering to even start his GED (this film never bothers t explain what a GED is for the benefit of non-USA audiences). Years later, when he loses his job, he finds he needs his GED for employment: his high achieving girlfriend knows nothing of this. So he returns to high school night classes, only to fal foul of tyhe headmaster, his old high school nemesis, not to mention Carrie, the night school teacher, who is cute but difficult to manipulate.

Horror films and comedies, particularly romantic comedies, are particularly likely to follow a formula. So I was pleased when one of my confident predictions for the resolution of Teddy's story ended up wide of the mark. Having said that, there aren't too many surprises here, and much of the plot has you saying, as you so often do, "Why don't you just come clean and tell the truth?"

This is not hysterically funny. It's mildly amusing most of the time. But oddly, I found myself liking Teddy. He's annoying, irritating, downright stpid at times, but there is no malice in him and he's genuinely likeable. And there are so many films where you can't say that about the characters.

There are some very negative comments on IMDB = a lot of 1 out of 10 marks - but I quite enjoyed it.

Atrocious
danifduque30 September 2018
I have never walked out of the cinema in during a movie. Night School is the first time. Going into this movie, I was expecting something somewhat OK, going off the trailers and other similar films that Kevin Hart has been in, e.g. Central Intelligence, Ride Along, etc. however, this film is nothing but an insult to cinema and comedy. The acting is tragic, the music is monotonous and it feels like they didn't even bother with the plot. Kevin Hart has great potential, but this is by far his worst performance in a long time, which is really disappointing to see from a comedian with such promise. Overall, if I could rate this a zero, I would.

Tediously cute
cekadah22 October 2018
First I must state this movie is not a bad move! I enjoyed it but the plot becomes tedious - Kevin Hart does Kevin Hart cute ... again. Tiffany Haddish as Carrie shines throughout the movie and the only other sustaining character is Al Madrigal as Luis and he is not given enough screen time to project his most interesting character.

The other issue I have with this movie is the editing!! Certainly the editor should have attended night school to get a GED in the art of film editing. What a mess the editing is in this movie.

AND can someone please explain the "Christian" overtone that is so prevalent in this story. The 'Christian Chicken' joke is a mixed message - think about it. It's both ridiculous and a message in this story. Was the intention to draw in the Chic-fil-a crowd? It left me with an unsettled feeling. "Why Christian"?

Night school is just another below-par Kevin Hart film.
dankyfrank18 October 2018
I walked into the theater wanting to enjoy it, since I feel as though Kevin Hart is a very funny comedian and I enjoyed his other films like Central Intelligence, Jumanji, etc. But I walked out of the theater disappointed. The plot, script, and editing are surprising very poor. Kevin Hart is not bad in this film, it just feels like he is playing himself. And after watching almost every one of his films, it gets painfully repetitive

Stupid jokes and humor does entertain with the likes of Kevin Hart and Tiffany Hadish.
cruise0116 January 2019
Night School (3.5 out of 5 stars).

Night School is stupid fun and has some comical moments from Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish about a story of a high school drop out who learns later in life that he needs to get his GED in order for him to work for a financial company. Kevin Hart was great and had some funny moments. Surely, the humor can last for so long before it becomes a little dull. With Hart and the rest of the cast ensemble like Tiffany Hadish, Rob Riggle, Romany Malco, Mary Lynn Rajskub, and Taran Killam. The characters were fun and had some fun stupid humor. If you are looking for stupid comedy jokes. This is definitely the film. The cast was good. The plot being about Teddy (Kevin Hart) who struggles with learning and avoids going to school or anything to test taking in life. When his retail store burns down. And trying to impress his fiancée Lisa (Megalyn Echikunwoke) who makes more money and has a successful career. He tells her he works for a financial company while he is secretly trying to get his GED. Plus with a principle Stewart (Taran Killam) who hates Teddy's guts that bullied him when they were in school together. Stewart walking around his school with a bat and tries to use street slang terms. The film does have a few fun moments with Teddy and his classmates trying to steal answers to the test by breaking into the school at night.

The film does struggle with its pacing. There are several scenes that felt extended or dragging on for too long. The editing could have trimmed down the scenes to keep the pace flow. Especially, once the jokes and humor were running low and becoming annoying after a while.

Overall, Night School is a pretty fair film. Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish were great with their characters. The cast ensemble was fun. The film does have some hilarious moments and fun stupid humor. There are scenes that felt like it went on for too long.

It had it's moments, but an overall disappointing movie. Cliche and kind of lot of cringe
jjmathew-8670129 September 2018
No Spoliers! I had read reviews about it but I wanted to give it a chance. It started off well but quickly turned into a typiyal cliche movie. There were some very funny moments, but also a lot of moments where jokes never landed. Those moments felt very awkard, as the jokes came up off with cringe. Kevin Hart was good but there was not a lot around him. His supporting cast couldnt be more cliche, as they fill the spots of the generic team. The actors are talented actors, but the writing is very poor. It had some sexual moments, and language but nothing too crazy. The plot is that one that we have seen before, and its okay. Overall, the comdey which should be the highlight, left me wanting more. This movie might be worth to watch when it gets to Netflix, Hulu, etc but I dont think its worth the money in theaters.

Enough laughs and sends a positive mention
Floated25 June 2019
The premise of this movie with the trailers showed pretty much the type of movie it was set out to be, and having low expectations, after watching Night School, my expectations were met with slightly better than expected. Not too sure as to why there are so many negative reviews, and people seem to be over thinking this simple comedy, and seem to have been expecting some Oscars award type movie. It's a Kevin Hart comedy (where he plays a similar role), and people seem to have taken this film far too serious.

As a movie, there was enough laughs that I was hoping for, a decent yet predictable story, although some annoying characters but overall, it was what was expecting.

Funniest Movie of 2018
view_and_review5 June 2019
Kevin Hart plays Teddy, a high school dropout living a farcical life. He lies to everyone in order to put on an appearance of being something he's not. He has even kept up an ongoing lie to his girlfriend/fiancé. The ability to keep up the charade is severely challenged when he has to go to night school to get his GED.

I was reluctant to watch this because I suffer from Kevin Hart burnout. I've seen too much of his material and his act such that it has gotten old. The high pitch voice, the faux stupidity, and other Hart specific traits have gotten old. I was feeling that way at the beginning of this movie until it was saved by some excellent jokes and Christian Chicken.

Though it wasn't' advertised as such this was somewhat a rom-com. I have to deduct a point for that because every rom-com is the same to me: misunderstanding/dishonesty leads to break-up, some introspection/seeing the light, a sacrifice, then reunion. Rom-com aspects aside, Hart, and this movie, benefited from some good co-stars and some good writing. I actually laughed quite heartily at a few points in the movie. Funniest movie of 2018.
